This is my first post and topic so if this is a repost I am sorry, but the question is simple.  Much debate at my work and with my friends and family just wondering what the world of fearless thought.

The Beatles is the right answer, but you'll get a lot of wrong ones, too. :)

The Beatles will be disappointed to find out they are American.

Rookie.   ::)

Long day..and thanks...."rookie", that's it?...after that lob over the middle of the plate, I appreciate you not "knocking me out of the ballpark."  :)  I'm just going to slink away now.

If you go by sales I'd say the Eagles.

My personal nominations are Chicago (before Terry Kath died and they got into the power ballads) and the Allman Brothers Band.

Chicago has the distinction of having had chart albums in five consecutive decades.

Lynyrd Skynyrd may have perfected it but the Allman Brothers created a branch of the rock and roll tree, SOUTHERN ROCK.

Throwback1

Personally, The Eagles or Lynard Skynard....probably Aerosmith, maybe Pearl Jam...just not quite my taste.

silverstreak

way too many great bands......we'd have to come up with some way to rank them and there would still be people hacked off.

i'd have to put nirvana up there.  aerosmith's early stuff was good but it gets worse and worse as the years pass.  this makes you realize how many good bands aren't from america.

Father Guido

I think you would have to say Aerosmith.

Now, hear me out.

They are not my favorite, (but one of them), but for longevity you have to give them some props.  They were playing when I was in High School, (mid 70's), and they still turn out hits.  By hits I mean songs that sell, and that people like.  THey still have the original band members, and really, their style hasn't really changed all that much.

The Reality is back...

Yeah, i think Aerosmith gets it, and I'm not a huge fan.

The list for me, goes something like

Aerosmith
Beach Boys
Allman Brothers
Skynard
The Eagles

etc

hondaseller01

Aerosmith, final answer

They are not my favorite, but the majority would argue the best.

Skynard is just a "southern rock band"

Baitshop

Here boys.....let me settle this for you......

1. EAGLES

2. Chicago

3. Doobie Brothers

4. Journey  (Steve Perry days only)

5. The Commodores

6. Aerosmith

7. Lynard Skynard

8. Rolling Stones

9. Allman Brothers

10. Genesis (with Phil Collins as the lead singer)

I'd agree that the EAGLES are the best, in fact I'd agree with most of your list.  However, I'm pretty sure that the STONES and GENESIS were bands from the UK.

You would be correct, but we have to give the "Special" posters some slack.  This is America, you know.  Even posters like Baitshop deserve to be treated with dignity.

Plus......I bought all of the albums and cassettes at Wal-Mart.........they don't sell anything that is not "American Made"...............do they??..??..?? ;D

BTW.....the only thing that is "Special" about me is that I have a Greenwood education........

Wasn't anything like hearing the click-click of a track change in the middle of one of the Allman Brothers' 20+ minute songs. ;D

Bait, as far as your one-hit wonders, you left out:

Paper Lace - The Night Chicago Died

Brownsville Station - Smokin' in the Boys Room

Bo Donaldson & the Heywoods - Billy, Don't Be a Hero

Cate Brothers - Union Man (had to get that AR connection in)

Thin Lizzy - The Boys Are Back in Town

(Yeah, I know two of those are not American bands)

hahaha, I was about to make a post asking where you were?

Throwback1

Crosby, Stills and Nash (and then Young) are probably more talented overall than any other American group ever, just not comfortable calling them a rock and roll band.

Adjudicator

Ok, every one of you are wrong!  It's gotta be Van Halen!!! C'mon, Eddie's the greatest guitar player walking the face of the earth!!!  You pick it, it don't matter..... Sam or Dave.  They were both great in their own respect.
