We got into the old "What is ______'s mascot?"  discussion during a family gathering yesterday which made me wonder how many Arkansas High School mascots I actually knew.  Out of 319 schools, I didn't even know close to half (138).

On a related topic, I thought this might be fun.  Can you name all of the unique mascots in the state.  By unique, I mean that there are no other high schools in the state with that mascot.  By my count, there are 56.  Name the mascot and the school.  I'll let you know whether you are correct.  And descriptions do not make them necessarily unique (i.e. Charging Wildcats (NLR), War Eagles (JA Fair), etc.), but in some cases they do.  That's where the count of 56 may vary.

COMPLETED

ANTLERS (Deer)
APPACHES (Pottsville)

SKYHAWKS (Ozark Adventist Academy)
SOUTHERNERS (Southside)
SQUIRRELS (Winslow)
WAR HAWKS (Mt. Vernon/Enola)
WAMPUS CATS (Conway)
WOLVERINES (Western Yell County)

Count ended up at 59.  That's giving the now defunct Winslow Squirrels and allowing the Curley Wolves of Prescott to be differentiated from other Wolves.  NLR Charging Wildcats, GCT Golden Eagles, Fair War Eagles, and Hillcrest Screamin' Eagles (Jacksonville) were not considered unique.

I can think of plenty of others that I think are unique, but I don't know for a fact that they are.

Black Rock, Arkansas is just past Hoxie and Portia in NE Arkansas.  And they are the Zebras.

If they are indeed the Deaf Leopards, then I agree.  However, I would think that Deaf would be the name of the school.

So is it Arkansas School for the Deaf Leopards or Arkansas School for the Deaf Deaf Leopards?

All correct, except Scrappers.  Devall's Bluff are the Scrappers.

It's actually Arkansas School for the Deaf & Blind.  They are indeed the Deaf Leopards as far as I've ever heard.

However, if this is for football only, they don't have a football team.

Coach DePriest, Sheridan

I think it's two separate "schools".

I know the Blind School had a great wrestler last year.

This is for all schools, not just football.

From the Arkansas School for the Blind website...

The two decades between 1940 and 1960 saw the development of an athletic program and the beginning of athletic competition with other schools for the blind.  ASB students competed in wrestling and track.  Athletic teams first adopted the name of "Bronco Busters." They became the "Tornados" around 1952.  Wishing to adopt a name that was indigenous to Arkansas, a committee of students and faculty  selected the Titan Missile as the team name in 1963.  ASB athletes were Titans until the Titan Missile became obsolete in the 1980's.  The lion is now the official ASB mascot.

Updated

Here are the ones that were not correct (although some of you corrected yourself or each other)

Pioneers (Batesville, Gentry)
Saints (Shiloh Christian, St. Paul)
Bobcats (Corning, Dumas, Hope, Dumas, Flippin, Marshall, Walnut Ridge) also Hatfield before consolodating with Mena
Dragons (DeWitt, Genoa Central, Junction City, Mountainburg)
Owls (Abundant Life, McGehee)
Thunderbirds (Guy-Perkins, Cross County)
Rattlers (Murfreesboro, Magazine)

I did not include Bearkatz, but that was a good catch.  Here's a little trivia for you, there are three mascots in the state that does not end in an "s".  Cave City Cavemen and Melbourne Bearkatz are two of them.  What is the other?

I added Winslow Squirrels even though they no longer exist.  I don't want to get into a history of all the schools that no longer exist, but that's one of my favorites (and it's my game :))

I counted Wampus Cat.  It's a lot different than any other cat.  FYI: There are no other felines left to get on the list.

Miners has been said.

There are 4 football schools left.  Two in 4A, one in 3A, and one in 2A.  The one in 2A is the answer to my trivia question earlier:  Besides the Cavemen and Bearkatz, what other mascot does not end in an "s."

I had them as Hurricanes plural.  Not sure their official name, so you are probably correct, but that was not the answer to my trivia question.
