Title: Batesville vs Alma
Post by: MDXPHD on November 22, 2013, 09:38:12 pm
3-0 Batesville.  I expect there to be a lot of defense and punting in this very exciting game.

By beating them by 11 points, apparently.

I understand that but I was meaning Defensively? Does he think Batesville is better?

What part is Batesville better at than Alma in his opinion?   Sorry I didn't clarify. :)

I think Alma has a great defense, but so does Batesville.  This will be a hard hitting game. Could be a boring one to watch, too ha.

What's their stats per game on time of possession this year?

Defensive yardage and what player specifically or are you guessing?  Just curious :)

OK tell me if I am wrong.  Beebe and Greenbrier .  The two teams in common.  I do not know about Alma but Batedville about had both of the teams mercy ruled by half time.

Batesville 35
Alma.         14

I don't have to know the stats. I know that batesville wins games with that huge line and a fast defense. They win with holding the ball longer than the opposing team.ask wynne. Teams can't score if they don't have the ball. I'm not a batesville fan but I know by seeing them that they will be playing in the rock again this year.

Alma stand no chance in this one. Might as well just bring it in and call it a good season. Batesville plays really good D. We can't handle this at all.

Batesville 67
Alma 2

Batesville downs the ball in the endzone as time expires.

I like both of these teams.  Both smashmouth teams.  Batesville, because they are close to Harrison, seen them over the years and have proved that they are Championship material.  Alma, because they are from the West and I have seen them over the years, plus this year, showing Championship material.  I can see a Morrilton/Alma Championship game, but I can also see a Morrilton/Batesville game.  If Hope wins against Morrilton in the semis, I still see a East or West Championship.  Sorry, Hoghead.

Look jack..... I simply stated that Alma would win.  You are the one who said Batesville will Dominate Alma.   You can't expect to make a statement like that and not have someone question it.  It's a message board deal with it.

I didn't make you answer all my questions.  You chose too.  However you avoided the one if you have seen Alma play pal?

And yes I did make a smart assessment.

Batesville dominates is a dumb a s s statement. Period.

Nope. It'll be a low scoring affair especially from how bad that field got chewed up Friday night. Going to be a solid game. Haven't seen Batesville personally play since we last met in the playoffs in 2005.

I like the Alma Batesville matchup better than I do the Alma Camden one.
With both Alma and Batesville runnin the ball very well, it'll be a mid score game and the defenses are gonna need to step it up come the fourth quarter. Whichever team gets even the slightest bit tired, may end up costing them the game.

Here we go!
Alma 24
Batesville 21

This should be a very good ole fashion physical game.Lots of defense in this one and for the person who said batesville will dominate one simply doesn t walk into Airdale stadium and dominate Alma.Batesville won t intimidate Alma anymore than PA intimidated Morrilton and forgive me but which conference still has the number 1 and 2 seeds left GO AIRDALES AND DEVIL DOGS lets mak it a west showdown in the rock.

Hh you can post that in as many threads as you like, but the Hope is no where near a shoe in. Personally, I think the top 4 are the true top four and looking at the playoffs thus far this is just a well rounding season. Least mistakes this coming week takes it to the show.

Did I say they were a shoe in ? Morrilton and others such as yourself tend to think Hope keeps winning with no talent. Hope pitched a shut out on Wynne. We all know Wynne is Wynne. They're a tradition rich football school like Alma & Batesville. Morrilton has a fine team as well. They're win over PA was no upset ! They won ! Point Blank...

It is in my opinion Hope will beat Morrilton due to the fact that they have more talent and there is no pressure on the HOME FIELD LADEN BOBCATS. Surely the Devil Dogs are a talented squad as well. But Hope has played against this calibur of talent in the 5A SOUTH all year. Morrilton HAS NOT ! 5A West members Greenbrier, Vilonia, Clarksville, Harrison & 70 point Shiloh were no challange to Morrilton. Hope will be a Alma like challange for the Devil Dogs.

Hope has played & BEAT more playoff advancing teams (8) than anyone left in 5A.
Ashdown*, Prescott, Nashville, WC, WH*, CF, Sylvan Hills & WYNNE. No one has played a tougher schedule, NOBODY !   Hope will beat Morrilton. Have a great game against Batesville.

I can agree with everything you just posted with the exception of those like myself thinking Hope has no talent. As I clearly stated "Personally, I think the top 4 are the true top four and looking at the playoffs thus far this is just a well rounding season." May not be any super stars, but like Alma the teams left all have talent.

I second that. The Bobcats have quietly gone through this bracket and season until the "upset" of Camden Fairview with hindsight possibly not being one at this stage. Alma, Batesville, Hope, and Morrilton all advanced here not by mere chance. This isn't some fluke, this is the Semifinals. Talent only gets a team so far. With these squads they not only have talent, but also execute disciple. On Friday Night any of these teams are deserving of playing for state. Any game could tip in the favor of the opposing team. There is no shame for the seasons these squads have procured.

So for those that still think these teams have no talent, wake up. If you are a fanatic about the game of football, then you should realize just what it took to get here: Teamwork.

For sure all the teams left have talent.

Hope beat CF, I'd have to say the best win on their resume.

Batesville the same.

Alma's win over Morrilton looks really huge right now.

Then of course Morriton out scoring PA.

Could all of these teams repeat those Key wins time after time.  I think not which is why these are some great match-ups.  Wish I could watch each one.

Since Alma obviously can't win this, the real question is what does Steve Perry act like the day after Thanksgiving. Alma hasn't played this far into the year in so long, that stories of Steve's "digestion problems" seem more like legend than truth.

And the post-turkey day hangover has been said to make even Eddie Sutton shiver in fear

This should be a very good ole fashion physical game.Lots of defense in this one and for the person who said batesville will dominate one simply doesn t walk into Airdale stadium and dominate Alma.http://houseplans.co/house-plans/1248/ won t intimidate Alma anymore than PA intimidated Morrilton and forgive me but which conference still has the number 1 and 2 seeds left GO AIRDALES AND DEVIL DOGS lets mak it a west showdown in the rock.

First and ONLY game for Alma in the playoffs...

A lot of people thought Mills would beat Alma or give them a good game. People want to say Mills isn't good now, because Alma dominated them.

I don't know why a lot of people thought that.  Mills had a win against a White Hall team that was terrible.  Alma is good. Their biggest advantage on this one is home field.  Batesville has a long trip and is playing on grass.  It should be a good game, but Batesville is a solid team this year..I say Batesville by 3.

in reference to the Mills/WH game, the score of that game is quite different from what the tempo was. Mills had 2 pick 6's in the 4th quarter, one with less than 2 mins on the clock. anyways, i look forward to the score updates or lack thereof (0-0 end of 3rd Q lol) from this weeks game. should be a slobber knocker

I got time to watch the Batesville v. CF delayed broadcast. Observations:

1. The Batesville crew who puts this together do a great job. Good camera work for the most part, good commentating, good play by play.

2. The stats guy for Batesville has either the most soothing voice ever or the creepiest voice ever, I haven't decided which.

3. Batesville kicker can kick it into the endzone on KO's, not sure Alma has seen a guy do that all year since Greenwood.

4. Watching the game humanized Batesville. Which is to say, they aren't unbeatable. I watched a few Greenbrier highlights too, and I expected total domination based on the score, but Greenbrier had no trouble moving the ball on Batesville in the 1st quarter. Actually, minus a few mistakes and penalties, Greenbrier could have been winning 14-0 at the end of the 1st.

5. Batesville is big, as everyone expected. They run that pitch run that LSU runs a lot in the running game. They get their RBs going downhill most of the time and open huge holes for them. DL will need to step up big and LBS will need to fill gaps.

6. Batesville passing game is efficient. The QB is big, tough to bring down, pretty quick, and has a big arm. He can throw on the run very well. If Alma can keep him in the pocket, that would be best. Just contain him, though. They have some good receivers who will make plays.

7. Defense is very well disciplined. They run tight man to man in coverage. Their DL gets good pressure on the QB. They run more complicated blitzes than we have seen all year. Alma has been incredibly successful on trick plays, but I don't see them working against Batesville, they stay in position (I hope Alma proves me wrong).

8. Special teams is good. I didn't see a huge threat in the return game, but their kicker can boom it. He has the distance from 45+, but I question his accuracy from that distance. He tends to over kick it seems to me. I think they change out their punters, but they are both efficient.

Personally, I now think this game will come down to who's passing game is working better. I can see both D's stuffing the run. Alma will have to pass the ball to open the run game, because we won't be able to push them over (Once again, I hope they prove me wrong).

Alma fans should watch the highlights of Greenbrier or Camden Fairview, Batesville is a great team and we'll need some luck to win, but their defense isn't an impenetrable wall and we've seen offenses just as good or better. Just not on the same team.

Lol ok maybe I jumped the gun guaranteeing Alma winning by saying 'once' Alma wins instead of 'if' Alma wins. My bad.
But I'm stickin with my last statement you highlighted. I'm not saying that it will be Batesville posters (I know you and most of the Pioneer fans here are smarter than that, but a few might here or there) but there will be people who will say Batesville just wasn't any good or as good as we thought if Alma wins and especially if Alma wins big. Happens all the time.
Some of the posters on here are upset that their teams aren't left in the playoffs and they have nothing better to do than make excuses why certain teams are left. Like someone said earlier, this is the semis. Whatever got these 4 teams here doesn't matter.  They are here and 28 other teams aren't, so whatever the case maybe, these 4 teams did it better.

And whether or not people wanna admit it or not, it does take a bit of luck at times to win games and make it past a game in the playoffs. Every team at least once in the season has just a bit of luck. Some just happens to get more than others.

Not so fast my friends, this game has both teams playing close to the same offense, both defenses are similar.  Who can wear the other down, in this game.  This could come down to a special teams game.  Batesville might have the edge with their kicker Oz (too bad that they don't have more like him in "that sport that shalt not be named in Alma").  This should be a great game, is there any live radio or video streaming of this game from either team?

In the other game, Morrilton will win big and make the Bobcats wish that they loved it! ;)

Alma and Mills was suppose to be a good game. Now people are saying Mills was bad. Now everyone is saying Batesville is way to good for Alma. But once Alma beats Batesville , suddenly Batesville isn't as good as years past or Batesville just wasn't good to begin with. Oh it'll happen. Trust me.

Some people just don't know anything to do other than throw excuses.

All the "Alma having a easy road of byes" talk started just after they advanced to the semis.
No Future. You know better.

I know what you mean. Somebody will always have an excuse. Weather, officials, etc.

Been really proud of our Defense this year. Look like Airedale defenses of the past. Defense stretches out wide on sweeps and contains.....they swarm the ball like days of old......and stick receivers over the middle.

I'm sure Batesville's D is just the same.

Can't wait.

Whomever has the most teeth at the end of the game, wins this one.

Instead of trying for the last name, just call our junior kicker Oz, short for his given name, Ozvaldo.  BTW, you will also see him filling in on the D-Line.  Fine young man!

Yes, as a  defender.  When he "clears" the ball you can send the forwards cause it's going a long way.

Yes, the Pioneer defense moves to the ball quite well, with an affinity for finding it in the possession of the QB while still on the backfield.

Note to Alma, even though you don't like "that sport that shalt not be named in Alma", that sport has produced some great kickers that also play football.  If Batesville and Alma offense and defense are trading licks back and forth, thus getting a stalemate, then the kicking game might win this one.  Just saying.

Note to OZ, Harrison's former kicker, Colliver in his Junior (?) year (who also played that sport that Goblins rule at ;D ), tied 5th in the State record for longest FG.  I can't remember if it was 51 yrds or 53 yrds.  But that should give you an incentive to break that record.

Good luck to both teams in this game and GO AIREDALES!

Oz has the leg and the nerve to beat the record.  He actually kicked a 60 yard FG in practice with a little breeze at his back and occasionally kicks 50+ in practice.  I have a feeling that given the right opportunity, Coach King will let him take a stab a the record next year.

Most of the time it's not up to the players to break the record, it's up to the coach to risk field position.   I was listening in on the radio a couple of weeks for Batesville and multiple times they said he does that in practice. I know it's different, but they also said he hit a 60 yarder in practice I believe. Sounds like a great asset to a team!

Can Alma kick the ball? I know they don't believe in that sport so I am just curious.

CF needs to start practicing kicking right now.  It's not hard to kick an extra point. Just get one kid and make him practice all summer!

Alma kicked a FG from 30 yards out last week. Not a big kicker but he is an average high school kicker. This was on a mud pile too. Batesville has a big scary D and I'm willing to bet alma matches up close to them.

Being fairly confident that your going to come away with a score after reaching the 25 is great. The thought that if the situation should warrent you have a chance to win a game with an FG by reaching the 35 is special.  BTW, there is a Freshman Pioneer Kicker who should be ready to take over after OZ graduates next year.  Don't know that he will match the Oz's strength, but his point after percentage has been very good at junior high.

We aren't fancy like some schools. No turf so footing for kicks will be a little different. The field will be in bad bad shape Friday night. 4 straight weeks of games and rain have made it a mud bath. I don't think people realize how nasty this game will be with all of the mud and hard hitting. Going to be great. Safe travels for all of the fans making the long drive to alma Friday. Catfish hole, red rooster and Mearls steakhouse would be my places to go.

Should be a great game.  I hope both teams play to their potential, that the boys all play with class, and that there are no serious injuries.  While boys on the losing end will be upset, I hope the parents and fans will view the season as a success.  Making it to the final four is a great accomplishment.  BTW, what kind of speed and size does Alma have on their O-line?

Going to be a great game! The defenses matchup well, the kickers can strike from reasonable differences (grass/mud will be interesting), and the field will be a mental battlefield for Batesville.

Whoever gets the last stop and a killer interception flips momentum and wins. Going to be a slobber-knocker.

With 3 days of sunshine and wind, I would imagine that the mud will be gone, but the rough surface may have some impact.  While the pioneers practice and play on a good surface, we do play some away games on grass/dirt/mud.  The GCT Mud Bowl, Blytheville, Nettleton, Wynne, and Forrest City, all have a natural surface.

ST is very well coached.

Alma's kickoff coverage has been excellent other than one TD return against Morrilton. Batesville fans may be interested in the strategy Alma uses on kickoffs. I've seen more teams go to this, but I think Alma has executed it the best I've seen yet. I'm talking about the sky kick. Alma doesn't kick deep usually on KO's, they kick it high for a couple of reasons.

1. I love this team, but Alma isn't super speedy so letting teams like Morrilton and Mills get a full head of steam on a return against us isn't the best idea.

2. You have to field a kickoff with Alma's hard hitting defense bearing down on you or call a fair catch and get no return yardage.

Our QB, Evan Burris, has been a very efficient punter this year. I don't know if Alma keeps a stat of how many times a punter pins a team inside the 20, but Evan has to have some sort of Alma record for that. I think last week was the first time I've seen him punt one into the end zone for a touchback and it was barely in.

Return game is efficient, too. We've had some good returns this year against fast teams, big teams, all kinds of teams.

Special teams is important and it's not just about how big of a leg your kicker has.

Coach Loughridge talked about how our defense will have to win the game for us on Friday night. This will be a field position battle. I don't see our O going up and down the field. Our D needs to get some quick stops and make them punt in their territory to set us up for good field position.

Given the forecast of calm wind, Oz should put the kick-offs in the end zone.  Our kickoff and punt return guys have been pretty sure handed this year under pressure, making pretty conservative decisions with regard to the fair catch option.   No guarantees, but past competence in that are should be a pretty good day indicator of future success.  Our QB is also a quality punter, as I have stated on another thread.  If the young man were to have an opportunity to play football at the next level (though his game is really baseball) it would be as a punter.  He has not had to punt much this year, but when he does, he is quit effective.  Considering so many similar strengths, it should be a fun game to watch.

Coach Loughridge talked about how our defense will have to win the game for us on Friday night. This will be a field position battle. I don't see our O going up and down the field. Our D needs to get some quick stops and make them punt in their territory to set us up for good field position.

Should be a great test then, considering the Pioneer's bread and butter, the offensive line.  A lot of fun watching a very good lines matching up in a contest of smash mouth football.  Regardless of the outcome, it should be a great game for spectators!!  Can Alma hold the Pioneers on the ground and pound, only time will tell:).

The Alma QB make receive some very personal attention from young masters Bell, Richardson, Flood, and Jeffery.  He may even have the pleasure of becoming acquainted with a couple of our linebackers.  They do so love to visit with the QB in the backfield:). My recommendation to the QB, wear extra padding, throw or hand off quickly and brace yourself or fall quickly to the ground!!

Being on the field all night will wear out their legs..... their hits will become anemic.

Some of your boys might need armour. A couple of our Dbacks carry knives in their socks.

Alma is not as good as people think. It will be an easy win for Batesville. Alma has decent defense but below average offense. They cannot throw the ball so if you stop the run you have won the game.

I'm sure Beebe didn't think Alma could throw the ball either until Evan Burris threw for over 200 yards and 4 touchdowns against them. This is Alma's best passing game in awhile. The Airedales don't throw a lot, but they are very efficient when they do.

Evan has got much better as the year has gone along. Alma had -1 yards rushing in the first half against Beebe and won by 26 points.

Alma has a pretty decent balance attack, for the year Alma averages 166.40 receiving yards per game, 201.40 rushing yards per game, and our defense averages 67.6 tackles per game. Overall the offense has generated 48 touchdowns and the defense has generated 15 sacks with 14 interceptions on the year.

Evan is throwing an average of 14.524% or for those that choose not to do math, that is 166.4 yards per game with 18 touchdowns to five interceptions on the year. This kid already has over 1,500 yards (1692) of offense.

Malachi White is a work horse. Plain and simple. On 200 carries this year he has gashed defenses for 996 yards. He is averaging close to five yards per carry (4.98) and generates an average of 90.5 yards per game.

Yeah, that sounds like a below average offense bud.

. 1,500 yards through 12 games is not very good. Face it, they will lose to Batesville. They play the same style but are a much better team. Only good win Alma has is against Morrilton where they only won by 8 while morrilton turned the ball over 5 times. Alma is not very good.

I quite agree with trackster on his points and it is not just about how big of a leg your kicker has, it helps, but what really matters is the precision of where you put the ball at.  For instance this year, it seems a lot of teams have adopted the onside kick along with the long kickoff.  Also, the pooch and rugby along with the traditional punt.  So special/defensive teams that play against other teams that have utilized some or all of the aforementioned kicks and learned to adapt at a moments notice will stop the different style kicking game.  PA learned the hard way against Morrilton about trying to keep doing the onside and the Devil Dogs also had the accuracy on punt kicks to put it from PA's one yard line or inside the 20 or so.  FGs, the same old style, but some have been utilizing the fake FG and go for the 2 point conversion.  Morrilton and Alma have seen some or most of these different types of kicking games during this season.  Now that a lot of posters have said that the Alma field is in bad shape due to weather and the last few games.  Doesn't matter, Real Men Play On Grass, the same for the kickers.

Defense and Special teams, be ready at a moments notice to adapt to the kicking game, but accurate kicking can be the key.  Put the ball where needed, no matter what the conditions are.

(and with apologies to my Alma brethren)
No matter what type of ball is kicked, put the ball where needed! ;D

I have this feeling Batesville fans feel like this and may be in for a shock. I think many fans think this game will be a breeze compared to CF. I watched the tape, and I don't usually make statements like this, but this will be a much tougher game for the Pioneers than CF was.

YAWN...NEXT!
. 1,500 yards through 12 games is not very good. Face it, they will lose to Batesville. They play the same style but are a much better team. Only good win Alma has is against Morrilton where they only won by 8 while morrilton turned the ball over 5 times. Alma is not very good.

I have this feeling Batesville fans feel like this and may be in for a shock. I think many fans think this game will be a breeze compared to CF. I watched the tape, and I don't usually make statements like this, but this will be a much tougher game for the Pioneers than CF was.

Shh...let them have that revelation of the "oh crap" moment. It is rude of us to take that away from them Trackster.

Alma is not as good as people think. It will be an easy win for Batesville. Alma has decent defense but below average offense. They cannot throw the ball so if you stop the run you have won the game.

For what lol?

That's my surprise. Steve already knows.
haha for whenever Alma wins? I like Alma I just don't see them winning. But hey there not in the final 4 left for no reason.

I've not heard a single Batesville fan say that Alma will be a breeze, and I have spoken to many.  A few have posted a little trash talk on FF, but they are just gigging the Alma faithful.  Alma got to this point because the deserve to be here.  I would like our chance if we were playing in front of the home crowd, but we are not.  I would like our boys to avoid a long drive, but we can't.  It would be nice to play on a good surface, but we won't. It would be great if we were not coming off a hard fought, physical game, but we are.  All those factors go into making this a pretty even match.  Could one team pull away for a significant margin, yes, if there is a key injury or one team finds a mismatch in a particular facet of the game.  Most likely the game will be decided by 14 points or less and it should be a great game.  NO, don't imagine that anyone with half a lick of sense really thinks we will find a pushover in Alma.

I concur. Outside of the forum it is mainly just trash-talking to push buttons.

Honestly, those are well worded comments about Friday night. I have the upmost respect for all the opponents Alma has faced on their schedule and you learn to never look ahead. Batesville will present their own, unique challenge, like all others to the Airedales. Our staff has done an excellent job of making adjustments during the game and after the half.

Point blank, this game will be who controls the time of possession and makes the most out of each possession with the ball. I expect an eerily similar game to the 2004 matchup of Alma and Greenwood (17-14 half with game winning field goal kicked as time expired, scoreless for both teams in the 3rd/4th Qtr).

To my Batesville posters, can't wait to meet you. Halftime in the north endzone behind the goal posts near the Airedale shrubbery.

Totally agree - Similar strengths may lead to a real coaching chess match.    I'll try to make it to the end zone for a quick visit.

Fair enough but the bolded statements in your quotes still imply that you think Batesville has had to have a lot go against them to make it a fair match, as if Alma had no chance before all those factors. I just don't see that.

Good Luck to all the teams in the semis!  I like both Alma/Batesville teams.  But being West biased...

First time posting here in a long while. As a Pioneer alum, I can't help but to be partial to Batesville. This is the very best Alma team that has been on the field in 8 years, where on the other hand, this is the very best Batesville team that King has ever put together. The only one comparable would be the 03 State Champion Pioneers. In 05 these two schools met in a dog fight in Batesville. These 2 teams now are drastically similar to those two. no player will wake up saturday morning and not feel like theyve been ran over. These are the two most physical teams in Arkansas Class 5A Football. I would go out and even say they are both 2 of the top 4 most physical regardless of classification. Tomorrow night around 9:30p.m. we will all know who will be the 2014 5A State Champions. The winner next Saturday will come from this game. Both teams are deserving, both have put in the time and effort. It will be exciting. If a high school football player, his parents, his family, the cheerleaders, their families, the family dog, who ever cannot get up and get chill bumps over a game like this, you arent human. This is what its all about. With that being said, Pioneers 24 Airdales 14.
Goodluck to both teams!

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that 05 or 06, whichever was undefeated come playoffs, was one of the best Batesville teams I got to watch, even though they lost in the playoffs (to morrilton I believe, but I'm not sure).  The 03 team won in a down year in 5A.  I don't follow Batesville necessarily, but I follow high school football. This team is definitely up there with the best to come through though, I agree with you there.

These two teams aren't even close to the top 5 most physical overall in the state..Sorry guys.  Hope is even up there with both of you, and could be more physical. I haven't seen Alma play, but I have seen Hope and Batesville.  Every 7A school probably is and a lot of 6A schools.

Morrilton will win the championship this season, which will be the 2013* state championship.

2013 State Champions* correct. As far as the physicality of these two teams, I would put them up with anyone in the state. There really are not many teams left that want to play old school hit you in your mouth football anymore.

If you haven't seen alma play then how can you guarantee that they aren't one of the more physical teams in the state? Bentonville, southside would be two very physical teams. Considering the numbers I would put alma in the top ten. Batesville has the reputation of hard hitting all season too. Before you go an crown the state champion before the semi final games are played we will go ahead and play the game tonight.

These two teams aren't even close to the top 5 most physical overall inM the state..Sorry guys.  Hope is even up there with both of you, Tand could be more physical. I haven't seen Alma play, but I have seen Hope and Batesville.  Every 7A school probably is and a lot of 6A schools.

Morrilton will win the championship this season, which will be the 2013* state championship.
I tend to lean toward the 2010 Batesville team as being the greatest. I may or may not be biased. I think 2003, 2005, and 2013 can all make a case. If this year's team wins the title, it will be hard to argue with them.

Neither defense has stopped the opposing offense, yet.  Batesvillie drove the ball into Alma territory on their first possession before fumbling, and Alma drove the ball into Batesville territory before fumbling.  But other than that, both offense are just methodically moving the ball down the field with relative ease.

Batesville earned it, that's for sure. Two sacks, including the one that pretty much won the game.

Loughridge did an incredible job this year.  We didn't have much speed or great athletes, but he got the kids to buy into his system: smashmouth, disciplined football.  10-3, undefeated 5A West Champs, and a 3 point loss in the state semi-finals.  The loss tonight stings, but our boys have nothing to hand their heads about.

Not sure, exactly, how many seniors/starters we're losing off this team, but I know the 9th-11th grade classes were very successful in junior high and have some talent, so this should just be the beginning of Alma returning to prominence.

It's not like Alma got this far with smoke and mirrors.  They went undefeated in a tough 5A West, beating Morrilton at Morrilton, and earned the right to get this "cakewalk" to the state semi-finals.

On another note, that was about as evenly matched of a football game I've seen in a long time.  Both teams styles mirrored each other and, despite all the talk about their defenses, both teams were able to line up and methodically move the ball down the field.  The only thing that stopped them (for the most part) was turnovers, or it would've been something like a 45-42 or 38-35 shootout.

Second I'll not moderate this thread. I would find myself very unprofessional if anyone ANYONE bad mouthed my Airedales for the next few days.

Third, I could not be prouder of the season these youngsters have provided us with. All heart and holding nothing back. Thank you to our Seniors for the leadership you've shown on and off the field. You have set a high mark for those who follow. To those returning next year, I look forward to another great season!

Wow!  What a great game.  Yes, both teams moved the ball, but it was not with ease.  Two of the best O-lines I've seen in the past ten years gave the opposition fits, and the defense for each team dealt out some punishing hits.  Both coaching staffs did a great job with strategy on both sides of the ball - a bit of a chess match between some fine coaches. The fans helped make for a good atmosphere and I might add that the Pioneer faithful traveled quite well for a semifinal match up.   Finally, I enjoyed a short visit with Paw Paw at half time.  Poor old fella is quite a fan and pretty brave to get out in the cold weather to cheer on his Air dales:).

Perfect example--a pioneer player tackled a receiver around the waist and they called face mask---MULTIPLE holding calls missed on both sides--anyhting else
Title: Re: Batesville vs Alma
Post by: BillyJack™ on November 30, 2013, 08:38:41 am
Not so perfect guru. The call wasn't on the defender for the receiver, it was for the running back that came up to block in middle and like to got his helmet ripped off. Now for holding none calls... all night long, but that's pretty common in the playoffs. Since holding really could be called on just about every snap, the officials generally let the kids play on unless it gets out of hand and both teams played a fair, hard hitting game so I have no problem with the no calls there.

It was the same crew we had in the semi's last year against PA.  They did a relatively good job, but missed a couple of obvious calls both ways.  We got away with a couple of things, and Alma did as well.  I thought the crew did a good job of letting them play, but keeping a good check on the jawing.  There were a couple of instances where a flag-happy, look at me ref would have called an unsportsmanlike conduct on some of the "conversations" after a play.  As it was, this crew stepped in, told the players to knock it off, and sent them back to the huddle.  That's what a good crew should do.

I'm simply just curious about the rule because I don't know what the rule for high school is, on touch backs why were they placing us on the left hash and when batesville missed the field goal why'd they take us to the 20? I was talking to another high school coach and he said the rule is if it's outside the 20 then we get the ball where the ball was to begin with? Sorry I'm not to good at wording it... But if you were there you know what I'm asking. Just curious what the actual rule is
Title: Re: Batesville vs Alma
Post by: Rampage72501 on November 30, 2013, 09:21:32 am
I believe the receiving team has the option to place the ball on a hash following a touch back.

In High School football, if a kicked ball goes into the endzone, it's a touch back and comes out to the 20.

Yep, Federation rule.  If you try a 60 yard FG and the ball goes into the endzone, it' a touch back.  The NFL spots the ball at the place of the kick and the ball is returned to the spot of the snap in college, unless the spot occurred inside the 20, at which point the ball is spotted at the 20.

Great great game last night. Two very physical teams in a heavy weight match.

Batesville is a very good football team, my hats off to them. Well coached...good discipline. It's been a long time since I've seen a ball game like that at Airedale Stadium. Thanks to both teams for a well played game, and good luck to the Pioneers next week.

The Alma running back is as tough as any I've seen this year.  Not the speed/mobility of the boys from Jonesboro and Springdale, but the hardest to bring down.  How about our #44, Bell, on defense.  Severely sprained MCL and an ACL the doctors say is hanging on by a thread and he was still fighting his way into the backfield.  What was the diagnosis on the Alma defender who went out early in the game?  Looked like it may have been a knee?  Other than Bell, who has battled his knee injury since early in the season, I did not see any other Pioneer injuries, other than what I will assume were a lot of bruises!!

I foolishly underestimated Alma's offense with my 31-10 prediction. I got the 31 right for us, but Alma's offense did a great job against our defense. Hard-hitting, smashmouth, classic football game that could have gone either way. Congrats to the Airedales on a great season. You guys have yourselves a coach too. Keep him around.

That doesn't work either. I said they would lose. I was right as usual. Alma has an average team. Deal with it!

When they have Beebe and Mills respectively as 1st and 2nd round opponents. They're as much competition....and deserve to be in the playoffs .....as much as Mountain Home does.  Don't be so upset. It's over. Move on! I'm trying to but y'all keep bringing up my posts from last week. Geeze

I will but you're still an idiot and Alma is better than a average team.   Sweet Dreams.

Average team? That's pretty funny. I'm sure the two teams in the title game would tell you otherwise.

Beginning the year, Alma was average at best, but that was then. They worked hard with a signature win over Morrilton and improved as the year progressed. By years end a much improved Team! I fully expect that progress to continue and look forward to 2014 to see them build on a little success.

^1 Some teams progress more than others.  This can happen with a young athletic team, minimal injuries, or a motivating event, but I suspect is always accompanied by a great coach and above average coaching staff.  King proves this each year, which results in my insistence that early season game results are moot and that your team should be judged in how they finish the season.  It appears that Alma was much the same - pretty good early, very good in the end.  So, Alma fans, be patient if you don't pick up where you left off.  You have a fine coach whose team will improve throughout the year (unless they sustain multiple injuries in Ares critical areas with no depth), and will once again finish strong.  All IMO

^ this is a good summary of the alma team. This isn't the same team that played greenwood and Russelville.

I feel its an accurate statement that covers the teams that made it so far in playoffs, get better every week, take lessons from loss and put the rest behind you. Morrilton isnt the same team they were early on. PA had them down 22-7 and they never panicked or got nervous, they just focused on the next play, they didnt look at score board until the end. Their focus was on the next play until there are none left. Do your best on the next play, string enough good ones together and you will get where you want to go.

I agree , late season wins reveal more than early season.  Then again if a team is getting ahead by 35 each game in early season that says a bunch too.

Honestly, I kinda thought Alma was average to above-average too. That was until I watched them play. Very good football team.
