Show me another rock singer who can do "Somebody to Love"...you can't. Good call with Mercury.

I'm gonna throw one out here most probably wouldn't vote for in Mikey Patton from "Faith no More", and Chris Martin from Coldplay, and Pavaratti.

Female-Patsy Cline, Aretha Franklin, and Reba Macentire(sp?).

-Painted Fan-

Some that really stick out to me:
Female- Mariah Carey, Sarah Brightman

Male- Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli, the late Luciano Pavoratti, Michael McDonald

And to Robert Arctor: Reba?  She's the only person I've ever seen that could take a 1 syllabel word and make it a 3.

Oh my god, I actually agree with you on something (Is the the earth shaking?). Patton from Faith no More is very underated.

I have a feeling, seeing your music lists and stuff, we would agree on alot, save for Beatles/Metallica. lol.

Did you know Patton did the voices of the Vampire things in "I am Legend".

Chester Bennington - Linkin Park

He's pretty good, but I don't think he compares to actual vocalists. He's more of a growling/screaming/energetic vocalist

Coach Venny Slocombe

Alan Clarke of "The Hollies" was a killer vocalist. "He ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" really showed his range. Great singer in my opinion.

No but he had the best vocals of our time for a male. Marvin Gaye would be my second I have never heard anyone that even sounds like them. I can name a lot of ole school that can sing back in those days you had to actually have talent not just a hook (OK with the exception of James Brown) still not sure what he saying on half his songs but boy what a show he put on!

Female:  Whitney Houston, Patti Labelle, Aretha Franklin, Celin Dion, Mariah Carey come to mind.

Throwback1

I prefer Sam Cooke over Luther or Marvin, but not like they and others aren't amazing, regardless.

Really! Cooke was good but the smoothness and mellowness of Marvin and Luther was just unmatched. More importantly the women like them!  ;)

"women" loved Sam so much they killed him.

Sorry man, Toby is the man. I'm FROM the south, dont know bout you. All this lenny williams and sir 2 much gel.....forget all that. That Oklahoma boy can hail some tunes and he has some good ones.

SMC

Toby Keith as a great vocalist? lol that is rich.

I second those who said Steve Perry for males. That dude has some serious range.

For females, it is the late great Eva Cassidy. If you are not familiar with her, go buy Songbird or Live at Blues Alley. She was a local legend in the Baltimore/DC area who died of cancer in her 30s. She never made it big until after her death, when her music was "discovered" so to say. She knew she was dying so she spent time doing what she loved most (gardening and other outdoorsy stuff) and just played the small clubs. Her version of Sting's "Fields of Gold" is about as pure a vocal as you will ever hear.

FootballGuy43

If one country singer has good vocals it would be Reba McEntire.

WBF †

Toby Keith?

Sure he's decent, but the best ever? The best in country music? The best of his era? The best now? ---All of those are "No".

As for smooth and mellow, you have to bring Lou Rawls into the list.
