Here's one I haven't seen mentioned...

Peter Frampton.

Maybe not one of the greatest, (although he's better than some I've seen listed), he certainly was an innovator.  Some of his early work with Humble Pie, was pretty dang good.

Coach Venny , if it truly was your list it would be biased ,but your list is apparently what others think , so it may be an unbiased list , but it can not be your list , that would make it biased .

The list is OK at best.  Duane Allman shouldn't be that high.

It's just some opinions.  They are just as entitled to be wrong as the next guy.   ;D

nice.

Here a couple I mentioned earlier that are primarily country session players:

Not Rolling Stone Magazine material, but two pretty good pickers I've not seen mentioned are Albert Lee and Randy Scruggs.

CLICK HERE for info on Lee.

CLICK HERE for info on Scruggs, and yes he's one of Earl Scruggs' sons.

I also understand Charlie Daniels did quite a lot guitar session work.

TB, since you mentioned Roy Clark, did you ever hear his album with Gatemouth Brown?  Now there was some pickin'.

To get back to rock guitarists, I think Terry Kath was well respected among his peers.  For those who don't recognize the name, he was a founding member of Chicago and died much too young in an accidental shooting.

Agree he's most known for vocals and as a band leader.  Jimmy Rogers, Johnny Winter and Bob Margolin are some of his better known band members who played guitar.

Waters could play a mean slide guitar though.

Dude, you credibility just took a huge hit.  I own that DVD and have watched it several times.  The Crossroads Guitar Festival for Antigua, which was put on by Eric Clapton in 2007, I believe is the DVD you are speaking of.

Muddy Waters DIED in 1983.

Its all in how they decide who the greatest are.I believe you judge the geratest by how influential they are. There are 4 guys who have changed the way the guitar was played.1.Clapton(The 1st Guitar god)2.Hendrix(He was so far ahead of his time)3.Jimmy Page(The 1st true heavy, hard rock guitarist)4.Eddie Van Halen(He took fast fingers to a different level).

I agree, innovation and being inluential are the measuring sticks.   You're listening to James Burton playing with Elvis one day, thinking, man those are some cool licks.  Then along come the Stones and you hear Keith Richards playing some simple crap in an alternative tuning, on 2 strings and you go, dang that's good.  Next you hear Jimi play [and sing while he plays as well- geez] Think I Better Wait till Tomorrow or Little Wing, and you think you died and went to heaven.  Then Zep and Page [whose greatest weakness, Guitar Player Magazine said, was sloppy picking.  They then said his greatest strength was ,,, sloppy picking]  Page made every young guitar player want to buy an SG.  Then Clapton, who has changed styles more times than anyone, while staying true to his Blues roots hits you with that riff hook in Layla or Sunshine of your Love.  And then King Eddie, tapping his a55 off, doing things not done before.  They changed the way we look at the guitar.

SMC

Late to this thread but this Rolling Stone list is hilarious.

Cobain better than Santana? What a joke. Mark Knopfler in the low 20s is dreadfully underrated.

I know the top 3 have big fan bases but Clapton is the greatest.

True. The only thing that I don't think is right is Page played a Sunburst Les Paul, not an SG also made by Gibson. Page's 1958 Cherry Sunburst Standard Gibson Les Paul was bought in a pawn shop in the US and the 1959 Custom Cherry Sunburst Les Paul was given to him by Joe Walsh. He also had a Paisley Telecaster and A Danelectro. Now his Gibson Double neck guitar is patterned after an Gibson SG. Those 5 guiters were his main 5 that he took on tour during Zep's heydays.

Page played a Telecaster too I think. I have it somewhere in a Guitar Mag.

True.  I was referencing the double neck SG he used in the live version of Stairway.  They have a new re-issue out now that I am trying to talk myself into buying.

You are absolutely correct.  I bought a Lonestar Strat at a Pawn shop a few months ago for half what they were going for on Ebay.

I would tell you the deal I got on a Brand new Les Paul about six months ago, but you would call me a liar and have me banned from this forum. The double neck I seen was just a couple of weeks ago and I believe that they wanted $995.00. It looked in really good shape.

2) Yngwie Malmsteen
3) Zakk Wylde
4) Jimmy Page
5) Stevie Ray Vaughan
6) Jimi Hendrix
7) Buckethead (look him up if you dont' know him lol or just play GH2)
8) Joe Satriani
9) Steve Vai
10) John Petrucci

Buckethead in the top 10?...and no Hammett in the top 5?...that is ludicris man lol

Buckethead can outplay half the people you know. Hammett would get WAXED by any one of my top five.

Hammet vs. Satriani.....hammet plays 3 notes super fast. Satch just laughs at him and procedes to wax him.
and then Steve Vai steps on stage and proceeds to wax them both....................

...and then Stevie Ray Vaughn would come floating down on a cloud and they would all 3 bow before him.

Brendan Small is the best guitarist that 95% of you have never heard of.
