The Dragons won the Arkansas High School Weightlifting Competition Saturday in Alma, lifting 5,260 pounds to claim both the Overall championship and the 2A championship.

El Dorado placed second in the 7A-6A Division and was third in the Overall with 5,035 pounds. Benton, the 7A-6A champion, totaled 5,065 pounds to finish second in the Overall.

There were 55 teams and more than 500 athletes competing.

Junction City has won the 2A weightlifting title eight times and the Overall crown on four occasions.

"We had a very good day today. We're real pleased with the guys," said Junction City coach David Carpenter. "We have a lot of young ones on the team this year. They performed great. Had a good mix of seniors and underclassmen on there. The seniors did a real good job of leading the young guys and showing them what to do. It was a great day."

Freshman Fred Daniels won the 148-pound division with a total of 510 pounds. He set the state record in that division with a 295-pound bench press.

C.J. Johnson finished second in the 132-pound division. Taylor Mason was third in the heavyweight division.

Other competitors for the Dragons were: Davarion Nelson in the 123-pound division, Dez Brown (165-pounds), Daquan Ford (181-pounds), JaQwis Dancy (198-pounds), Corey Kemp (220-pounds), Marquez Singleton (259-pounds) and Matthew Freeman (242-pounds).

Anybody know if Rison participated?  They usually are in there somewhere among the top.

HorseFeathers

Just curious is there a list anywhere showing how many kids actually participated for each team?

I don't know about a list, but there are 10 lifters to a full team (one in each weight class).  ENDT references 55 teams competed with over 500 lifters.

I think JC won a 2A title one year with nine.   Pooh Man weighed too much and had to compete in the second smallest class.  JC didn't have anybody to back him up in the smallest class but Kemp was such a pound-for-pound beast he made up most of the difference without the 10th lifter.

Congrats to the Dragons on another title, Wynne got their second straight 5A title, just came up short on the overall I see.  Still, a good effort.

Rison was not there this year.

Was very proud of Parkers Chapel for taking 3rd in 2A while lifting only 1 senior including 6 freshman

Unusual.  They usually compete and compete well.  Wonder why they passed this year?

Now understand it was a budget decision to not take a team to Alma due to cost of staying overnight.
Maybe they just decided to spend that money on something else.

Knew they couldn't lift 5260

Don't know.  Didn't go.
But they usually finish pretty well, usually top 2 or 3 in classification (and won it before I think) and top 10 in overall.

Why aren't the big schools complaining about all our "out of state" talent keeping them from winning?...
