I'm not going to submit my poll just yet, but I like to go ahead and start the thread just in case someone wants to do it tonight or tomorrow morning before I do it.

So voting is officially open.

1   PA 7-1 (+/-0) Still rolling.  I expect them to roll through next week with no trouble.
2   Batesville 7-1 (+/-0) Likewise, impressive performance last night.  The Chickasaws had such an impressive start when they were playing nobodies.
3   Wynne 7-1 (+/-0) They wanted to make a statement last night and did so, but Batesville was even better.
4   Maumelle 7-0-1 (+/-0) The Top 5 or so have really solidified lately, and Maumelle has emerged as the clear favorite in the West.  Impressive for their first year in 5A.
5   Sylvan Hills 8-0 (+/-0) Should roll through next week.  But can they beat PA?  The world wonders.
6   Fairview 6-2 (+1) With the Hot Springs loss the South is wide open again.  They go to Hot springs next week and have Chapel at home the week after, so they control their own destiny, as do both the others.
7   Greenbrier 5-3 (+2) The Wild, wild West. Greenbrier helped their own cause by beating Harrison last night.  Still gotta face the Veagles in week 10.
8   Watson Chapel 4-4 (+2) What's going on with the Wildcats?  Beat White Hall by 2 scoes last week, this week need 3 OTs to score against Magnolia?  On the other hand, what is in the gatorade at Magnolia every couple of weeks?
9   White Hall 4-4 (+7) Took down the Trojans, who previously owned the inside track to the South Title.  Now the race is wide open again.  But White Hall might just have muddied the waters so much they hurt their own playoff chances, in the chips should fall wrong the next two weeks.  They better take care of business against Hope and DeQueen the next two weeks.
10   Hot Springs 4-4 (-4) Maybe HS was just feasting on the weak underbelly of the South, catching Chapel before they got their act together, then beating Magnolia, Hope, and DeQueen before facing White Hall.  But then again, maybe they come through unscathed Maybe White Hall just knows Chris Vereen too well.  Either way, they'll be sorely tested by CF and archenemy Lakeside in the next two weeks.

Rising in: White Hall
Dropping out: Harrison

Thoughts: The South and West are crazy.  The Central and East are 2-horse races followed by a lot of irrelevance.  The final two weeks in the South are going to be nuts, Hot Springs faces CF and Lakeside, CF faces Hot Springs and Watson Chapel, Watson Chapel faces Lakeside and CF, and Lakeside faces Watson Chapel and Hot Springs.  Those 4 teams represent 4 of the current Top 5 in the South, with only White Hall having an easy road left (@ Hope, vs DeQueen).

Still working on my poll...I seen so many posters saying how down the south is this year...as I look through every poll....I notice 3 or 4 south teams in the top 10.

Chief_Osceola™

I think the same could be said for every conference as far as representation in the poll. The East, West, and South have more parity than the Central, who is very top heavy with two top-5 teams and then no one else.

Lionheart88

The East and Central are actually pretty similar in that regard, I think.

walkingguy72396

The East is getting a little short changed at the bottom edge of these polls perhaps.  Will be interesting to see how Wynne does these last two games against the two teams left that will determine the 2-4 seeds.

michael2370

Nettleton could give Wynne more than they want.  When the play Wynne  should win unless they overlook there talent.

I agree, except I think the 3 and 4 seeds from the East are stronger than the 3 and 4 seeds from the Central.

This won't happen.

I hope Wynne travels to Maumelle in the second round though.  I think Wynne can beat them by a couple of touchdowns and then it will quiet the rest of the west down a bit.  It's unfortunate we have to wait that long.

Nettleton always plays Wynne tough. We barely won there a couple years ago. It will be a huge game for Nettleton. Wouldn't surprise me if this game was decided by 14 points or less.

Its the 5A East, I dont have to see both teams play. Wynne will drop 40 on Nettleton ! Mop the floor wet and wax it dry with the Raiders !  Wynne & Batesville is the 5A East ! The other 6 schools are 3 & 4 playoff spot roadies. Grab you a playoff spot after Wynne suflexs and drop kicks you to sleep Friday night !

Outside of Batesville, Wynne hasn't had to play 4 quarters.  All I can say is Nettleton better bring the "A" game if they don't want to be mercy ruled.

The South and West are way more fun.  Who wants to watch also-rans scrap over 3rd and 4th when you can watch races that are wide open all the way up and down.  Right now, any of the three 1-loss teams in the South (Chapel, Fairview, and Hot Springs) could take the title, or miss the playoffs, depending on how the next few games work out.  It's mathematically possible for the South to en up with a 4-way tie at the top, with tiebreakers being the only way to decide which of the 4 co-champs gets what seed.  It's going to be a great couple of weeks.

Hoghead

^^^^^^^^ Its better like the 5A South and West. No one checks their phone for the GCT vs Nettleton score !

I say wynne beats them 35-21 but if wynne comes out and over looks Nettleton it is a very real possibility that they could upset wynne.

Week 9
Fan of Harrison, still trying to be unbiased.  Have no dog in this fight.
Two games left before playoffs.  South and West multiple teams are still trying for a seeding.  First I looked at Each conference on total wins/losses of 5-0, 4-1 and 3-2 wins/losses and also then the difference of Points For minus Points Against.  This is what I came up with.

Central
pa 5-0 281 70=211
sh 5-0 232 78=154

lr mcclellan 3-2 167 142=25
beebe 3-2 143 123=20

East
batesville 5-0 160 51=109

wynne 4-1 214 54=160
nettleton 4-1 173 107=66

fc 3-2 159 96=63

South
hs 4-1 156 73=83
cf 4-1 188 106=82
wc 4-1 106 75=31

wh 3-2 163 147=16
hslakeside 3-2 219 192=27

West
Maumelle 5-0 169 69=100

harrison 3-2 202 139=63
lrc 3-2 166 116=50
gb 3-2 172-152=20
vilonia 3-2 124 125=(-1)

This is what I came up for wins/losses and Points For minus Points Against Difference.
   5-0 teams
1.  Pulaski Academy 5-0 281 70=211
2.  Sylvan Hills 5-0 232 78=154
3.  Batesville 5-0 160 51=109
4.  Maumelle 5-0 169 69=100
   4-1 teams
5.  Wynne 4-1 214 54=160
6.  Hot Springs 4-1 156 73=83
7.  Camden Fairview 4-1 188 106=82
8.  Nettleton 4-1 173 107=66
9.  Watson Chapel 4-1 106 75=31
   3-2 teams
10.(PF-PA Difference tie)  Forrest City 3-2 159 96=63
10.(PF-PA Difference tie)  Harrison 3-2 202 139=63
11.  Little Rock Christian Academy 3-2 166 116=50
12.  Hot Springs Lakeside 3-2 219 192=27
13.  LR McClellan 3-2 167 142=25
14. (PF-PA Difference tie)  Greenbrier 3-2 172-152=20
14. (PF-PA Difference tie)  Beebe 3-2 143 123=20
15.  White Hall 3-2 163 147=16
16.  Vilonia 3-2 124 125=(-1)

So then I thought of strength of schedule for conferences, Defense or Special teams maybe had some off nights in the last 8 games and can upset upcoming seedings in each conference.  Wins is what counts, but then there is stength of conference schedule comes in.  Conference standing aside.  A lot of great teams out there, I like everyone of them.  But Thinking of Playoffs are around the corner and what these teams can do.  Defense can win games, but I will go with what a team can put up
in offensive/special teams points after 8 weeks of the top 18 teams and my pick for Week 9 for this week...

1.  Pulaski Academy 5-0 281 PF
2.  Sylvan Hills 5-0 232 PF
3.  Hot Springs Lakeside 3-2 219 PF
4.  Wynne 4-1 214 PF
5.  Harrison 3-2 202 PF
6.  Camden Fairview 4-1 188 PF
7.  Nettleton 4-1 173 PF
8.  Greenbrier 3-2 172 PF
9.  Maumelle 5-0 169 PF
10.  LR McClellan 3-2 167 PF
11.  Little Rock Christian Academy 3-2 166 PF
12.  White Hall 3-2 163 PF
13.  Batesville 5-0 160 PF
14.  Forrest City 3-2 159 PF
15.  Hot Springs 4-1 156 PF
16.  Beebe 3-2 143 PF
17,  Vilonia 3-2 124 PF
18   Watson Chapel 4-1 106 PF

Though this pick might upset some posters or poll votes, this is what it is, right now.  I'm thinking not of who beat who in each 5A conference, but thinking on playoffs of who can put up the most points.  Hopefully each teams defense/special teams can move up to the challenge.  There are a lot of Run-and-gun and shooter teams out there.  Good luck to all in the rest of the regular season and in the playoffs.  I like all teams mentioned.

MDXPHD

Come on postal! You know you can't go off of offense... It's all about the defense!

walkingguy72396

OK, now add up all the points the opponents have scored then subtract those from the ones allowed.  Then sub-catagory all the common opponets points scored and allowed, then divide by number of games.  Then wad it up and throw in round file.

Interesting Postal.  Offensive output is certainly an important factor in predicting high school football team performance, but just one.  Momentum, team improvement, coaching (as indicated by previous success), and defense, are all important.  Turnovers loom large, as does more recent offense/defense performance.   With my team, Bateville, if you look at a comparison of yards gained by the Pioneers and their opponents, you would be surprised by their record until you looked at the number of turnovers they create.  It's always a bit funny to me to see comments from posters concerning the unlucky play or sloppy play that led to their teams number of turnovers.  Turnovers are primarily forced and a result of aggressive defensive play - a hard hit, pressure on the QB resulting in an interception or fumble.

3. Wynne  (Agree with Diehard, probably the best. They'll get their chance if they are.)

4. Sylvan Hills (Week 10 coming soon.)
5. Maumelle

6. CF (First complete game of the year.)
7. Greenbrier
8. White Hall
9. Hot Springs
10 Watson Chapel

A lot of 4-4 teams out there. I have a question for you guys (and gals). Is it more fun when there are 2-3 teams truly better than everyone else on a collision course and everyone is waiting for that game (PA/SH, Batesville/Wynne) or when it is a mixed up mess (5A South & West)?

There's a 6-2 team out there that isn't in your poll.

Yep I know. Though about putting them in. If they are 7-2 after this week, they are definitely in. This could be shake up Friday in the 5A South so there may be two or three spots vacated in my top ten. Just hope my Cardinals survive.

Nettleton could give Wynne more than they want.  When the play Wynne  should win unless they overlook there talent.

This won't happen.

I hope Wynne travels to Maumelle in the second round though.  I think Wynne can beat them by a couple of touchdowns and then it will quiet the rest of the west down a bit.  It's unfortunate we have to wait that long.

True!
