Claps and slaps

I am new to FF so please excuse my ignorance.

I never paid any attention to claps and slaps until tonight and I can't figure this out.  What are the criteria?

It appears that each poster has his/her own criteria. Most posters have a negative karma.  I deduce that many slaps are given just because the slapper disagrees with the poster even if the post is logical and well reasoned.  That makes no sense to me.  I will give a clap to a logical post even if it argues that my team, PA, will lose the game.  But, it appears that many folks will slap anyone who argues that their team will lose, even if the argument is well reasoned.

Can some of the old timers help me understand this?

Yeah claps and slaps are mostly for when I agree with someone worthy of a +1 or -1.
