Arkansas: Don Hutson

One of the first things that's discussed when the topic of wide receiver Don Hutson comes up is that the Green Bay Packers star and charter member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 1963 was "ahead of his time."

As time goes on, you begin to understand just how phenomenal the Hall of Fame performer was when it came to his craft. Back in the day before the game of professional football began to realize what the passing attack would mean, he put up numbers that even the modern-day player would gasp at.

In 11 seasons with the Packers from 1935-45, the native of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, totaled 488 catches for 7,991 yards and 99 touchdowns. That's an impressive 16.4 yards per reception. And those 99 scores rank 11th all-time in league annals despite the fact that Huston last took the field more than 60 years ago. He held the record for most career touchdown receptions for 44 years until Seattle Seahawks wideout and fellow Hall of Famer Steve Largent caught his 100th scoring pass against the Cincinnati Bengals in 1989.

Some say that the eight-time All-Pro and member of three NFL championship teams in Green Bay was Jerry Rice before there was...Jerry Rice. Perhaps it's a little more accurate to say that there will never be another Don Huston (obviously), who scored through the air seemingly at will.
