100 meter dash

(I'm going to make the assumption that Michael McGruder will not be running at state because he has not ran in a month.)

1. Darius Fletcher – Camden Fairview (11.11) (11.26) (11.08) (11.31) (11.26) (10.73) (10.98)
South champ. Has ran Sub 11 twice. Has ran Sub 11.10 three times.

2. Floyd Pugh – Mills Univ.Stud. (11.43) (11.21) (11.03) (11.15) (10.93)
Central runner up. Yes, he was the runner up behind Johnson, but he has been consistent all year and has ran very fast times. I see him stepping up at state.

3. Akee Johnson – LR McClellan (11.62) (11.06) (11.17) (10.88)
Central champ. I could see him winning this, but he kind of burst onto the scene late and sometimes those type of runners flame out at state. This is a safe spot for him.

4. Keyondre Jones – Camden Fairview (11.21) (11.24) (11.09) (11.27) (10.93) (11.06)
South runner up. Very consistent runner. Has ran sub 11 once and has ran sub 11.10 three times.

5. DeVonte Davis – Magnolia (11.24) (11.10) (11.06) (11.21) (10.98) (11.24)
South 3rd place finisher. Has ran 11.10 or under three times. Has ran sub 11 once.

6. Justin Bullard – Mills Univ.Stud. (11.25) (11.08)
Central 3rd place finisher. Not a lot of samples for me to use, but he has ran fast times both times they have been recorded

7. Nick Pattillo – Greene County Tech (11.15) (11.14) (11.22) (11.14) (11.11)
East champ. Very consistent runner. Has ran in the mid 11.10-11.20 every time out. Solid bet to make the finals.

8. Corey Martin – Magnolia (11.30) (11.33) (11.38) (10.89) (11.28)
South 5th place finisher. Luckily for Magnolia, this runner AQ'd before conference. I was going to put Balentine in this spot, but Balentine may not even run this event and even if he does, he has two more events to worry about.

Projected scores after 1/17 events projected
Camden Fairview - 15
Mills Univ.Stud. - 11
LR McClellan - 6
Magnolia - 5
Greene County Tech - 2

West champ. Has thrown over 130 five times. Has thrown over 140 twice.

5. Mac Croff – Alma (126' 6") (119' 5") (143' 1") (133' 9") (134' 0") (130' 0") (119' 2") (137' 5")

South 3rd place finisher. Has thrown over 130 twice.

I've heard about Guffin but never really looked at his throwing record.  That 195 throw is a real outlier - was that throw possibly taken under some strange weather / wind conditions or something?  Obviously, Guffin is good (very good) but for a thrower to have one throw that much better than the other distances suggests we should look carefully at the conditions surrounding that 195 throw....

Even without the 195 throw, he's thrown 170, which would still be the best in 5A. I think he is still the favorite no matter what. Discus is a strange event. A perfect throw can improve your PR by 10-15 feet even at a high level.

AT

This has to be one of the strangest years for the 200 I've seen. Almost no consistency after the first few runners.

200 meter dash

1. Darius Fletcher – Camden Fairview (23.11) (22.40) (22.33) (22.17)
5A South champ. Has ran sub 22.50 three times.

2. Justin Bullard – Mills Univ.Stud. (22.51) (22.75) (24.14) (22.80) (22.23)
Central champ. Has ran sub 22.50 once and sub 23 four times.

3. DeVonte Davis – Magnolia (22.67) (22.97) (23.08) (23.14) (22.42) (22.89)

4. Nick Pattillo – Greene County Tech (22.59) (22.62) (22.77) (22.75)

Central runner up. Has ran sub 23 twice.

8. Akee Johnson – LR McClellan (23.63) (22.36)
Central 4th place finisher. He ran an incredible time in the prelims at conference and then sputtered in the final. Here's to him doing the same at state.

AT,

With those distances in mind, do you think Guffin will get some looks from some college track programs - perhaps even some larger ones?

Definitely. If 195 is legit at all, if Arkansas wants more throwers, they should be looking at him. The college weight implements are different. I'm not exactly sure how much heavier the discus are, but I've heard that you should subtract about 20 feet from your PR to see about how well you would throw in college. 175 feet would be the best throw for an Arkansas thrower this year, I believe.

2. Josh Balentine – Watson Chapel (51.03) (50.18)
South champ. Hasn't ran much, but ran a sub 50.5.

5. Derrick Person – Mills Univ.Stud. (53.62) (51.13) (51.14) (53.27)
Central champ. Not too sure what to think about his times. Ran sub 52 twice...and low 51s at that. He wasn't pushed at conference.

Triple Jump

1. Tristan Meye – Vilonia (44' 6") (45' 0") (43' 5")

3. Freddie Lamay – Magnolia (44' 2") (42' 7") (43' 0") (44' 1.25") (41' 10")
South 3rd place finisher. Jumped over 43 feet three times and 44 feet twice.

4. Rayshod Criswell – Morrilton (44' 11")

5th place finisher in the South. Will need to jump better than he did at conference, but has jumped over 42 feet five times and 43 feet once.

8. John Williams – Forrest City (43' 0.5")

Somewhere, MHSGrad is smiling about now..

The distance races and pole vault will be huge for Vilonia.

AT

800 meter run

1. Cody Moore – Vilonia (2:08.94) (2:06.74) (2:03.74) (2:04.59) (2:07.43) (2:06.03)
West runner up. Has run sub 2:05 twice. Has the fastest time in 5A this year. Will know how important this race is for his team.

2. Luke Matyja – Vilonia (2:10.95) (2:09.62) (2:07.96) (2:12.03) (2:05.78) (2:05.44) (2:08.40) (2:04.18)
West champ. Has run sub 2:05 once this year. Has been running good at the right time.

3. Hunter Plante – Beebe (2:09.29) (2:06.98) (2:04.70) (2:05.19) (2:08.02)
East 3rd place finisher. Has run sub 2:05.once. Not sure if he'll run the 1600 at state or not, but that seemed to have made him a little slower in his 800 at conference.

4. Jake Schlenker – Beebe (2:10.39) (2:07.48) (2:04.50) (2:08.62)
East 4th place finisher. He beat Moore and Matyja straight up at a meet earlier and then almost didn't qualify for state. Not sure if he'll run the 1600 either. My guess is no. Has run sub 2:05 once.

5. Sam Johnson – Lakeside, HS (2:09.73) (2:08.42) (2:08.65) (2:05.33) (2:06.56)
South champ. Has run sub 2:07 twice.

6. John Diaz – Beebe (2:11.01) (2:10.89) (2:08.43) (2:15.26) (2:07.47) (2:06.39)
East champ. I should probably have him higher, but I don't for now. I think he just handles the 1600/800 combo better than his teammates did. Has run sub 2:07 once.

7. Diego Martinez – De Queen (2:11.08) (2:10.15) (2:08.90) (2:07.59) (2:08.83) (2:11.36) (2:06.63)
South runner up. Has run sub 2:07 once.

8. Sam Scaggs – Batesville (2:09.25) (2:14.52) (2:15.48) (2:06.84)

3200 meter run

1. Daniel Evans – Shiloh Christian (10:16.16) (10:21.29) (10:06.68) (10:07.99)
West champ. Best distance runner in 5A. Has ran sub 10:10 twice.

2. Austin DeWitt – LR Christian (10:19.61) (10:33.06) (11:12.31)
Central champ. Coasted it in at conference because he didn't need to go any faster. Could potentially give Evans a run for his money. Has ran sub 10:20 once.

3. Ben Fiser – LR Christian (10:38.21) (10:26.36)
Didn't run at conference. I don't really know why. He's seemed out of sort lately. Hopefully he's not injured. Has ran sub 10:30 once.

4. Diego Martinez – De Queen (10:43.11) (10:49.35) (10:58.65) (10:44.47) (10:49.90) (12:09.84) (10:39.04) (11:28.12) (10:53.97) (10:25.85)
South champ. He's qualified for the 1600 and 800 also, which is why I have him below Fiser. Not sure what all he will run.

5. William Goodrich – LR Christian (10:38.71) (10:29.19) (10:41.14) (11:12.34)
Central runner up. Has ran around the 10:30 mark twice. Also qualified for the 1600 and 800

6. Thomas Johnson – White Hall (10:26.85)
South runner up. Talk about coming out of nowhere. Not sure how he'll handle the stage at state, but this is his only event.

7. Johnny Mosso – De Queen (10:44.20) (10:45.84) (10:47.03) (10:49.77) (10:49.45) (10:49.65) (10:32.43)
South 3rd place finisher. Has been very, very consistent. Had a breakthrough at conference.

8. Mathew Brosky – Vilonia (10:42.70) (11:34.00) (10:33.74) (10:37.94)
West runner up. An X-Factor for the Eagles. If he could finish high in this race and the 1600, it's probably a 2nd straight state championship for Vilonia.

I will assume Dedrick Lee of Clarksville will not jump at state even though he auto qualified, because he did not jump at conference and hasn't jumped in about a month.

High Jump

1. Aj Christianson – Beebe (6' 0") (6' 1") (5' 11") (6' 3") (6' 2") (6' 5") (6' 0")
East champ. Has been the most consistent 5A jumper all year.

2. Rayhem Dudley – Morrilton (5' 11") (6' 2") (6' 2") (6' 2")
West champ. In a somewhat down year for high jump, 6' 2" three times in a row is good enough for me.

3. Cornelius Page – Camden Fairview (6' 1") (5' 10") (6' 4") (6' 0") (6' 0")
South champ. Could easily win it, but his 6' 4" jump seems to be an outlier.

4. Danial Curly – Jacksonville (6' 0") (6' 0") (6' 0")
Central champ. I think we can safely assume he is a solid 6 foot high jumper.

5. Jerry Moorehead – Camden Fairview (6' 0") (6' 0")
South runner up. See above.

6. Tripp Reed – Vilonia (5' 6") (6' 0")
West runner up. High jump is so murky this year, that a guy who has cleared 6' 0" once could finish top 5. No offense to Mr. Reed...

7. Justin Harris – Nettleton (5' 8") (6' 2") (6' 0") (5' 10") (5' 10")
East runner up. Probably should be higher, but has struggled as of late. 6' 2" seems to be an outlier.

8. Landon Hogue – Alma (5' 11") (5' 10") (5' 6") (5' 7") (6' 0") (5' 8") (5' 8") (5' 11")
West 3rd place finisher. 6 feet seems to be his max, but probably more of a 5' 10-5' 11" guy...which could be good enough to place this year.

Hey AT where do you get your list of qualified athletes and/or who is entered?!

I just use varvee to see who pre qualified throughout the year and to look at who was the top 4 finishers in each conference. I usually assume that most people will run events they are qualified in, although that's not always the case.

Some of these guys who are qualified in the 800/1600/3200 won't run all those events.

PoleVault16

Very true!I am just taking most of your projections and making a word document for something to pass time! doing a great job though brother! you graduated last year correct?

4. Kyle Plunkett – Shiloh Christian (17.12) (16.16) (16.02)

5. Tucker Rudisell – Lakeside, HS (16.12) (15.82) (17.62) (15.61) (16.06)

May all your predictions be accurate, AT!

Excellent work, sir - take a vacation!

MHSGrad

Unfortunately, I cannot make it today.. Our airline lost our luggage yesterday when we flew into little rock :/.. Definitely looks like Vilonia is the favorite, but a perfect meet from magnolia or camden, and a couple falters by vilonia, and it is even.. Anyone going to be doing live updates?

AT

What I know:

Vilonia qualified Cotton to the 110h finals as expected with the fastest time, the 4 Vilonia pole vaulters are set up to go 1, 2, 4, 5 now, and Meye of Vilonia is 1st in TJ currently.

Not to jinx the Eagles, but running events would have to go rather sour for Vilonia to lose.

MHSGrad

I just confirmation that they will go 1, 3, 4 and 6 in pv.. One of the brothers are attempting a new state record after clearing 16'1

sevenof400

MHSGrad

Mhs placed 8th in pv.. 2nd and 8th in tj.. maybe 2nd and 4th in shot.. have 2 in the 100 finals.. 1 in the 200

sevenof400

Wyatt did not set a new state record but v gets 1, 3, 4, and 5 according to what I am hearing but the official announcement has yet to be made.

MHSGrad check your Pm's.

sevenof400

Current scoring announcement:
Cf 27
V 23.5
Alma 4

MHSGrad

So, V tied for 5th.. They won Tj too.. I'm not sure how he did in lj.. So, they should be around 40 pts before the running events.. Give them 30 in 4x8, 110, and 300.. That's 70 without any distance.. Shiloh, dq, lrc, lakeside, and gct needs to come up huge for anyone else to have a chance

AT

Where did CF get 27 points at? All in the jumps I'm guessing?

MHSGrad

Unofficial mag results:

Shot 2nd
Pv 9th
Tj 2nd 8th
Disc 3rd 6th
4x8 7th

AT

With CF winning the 110 hurdles and Meye not placing in the LJ, things are getting rather interesting...

Magnolia has placed top 2 every year for the past 8 out of 9 years (since 2005).. the only year we didn't was last year, finishing 3rd, and 2004 was a 6th place finish.. Very impressed by our ability to reload year after year
