I think if this happened, it would be a heck of a game to attend. England will definitely come out ready to play. They underestimated that Quitman team which is a HUGE mistake. Quitman is hot right now and district champs for first time in a very long time, England and Lighthouse both still bitter about losing to them and WCC is obviously due a good game. They are much better than they played in Dist. Tournament. I am predicting that all 2A 4East teams win opening round and will have same match ups we saw from their District.

Me too I think the East sweeps the boys

East very well could sweep the West boys. I only see Lavaca having a shot. I think Hackett made a great run in the district tourney, but can't believe they are a 2 seed at regionals.

Eureka and Magazine have tough matchups.

Girls side is a bit more interesting.

I fully expect Quitman girls to beat Lavaca, but they got a strange 4 seed draw. Lavaca's girls played well all year, including beating JC-W twice during the regular season.

The rest of the matchups are very interesting. Danville didn't play their best basketball until the district tournament. Can they carry that over to regionals to get a state bid?

JC-W was upset last year in the first round of regionals by Hector, they are looking to get that behind them and punch a state bid and maybe more.

Pangburn-Hackett is a good 2-3 seed matchup on paper.

The boys first round doesn't interest me much, but the girls first round might be worth making the drive for if you are close.

I don't foresee Quitman having trouble with anyone in the regionals...

Magazine has the talent to win if they are clicking on all cylinders. But . . . that is a big IF.

Their best chance will be if they can handle Quitman's pressure defense.

Conway Christian impressed me more than any time I saw tonight. They just took it to Lavaca, who had that deer-in-the-headlights look at halftime. If they are the #4 and Quitman is the #1, there is not that much difference within that half, unless CC played way over their head tonight. Very nice-looking team.

I think you mean White County Central, and yes they are a very good team. They were the #1 seed at district tournament, but were flat in the last two games. They have beaten the 1-3 seeds from their district, it is a tough district to play in.

It's WCC (White County Central)...the 1-4 seeds coming out of the east in boys are all very close. Any team out of those four could win on any given night. WCC is a very disciplined team and seems to have a very talented coach. When they're firing on all eight cylinders they're salty.

Post by: MICHAELSPAPPY on February 21, 2018, 10:38:48 pm
Sorry. Yes, you are correct. We also saw Conway Christian, and they have a nice team, but just did not quite have the horses for Westside.

I don't know why White County's big guy doesn't just slam it more. Who is going to be able to stop him at this level? Late in the game when things were tight he got loose and tried to do a fancy little up and under move - and missed it. A nice in-your-face jam would have taken care of it.

Stacks is a nice player. They just need a little stronger supporting cast.

13 for WCC doesn't jump as well as you would think a 6'7" kid would. He is very skilled in the post though, and has gotten it done for them. He has a great supporting cast unlike Stacks from CCS. She plays her tail off every night. Too bad she was a senior.

Interesting that you picked Eureka's boys, BigLion. Do you think Eureka just had a bad district or do you not have confidence in Lighthouse?

I'm not sure if JC-W will be the only girls team to win or not from the West girls. Danville is like Magazine boys, if they play like they did in district, they could win.

Hackett is a solid team, but Pangburn is a very solid team.

I have seen Quitman girls look like crap this year more than once. They have 2 or 3 of those girls with horrible attitudes on the court. There coach is a screamer but I saw some of them scream right back at him. I wouldn't be surprised to see someone come up and knock them off.

Boys game should be a good one! WCC has beat Quitman 2 times this year once by 16 and 11 I think but this is a different Quitman team now! I'm glad Quitman won district so our boys no they can't take them lightly! It's a toss up to me! I hope we pull it out! Good luck to all the kids and I pray the weather will not get bad there!

I'll second the "good luck to all the kids and I pray the weather don't get bad" part.  As far as the WCC/Quitman boys game...both teams match up fairly well as far as speed, talent, and size.  WCC has seemed to have their number as you pointed out but either team is capable of winning on any given night.  Not trying to state the obvious but it really just comes down to who brings their "A" game tonight.  At least that's how I see it.  The 2A-4E boys ended up being super even.  I think out of those final four teams to make it that it's just a coin toss between any combo of those four playing each other.  May good luck and health shine on both teams!

There have been some really good games in this regional but HORRIBLE officiating.  The bad calls have been both ways!  How can not one official not know that the 7th fouls means it's a 1&1?  They had to be "reminded" several times during this tournament.  The kids and their fans deserve better!!  I've seen better officiating in a peewee game.   >:(

I agree with the horrible officiating.  The refs have no control over the game and sometimes I wonder if they even are aware there is a game going on.  Last nite a player INTENTIONALLY tried to take out a girl in the Quitman/Bigelow game.  An obvious flagrant foul.  Quitman was ahead by 14 and there was no time left on the clock.  There was no reason for it other than being mad because they were going to lose.  If the refs don't get control, someone is going to get hurt.  Very bad sportsmanship.

It gets worse...based on observations from last night it appears that bad sportsmanship, and dirty play, is endorsed by their coaching staff.  It's one thing when a kid has a moment, but it's elevated to a whole new level when coaches make effort to justify that behavior.

Good luck to all teams tonight! Quitman and England was a shootout just as most of us predicted. Those Quitman boys could have given up down 12 in the 3rd quarter, but they are tough and don't quit! Both championship games should be fun ones tonight! JC Westside girls can SHOOT IT, but how will they handle Quitman girls in their grill all night?

Takeaways from the regional.

Quitman girls are for real. Just WAY more physical than anyone else, plus they have skills to go with it.

I was really impressed with White County boys. They have all the tools, but losing the kid who got injured will hurt them in state; he was pretty good.

Lighthouse and England had athleticism through the roof. The rebounding was fierce, and they have been well coached so that they do not try to block every layup like a lot of the other teams do, and get into foul trouble. If their shooting improved some, they could make some noise at state. And cut down on turnovers.

The East is definitely ahead of the West right now. There is a TON of young talent coming along. Watch out for Bigelow and Westside  a couple of years from now.

Bad doesn't even begin to describe it!  These refs should never call a basketball game again.  What's worse is when they knew they were wrong they refused to fix their error and stormed off from the coach questioning the call!  I paid money to get in the door and it irritates me that they received a penny to do that poor of a job.  I would be fired from my job immediately if I performed that poorly!!

I am glad it's not just me. I noticed in the girl's championship game that they gave the wrong player a foul in the 2nd qtr making it her 4th personal and when it was brought to their attention they laughed about it as if it's what they meant to do. That's how you screw up someones season right there. All it takes is one or two bad refs to punch a ticket for the wrong team. I was happy to see Quitman girls win after that. I had no dog in the fight and nothing against Westside girls, but that was just wrong. Good luck to all teams advancing.

I did have a dog in the fight and I agree the officiating was not the best but I don't think it was lopsided either way, just bad. I do recall the foul being called on the wrong girl from Quitman and it is not right that the officials would not correct it. At the same time I don't understand why Quitman's coach had her on the floor in the 2nd QTR knowing she had 3 fouls already. At least it didn't have an affect on the outcome of the game. As a Westside fan and father of one of the starters I have to give Quitman's lady's the respect they deserve. They just came out and outplayed us.

Don't feel bad, most of the refs in the North regional were awful as well.  Even allowed a coach to jump onto the floor impeding our players who had already inbounded the ball to call a time out.  She was allowed to do that 2 or 3 times.

For the most part it was better than I've seen in a long time, but I think it's because they were not with their regular crews so maybe they tried harder to do their best.  I did see one ref in the EPC/MT game call an over the back call on #55 (his 4th) for being over the back of another EPC player smh! Also the ref that is from Earle being allowed to call the Earle/Salem girls game should have never happened with that many other refs there that could have called the game.
