Quick take: Van Buren fumbled it a lot.

Synopsis of Alma vs. Van Buren

Anybolded phrases are what I thought were the keys to the game. Moments that if they had gone differently could have drastically changed the game.

1st Quarter
Van Buren elects to receive and they started the game off with a bang...or so it seemed. They returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, but were called for holding. If you look at the video of the game, it is a blatant hold, although it would have still been a good kick return without the hold.

Either way, Van Buren started very close to midfield side. They came out with that wishbone offense that Coach Werner is installing this year and they showed some physicality, but Alma did stop them after. I believe the Pointers picked up one first down and then had to punt...and the punt was a beauty. It went out at the line 5 inch line of the Airedales.

So the Airedales set up shop for their first offensive drive of the season with our QB, Noah Dotson, standing in the gun at the back of the endzone, and Alma calmly makes their way down the field capped off by a long touchdown pass. The PAT was no good, though.

6-0 Alma

Van Buren comes out and gets a few first downs and then they are facing a third and long, which this offense doesn't want to be in. The QB does a play action and then is flushed out of the pocket, it looks like he's going to keep it, but he sees a WR streaking down the field wide open and hits him for a touchdown. PAT Good.

7-6 Van Buren

Alma receives the ball and goes 3 and out. Van Buren's defense does a great job of letting Alma only get about 2 yards. Alma punts and VB has the ball around their own 30.

Soon after VB gets possession, the quarter ends.

2nd Quarter
Alma starts off the quarter by making VB punt after very few yards gained. Alma sets up shop at around their own 35.

Alma gets right over midfield and decides to go for it on 4th down, but a bobbled catch out of bounds leads to VB setting up their offense around midfield.

VB runs their offense well and gets around the Alma 35, but Alma's defense toughens up and they make VB fail on their own.

Alma's offense doesn't do much again and they have to punt. The Airedales had an opportunity for a big gain, but there was a dropped pass that made that drive stall. The Pointers get the ball at about their own 37.

With Van Buren driving with about a minute and a half left in the 2nd quarter, they are in the driver's seat. If they punch it in with very little time left, it's likely that Van Buren takes a 14-6 lead into the half. But instead, they fumble the ball with about a minute to go on Alma's 35.

Alma takes no time in driving it down the field and they punch it in with about 15 seconds left in the half. That was a 14 point swing. PAT Good.

13-7 Alma

On the ensuing kickoff, Alma actually forces another fumble and recovers at about the VB 25. They have a chance to score again! VB defense does a good job of not allowing much and Alma goes for the TD instead of the field goal, but misses the touchdown by a few fingertips. End of the half.

When you compare this slate of games to the Vilonia OOC schedule, assuming Alma doesn't come out of their OOC stretch with a slew of injuries, the Airedales should be as significant favorite for their 5A West opener.

Alma vs. Van Buren synopsis, 2nd Half

Anything bolded is a game changer.

3rd Quarter
Alma takes the kickoff to open the 2nd half and returns it to around their own 33. Alma has a 20 yard run to get into VB territory. A pass gets the Airedales into the redzone. QB power inside the 5. A few more QB powers get the Airedales into the endzone on a beautiful drive. PAT Good.

20-7 Alma

VB takes the ensuing kickoff back around their own 24. A good run with a penalty tacked onto the end of it puts VB into Alma territory immediately. A big 3rd down conversion keeps the drive going. A bad pitch that Van Buren falls on stalls the drive and the Pointers are forced to punt. Alma ball inside their own 10.

After one first down, the VB defense holds and forces an Alma punt deep in their own territory. VB sets up shop right in Alma territory.

VB gets a 3rd down conversion to keep the drive going. Then Van Buren is facing a 4th down inside the Redzone when the quarter ends.

4th Quarter
VB starts the quarter by easily picking up the 4th down, but they do get a little lucky. The fullback is hit hard and coughs up the ball, but VB falls on it.

On 2nd and Goal, the VB QB rolls out and doesn't find anyone open, but beats all the Alma rushers to the edge and scoots...and it looks like he scores, but is instead called down to the 1. When I first watched this play, I thought the VB QB got in for sure and the ref just missed the call. After slowing down the video (not the best angle, but the best I have), I can see that he wasn't called down at the 1 because he stepped out, but rather he FUMBLED the ball at the 1. It's impossible to tell from the camera angle whether the ball crossed the plane before he fumbled. Either way, Van Buren still has 3rd and goal from the 1 inch line.

On the 3rd and Goal snap from the 1, the center-QB exchange is botched and Alma recovers instead of VB scoring a touchdown. So Alma has the ball on their own 3 up 13 instead of only being up 6.

It's not looking good for VB, but it's not over. VB does hold Alma after a holding call nullifies a first down. Alma punting deep in their own territory and VB receives it at the Alma 41 yard line. Good field position for the Pointers.

From the Alma 35, the VB QB hits a receiver for a beautiful touchdown pass. PAT Good.

20-14 Alma.

Alma gets a good KO return to their own 35. Alma picks up a few first downs and then...the Alma QB fumbles it about 5 yards forward and like 6 feet into the air. The ball hits the foot of a ref who inadvertently kicks the ball forward. Unfortunately for VB, if the ref is not there, it's likely #7 for the Pointers recovers the fumble and gives them momentum and a chance to drive down and take the lead. Instead, the ball bounces back to Alma and they recover.

Even still, it is 3rd and medium after the fumble recovery. Alma burns VB on a seam route for a touchdown on the 3rd down play. If they had forced Alma to punt, they would have bad field position, but would still have a chance to go score for the lead. PAT Good.

27-14 Alma

The ensuing kickoff goes into the endzone. VB ball on their own 20. Alma does intercept a VB pass, but it's nullified by a pass interference call. VB fumbles the ball again on a handoff, though, and Alma takes over in VB territory.

On the very first play of the drive, Alma burns VB on another long touchdown pass. PAT Good.

34-14 Alma

VB isn't giving up, though. They take the next kickoff and with the help of a long run, get inside Alma's 5 yard line pretty quick. On the option, Alma forces ANOTHER fumble and recovers to keep VB at bay.

Alma does try to run out the clock, but unfortunately, they finally return the favor and fumble back to VB who starts their drive on the Alma 20.

VB scores on a run a few plays later.

34-21 Alma

Alma runs a little time off the clock on the next drive, but have to punt back to VB with about a minute left. VB ball inside their own 20.

After that, VB does a little here and there, but nothing big and the game ends.
