Title: Your early days of Fearless.
Post by: V-Town_Eagle_24 on January 14, 2006, 03:09:07 am
What made you just have to sign up with Fearless Friday?

Personally, I had been sucked in by DR's newbie trap (what he considers "fishing"), and absolutely had to state my point.  'Twas probably the worst decision I have made to date.  Now, look what it has done for me.  I have sat around looking at a message board for 12 days of my life.

So,  tell me... I know there is some funny reason you decided to sign up.

I used to laugh until my whole body hurt just reading hootens and KATV 7's chat rooms, so when they all folded I was just doing a search and came across FF, and well now I have logged 15 days 7 hours and 17 minutes into this puppy!!

I read and not posted for around a year or so, and a friend got me posting around basketball season my junior year in high school.  Now I've logged 28 days 23 hours and 22 minutes on here... I'm a loser.

I noticed a bunch of the football players getting on here one day in my accounting class my junior year in high school and were ripping some peoles heads off when a horrible statement was made about Lonokes disabled Coach Steelman and his legs being amputated...and I remember being so furious at the awful things being said about him that I registered and bit a few head off of my own!  Then I began reading the boards but never posted anything for about 2 years, and then last year  in my freshman year at college I started posting a lot and have been on this place 40 days, 2 hours and 35 minutes!  Oh boy!

Well, the guys at my school would get on here and talk about it, like my senior year I guess. And my dad gets on here just to look at scores and stuff during football season. So, I told my cousin about, thought she's be interested in it, then she got hooked, (I blame myself) so I just thought one day I'd get on here and start messin with her and everybody else, but then my threads and posts kept getting deleted so I had to become somewhat sensible and then I also got hooked and here I am today. 7 days, 19 hours and 18 minutes. Sucks.

I had a teacher in 10th grade that would get on it during class. So I started reading it at home and then my 11th grade year I had a computer class that I always got my work done fast in and had alot of free time so I registered and began posting. I have been on here for 24 days, 23 hours and 19 min.

I certainly wish that we had something like this when I was in HS in Russellville... but PC's didn't even exist then <gasp!>  I heard about FF in the stands at a game mid-season last year ('04)... this place is pretty addictive!  And... I have been pleasantly surprised at the overall level of reasonable discussion when compared to other bulletin board type services in other topic areas (yeah, there are a few rude folks, but they're everywhere anyway and for the most part fewer here on FF).  Fearless Friday is great!

One day in February 2005, Mike Diesel and I were just talking high school football and he told me about this site so I decided to check it out. When I first registered in February last year I didn't really post too much, but I still read all the time and when summer came I picked up the pace and began posting pretty frequently on here. I've logged 26 days, 14 hours, and 15 minutes on here. I know that's a lot, but it wouldn't be near that much if I didn't have this dang dial up internet where it takes forever to load up a page.

Hmmm...I would watch my coaches get on Fearless in class and be like "There needs to be more people from McGehee on here!  Look at all these people talking about us!" and one of them said "Well you should sign up then"....so I did...lol boring story I know.

He would get on at my house and post on here, and one day
he was showing me something, and I wanted to make a comment about it, so I signed up..

I started reading the boards back in 2001 trying to find info about the AAA teams and how Gosnell compared to them.  I got addicted reading the AAAA boards with DR, and then Grog's Rankings...

The first moments that I started really posting was back when Stanley left Gosnell, and we went through that long, drawn out hiring process.  Man, that got crazy.

As I remember it, my ex-boyfriend told me about this site and how it was all about HS football and had a bunch of stuff about PA on it, so I was pretty intrigued. I remember coming home but then not being able to remember what the darn thing was called...so I asked our kicker (who also posts on here from time to time) and he gave me the link. I registered and I've been on here ever since! We had our football banquet tonight and Coach Kelley threw in a comment about my posting on here as a representation of the school...that's when you know you've probably spent way too much time on here!!

Total time logged in: 14 days, 19 hours and 48 minutes.

Wow, yeah, I'd definitely say so!

I started back in '03 b/c a friend of mine mentioned the site.  I was bored so I decided I'd look into it.  I wasn't too enamored at first, but eventually I started to realize that the site had a lot of insightful people that knew the game of football, or at the very least had information on scores, etc. that I would want.  Now I spend most of my time on the After The Whistle, Movies, General Sports sections putting my 2 cents worth in on any topic I find interesting.  I started out using the board to discuss AAAAA football, but now the board has become a hobby of mine, where I can come and talk/debate with people that share common interests with me.  I really enjoy this site.  More so than any other I've been to.  It does in some ways seem like the people of this board are a family, which is another thing I like a/b fearless friday.

Post by: Mike Bonds on February 04, 2006, 08:08:22 am
Well, as you might expect, I was here fairly early in the process......   ;D

It all started in June 2001, when I was trying to find a Newport schedule on the internet.  Hooten's wasn't out yet, and for whatever reasons I was looking for a schedule.  Come to find out, there wasn't one on the internet, at least that I could find.  Not only that, I couldn't find anyone else's schedule, either.

Well, I did get a schedule the next time I went home, and I thought, "I could put this on the internet so the next guy looking for a Newport schedule can find it."  I didn't know squat about writing webpages--nada, zip, nothing.  Didn't know HTTP from PCP.  So, I did a little research online, found out that there were places that would host sites for free, and bought a book that really helped.

By early July, I had some proto-webpages going, but they were ugly as homemade soap.   ;D  I finally figured out how to insert images in the background, and the site finally began to take something of it's old familiar shape.  I opened fearlessfriday.freewebspace.com officially on July 27, 2001.  Included in the early site was a very primitive bulletin board supplied by the provider.

I had never posted on bulletin boards, but the boards seemed fairly popular and I got a lot of emails asking me to upgrade.  I did some searches and ran across the old Pigpen, which I used as a model.  The boards were moved over to EZBoards, which are probably the boards that most of the oldtimers remember.  They had a green background with white text and yellow links.

Well, the boards exploded with popularity.  The screen could hold 300 posts, and they would turn over completely within an hour sometimes.  It was a total surprise to me.  That's a good problem to have, I guess, but it's still a problem.  The boards had very primitive administrative tools, so it was hard to moderate.  Plus, the old boards had a lot of downtime, probably no thanks to us.  I suspect we were burning their servers down.

Eventually, we just outgrew the freewebspace setup.  They didn't allow PHP at that time and didn't offer SQL, either, and it was clear that the EZBoards format was too primitive for the traffic.  So, fearlessfriday.com was registered, and the whole site moved to its own address at a new hosting company.

The boards were moved to a new board hosting company, Aimoo.  I tested them secretly for about 2 weeks, just to make sure everything was really going to work.  When they opened, they looked something like the present boards, just not as slick.  However, about a week after opening up, they started slamming the board with popups--popups everytime you clicked on anything.  My inbox went nuclear.  Clearly, that wasn't going to work, so the search was on again for a board that would function.

I decided to leave remote hosting of anything behind permanently, and I did.  Since that time, anything that has been on Fearless has been hosted right here, without 3rd party providers.  It was a great call.  I eventually settled on YaBB1Gold for a bulletin board script.  Finally, I could recruit help to moderate the forum!  (Thanks to all of those unfortunate souls who selflessly volunteered to do so--it can't run without you.)

Y1G worked like a sewing machine.  People liked it, I liked it.  I thought, "we've finally got things worked out."  Wrong.  Although it did work well, it didn't really contemplate our traffic  (if you ask hSv, I don't think the SMF creators expected it to handle our traffic volume, either...lol).  It was a major bandwidth eater.  By August, it was clear that I if I didn't do something, we would burn down the server by mid-September.  So, yet another board software was installed--YABBSE.

YABBSE worked even better, and the server demand fell.  We hung with that for a year, but we were pushing it bandwidth-wise at the end of the season.  With the growth over 2003, things got critical in October 2003.  I can't think of the hosting company's name (that's probably good for them), but I came in one morning and the site was down.  They said we had exceeded our bandwidth, and that I had a week to either move to a dedicated server or lose the site.  So much for customer service.  With the help of some donating posters and hSv, we moved to a dedicated server.

Outwardly, it worked ok, and disruption was mininmal.  Behind the scenes, it was a rolling disaster.  I didn't know crap about server operation, it was very expensive, and the hosting company was ZERO help.  Didn't even try to help.  That's when I ran into Douglas through hSv, who made life much, much easier.  After our contract with the darkside ran out, we moved to Douglas' hosting company, TheRelalms.net, which I can only give my highest recommendation.

I changed jobs in the summer of 2004, which put me on the road a lot and really raised my workload.  I made a game effort at running things, but I just couldn't devote the time.  It wasn't fair to you, to me, to the site, or to the sport.  So, I handed things off to hSv in return for a promise that I could host future sites on his Fearless/Hogville server (hence CampingArkansas.net, which I've thought about for a couple of years).  All in all, I think he's done a good job here, and he and his folks were willing to devote the kind of time and attention that I couldn't give you and I thought you deserved.

My guiding principle at Fearless was always "Make everyone feel that their opinion has value."  After searching bulletin boards, I found that on many, you had to be around a while or else be treated like dirt.  I wanted a forum where a person could come in and on day one feel that they could be a meaningful part of the conversation and that their opinions about the board and site were vauled.  I think that allowed us to survive the competition and not walk away from the several board wars with a black eye.  It was always my opinion that we didn't have to monopolize our posters--even if they looked at other boards, if we had the best product, they'd always be back.  So far, I have no reason to doubt that judgment.

I just want to say thanks for all of your kind words and support over the years, and it is touching and humbling that people still remember me and the old days of the site.  I hope you will all come over and take a look at CampingArkansas.net and hang with me there, too.

Mike Bonds:

Thank you!  What a great story and example of altruistic persistance to an ideal!  Your creation is wonderful and, of the various boards that I have been on, I can easily say that it is the best!

I will visit CampingArkansas.net.... simply because you made it!

You're awesome!

Mike, you are a good man for creating this site.  hSv does a great job running it, but it is not the same around here without you.  Do you think you'll ever pick up where you left off?

Anyways, thanks again!

I have now been on here for an entire year. I must say my day isn't complete without a stop by here everyday to see what's new. This is probably one of the coolest places on the internet simply because it is almost like a big family. For those involved in running this site please keep up the good work.

Probably not.  I've got a baby on the way (April) and I've changed jobs again to one with far less pressure and traveling.  I'll always be around--you know me, always with some idea percolating in my brainpan.  I usually meet hSv about once a month for lunch, so we still consult about the site.  We bounce ideas off of each other, so I'm around, even if it's in the background.  Football season had almost gotten to be more of a chore than fun, and the time away has really helped with that.  I'll probably be around a little more next fall.

I've been around since it was www.fearlessfriday.freewebspace.com!!! That had to be at least 5 to 6 years ago. Mike kept banning me because I'd make a few unruly comments here or there. Then it turned into FEARLESS FRIDAY. Then I called truce with Mike "008" Bonds and he has yet to boot me out. But this "Fearless Monger" we have now threatened me a time or two.

COME BACK MIKE!!!!!!!!

Same for me....I've had a few alts.

You're right--I never figured it would be like this.  I figured that if a few folks drifted by, that was probably doing pretty good.  I never anticipated the growth that Fearless has experienced.  I don't think I'm alone in that, though.  Some folks don't like the fact that it's not like it was "back in the good old days," but that's life.  Nothing's constant but change, and Fearless is no exception.  And shouldn't be.

One of my favorite memories from the early days of Fearless was Randy Rainwater giving an announcement about the site on air in 2001.  I had sent lots of media folks emails announcing the site, and Rainwater was nice enough to give it a read on air, for which I'm thankful.  At the end he said, "Giving predictions might be a dangerous business, Fearless Mike."  Well, he's probably been right about that.  lol  There have been times when, after the week was over, I went back and looked at my picks and thought, "What was I smoking?"  Still, my percentage hovered around 83%, whcih was pretty consistent with the Demozette and Hootens.

That's the day that I registered.

Here's a little more history.  Back in the day, Hootens was the only stop for opinions.  It really got out of hand with all the sex talk.  The Hootens, rightfully, smashed that site.  Skip was a lot of fun.  That board was where I started to train grasshopper on proper smack talk techniques.  He was a good student.  He finally walked on the rice paper without tearing it.  I have, however, seen him in the middle of several meltdowns.  Grasshopper began to try to wear disguises.  But he could not fool or hide from his master.  Sadly, he eventually went too far and became evil.

I, on the other hand, have always remained pure.  Trying to set a shining example of the way folks ought to conduct themselves on a message board.  I never harass anyone.  I never antagonize anyone.  I get picked on a lot but....somebody's got to take the heat off the others.

Seriously though, I have always thought this board would be big eventually.  When it outlasted three other boards, it solidified its position.  Then with the legitimacy of KARK coming in, that had to be a badge of pride for MB and hSv.  It was a good move for channel 4 as well.  I told folks years ago, that this had potential to be a money maker.  And I hope it is.  I spend more time here than any place on the net.  Wow, that just dawned on me as I typed that.  I spend a lot of time here.

Over the past couple of years, it has become more of a place to gather information and less of a place to argue and bicker.  I think it will be very interesting to see how it continues to evolve.

Thanks Mike.

I joined back in 03 when fellow Newport fan and FOUNDER of Fearless Mike Bonds got me on. also heard about it from a buddy next door.
Although i'm still bitter about the way the site has degraded, but maybe thats just because of the influx of younger kids who don't know forum etiquette. so i left here for about 2 years and didn't post a thing. i didn't even want to read it.  I still say the site should have never been sold to channel 4, it lost all it's grass roots feel.  but maybe thats just me.
i still wonder why the post have the built in censor, and i have another question why are there so many mods and admins.  I leave and the Thee Xbear is a Moderator, that blew me out of the water.

I just lost it when I read your last reply on that thread, RD.  That was amazing.

As for the question at the beginning of the thread:  I remember my Dad showing me FF my sophomore year of high school after we beat PA.  I got on here to look at what everyone was saying, and mainly read the 3A boards to see what people said about our team(CAC).  One of my good friends joined and started posting, and I joined shortly thereafter.  I joined on Oct. 3, 2003, and looking back, I was a n00b in every sense of the word.  Hopefully I have changed a little since then.

Yep.

I actually started off as JuniorLizard70 back around 1999 on KATV, then Hootens, then ARNBC. I adopted SandLizard04 after getting out of junior high. :) Then shortened it to SL04 after pretty much everyone knew me. After I started working with the Rose Bud Ramblers, I changed it to what it is now, which also fits my personality.

There's even been at least one marriage come out of these football message boards (not mine). Who'da Thunk It?

Interesting.  I've only been here since October, 2006.  I first learned of FF from Magnolia's principal when we were hosting the state basketball tournament.  I've got to admit I was a little fried reading a lot of negative comments when so many were volunteering their time to make the tournament a success.  I lurked for months, finally registering when the football season got cranked up in earnest.  I've really laughed out loud many times reading some of this stuff.  (I still can't think pink   without thinking DB!) I've also been amazed at the ignorance some people spout!
It's been great to get to know some good people from around the state.

I had pretty much nothing but good to say about Magnolia.  Of course, we did win the whole thing down there, so that helped a little :)

2001....seems like forever ago in "board years".

I registered in '03, at the start of Conway's run football with guys like Peyton Hillis and Kevin Wardlow. I don't post much on the high school boards cuz I feel too old, but I stick around General and After the Whistle.

Yep, you were one of the main culprits pointed out to me.  I also remember the question, "Just who does this Uncle Ivan person think he IS??  ;D
On a different note, one of my good friends was the local "sponsor" for the Chicks during the tournament.  He chapped a few rears when he sat in the B-ville section during the finals!!

KARK does not own this site.  Nothing has changed about ownership.

ohh, well my bad, it just looked that way to me after being gone for 2 or 3 years and KARK is plastered everywhere, i just assumed that they had bought the rights to this site and hogville. my bad.
It must be just a personal bias as i really don't like KARK and hate KNWA, i believe they are overtly bias to the central and western parts of the state and do not care for anything eastern Arkansas.
The site has gotten better though, i guess i'm just gonna have to get used to it...

Chad didn't like it because it cast a bad light on his favorite program.

Though I was not around at the time, it was great getting a PM from UI on Hogville explaining the "blow up" of the old Hootens board on December 9, 2000.

With that said, I joined up in 2004. I had no clue there was a Arkansas HS Sports board until a uncle was on this site at work one day. I went home and signed on later that night.

It was that, and the whole Cabot vs Hootens firefight that convinced them to shut it down.

After Cabot won state, their fans were dropping daisy cutters on the Hooten boys left and right.

Another bump for those wondering how this place came to be.

You'll also get to see a current member or two come off as a complete n00b.

Also, with the talk of past escapades, I've always been a little jealous of the Stoneman.

His trolling of a fanbase back during the 2001 playoffs was so masterful that he got the opposing team's student section to make signs aimed at him, and they even got a chant going about him late in the game.  I have never been able to do this.  I still remember word for word some of the things he said that week, even eight years later.

You know that you're at the top of your game when you can draw that kind of reaction.

Thanks for the bump Ivan...it brings back some memories....

I came to the site in the summer of 2002 and stuck around for a year or two until I got busy with college, my business, etc. Just forgot about it, for the most part.

I finally made my way back here in 2006 for whatever reason. I try to stay out of trouble and stick to the plan of read more/post less. There are people that I can't stand on here (mainly because they make such poor arguments...or "i cn't b-leave that game u'r talkin' 'bout!!!111loleleveneleven!!!"), and then there are posts by people I look forward to reading, but all in all, it's a wonderful thing....

Ditto on the bump thanks.  I had forgotten about writing that.

Fearless really was catching lightning in a bottle.  I never contemplated it being what it is today.  No one has been more surprised by it than me.

I know that there's been some folks ready to surround the site with pitchforks and torches, but it was always intended to be a clean forum to discuss Arkansas high school sports, and I think it's been that (at least most of the time...lol).  I'm just glad it's still kicking.

I'm seeing a disturbing pattern here.  It would seem that marriage is some kind of aphrodisiac type option to posting frequently on FF.

Or do I have that backwards? Or vice versa?

Ahhhhhhh the good ole days.....

How easily people forget that Mike was footing the bill alone and there were out ages because the servers couldn't handle the traffic. I will not complain at all about a banner.

No doubt. If there were no banners, this would probably become a pay site like rivals or something.

Certainly wouldn't have the capacity to be as big as it is now, regardless.

I'd say it definitely wasn't a profit center.  lol

Back when we had to run on a dedicated server, it was $100 per month.

Fearless and Hogville are so large that they now have to run on several servers.

Here's the thing though, because this site has grown in popularity and has stood the test of time, it will eventually be profitable.  If it's not profitable for the folks that own it, they will lose motivation and it will die.  This has to be one of the most visited sites by people of Arkansas.  I'm going to say that the colleges around the state will some day wake up and realize the potential return on advertising dollars on this site and there will start to be some competition for those banners.

The other thing is, I insist that there will come a day when we have a Fearless Friday Bowl game for some high school teams.  And that will blow Hootens totally out of the water.

The bottom line is this, Fearless Friday has become important.

Right now, Fearless is the 38,252nd most visited site in the US (according to Alexa.com).  Not bad for Arkansas high school sports.

I think the good management and openness to new members has made Fearless stand the test of time and outlast other sites.  I hope that continues.

BTW, Fearless will turn 9 years old next July 27.

I started on the hootens board way back in 02. I joined during the 03 season and I just took off prolly made more enemies then friends with my rapid posts and created the imfamous Simple Life thread. Mike Bonds is the true Godfather to FF and we owe him everything. I met alot of good people through Ff. no
me an Xbear aren't splitting a room. I held the top poster spot and was off for a year came back and I was 3rd. Been some good times. Thing they still have a pic w my name next to every thread. Good memories. I got married and divorced and gave a 7mo old son (Gavin) who is my world. There us nothing like a kid that settles a man down.

I started back in 01 on the katv website. Things got too rowdy and it was shut down. I hopped to the old hootens forum and the same thing  happend. Joined this one in 2002. Been hanging around, ticking people off every since. Love it. Great way to kill time and talk football. I try to come around only during football season so my stats arent that impressive for someone who has been on here for eight years.

Here's to another six! Again, I hope they have internet in the home because I will be very sad if all I get to do is play bingo there.

Thanks FF for much fun!

I got hooked in 9th grade while in a computer class that I sat next to one of the star football players. He was always reading FF instead of doing his class work haha so I started reading. And thats where my name came from. His name was Kirk... he was a senior and one of the girls in my grade kept writing him love letters (he wasnt interested) she wrote him 6 letters in 2 weeks and in every one she spelled his name K-R-I-K.... K-R-I-K.. 6 love letters..... I told him I was gonna make an account and he told me he wanted to know who I was when he read my posts soooooo logically Krik6 came about. I havent talked to him in almost 7 years now but his name has lived with me on this site. Ive considered changing it.... But it would be like trading in old faithful for a new car... its just tough. This name means a lot to me now lol.

I took a year or so off simply because I didnt think much about it... but my senior year I got back on and havent stopped since. Love thi place. Good people. Fun reads.

Back in 2005 I made the Subiaco Trojan student section chant, Venny, Venny, Venny at a basketball game one night at Mansfield. I had them threatening me and asking to meet me  before the game. Little did they know I was announcing the game that night. It was hilarious...I feel honored now that I have read your above post...lol...I have been reading through this stuff all morning and it is really fun and brings back some cool memories. Ivan, do you remember all the Shiloh bashing back in the day with the Williams boys? That was some fun stuff. You, RD and myself at one time drove those three crazy...

Well.....my Karma isn't positive anymore. Should have known better than frequent the Politics board and be a repub along with it.
I made the mistake of accusing Bo of running up the score on CAC one year. I got slapped around more than Tina Turner. I should have just eaten the cake.

I found FF searching for Ark HS football Scores back in 04.  I used to get the Home town paper but the USPS got so slow with it I was getting 2 weeks after it came out.  So one day I was searching and ran across this site and I have been here every since.  I remember we had more HS kids on here back in then because Schools were not filtering their internet as much as they do nowdays.

Oh boy!
I got on because of Rabs

a lot of kids now view the forum and I understand coming down hard on some of the language but at times it seems moderation comes down on something that they don't agree with like topics against THEIR team. IMHO moderators should be more objective than they are.

It depends.

The trick is not to make this place look like HV.  Strict moderation + flood of brain damaged posters = unreadable, incomprehensible board.

I Love Fearless Friday.   I noticed on twitter some of Lanny's tweets and it peaked my curiosity....I read a few threads on Hogville about the Razorbacks.  They have a lot of members on HV.  I never had even looked at the site....I didn't realize how much it covered the Razorbacks until I started reading it.

Flame wars took some time then.

Wasn't all that long ago where you'd have to sit in your truck in the deer woods, straining to hear a weak signal to keep up with the game.  Cell phones, didn't have them then.  And I'm not that old.

Now you can sit in the stand and keep up with a slew of games.

There's a memory.....it wasn't that long ago I used to dial in to message boards with a 28.8 modem.  In some ways, I kind of miss those days...

I also remember the buzz that 56K modems generated when they first hit the market....blazing fast speeds!

How time flies..

I'm uncertain what you mean?? Haha

Had 150 minutes a month. No texting(obviously), huge antenna, bulky, but some dang good signal. You be in BFE and still talk if you needed to.

I think I was in 8th grade when I got that phone. When it was in my pocket, I always got the adolescent joke..."hey is that a phone in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?" Ha.

My first cell was a Motorola Dual Tone Stick Phone that I still have. It still will make calls in the darkest corners of Eastern Arkansas.
