Most Annoying PA Announcers

he didn't know the yard marker either.   He'd say ball on the 42 yard line, errr, ball on the 38 yard line.  Multiple times.  He's so worried about when he gets to do his weird sounding "First down mavericks" line that he can't get the yard marker right or the number of the players.  Do your job first, then grandstand and show off second!

I have announced before, both in the booth and on radio. It is hard, no question about it. It is hard to be unbiased on a PA at the football games. I did it because the administration wanted it that way. They wanted fair and balanced so that's what I did. Again, it was hard to not get excited when your team did good. I never did the "And it's another Blank first down". That to me is so corny anyway and I would not have done it if allowed. Now what I did do was get loud when my team came on the field. But when play started that stopped. As for yard markers and distance and what down, it helps to have a good spotter, but the announcer should have at least an idea of what is going on. What is very hard at times especially with the new uni's some teams have is to get the numbers right. If Bait is having a hard time maybe binoculars or a new spotter?

Now radio is another animal altogether. It is the teams broadcast so going crazy is allowed. I love listening to Tim Terry for Greenwood. Those guys have a good time and so did I when I did it. However the team I broadcast for at the time was pretty bad, so I didn't get excited much.

rice, you just need to ignore HeDontKnowWhoHeThinksHeIs aka Charlie....he is a well known "everything Fort Smith" hater. He likes writing letters to the AD, Superintendent, or anyone else in the FSISD. He complains about our AD, the Southside coaches, the Southside PA guy (me) and anything else that he can think to b*tch about. He is a joke around the offices. People just chuckle at his Diane Feinstein/Maxine Waters rants about nothing that effects him. He kinda reminds you of a guy that got dumped by a Dixie Belle back in high school and can't get over it. Unfortunately, for him, I have met ol' Charlie and can assure you that he was never Dixie Belle datable material.


And just for the record, when I was asked several years ago by our former AD, to do the PA work at Southside, the direction I given was:

- NEVER say anything derogatory about an opposing team, player, or coach.

- NEVER say anything derogatory about an official or a call that they make. i.e "ANOTHER holding call against Southside"

- Always say the same thing for both teams. Use the same words but you don't have to use the same tone or level of enthusiasm

I have followed those directions faithfully. When the other team scores, I say "Touchdown______". When Southside scores, I use the exact same words, only with a tad more enthusiasm.

When the other team gets a 1st down, I will say "1st down_______". When Southside gets a 1st down, I use the exact same words, but again with more enthusiasm.


The only thing that I do for Southside TD's that I don't do for the visiting team is, immediately after the TD, I describe the touchdown play i.e. "Taye Gatewood's pass to Tyrese Soloman for the 65 yard Maverick touchdown ". I don't freelance or get off script. I announce exactly the same thing, as far as terminology, for both teams everytime.

I have called football, basketball, and baseball games for Southside that AAA officials have attended and have not once had any AAA official make a negative comment or express to anyone at Southside that my style was outside the spirit or letter of the AAA standards.

Bottom line is that the GW faithful wouldn't know good PA work if it bit 'em in the butt. Remember, these are the same folks that think that the Daddy "Gladiator Walk", (we are walking our boys onto the field of battle) is not over the top.

Honestly GW PA guy is pretty good, not really emotional one way or the other, does the business and shows impartiality pretty well.  I have never heard him refer to SS or NS as the "other team from "North" Sebastian county" before when announcing scores against another opponent for scoring updates.  He also doesn't announce the team as they come out in some WWE style over the top script. He mentions nothing about past performance, statistics, wins, titles, etc. Someone else does.....but it gets the home crowd excited, I suppose.

The player walk was a mentorship idea of Coach Jones...it wasn't the dad's idea of escorting the boys. CRJ asked the dads to do so to show support. I think we established that about 4 years ago, but some have twisted an idea that was meant to ensure positive male role models were in the kids lives even when they lacked one. Most never wore eye black or old breakaway half cut jerseys .... 

Call it what you will, the reason was not what you make it to be to self serve your best interest now while trying to get back at people that did you wrong or are being ugly on here. One could just as easily start a thread worst fan and I am sure there would several common denominators. I am shocked you finally succumbed to the trolling. After all you are the master, bait....er, right? 

Let it go, you do a fine job (although a few things might be tweaked IMO, but I doubt you will change and if not who cares, plus you aren't catering to the visitors)and it's not like the pay is great anyway.

Bottom line is you don't owe anyone an explanation as long as the school you do it for is happy and the admins are as well. It's a pretty thankless job, most can see that FWIW and someone always is going to play the Eeyore role.

Lord knows, you drug me and got me going a time or two. Even got me called out by the all powerful,Rich Sanders ...well maybe I did that to myself by offering my opinion that I disagreed.

lol, I can't really disagree with anything you have said on here with the exception of the "Dad Walk". You have mentioned that on here several times. It really bothers you don't it? I just can't understand why. It is a positive thing, unlike a QB getting handcuffed to a fence. Maybe if Ole CJW would try this maybe stuff like that wouldn't happen. And FWIW being the announcer is a thankless job.

Okay, I'm gonna bring this one back. How we feelin' 5 years later about the PAs of the conference?? Sylvan Hills still finding "rags on the rotunda" and losing "a Lincoln and a Hamilton" on personal fouls. But, we've seen plenty of change elsewhere!

Unfortunately Mountain Home made a change due to our PA guy passing away unexpectedly.  Not how I wanted that to go.  That being said our new guy is doing a great job, the atmosphere is great.

Sylvan Hills' PA announcers are terrible.  They say some of the corniest things!  "The running back fumbled the ball and now it is like finding a needle in a haystack down there!" "The ref sure looked far and wide down there in the valley!"  Just hard to listen to sometimes.

Are we talking about the PA announcer? If so I love that guy.  I get he is corny as a field in Nebraska but he is fun to listen to. I guess everyone has what they like.  "Theres a bandana in the bermuda".  Classic

I don't know when they started the dad walk.  I know Peacock started the Father Son retreat which I think all schools should adopt.  I think Ronnie is doing that with schools.  That is a great thing and not to belabor the point it is something more programs should consider doing.

They don't do it anymore which I am glad about only due to poor perception by some, but reality was to have a male influence in kids lives that was a positive thing. You can't do things anymore without someone's percention obscurring the intent. I am not a  fan of seeing some kids without good parental influence. I am not always right, but I will always be there for my kids.

This debate is easy to decide, possibly the easiest in the history of Fearless Friday. There actually is no debate. The most annoying announcer, by far, is whoever is announcing the game when your team plays an away game, it's not even close. If your team is losing he becomes all the more annoying. Whenever your team is playing an away game the home teams announcer is awful. When Batesville would play at Wynne I used to wonder if they played records of the Wynne announcer to the detainees at Gitmo to acquire information. But then I realized waterboarding is something we could look the other way at but that Wynne announcer was just plain cruel and unusual punishment. Funny thing is Wynne felt the same way about ours. Everyone hates PA's announcer, when they play at PA. PA fans hate everyone else's announcer. The same holds true for Greenwood, Benton, LRCA and any other school that hosts football games.

If you're from Greenwood, you, on multiple occasions, call and write letters to the A.D. and superintendent of FSPS to complain how the PA announcer hurt their fans feelings.THEN, they show up at my place of business and talk crap and make idle threats.

Some are little bit over the top with all the hoopla and over-emphasized energy than others.  Like the guy who says emphatically "It's 3rdddddd down  !!!!!!!!" in a 59-14 game they are getting mauled at on their home field...at that point give it up, ain't no pumping up anyone in that. Others are definitely take the more "just the facts" approach.

Been to a few it's like a WWE event from the PA or a dirt track racetrack radio promo ...you know the ole 'Sunday! Sunday! You may have paid for the whole seat , but only gonna need the edge!!! " level of showmanship.

Some defintely, seem to make it about themselves more so than others.

Add the whole sound affects things like a  mysterious wampus cat screaming to boot every 5 min. Some have gone overboard nowadays on the music snip as well and the sponsorships for EVERYTHING. Feel like only thing missing is patches on unis from the sponsors.

I think Bait got done wrong , but let's not act like he was a choir boy on here as well that pushed people's buttons at times. Also some digs on the PA that upset a few if I recall...namely not saying GW but rather referring to them as 'the
 ' other' team from South Sebastan county' or something like that in what was a deragatory tone. or in gest.

Not saying it was  justified , but some people get pretty triggered. He definietly got me a time or two, but I for sure didn't talk to any AD's or come to his business to harass him over things said on a mesage board. I still do not know who he refers to or no one has admitted to it at least to me.  Probably a tad too far of taking things too serious.

I also know he reached out to offer donations on some things as well behind the scenes when we were a part of the booster club tryin gto do some things for the LR Hall kids.

I mean I get the whole bitter pilll thing ,plus a decade of straight losses to Sebastan county little step brother / cousin never helps fuel the angst. 

 Reality is he's a actually closet GW fan and alum. The Bait I know is cantankerous but a good guy really and lets not forget he makes a ton of money doing PA work for the Webels err Mavericks. Plus his restaurant is the bomb...shame on anyone for going there to do that. Place is a local treasure.

 Not everybody...I personally think Pulaski Academy's PA guy is one of the best.  His choice of music sound bites that are germane to situations appeal to the intellectual side of me😉

FSPS could have solved this problem by moving Barling elementary back into the Southside district years ago. They know, but for some reason, don't want to change it. Either way, we'll spend our couple of years in the 6A and see what the next cycle brings.
