LEGENDARY COACH WILL TATE RETIRES

Henderson State golf coach and former assistant football coach Willie Tate has announced his retirement after 17 years of service to the University.

Tate came to Henderson State in 1990 as an assistant football coach under former Reddie Coach and Athletic Director Ken Turner. Tate was part of the Reddie football staff until 1999 and served as the Head Men's Golf Coach since 1995.

A long-time assistant at Arkadelphia High School and a native of Gum Springs, Tate spent 15 years as head track coach and defensive coordinator at Arkadelphia High School.

Tate led the Badgers to nine district football championships, as well as Class AAA championships in 1979 and 1987.

During his tenure as track coach at AHS, Tate led the Badgers to three 7AAA championships and finished second in the Class AAA State Meet eight times.

A graduate of Arkansas AM&N (now UA-Pine Bluff) in 1968, Tate earned All-Southwestern Athletic Conference honors in both football and baseball his senior year.

Tate earned his Master of Science Degree in 1978 from Henderson State.

"Coach Tate has made great contributions to Henderson State University and the community of Arkadelphia," said Henderson State Athletic Director Sam Goodwin. "He is truly a legend and we were blessed to have him as part of the Reddie Family."

They were runner up 8 times?!?  That's amazing!  Did they get beat by the same school each time or was it multiple schools.
