Having been a member for a while now it's a big deal for me to win the regular season GL Memorial pick-em. All my encounters with GLion were nothing but good and he always was a class act. I know it prolly takes a lot of time and effort to do these every week HoreFeathers and it's very much appreciated.

The game between Batesville Southside and Bald Knob cost me the title.  I think I was the only one to pick Bald Knob.  13-10 was the final.  If it went the other way, the I would have held on.  Regardless, congrats on a well deserved win.

Let's see, how do I waste the head start bestowed unto me?

Well, talking your ear off with my Mindless Banter might be a good start...!

Ozark (Bye)
The Hillbillies used a style of keep-away that Pottsville would be proud of to ensure that Mena's help was unnecessary in snapping the longest drought since the '70s and securing an outright 4A-4 title, its 16th in school history. The next two weeks will provide a good test to the team's mental strength. Ozark hasn't won a playoff game as a top seed in a staggering 16 years (all 9 playoff wins since 2003 have been as lower seeds), which includes falling short the last two times it had a 1st-round bye. The good news is that, should they show up for Round 2, the Hillbillies will probably be the expected favorite against whomever survives to make it to the Cabin.

Prairie Grove (15) @ Lonoke
A pair of 5-5 teams meet outside the Rock, each taking a different path to their records. The visiting Tigers have prove themselves capable of moving the ball and scoring points, getting held under 15 points just once all year. They seem to get vexed in the face of competent offenses though, allowing a staggering 222 points in their five losses. Luckily for them, the hometown Jackrabbits aren't exactly Exhibit A for the above; they've scored the 2nd-fewest points of any 4A playoff team, and have surpassed 30 points in a game only thrice. While their points allowed looks pretty decent (18.8 PPG), the fact that they've allowed over 30 points in a game twice makes it a bit two-faced.  Still, Lonoke looks to recapture its place as one of the stalwarts of the Arkansas postseason landscape, even if PG might prove a bit overwhelming.

Pottsville @ Robinson (30)
The Senators still can't seem to leave the 4A-4 in the rearview mirror; this is the third-straight year they'll be facing a former conference mate in the playoffs. For that matter, this the second time in three postseasons that JTR is hosting this particular team in R1, and where said team has been might make for a wild prep week. The Apaches have to be one of if not the most inconsistent team to make the playoffs. On one hand, they beat a pair of eventual 2nd seeds (Newport, Mena) and gave the 3A-1's best (Booneville) a 2nd-half scare. However, this same team was gashed for a combined 171 points in their three conference losses. On the flip side, the homecoming of former center Drake Maness is providing a huge jump to their morale. The better Pottsville can execute its keep-away game, the better a game it will make, but it will be a defensive struggle in the face of that hometown speed.

Lincoln @ Hamburg (10)
This game will gauge the conferences of their respective teams. The Wolves seem to have the edge points-wise, but the Lions have played the tougher schedule, which includes a close win over now-streaking HWH. The lengthy road trip will probably factor in, too. However, Lincoln has been down this road before, upending a pair of 4A-7 teams to reach the gobbles five years ago.

Fountain Lake @ Rivercrest (25)
I notice the consensus with this matchup differs a bit from its comparable matchup a year ago. Ironically, the Cobras are in much better shape as a team than Malvern was last season, especially since they look to be getting hot at the right time with a 3-game streak. However, the Colts are on a higher level than Gosnell, and are in prime position to expose FL's struggles against good offenses.

Pocahontas @ Heber Springs (15)
You might notice a trend of potentially-dangerous 4th seeds that could advance to R2 this season, and the Brats would be more than happy to join in after slapping Dumas around last year. However, they seem to lean even more vulnerable, proving they can beat up bad teams yet struggle against better ones. Alas, the Panthers are much better than their record, losing three games by a combined 7 points. It looks like Heber will face off against the 3 in consecutive weeks.

Batesville Southside @ Dumas (20)
Speaking of the team getting slapped, the Bobcats best remember last year's debacle and prepare accordingly, especially against a Southerner side that, in their brief playoff history, has yet to lose in R1. The good news for Dumas is that, on paper, they look to have a edge on both sides, though Southside's D could make things interesting.

Helena-West Helena (10) @ Pea Ridge
Here's yet another 4th seed that could make some noise in R1. Of course, the Cougars probably wouldn't be getting as much attention had they not routed Warren in spectacular fashion last week. That offensive display could bode ill for the Blackhawks, who have struggled against better offenses this season, allowing 134 points in their three losses. Strangely, all the buzz from HWH could give PR a laser-focus to start the playoffs, and getting back key players who sat out against Shiloh won't hurt.

Stuttgart (Bye)
Just as when this bracket was used back in 2012, the Ricebirds get "graced" with a first-round bye. Unlike back then, however, they're a bit more under the radar entering the playoffs, with numerous other teams hogging the limelight. Adding to the parallels is the potential rematch in R2, one that has a more personal touch to it.

Jonesboro Westside @ Dardanelle (20)
Two teams backing into the playoffs face off on the river. After becoming a darling of the first half with a 5-0 start, the Lizards are in danger of having it slip away completely after getting bested by Ozark and Mena. Even in the intermediary wins, there were concerns about focus and execution expressed by none other than the staff. Said focus will be tested in the face of the third-straight high-scoring team Dardy will face. The Warriors ought to show how good the hometown defense really is, not getting held to single digits until last week. Despite holding Rivercrest to 13, though, there are enough questions on defense to give Dardy the edge in this one.

CAC @ Warren (35)
It was this close to being another ho-hum conference title for the Lumberjacks...and then HWH broke out the smelling salts on senior night. Considering what Warren went through last year, chances are the events of Week 10 will get it refocused for the postseason. This bodes ill for a Mustang side that had too many close wins to avoid such a tough trip.

Gosnell @ Arkadelphia (20)
Once again, the Pirates had to fight through the injury bug during the season, but got healthy just in time to snatch the 3rd seed away from Westside.  Unlike the last two years, though, they have to deal with a much tougher draw, starting with a Badger side that returned to its getting-better-over-the-season roots. How the hometown offense fares against Gosnell's D is key.

Star City @ Shiloh (30)
After 8 years wandering the hills of NWA, the Saints are back to what feels familiar: on top of the 4A-1, highly-ranked, and being targeted by tomatoes. Alas, the Bulldogs don't seem to be in prime position to challenge Shiloh's position. Knowing the 4A-8, though, I wouldn't be surprised if it's hard-fought early-on.

Gentry @ Mena (35)
Anyone who despises the concept of the 5th seed can point to this game to argue why. On top of a less-than-impressive 3-7 record, the Pioneers have scored the fewest points of any 4A playoff team, surpassing 30 points in a game only once. This isn't going to fly in the face of who is perhaps the most-improved team in 4A during the season. After getting held to one TD on offense in their first two conference games, the Bearcats have averaged 44.6 PPG in the five games since, the latest being a 14-point shocker over once-streaking Dardanelle. Focus will be key to this one, as looking ahead to R2 can be rather tempting.

Elkins @ Nashville (20)
In yet another parallel to 2012, the Scrappers nab the 2nd seed from midair. Unlike 6 years ago, though, a different foe will be greeted in R1. The Elks had been one of the biggest stories of the year thanks to their high-scoring offense, but after averaging 50.8 PPG in the first 8 weeks, they've only scored a combined 40 in the last two, including a once-unthinkable 12 last week. However, the fact that Elkins has held a lead in 9 of their games so far (and a tie in the tenth) still makes for a dangerous side. Alas, it is because of their defense that the weary travelers have lost 3 of their last 4, and while they've shown to pull some tricks against the better teams on their schedule (like going all-out against the pass v Ozark, for instance), it'll be nothing more than a delay to the inevitable if Nashville sniffs them out.

Bauxite (15) @ Trumann
Once again, the Wildcats find themselves the consensus underdog in a home playoff game. The fact that they keep getting matched up with the 7 isn't helping. Still, one might think that Trumann's late-season momentum should count for something, what with the visiting Miners falling short in two straight heartbreakers. Calling them "heartbreakers," though, implies that Bauxite was capable of winning both games, and how it starts on the road in their first playoff game in 4A will be a major factor.
