About the team
The Airedales had a successful year in their first run through the 7A/6A combined conference and 6A classification. They finished 22-5 overall with losses coming to Paris, Van Buren twice, Russellville, and Pine Bluff. The Pine Bluff loss was in the semi-finals of the state tournament. Pine Bluff went on to win the 6A State title in stunning fashion.

Alma loses 3 starters (Austin Lee, Braylon Parker, and Jake Folkerts). Those players were their best overall player and scorer, best ball handler, and best low post presence, respectively. A lot of big shoes to fill.

Key contributors returning from last year are:

Alex Beneux (Sr.) - A guy who can play any position 1-5 on the court. He's very athletic and is one of those guys who can take his man to the rim versus some of the big guys that usually guard him. A great defender and smart player. The Airedales will be looking for Alex to score this year. He will be a team leader. He can knock down the outside shot if he gets an open look and is set. Good rebounder.

Heath Friddle (Sr.) - Your cliche "gives 110 percent the whole game" player. He's a guard and will probably be Alma's best defender. He drew the duty of guarding Malik Monk last year and did a pretty good job (understatement). Like Alex, he can knock down the 3 ball when open and set.

Will Cluck (Sr.) - Alma usually has a junior who gets no playing time as a sophomore and then steps up and plays a big role. Will was that guy last year. Cluck is really a very surprising player. He is very aggressive and confident around the rim. He will take ANYONE off the dribble and score more times than not. He also improved in his 3 point shooting last year towards the end of the season. He's my favorite player to watch.

Nathan Corder (Jr.) - Alma usually has a sniper from behind the arc and with Austin Three gone, Corder is the next man up, and let me tell you, he can shoot. In Alma's tournament win against Lake Hamilton, I believe Nathan hit 6 threes. Nathan was mostly a 3 point specialist on last year's team, but he will step up this year and may even become Alma's leading scorer. He could even be their best overall player. He's the gym rat of the team. Don't let my bragging about his shooting ability fool you, though, he can take his man off the dribble and finish around the basket.

Noah Dotson (Jr.) - Probably the biggest wildcard returning this year. He's a very well built young man who won't be pushed around by any guard (which is what Noah plays). He can really bully himself to the hole against most any guard and if he finds the touch, he can finish. He even made some big threes for Alma last year and I've heard he was finding his groove behind the arc in summer ball.

People I expect to step up:
Alex Key (Sr.) - Will probably play post. Sort of a tweener.

Christian Stahler (So.) - Son of Coach Stahler. A big man who can shoot.

Kade Wood (So.) - A true big man with some good post moves.

Brayden Johnson (So.) - A very skilled basketball player. Brayden is a scorer and very confident player.

Garrison Jensen (So.) - Yes, another Jensen (not the last one either). A very skilled ball handler and strong guard. Very smart.

My predictions/thoughts
I think this is one of the deepest teams Alma has had in awhile. Coach Flenor usually tightens his bench as the season progresses much like other coaches, but I will be interested in seeing how he tightens this one because he has so many players that can play.

Losing Lee, Parker, and Folkerts is big, though. Those were 3 senior leaders who each brought something huge to the team as I mentioned earlier.

With so many moving parts and new faces, I think the team might have growing pains have first. They have a strong nucleus, but some of them are football players (Beneux, Friddle, Dotson) and will have to adjust at first. Two tough road tests to start the year will be good for this team.

By the time conference rolls around, I think Alma will be a very tough contender in each game like they were last year. I think they may even still be the favorite to get the 6A Central 1 seed. (Don't know about what Russellville lost and gained).

I say the 7A/6A Central finishes like this:

1. Van Buren
2. Conway
3. Bryant
4. Alma
5. Catholic
6. Russellville
7. Siloam Springs
8. Greenwood

I'm hoping the Airedales exceed my expectations like they usually do.

I disagree with Conway being ranked second, they return only 1 starter from a year ago. The Conference title will come down to VB and Bryant. The Hornets return their top 10 kids from a year ago led by All-State guard Kevin Hunt and Roman Martin. The Hornets also swept the Cats a year ago. I also look for Catholic to finish ahead of Alma and Conway. The Rockets return 4 starters led by Chad Worten and Lance Thomas.

Will the transfer from Van Buren be a contributor this year.

Yes, I forgot about Harms. He will most assuredly contribute this year.

RTF

Hey Almatrakster is Stahler still an assisant Boys Coach there?

What's the starting lineup this year

No telling. Coach Flenor usually starts his football guys even in their first game back. He did last year.

I could see something like this:

1 Man - Noah Dotson
2 Man - Nathan Corder
3 Man - Heath Friddle
4 Man - Will Cluck
5 Man - Alex Beneux

Bench
1 man: Garrison Jensen, Eugene Whitney
2 man: Jonny Harms
3 man: Brayden Johnson
4 man: Christian Stahler
5 man: Kade Wood

Any Alma people make it to FHS tonight?

No, heard we have some improving to do, but that was to be expected with so many contributors still in football.

AT

Basketball season in Alma now. Still a bit undecided on the schedule completely, I'll try to update once I find a more concrete schedule.

Lake Hamilton is the first game, though, I'm pretty sure.

AT

Alma's schedule right now is saying that the Bentonville game is at Bentonville even though Bentonville is reporting the game at Alma. Not sure about that one.

Everything else should be locked in.

P.F.G.

Alma at bentonville. After some of the calls they had go against them last year they will be motivated this year. The next could years for alma will be really fun to watch.

HorseFeathers

So...Is the Charles B Dyer Classic a way for Alma to remind the local small schools they are inferior at basketball?

P.F.G.

Boys side is a joke. Girls has been pretty competitive. Funds a scholarship for someone who played a huge part in alma over the last 30 years.

Ah so it's for a good cause...it looks a lot better now that I know that

P.F.G.

Between that and the Airedale classic our tournaments are really weak. Thankfully we get state when we bid on it.

And met.....

......with....

Well...I don't know about all that. He may be met by a long line of people with hammers.

AT

If Steve isn't "back" by the time Alma is back in 5A basketball, then who's going to get the Clarksville and Harrison fans all up in arms?

Pretty sure he's going to be back before this football season is over... ;D

AT

Alma Airedales and Airedalettes go to Lake Hamilton tomorrow. Long trip but a good road test.

any stats or surprises? how did harms do?

Steve Perry 2.11

The Alma girls didn't shoot one FT the entire game. LH shot 27.......

Don't quite understand that.

casper07

Sounds like Alma was much slower and fouled more to me.

No way that one team can foul 27 and the other team NOT FOUL EVEN ONCE??

NO Team is that perfect.

Anddddddd PL is clueless about basketball ::)

Anddddddd PL is clueless about basketball ::)

Or meaning total team fouls?   Don't you have to have like 5 or something like that?

Technical foul on the bench or personal foul is automatic to the line FT.

I'll admit I dont know a lot about basketball.    So explain?  :)

You have to have seven team fouls in a half before it's an automatic shooting foul. The fact that Alma shot 0 free throws doesn't mean that there weren't any fouls called on LH, it simply means that LH never got to seven team fouls in a half and never fouled Alma in the act of shooting.

7 not 5....I was close....And wouldn't that seem kinda unusual for a team to accomplish that?

I understand defense but really?

Thanks for explaining, btw. :)

WPWells

Yes, it's unusual, but it's definitely not unheard of

Steve Perry 2.11

My point was simply...LH didn't foul us once in the act of shooting?  Uh huh..

zebrafan

How did LH look? Cant wait to go check that arena out!

zebrafan

Beautiful place...wish there was a Zebra on that court haha :)  Steve kinda caught off guard by the final...figured the Airdales would have taken the W last night! What can the Zebra fans expect from the Wolves this bball season?

AT

Lake Hamilton is quick to the hole and has a good shooter in Matlock (spelling?). A good big man, also.

Alma had five key players who just got out of football a week ago. They are also very inexperienced. Alma fans will have to be patient with this group. These will be good learning experiences for this group as long as they don't get down on themselves.

AT

Lake Hamilton almost beat a much more experienced team last year at Alma. Took overtime for the Airedales to beat the Wolves. Not surprised by the result here, more by the margin.

I went to bed and it was close midway through the 3rd.

Have to shake that one off, though. The Airedales and Airedalettes travel to Bentonville next Tuesday.
