Trade:

Boston Red Sox receive:

Ryan Madson, RP
JA Happ, SP/RP

Philadelphia Phillies receive:

Brad Penny, SP
Billy Traber, RP

What a steal. I contest that I am the best virtual GM out there.

With Jon Lester coming off the DL in a few days after the All-Star Break I no longer need Penny, and after shopping him around I realized I could get a really solid return for him. Madson goes immediately to the Red Sox 'pen, and Happ goes to Pawtucket as a helluva prospect. Not a demotion because he had been with Lehigh Valley when I traded for him.

I also continue to improve my budget room for re-signing my FA's and others in the off-season, and I'm going to need all I can get because I have a lot of guys who will be FA's. Penny was making $6.5M and Madson and Happ are both under $1M each.

msubulldogs21

With the trade deadline just a few weeks away I've been wheelin' and dealin'. Check out these trades, all at the AA level:

Red Sox receive:

1B Mo Acosta: age 20, .322 AVG, 6 HR, 39 RBI, .360 OBP
RP Colt Ingram: age 20, lefty, 8-2, 2.40 ERA, 71.1 IP, 47 H, 60 K

Padres receive:

LF Paul McAnulty: age 28, .285 AVG, 3 HR, 30 RBI
C Raymundo Angel: age 21, .260, 0 HR, 5 RBI

Red Sox receive:

LF Moises Holder: age 20, (switch) .316 AVG, 7 HR, 42 RBI, .360 OBP, 40 SB
CF Cornell Cuellar: age 18, .275 AVG, 4 HR, 30 RBI, .320 OBP

Rangers receive:

1B Chris Carter: age 26, .295 AVG, 1 HR, 34 RBI
CF Jon Van Every: age 29, .290, 2 HR, 26 RBI

Red Sox receive:

CF Jorge Villacis: age 18, (switch) .314 AVG, 14 HR, 55 RBI, .375 OBP

White Sox receive:

RF Chip Ambres: age 29, .245 AVG, 1 HR, 15 RBI

In case you haven't picked up on it, I basically just traded older players in their late 20s in AA for good young prospects who are 20, 20, 20, 18, and 18. And last time I checked, players who are 28 or 29 and still in AA usually don't get to the majors, so these are pretty awesome deals not to mention I got the better players back in return. What's funny is that after trading for them the Padres immediately called up McAnulty to the majors from AA, and promoted Angel to AAA. The Rangers did the same thing calling up Carter and Van Every to the majors straight from AA, and the White Sox with Ambres.

msubulldogs21

More minor league trades as the deadline approaches:

Red Sox receive:

(AAA) 3B Livan Costello: age 18, .325 AVG, 6 HR, 34 RBI, A potential
(AAA) C Samual Register: age 20, .307 AVG, 3 HR, 53 RBI, B potential

Orioles receive:

C Jason Varitek: age 37, .229 AVG, 5 HR, 18 RBI (as a backup)

Right after this deal I called up Costello to the Red Sox and sent down 18 year old SS prospect Merkin Mahoney to Pawtucket. Costello will be a backup INF, but he will see some action. I also called up my AAA catcher Jarvis Bruntlett to be my backup C now. He was hitting .345 with 5 HR and 14 RBI in 21 games with Pawtucket. You might recall me trading for this guy earlier in the thread. He was with the Travelers when I traded for him actually.

Red Sox receive:

(AA) SP Jose Chacin: age 18, (lefty), 1-10, 4.61 ERA, 57 Ks, A velocity, A potential, B stamina

Rockies receive:

(AAA) SP Charlie Zink (age 29)
(AAA) RP Enrique Gonzalez (age 26)

You're probably wondering "Why did you trade for a guy who was 1-10?". His stats aren't great thus far, but when I can get an 18 year old flamethrowing lefty SP for your middle of the road AAA SP and RP, I'm going to do it. Chacin appears to have really good stuff, just hasn't gotten it together although again he's only 18. I'm excited.

Red Sox receive:

(AA) SP Yamil Cervantes: age 18, B potential, AA All-Star

Brewers receive:

(AAA) SS Gil Velazquez: age 29, .285 AVG, 8 HR, 50 RBI

I called up Cervantes to AAA Pawtucket after the trade so I don't have his exact AA stats, but he was dominating with an ERA in the 2s. 3 of the 5 players in my AAA rotation are AA guys who I just called up. Anxious to see how they fare.

@ Toronto - L 5-3
@ Toronto - W 3-2
@ Toronto - L 5-4

You gotta be kidding me. I had Beckett on the mound cruising and up 4-2 in the bottom of the 8th, and with 2 outs Jose freaking Bautista hits a 2 run bomb to tie it. In the bottom of the 9th Ryan Madson struggled and his confidence meter was way down and he ended up allowing a walk off single with 2 outs.

Huge series to finish out this 6 game road trip coming up with 3 @ Texas. They're currently sitting 2 back of me in the Wild Card race right now.

Jon Lester makes his LONG awaited return from the DL (2 months) in the series opener. Wooo.

Lester vs Padilla
Dice-K vs McCarthy
Greinke vs Feldman

I need 2 of these.

So last night in my 1st game @ Texas I played my most epic game of all time. You will not believe how ridiculous this game was.

Lester was awesome and I led 2-1 in the 8th, but Delcarmen ended up giving up the tying run. Fast forward to the top of the 16th. Yeah, seriously. Anyway, Chris Davis hits a 2 run bomb to put me up 4-2 - I'm fist pumping and everything. In the bottom of the 16th, Papelbon was shaky and allowed several hits and the Rangers ended up tying the game 4-4. Fortunately I was prepared for this and had Zach Greinke already warming up. I had no one else left. (Greinke is scheduled to start Game 3 of this series, by the way.) I brought in Greinke and he got me out of the jam. Onto the 17th! Youkilis singled in Pedroia with 2 outs to give me a 5-4 lead. In the bottom of the inning Greinke ran into some trouble and the Rangers got men on 1st/3rd with 2 outs. I was about to flip out. I had Dice-K warming up (again, I REALLY wanted this game) and he came in and got a ground out to end the game and get the save. Hahaha. Holy crap what a marathon that was. And the best part? Dice-K starts Game 2 which I'm about to play. Greinke ended up getting the win, so he has the potential to get 2 wins in the series.

That game literally lasted 1 hour and 45 minutes.

I just want to let everyone know that I played Josh on this game & he only beat me 8-4 with it being my first time playing the game. :)

I'll also let it be known I threw pitches down the middle probably 50% of the time. I stopped that after Troy Glaus hit a grand slam. :)

The most epic thing about this is that we were texting each other updates from our games and had game winning HR's within minutes of each other lol.

Hahaha, absolutely.

It was close to the 1:45 a.m. mark. That win was incredibly satisfying.

RHS

1:45 for a video game of baseball is freaking long man.

I remember texing J-Lo when I had an epic game in AAA going on and had to decide if I wanted to go get food or finish my game since a storm was coming in. I opted for food and came back to a blacked out house.

msubulldogs21

@ Texas - L 5-3
@ Texas - W 8-1

Ended up taking 2 of 3 from the Rangers which was huge. They're right on my heels in the Wild Card race.

My offense finally got going in the rubber game of the series. Chris Davis hit a 3 run bomb and JD Drew added a solo shot. It was nice to finally score some runs for a change. Oh, and Zack Greinke got 2 W's in the series, lol.

msubulldogs21

By the way, I updated the stats and standings back on the first post of the thread.

I also updated my season game log/schedule in the second post so you can check that out too.

I'm really surprised at all the offense in this one. Lackey is currently the AL Cy Young favorite and Beckett is having a great year but got knocked around as well. That trade for Ryan Madson and JA Happ is really paying dividends. Happ is awesome. He has a lot of stamina so he can pitch multiple innings without getting tired. Lots of value in him.

Balfour: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, BB, 0 K

What a huge win sweeping the 2 game series from them, in Tampa no less. Beating Shields was no small task given that he's like 2nd in the AL Cy Young voting right now. Sadly Jason Bay lost his 17 game hit streak and Brendan Harris lost his 14 game one.

I've trimmed the Rays lead down from 7 games to just 1/2 a game in about 10 days as they have now lost 5 straight. I'm about to take my 6 game winning streak into New York for 4 @ the Yankees. Another huge series.

Pitching Probables:

8/6 - Pettitte vs Lester
8/7 - Sabathia vs Dice-K
8/8 - Hughes vs Greinke
8/9 - Burnett vs Buchholz

Bay is having a monster of a year. Have you resigned him yet?

Seems the AL West is a bit stronger in your game than in mine.

He's a FA, but you can't re-sign players during the season.

I'm going to eventually post player contracts to show who's going to be an upcoming FA, salaries, etc.

Hey, I finally found something I like about 2K9 better than the Show!  ;D

You can re-sign players in the middle of a season to anm extension on 2K9.  Now, all 2K9 needs to do is make their game play more realistic, tougher, and some other things, and it'd be as good as The Show.

Holy crap what a game. One of the best (and craziest) games of the season to this point. I got in and out of so many jams in the late innings it was unreal. Papelbon was the MVP of this one, throwing 2 1/3 hitless innings in relief to get the W. He's definitely unavailable for the next game. In the bottom of the 11th I pinch hit Youkilis for Costello, and Youk hit the walk off 2 run bomb over the Monstah. Wow. What an amazing game.

bulldogs1159

Walk off, nice. Now you just need to be in 20 other extra inning games and you will be right with me lol. And does it annoy you as much as me when your players get ejected arguing at first? I think thats the only time they can cause I've never seen one get ejected arguing at the plate.

Yes. It annoys the crap out of me. I have 2 more box scores to post later, but Ellsbury got ejected for the 2nd time in 3 games. I was resting Drew for a reason (energy), but I had no one else to play the OF so I had to put him in there. Ugh.

Again, what a freaking game. I was down 5-4 entering the bottom of the 9th and they brought on Brandon Lyon to close it out. My awesome 18 year old infield prospect Costello singled to lead off the inning, followed by Teagarden doubling to make it 2nd/3rd with no outs. Chris Davis pinch hit for Harris and hit a sac fly to tie it, but Teagarden remained on 2nd until a past ball when Ellsbury was up. Ellsbury then hit the walk off sac fly. Great comeback.

As of right now, 3 games.

I have a HUGE 3 game series at Texas next. They're currently 1 GB of me in the AL Wild Card.

Took 2 of 3 @ Texas. Huge to gain a game on them in the WC race.

8/15 - W, 10-4
8/16 - L, 6-1

Josh, I don't know if you've been reading my thread, but the Red Sox are running away with the East and have the best record in baseball.  I've won 20 in a row with the Braves and am still a 0.5 game back of the Red Sox in the race for the best record in baseball.

I won 2/3 @ Toronto. Had an offensive explosion the first two games.

8/18 - W, 17-3
8/19 - W, 9-3
8/20 - L, 4-1

And now I've gone home to start a 10 game homestand and dropped the first two against the Yankees.

8/21 - L, 7-6
8/22 - L, 6-3
8/23 - W, 5-4

Papelbon had Jeter down to his last freaking strike in the 9th in Game 1 and he hit a 2 run HR to put them ahead, and of course Rivera closed it out. It was all I could do to not throw my TV out the window. Most frustrating loss of the season. Now I have to face Sabathia to avoid the sweep.

Ended up avoiding the sweep by the Yankees. That was a big win.

They roughed up Jon Lester for 6 ER in 4 2/3, then JA Happ just had to take one for the team. I didn't want to waste my 'pen on a game that was already out of hand, so Happ stayed in a lot longer than he normally would have. I think he gave up 7 ER. But yeah, they were crushing everything to begin with. Just one of those games.

I'm in serious danger of not making the playoffs.

9/1 @ Tampa Bay - L, 3-2
9/2 @ Tampa Bay - W, 5-2
9/3 @ Tampa Bay - L, 9-2

I really blew game one. It was tied in the 9th and I took a 2-1 lead on a Brendan Harris RBI single, and in the bottom of the inning Papelbon blew up and gave up 2 runs on several hits. This infuriated me. Lester dominated game two and I picked up the win, but James Shields destroyed me in game three and the Rays took the series.

9/4 @ Chicago WS - L, 5-4

I'd like to lay this one at the foot of my defense. I was up 3-0 in the 3rd and the White Sox led off with a double to start the inning. Next batter hits a grounder to SS and the baserunner tries to go to 3rd. A decent throw would've had him easily pegged, but Brendan Harris throws it INTO THE DUGOUT and of course the runner scores, and the other runner advances to 2nd. Following this came a Zach Greinke meltdown, who gave up all 5 runs (4 ER) following that horrendus throwing error. There was also a route grounder that same inning that went under Mike Lowell's glove. F me.
