This Friday, Alma will travel to Russellville for not only a conference game, but a conference game that counts towards the playoffs. This game is HUGE. Winning on the road against Russellville when only 6 games count towards the playoffs could really go a long way into putting Alma in the playoffs believe it or not.

Does this count for the Airedalettes as well?   What is their current record?

I know the Boys team has been playing wonderfully by some articles I read by Eric Bolin and Kevin Taylor, not to mention your updates as well Trackster. :)

Yes, counts for the Airedalettes as well. I believe their record is 8-4.

I agree with that a little bit. I get what your saying SNWA. Now cant, or wont the AAA play playoff games there from other classes. For example, playing 7a , or 5a tournament games there?

And on the subject kinda....
That palace at Alma is seriously maybe the best on campus HS only arena in the nation. Every team should get a chance to play there I think. Why dont they let like 1a, 2a teams put on their own tournament and such there, to get that experience. Cause wow that's a whole another level of experience playing there.
I know there was at least some talk a few years ago of Mountainburg (a 2A school about 10-15 minutes north of Alma) putting in a bid to host state at Alma's arena.  But it didn't happen for various reasons -- may have been a year Alma themselves bid to host and got it.  I know in years past schools have hosted at a nearby college's arena.  When I was a sophomore at Alma, we hosted the AAAA (that's how it was written then instead of 4A) state tournament at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith who has an arena comparable to Alma's current gym.  At the time (that was in 2003), though, Alma had a tiny gym that didn't even come close to meeting the seating requirements to host state.

I haven't heard of a situation where one high school came to an agreement with another nearby high school to host state at their gym, but maybe it's happened.

So I must ask, with my newness to Arkansas.....what exactly are these "TB" points and how are they calculated?

AT

Tuesday action and analysis:

Alma-Greenwood (Girls)
With the 6A Central standings really coming down to who will grab the other two playoff spots between Alma, Siloam, and Russellville, the Alma/Greenwood game really isn't that big because most people know what to expect. I'm hoping the Airedalettes can pull of the huge shocker, but if they don't, their playoff hopes still come down to the remaining Russellville game and two Siloam games.

Alma-Greenwood (Boys)
The 6A Central boys seems to be more competitive and even if Alma is the best one out of that bunch and Greenwood is the worst, a road rivalry game is never easy for the visiting team. I expect Alma will have to battle. If Alma can win their first two 6A games on the road, they will be in good shape for the playoffs already. Greenwood could use this game to make the playing field even in the 6A Central with a win. If the Bulldogs lose, then it might come down to Greenwood's two games against Russellville for the remaining playoff spot.

Russellville-Bryant (Girls)
The game doesn't matter in terms of playoffs, so I won't say too much about it. I don't know what to expect here really. Should be a close game.

Russellville-Bryant (Boys)
Bryant boys will be the favorites, but Russellville has lost two games by 1 point and another by 10 points. Perhaps the Cyclones give Bryant a run for their money.

Mount St. Mary's-Conway (Girls)
Conway girls may take out some frustration this game and it may not be pretty. I'm thinking Mount St. Mary's will probably have to rely on their games against Bryant for the playoffs.

Little Rock Catholic-Conway (Boys)
I'm very interested in seeing the results of this game. I think Conway is the favorite, but Catholic has been playing tough all year. If Conway loses this, they are actually in danger of missing the playoffs. Catholic realizes how big of a game this is and with a win, they put themselves in good position for the playoffs.

Siloam Springs-Van Buren (Girls)
This might be a somewhat interesting game. For me, this would be interesting because it's a litmus test for Alma's girls.

Siloam Springs-Van Buren (Boys)
See above.

TB points are tiebreaker points and they are used as part of the tiebreaker process to determine end of season standings results. In basketball, a team can only earn as many as (but no more than) 10 tiebreaker points per conference game depending on the margin of victory.

Example: Team A 75 Team B 65 ... Team A would earn 10 tiebreaker points.

Example: Team C 75 Team D 70 ... Team C would earn 5 tiebreaker points.

Example: Team E 75 Team F 40 ... Team E would earn 10 tiebreaker points.

sevenof400

CincyGuyintheFort,

Trust me, you will likely need these at the end of the season....from the AAA Handbook - click here to view in full.

Rule 10. BASKETBALL TIE-BREAKING PROCEDURE ALL CLASSES
A. If two teams are tied from regular season conference play, tie-breaker procedures will be:
1. Head to head in regular season conference play.
2. If the two teams have split, margin of victory between the two teams, with a maximum of 10 points
per game.
3. If the two teams are still tied, all winning conference game points, with a maximum of 10 points per
game.
4. Forfeited games. Offended teams shall receive 10 points when tabulating the sum of the winning
margins for breaking conference ties.
5. If the two teams are still tied, a coin flip by the Arkansas Activities Association's Executive Director
or his designee will decide seeding.

B. If three or more teams are in a tie from regular season conference play, tie-breaker procedures will be:
1. Head-to-head competition
2. If a team has been defeated by one of the other teams twice (or once when a single round robin is
used), they will be eliminated.
3. If two teams remain, the teams would go to step two listed above in Paragraph A.
4. If step two does not break the tie, step three would follow, then step four, then five. If three teams
remain, the teams would go to Paragraph C.

C. If three or more teams are tied and each team has split (or a perfect triangle), each position will be
decided using the two team tie-breaking procedure in Paragraph A to determine which two teams go
head to head for the first available position. First, tabulate the margin of victory in all conference
games (up to 10 points per game). The two teams with the greatest margin of victory in conference
games shall utilize the procedure in Paragraph A to determine the first position available. Use the
same process to determine the second position available and all other positions available for the
teams involved in a three or more team perfect triangle tie.

Great win for the Airedales tonight. Greenwood may be the non playoff team from the Central, but they are tough to put away (ask Siloam Springs) and it's a road rivalry game.

Jake and Austin did the majority of the scoring again. Refs were touchy on calls tonight.

Greenwood came out, spread the floor, and played one on one. They got out to a 9-3 lead before a timeout, and then Alma adjusted and took control of the game from there.

The boys are now 2-0 in 6A games and both have been on the road. They will play their third 6A game on the road against Siloam next Tuesday. If Alma could start of 3-0 on the road in 6A games and have all those games at home on the backstretch, they'd be in a great position.

Bryant @ Alma - Girls
Both teams seem to be in the bottom half of the conference. With Alma having an important game against Siloam Springs on Tuesday, this could be a big momentum boost if they are able to win. Bryant girls go to Conway on Tuesday, so perhaps a win here would be able to just move them up the standings.

Bryant @ Alma - Boys
I think this will be a good one. I know Bryant just lost to Russellville by double digits, but I've heard Bryant isn't playing at full strength. I'm not sure if that's true or if it will be true Friday night, but I expect this to be a good game. Airedales could use this as a big momentum boost going into the Tuesday showdown at Siloam and Bryant has a big game themselves on Tuesday against Conway.

Conway @ Siloam Springs - Girls
Not much to say other than Conway girls should win this by quite a bit.

Conway @ Siloam Springs - Boys
For a game that doesn't involve a team I root for and doesn't mean anything in terms of playoffs, I'm very interested in this game. If Siloam is able to give Conway a good game or even beat them, then we know Alma has quite the battle ahead of them on Tuesday. Conway's boys can't really prove much with a win here unfortunately.

Greenwood @ Russellville - Girls
See comments on "Conway @ Siloam Springs - Girls"

Greenwood @ Russellville - Boys
A big game here. Russellville has all the pressure on them. This will make it where all their 6A games are at home on the frontside of the conference schedule. If the Cyclones go 0-3 under those circumstances, they are in big trouble for the 2nd half of the conference season. Greenwood boys have pressure on them for sure, don't want to start off 0-3 no matter where you play, but perhaps a little less pressure on Greenwood. I think Russellville is the better team...they gave Alma and Siloam all they wanted and just beat Bryant by double digits.

Van Buren @ Mount St. Mary's - Girls
I think Van Buren girls have to be careful here. Can't take a team lightly when only 6 games matter for the playoffs. If Van Buren girls can win this, they could be well on their way to grab the central 2 seed. The Lady Pointers should win this. But COach Bryant isn't one to let his girls overlook a team.

Van Buren @ Little Rock Catholic - Boys
The Pointers are sort of in the same boat as their Lady counterparts. A game against an opponent who has nothing to lose on the road means you can't overlook them. Catholic has some size and can bang down low. They can give Mitchell Smith a tough game in my opinion. VB is the favorite, no doubt. I'm interested in how they will match up, though.

Alma-Bryant game was crazy. Wild finish...Not sure I have the energy or brainpower to do a write up tonight. I'll try

Basically, Alma was down as much as 9 in the 4th. They chipped away (and this game was very chippy) to cut it to 4 with about 2:30 to go. Alma traps and gets a steal and skips it ahead to Braylon Parker for a layup or at least a foul. Well, Bryant goes for the foul. But they go for the "flagrant" type foul. Braylon went head first into the padding of the goal. I was concerned. So was all of Alma.

Anyways, Braylon seems to be okay. Immediately after the flagrant, words are exchanged between an Alma player and a Bryant player. The Bryant player pushes the Alma player and then receives a technical on top of the flagrant. Alma will have 4 free throws and the ball.

Well, Alma only makes 2 of the 4 (common theme of the night). So now they are down 2 with the ball. Folkerts gets fouled in the paint...gets 2 free throws...makes one. Alma down one.

So Bryant has the ball and Alma has to foul. Bryant throws it to this player who looked scared to death to have the ball and Alma fouls him appropriately. He then misses the front end of the 1 and 1. Alma has a chance to take the lead with a 2. The 'Dales take a three and miss. Bryant ball...Alma plays tough defense and forces a turnover, Alma ball again with another chance.

So Alma has the ball with about 30 seconds left. Just passing it around the key. With about 12 seconds left, a sophomore by the name of Nathan Corder receives the ball. Nathan had been in the game sparingly. So of course, he just looks the basket dead in the eye (net) and shoots a 3 and swishes it. Alma up two. Then Bryant comes down and their knock down 3 point shooter has a good look for the win. He misses, though. Alma gets the rebound. Austin Lee makes two free throws to put Alma up 4 and then that's how the game ended.

Not pretty, but very entertaining.

An analysis of Tuesday's games in the Central

Alma @ Siloam Springs - Girls
This game will decide who goes into the backstretch of conference games behind the 8 ball. It's looking like one of these teams is going to be the 3 seed and the other one left out. These teams seem pretty even based on scores except Siloam played VB closer than Alma did. Also it's at Siloam, so Siloam has the advantage.

Alma @ Siloam Springs - Boys

While the girls will be playing to stay caught up with the rest of the teams, the boys will play to stay ahead of the rest of the teams. Alma has better non conference wins, but in conference, these teams seem pretty even other than the Greenwood game. Siloam's victory against Conway shows they are for real, though, and Alma better come to play Tuesday. This is a toss-up.

Bryant @ Conway - Girls
Conway girls should win this one pretty handily.

Bryant @ Conway - Boys
This is looking like a game that will put the winning team in a pretty good spot for the 2 seed and give them a shot at Van Buren for the 1 seed in the backstretch. Before Friday, I would have said Conway is a pretty decent favorite, but now I only think of them as a slight favorite. If Bryant's number 11 and 21 play and shoot well, they are tough to be reckoned with.

Greenwood @ Van Buren - Girls
Well, if Greenwood's girls are going to get any type of challenge other than Conway, this would be the game. I think VB will give them all they want for a bit, but Greenwood pulls away at the end.

Greenwood @ Van Buren - Boys
On paper, it's the undefeated conference team versus the winless conference team...and the winless conference team is on the road. I see this as a win by a wide margin by the Pointers on the court.

Russellville @ Mount St. Mary's - Girls
Russellville girls should win this one pretty easily...I don't think Mount St. Mary's is going to win a game.

Russellville @ LR Catholic - Boys
I'm interested in how this one shakes out even though it doesn't mean anything in terms of playoff standings. Alma and Van Buren both had some trouble against Catholic. Russellville started off the year slow but has really played a lot better as the conference season has gone along. If they go to Little Rock and handle Catholic easily, then I think the rest of the Central has another team to worry about.

I haven't heard.

Tonight was a good victory. Alma didn't play well for about 1.75 quarters. They were down 21-11 at one point in the 2nd.

Finally, Alma started to turn it on and was only down 25-20 at the end of the half. Something happened at the end of the half which made me feel good. Alma started pressing, and I realized what the coaches realized...Siloam doesn't really have a ball handler. Their point guard doesn't have a strong left handed dribble and everyone else is   a bit slow on the dribble. So Alma just started pressing them and Siloam turned it over or got in a hurry quite a few times.

2nd half started and Alma was playing well offensively, but #15 for Siloam started to just take over. Then Will Cluck for Alma gets fouled kind of late in the 3rd quarter...Alma down 39-36. He makes the first, and then misses the 2nd, but Austin Lee comes flying in, takes it outside the 3 point line and knocks it down to make it a 40-39 lead for Alma. He then knocks two more down and before you know it, the score is 48-42 Alma at the end of the 3rd.

Alma took over from there, although they did have a bit of a scare late in the game, but nothing came of it.

Siloam quit going to their big man in the 2nd half, which didn't make much sense to me. I guess Alma adjusted.

AT

Alma has Conway on Friday night.

The boys game could be interesting. I thought Conway would be playing better than they have, but I still expect a tough game for the 'Dales. No matter the results on Friday night, Alma has had a successful front end of conference season...going at least 5-2, maybe 6-1, and going 3-0 in 6A games (the ones that matter) all on the road.

Preview of Central action tomorrow night:

Conway @ Alma - Girls
:-\

Conway @ Alma - Boys
Conway is on a bit of a skid right now while Alma is on a winning streak. Alma will have Russellville next Friday (since next Tuesday is a built in make-up date), so I'm wondering if this is one of those games Alma gets caught asleep. I don't think they are overlooking Conway, but Alma has just had a stretch where they had to win a lot of meaningful road games and now have Russellville ahead and this Conway game is sandwiched in between. Conway is looking for any game to raise some confidence and a top 10 Alma squad is just the trick.

I think Alma will get a very good shot from Conway, and I'm hoping the Airedales can take it and give their best shot back. This team keeps surprising me in finding ways to win.

Siloam Springs @ Bryant - Girls
This really should be a competitive game and should serve as a confidence boost into the 2nd half of the conference season. I say Siloam gets the road victory.

Siloam Springs @ Bryant - Boys
Pretty much the same could be put here as I said for the girls' game, but I think Bryant gets the victory. I would be interested in seeing this game. Should be pretty competitive. Two very contrasting styles. Bryant's press will give Siloam's fits, but if Siloam can slow the game down and work it inside, they could give the Hornets fits.

Mount St. Mary's @ Greenwood - Girls
Greenwood wins this one.

LR Catholic @ Greenwood - Boys
I think this is Greenwood's best chance at a conference win. Catholic is a physical, better than their record says team. I think Catholic wins still. Should be competitive.

Van Buren @ Russellville - Girls
I think Van Buren girls win by 10 or so.

Van Buren @ Russellville - Boys
I was surprised to see Russellville lose against Catholic. I thought the Cyclones were on the up and up, but perhaps they just didn't get up for the game since it was meaningless. Of course, this one doesn't mean anything in terms of the playoff race, but it's a home game and it's against a top 10 team in the state in Van Buren. I would be interested in seeing this game because I think Russellville will prove to be Alma's toughest 6A Challenge in the backstretch and I want to see how they do against VB.

Preview of tomorrow night's games

Russellville @ Alma - Girls
If Alma's girls are going to make a run at the tournament, this is the time to do it. If they can beat Russellville at home and Siloam Springs at home, they are in. They have to look at this as the start of a new season. Alma only lost by 7 at Russellville. It will be a close game in my opinion.

Russellville @ Alma - Boys
Since the return of #33, Russellville has played much better basketball, or at least it looks that way on paper. Alma played Russellville when they didn't have #33, and only won by 1 in OT. That's the bad news. The good news is that it seems Russellville is a completely different animal at home than they are on the road, so the Airedales need to come out hot and the crowd needs to get into the game. This will be close. An Alma win would clinch a playoff spot.

Greenwood @ Bryant - Girls
Greenwood girls haven't played great as of late, but I think they win this one by 15 or so.

Greenwood @ Bryant - Boys
Bryant's boys have seem to be getting better as the year has gone along. I think the Hornets win by about the same amount as the Lady Bulldogs do, 15. Maybe 20. Greenwood plays tough for an 0-7 team in conference.

Van Buren @ Conway - Girls
Coach Bryant has VB's girls playing over their head, but Conway's girls are just insanely good. I think Conway wins by quite a bit even though VB has improved a lot since their last matchup.

Van Buren @ Conway - Boys
Van Buren had a bit of a slip up against Russellville. Not sure if the Pointers just didn't get up for that game or if Russellville boys are just that good now, but VB has no excuse this game. If the Pointer boys want the 1 seed and a bye in the first round at state, winning this one will go a long way towards that. Conway had a heartbreaking loss against Alma last week. They are solid and will be at home. I think it's a close one, but the Pointers pull away late.

Mount St. Mary's @ Siloam Springs - Girls
I say Siloam Springs' girls win by double digits.

LR Catholic @ Siloam Springs - Boys
Catholic is playing tough basketball even with an unimpressive record. They beat Russellville with their good player and have played a lot of the top teams tough. Siloam did lose the first time around @ Catholic, so this should be a very interesting game even without any playoff implications. I say Catholic wins again.

Boys

Alma - 44
Russellville - 46

Great game in CBD Arena in Alma tonight. Alma and Russellville went back and forth all night. Alex Beneux for Alma contained #33 for Russellville most of the night (I think he ended up with 12). He played great defense on him. The difference in the game was Russellville's big man #30. He made the game winning shot with 8 seconds left.

The Airedales played good team defense, just didn't make the plays tonight. Hopefully the bounce back for Van Buren on Tuesday.

AB™

Alma let one slip away tonight.  Had about a 5 point lead with 3-4 minutes to go in the game.  They had some rushed possessions and turnovers down the stretch that did them in, but it happens.  They don't have anything to hang their head about.  They played hard and just came up short in the end.  They still control their destiny in the conference

Yes I cleared a few post off this thread in case you're missing them. Call me a Mod-Nazi if you wish, but the subject matter could only go down hill and I don't want to have to shut the thread down.

Those threads are the best kind!

If you guys (mods) haven't noticed, the apathy factor for the basketball side of this site is trending upward! (less and less traffic- more IDGAS about basketball on here)

The term- cutting off your nose to spite your own face comes to mind.

OK- now you guys can go back to your sterile, whitewashed, we love Alma thread. Carry On. ::)
