My thoughts on the Arkansas Invitational:

This is just a meet for some people to knock some rust off and for some freshmen or members who don't get to run at the big meets to get their feet wet.

For the women, the most impressive events were the mile, pole vault, and long jump. Hiltz's and Haiss's mile run was very impressive and puts them top 5 in the country right now. They will probably have to run faster to stay there, but it shows they are in really good shape early.

The pole vault was pretty dang good! First off, it's nice to see Freier back on the team. We need her. Strangely enough, Lexi didn't vault as high as her sister, but still vaulted for the 4th best vault in the country. Tori and Desiree had great vaults. Lexi's is good relative to the nation, but for her not her best. I don't think this is a fault of anyone. I think she had a long track season that didn't end until August and the coaches are easing her back into competition.

Taliyah's long jump is great and it would be nice to have her at nationals in the pentathlon and long jump if possible.

For the men, the most impressive events were the 60 meter dash, 200 meter dash, and triple jump. Cotton's 60 meter time won't stay in the top 16 as it is, but I think he will round into great form and qualify for nationals. Ejiakuekwu has the potential to be a national qualifier.

Igbokwe in the 200 ran a GREAT time. His time right now is impressive but the 200 meter dash has already had some good times so he may have to run faster to stay in the top 16. Great to see him in that shape this early.

The performance of the meet was Clive Pullen's triple jump. He was just going out for form and technique practice and lands a HUGE personal best and is easily the number one jump in the country. He could not triple jump until nationals and he would still easily qualify. (He obviously will jump more).

RATTLER43

Agreed.  Had Clive hit at nationals last year I think we win men's to match the women.  He had a horrible set of jumps.  Glad for him to hit big early.

My thoughts on the Vanderbilt Invitational:

First off, it's always good to go run, throw, jump on the track that will hold SECs. Indoor tracks are weird in that not all of them are the same standard size or shape. Vanderbilt's is 300 meters one lap around, unlike Arkansas's 200 meter track. Great for the Razorbacks to go and run on it before SECs.

There were more Razorback competitors this weekend, although I don't think we have still brought out our whole team.

Some of the more impressive performances on the women's side: Daina Harper in the 400 meter dash, Damajahnee Birch in the 800 meter run, Taylor Werner in the 3000 meter run, both the 1600 relay and distance medley relay, and Victoria Weeks in pole vault.

Daina's 400 run was great on a track that is not as fast as her home track. Her time right now makes her 4th in the country and I think a few 400 runs on the Arkansas track will bump that time down. Birch is a 400 meter hurdler outdoors but she ran the first 800 meter in her life and she ran a GREAT time. I can't see this just being training at this point, she has to be an 800 meter runner at least indoors. She could score at nationals. Werner, the freshmen, killed it in her first 3K action. That time is very good, although she may have to run faster to make it to nationals. Both the relay teams showed they are in good shape early and are ready to run faster times to qualify for nationals. Victoria Weeks in the pole vault, went .01 cm above her personal best and now has the number one vault in the country.

On the men's side, Obi Igbokwe and Eric Janise ran great 400s. Can't wait to see what they do on the Arkansas track. Jack Bruce and Andrew Ronoh turned in some great 1 Mile times. I'm hoping Bruce is able to dip under 4 minutes and qualify for nationals in that. The 4 x 400 meter relay ran an excellent time for this early in the season and Erich Sullins, although not just EXCELLENT relative to the nation, broke a 12 year old weight throw record.

RATTLER43

Arkansas' distance medley relay was disqualified for an illegal handoff after the team of Obi Igbokwe, Brandon Singleton, Carlton Orange and Jack Bruce crossed the finish line in first. Oklahoma State was ruled the winner in 9:33.93.

"They said one of our guys had his foot was on the back of the exchange zone," Bucknam said. "It's disappointing."

That one hurts. They'll have other chances, though, but they have to capitalize on them so more pressure.

So the Razorback Invitational ended and the men won the team scoring and the women finished 3rd. Instead of just talking about specifically the meet, I'd like to talk about each team in general so far this season:

Women -

Sprints
I don't see us having anyone qualify for nationals in the 60 or 200. Kiara could possibly do it in the 60 if she shaves a few tenths of a second off her time, but that's hard to do. I do think Kiara could be an SEC scorer, though. I don't think Jada is going to be a scorer this year.

In the 400, Daina Harper will have to be our scorer this year. This event has become a staple for the Razorback women program and Daina looks to carry the torch this year at nationals. She ran a great time at Vandy and hopefully she can replicate that again or improve upon it later in the season. I do think we will see her at nationals in it.

Distance
In the 800, we have some great young talent who is ALMOST there, but they will need a breakthrough to make it to nationals. Birch, who is a 400 meter hurdler outdoors, ran her first 800 this year and ran a GREAT time. She'll have to run faster to make it to nationals. It's tough to tell if that first 800 is going to be an outlier or a sign of things to come for Birch.

Watson and Byrnes are making improvement through the year, but will need to make improvement at a faster pace to make it to nationals. I think all 3 of those could be SEC scorers in the 800.

In the 1 mile, I think we definitely have two potential national qualifiers in Hiltz and Haiss. It'd be nice if they both could find a way to score at nationals. We have some other young mile talent, like Maddy Reed, who could score at SECs perhaps, but nationals is out of reach.

The 3K and 5K are always tough to tell. Long distance events are usually ran very few times in regular season. They are ran perhaps once or twice for a time trial and if your time trials are good enough to get you to nationals, you just need to be good that day to score. Taylor Werner, a super frosh I believe, ran a great time already in the 3K. But the big distance time trial meet, the Washington Invitational, hasn't happened yet, so it's hard to tell if that time will get her to nationals. Regan Ward would technically get to nationals in the 3K right now, but the season doesn't end right now and that time will have to be improved upon to actually make it. Those are both SEC scorers, though.

No one has ran the 5K yet, but that will change. We'll see how it goes.

Hurdles
The only hurdling in indoors is the 60 meter hurdles. We don't have a specialized hurdler other than our pentathletes and with Payton Stumbaugh missing in action so far (I'll get to that later) and Taliyah not running her usual hurdle times, I'm not sure we'll have a national qualifier in that or even an SEC scorer.

Relays
In the 4 x 4, our women are looking pretty good, lowering their time every time out. I think they will be national scorers. The DMR team looks solid too, but DMRs are so unpredictable at nationals. You just have to make it and run your best and hope for the best at nationals.

Vertical Jumps
Don't really have a high jumper other than Kelsey Herman, the pentathlete. I'm not sure if she'll focus on the high jump individually at SECs or not. She has the potential to score in it.

In the pole vault, as usual, great things have happened. Tori Weeks, not Lexi mind you, is leading the nation in the pole vault by a full tenth of a meter. The person she is ahead of? Lexi. And the good thing is that the Arkansas field events coach came out today and said Lexi is easing her way back in and she is doing pretty dang good for "easing her way back in" 2nd in the nation and all behind her twin sister. Desiree Freier also has the potential to be a national scorer, but she's a little volatile with her vaults, as pole vault tends to be.

Horizontal Jumps
We just don't have them. Most teams have a weakness and the Arkansas women have one in these and the throws. That is okay and honestly we aren't hopeless in it. Taliyah did score at outdoor nationals last year in the long jump and has the 5th best long jump in the country still. She will probably go to nationals in it and you just have to hope she can do what she did last year...compete in the multis and then score in the long jump after that grueling event.

Throws
We don't recruit this in women's track, so not much to talk about.

Multi-Events
So this is a tough thing to be able to tell right now:

First off, the glaring thing is that Payton Stumbaugh is missing in action. She is still on the roster, so I assume it's a medical redshirt or she is going to start competing later in the season. It's a big miss because she is potential national scorer in the multi event and hurdling.

Secondly, Taliyah didn't compete in the multis at this past meet. I'm not sure why. She is also a potential national scorer, so I hope she's okay.

That being said, with our two best multi eventers out, Kelsey Herman and Leigha Brown went out and KILLED it. They have the 2nd and 3rd best scores in the country right now! Great job girls.

I'll talk about the men in another post.

AT

Men

Sprints
In the 60 meter dash, Kenzo Cotton and Roy Ejiakuekwu could be national qualifiers and could even more likely be SEC scorers. Kenzo is rounding into form, but still needs to break through with a good time in the 60 to make it to nationals. Same thing for Roy. I don't think he has shown the same evidence that he can score at nationals, so we will just have to wait to see if he can break through and make it there. Josh Washington also has potential, but I don't know if he's a 60 meter sprinter. He could possibly score at SECs.

In the 200, we are deep this year. I don't remember having 3 guys under 21 indoors in a long time. Washington has the 5th best time in the country. He's an unproven and has improved quite a bit since last year indoors, so we will wait to see how he does at SECs and hopefully nationals. Much like in the 60 meter dash, Cotton needs to have a race that improves on his existing time right now to make nationals, but he has shown he can do that before. He should be an SEC scorer and hopefully a national scorer. Obi Igbokwe could possible qualify for nationals in the 200, but I think he'll focus on the 400. Ejiakuekwu would need a big breakthrough to qualify, but I've seen weirder. Roy could be an SEC scorer, though. Mowatt and Anderson are just hurdlers running it for training.

In the 400, we have two athletes who I think could be national qualifiers in Obi Igbokwe and Eric Janise. Igbokwe seems the most likely to make nationals. He currently has the 5th fastest time in the country. Janise, with the 12th fastest time, will probably need to run faster to make it, but it's possible. They could both very well score at SECs. Jamarco Stephen has improved but needs a breakthrough race to be even an SEC scorer. Orange was just training for his 800 when he ran it. Chambers and Donald are probably not going to score at SECs.

Distance
We've only had one guy run the 800 all year and that is Carlton Orange, a really good one. He has the 6th fastest time in the country and I think he'll make nationals in the event. We have other guys who can be SEC scorers in the event and I'm sure we will put a few of them in there to see if they can.

It seems forever since we've had a miler who could score at nationals, but perhaps Jack Bruce will change that. He has the 11th fastest time in the nation and he will probably need to run faster to qualify for nationals, but I think he can do it. Ronoh was just training for 3K and 5K with his run I think. Ronoh might run it at SECs. Moehn could possibly be an SEC scorer, but he'll need a big breakthrough race to make it to nationals.

In the 3K, we've had 3 guys run who showed they could all score at SECs, but they need to run quite a bit faster to be national qualifiers and it definitely would help a ton if one of them could make it. Ronoh, Levermore, and Tonui need a good time trial sometime during the year.

If you want to see why we haven't had a 5K runner yet, look above where I wrote about it for the women. Nothing to worry about yet.

Hurdles
Davon Anderson has the ability to qualify for nationals in the 60 hurdles. I think he'll have to run faster than he currently has, but he can do it. Donald and Mowatt are more 400 hurdler types just running the 60 indoors for training purposes.

Relays
I think our 4 x 4 team should make it to nationals and probably even score. I think they will improve on their current time. The DMR being disqualified hurt, but I think they will run a good time at a meet. They have the parts for it, just need to put it together and qualify for nationals where anything can happen in that race.

Vertical Jumps
LeGassey is not in the form he has been his first three years. I'm not sure what's going on, but it would be great if he can round back into his form. He's a national qualifier type, but needs to improve on his jump to make it. Rivera is just hoping to score at SECs.

We don't seem to have any pole vaulters this year.

Horizontal Jumps
Trajkovski's jump is a good sign that he could make it to nationals, but he'll have to jump further. White will have to hit a big jump to make it. I don't see Jacobus coming from his multi events to do a long jump. Workman will have to hope for SECs scoring.

In the triple jump, Pullen is in for nationals, we just need him to score this time. Rubin Owens just needs to hit a big jump to make it...I hope he can. I think he has the potential.

Throws
In the shot put, Jeff Rogers will have a tough time scoring at SECs, much less making nationals. Same for Erich Sullins in the weight throw, but these are events we are trying to build up for the future.

Multi Events
We had some strong performances last meet in the heptathlon. Jacobus and Moore had some great marks for the first multi event of the season and if they improve upon those at SECs, they will probably make nationals. Culp and Austell also had good showings, but they need some breakthroughs in some of their events to make it to nationals

This weekend, the Razorbacks host the Tyson Invitational. It is one of the biggest indoor meets of the year and is not a scoring meet, rather a time to start trying to get some qualifying times, especially in the sprints, before championship season.

Some distance crew will go to Iowa State and Washington to try and get NCAA qualifying times.

My thoughts going into the qualifier meets next weekend before championship season:

Women -

I think they will run Kiara in the short sprints, especially the 60, and try to see if they can get her squeezed into nationals, but that will be tough. Kiara is definitely showing herself to be a threat to score at SECs, which is good to see. I don't think Jada will be a scorer this year, but she certainly has had a nice freshman campaign indoors.

Daina Harper ran a new personal best at Tyson to perhaps cement her spot at nationals in the 400. In a weird twist, Damajahnee Birch ran a great 400 to put her in position to qualify for nationals. I thought she might be focusing on the 800, but her 400 was so good, it makes me wonder what Coach Harter will decide to do with her the rest of indoors. I don't think Swinton will be a scorer at SECs or NCAAs, but hopefully she rounds back into form to make our 4 x 4 as good as possible.

As I mentioned in the last paragraph, Birch's 400 makes me wonder about her 800 future. On the other hand, Byrnes has PRd every time she's ran the 800 this year. She's done a great job improving each time and I think can be an SEC scorer. She'll need a big breakthrough to qualify for NCAAs. Ceara Watson has the ability to score at least at SECs, I'm just waiting for her breakthrough race.

Nikki ran great at the Washington meet to perhaps cement her NCAA qualifier for the mile. Therese is on the cusp of qualifying, but I think she needs to run a faster time to cement her place at NCAAs. I think they should both easily score at SECs.

In the 3K, Taylor Werner has ran GREAT as a super frosh. She's in position to qualify for NCAAs in the 3K which I mentioned earlier in the year we needed badly. I don't think we will have any other NCAA qualifiers in the event, but Ward, Hiltz, and Haiss could all score at SECs in the 3K.

As I've mentioned before, the 5K is always a big wildcard indoors. Gray and Ward ran good times, but not NCAA qualifying times. They could definitely score at SECs, though. It will be interesting to see if Werner runs the 5K indoors.

Taliyah and Kelsey ran good 60 hurdle times. Taliyah looks to be shaping up for championship season, but if she wants to qualify for the NCAAs 60 hurdles, she'll have to run faster than she has.

Our 4 x 400 team has really worked hard to be where they are. I honestly did worry about this being the year the 4 x 4 for Arkansas women would fall off a bit, and they aren't where they were last year, but they are going to probably make it to nationals and could very well score.

The DMR may need to run a faster time to qualify for nationals, but I think we have the pieces to do it, just need a good race.

High jump with Kelsey, Leigha, and Taliyah probably won't be focused on individually. They are all just working on it for their multis. I do wonder if one of them, probably Kelsey, will try to do it individually at SECs.

Pole Vault is great as usual, and was even greater this weekend. Tori has been the best vaulter indoors this season and Lexi seems to be rounding into form a little more each weekend. Desiree had a big breakthrough at Tyson with a personal best mark. If she can consistently do that, we could have 3 scorers at NCAAs in the pole vault.

Long jump is interesting because Taliyah, usually a multi girl, is probably going to qualify for nationals in the individual long jump. That was the key difference in us beating Oregon last year for a national championship, Taliyah in the long jump. I assume we will jump her at nationals this year also. If Kelsey could get a big jump, maybe we could get her there, too.

In the pentathlon, I knew Leigha and Kelsey put up great scores, but I didn't expect them to hold us this well over the past two weeks! With them still having the 2nd and 4th best scores this late in the year, I think we will see both of them at nationals. I assume Taliyah will do her multi at SECs and hopefully she puts up a good enough score so we can have 3 girls in that event also at nationals.

Men -

Cotton looks like he could very well qualify for nationals in the 60 dash. I'm hoping he gets a faster time to solidify that spot, though. Ejiakuekwu needs a bit of a breakthrough race to get in, but it certainly isn't impossible. Cotton should be an SEC scorer and Ejiakuekwu probably will be.

In the 200, I think Washington's time will get him into NCAAs. Cotton needs to run faster to get in for sure and I think he can. We are also very deep in the 200 with Igbokwe, Harris, Ejiakuekwu, and Mowatt running some great times this year. Igbokwe could maybe make nationals in the 200, but I'm sure the coaches are going to have him focus on his 400. Harris had a great first 200 race, but needs a big race to make it to nationals. Ejiakuekwu pulled up at Tyson and I hope it's not too big of an injury. Mowatt probably won't be an SEC scorer, but it's nice to see that the 4th guy on our 4 x 4 is in such good shape.

In the 400, Igbokwe and Janise very well may have punched their tickets to NCAAs after their Tyson performance. They could both score at SECs very easily. Jamarco needs to drop a few tenths of a seconds to make it to NCAAs, but it's possible. Mowatt, as I said earlier, isn't a scorer but a great fourth leg, and Schwartz and Winn have added some nice depth just in case of an injury.

In the 800, it looks like we are going all in on Carlton Orange, which isn't a bad person to go all in with. Orange may need to run faster to make it to NCAAs. Maybe not, tough to tell. He should score at SECs.

In the Mile, Bruce ran a nice time, but the mile has gotten so tough recently that he will have to improve upon that time to make it to NCAAs. I think he'll be an SEC scorer. I don't see Ronoh making it to NCAAs in the mile. I'm not sure if he didn't just run it for training purposes.

In the 3K, Bruce ran a great time, just the depth of distance running has become so good that his time probably won't be good enough to get him to NCAAs, unless he improves upon it. Ronoh should be an SEC scorer.

In the 5K, Ronoh looks to be an SEC scorer, but will have a tough time making NCAAs.

In the 60 meter hurdles, Davon Anderson hasn't ran much. I'm not sure if it's an injury or what, but with his limited running he is still on the cusp of qualifying for nationals. I hope he comes back healthy for SECs and cements his spot for nationals. Donald had a big breakthrough race in the hurdles at Tyson. If he keeps improving, not only could he score at SECs, but also nationals. I'm not sure Mowatt is really focusing on the hurdles indoors, but rather his sprinting and endurance.

Our men ran GREAT at Tyson in the 4 x 4. They are going to be at NCAAs and should score. I don't know if they can beat A&M, but our men are looking good still.

In High Jump, LeGassey looked like his old self at Tyson and looks to improve upon that jump to make it to NCAAs. I think he is peaking at the right time and will score at SECs and maybe qualify for NCAAs.

In the long jump, Trajkovski had a big leap to help make his NCAA status more solid. Travonn White leapt out to give himself a chance at nationals. He will probably have to improve upon it, but if the season ended today, he'd be in. Jacobus has a nice jump for a multi eventer, but he's not going to do it individually. Workman has had some nice PRs this indoor season. Nice to see him sticking with it. Would be awesome to see him have a big jump and score at SECs.

In triple, Clive is showing to be our best athlete on the team with not only the NCAA #1 jump, but a world leader. He was already qualified for nationals for all intents and purposes, but now looks to be the clear favorite to win. Owens needs a big jump to get there. He could score at SECs still, though.

Sullins won't make NCAAs without a HUGE throw, but perhaps he can sneak into scoring in the weight throw at SECs for some points.

Jacobus, Moore, Culp, and Austell all will rely on their SEC heptathlon performance to decide whether or not they will make it to NCAAs. If they improve upon their scores right now, they will have a shot. If they don't improve upon their scores, it will be tough to make it. They are all potential SEC scorers.
