This is how college track and field works in the post season:

After the conference meets are finished, all the performances throughout the year in all 21 events are put in descending order lists. If you are in the top 48, you qualify for one of two regionals (West or East regional). The West regional is basically all teams west of the Mississippi River. And the East is all the teams east of the Mississippi River.

So if you are top 48 in your event in your region, you are guaranteed a spot at regional. Just because you have a top 48 performance doesn't mean you have to go to regionals in that event. Perhaps you are an 800 runner who just ran a 400 in the middle of the year for training and you have a top 48 400 team. You can scratch and the 49th best performance will be in the top 48 now and so on.

So 48 athletes go to all 21 events in two different regions. That means, for example, in the high jump there are 48 athletes in the West and 48 athletes in the East competing.

Arkansas is in the West regional. The regional meet is used to qualify athletes for the National Championships. To qualify for the national championship, you must finish top 12 in your region in your event. So 12 from each region will go the nationals, which makes a total of 24 in each of the 21 events.

The only event this is not true for is the decathlon/heptathlon, where the NCAA just takes the top 24 descending decathletes/heptathletes to nationals without making them compete at regionals.

AT

What happened to Ronoh in 10,000?  I had big expectations.

What happened to Ronoh in 10,000?  I had big expectations.

No clue, Rattler. I was hoping he'd score for us in the 10K myself. Maybe Gabe can take care of some of his points.

The women had a good meet. No one missed out really.

The men had a few misses. Strangely in the 800 we qualified Ryan Thomas, who I didn't think had much of a chance to make it, and our stud freshman Carlton Orange didn't make it.

In the 1500, we had 4 guys running and none of them qualified. I thought at least one would.

In the 5K neither of our guys made it.

In the 3K steeple, Cale Wallace ran his worst time of the season and didn't make it, but Tonui did just barely.

In the 10K, obviously Ronoh is a big miss.

Our sprinters did very well and our jumpers did what they needed. I see at best a top 5 finish if the jumpers and sprinters do what they need to. If the sprinters perform way above expectations, we could maybe have a higher finish.

Now the women on the other hand...well I'll just let the projected points do the talking and cross my fingers. They have a very favorable projection though. I don't see them scoring that many points. So they just need people to perform reasonably well.

So they just need people to perform reasonably well.
agree with all.    I still think The Duck women will make some noise.  Our gals need to put them away.  Hogs, Ducks, Gators, and Aggies all have great programs.  Titles can provide that edge in recruiting. WPS!

And today, ladies and gents, the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships start in Eugene, Oregon.

Last year the NCAA decided to change the schedule of the championships. Over a 4 day period, the men would have 2 days to themselves (Wednesday and Friday) and the women would have two days to themselves (Thursday and Saturday). The only time this didn't apply was to the multi events (Decathlon and Heptathlon). This was a success and met with much approval so we have the same format this year. Today is the men's first day. Here is the Razorbacks' schedule for today:

2:30 PM - Brad Culp and Derek Jacobus compete in the 100 meter dash of the Decathlon.

3:10 PM - Brad Culp and Derek Jacobus compete in the Long Jump of the Decathlon.

4:25 PM - Brad Culp and Derek Jacobus compete in the Shot Put of the Decathlon.

5:40 PM - Brad Culp and Derek Jacobus compete in the High Jump of the Decathlon.

6:32 PM - Arkansas's 4 x 100 meter men's relay team competes in the semi-finals.

7:02 PM - Frankline Tonui competes in the 3000 meter steeple chase semi-finals.

7:46 PM - Marqueze Washington, Jarrion Lawson, and Kenzo Cotton compete in the 100 meter dash semi-finals.

8:00 PM - Obi Igbokwe competes in the 400 meter dash semi-finals.

8:00 PM - Jarrion Lawson, Kurt Jenner, and Andreas Trajkovski compete in the Long Jump.

8:14 PM - Ryan Thomas competes in the 800 meter run semi-finals.

8:30 PM - Larry Donald competes in the 400 meter hurdles semi-finals.
