Yeah, Hector was notorious for "getting the calls" during that time frame. Not to take away from their teams in the late 90's because they were very good. But we had some mysterious calls that cancelled big plays when we played there. It seems like when I was in junior high i went to a Sr high game at Hector as a water boy  and the police either had to escort out the refs or maybe they escorted out some of the fans because of the refs, either way, yeah it was always crazy when we went to Hector.

Most fans from Hector would tell you that Charleston is a bunch of sore losers(not trying to provoke a fight here), because most remember you guys turning the lights out so shortly after the game that the team was still on the field...at least that's the story in Hector...now I agree that most people not from Hector say that Nance did indeed miss the field goal that won that game in 99 at our place.

If you'll read my previous post, you'll see i'm from Mansfield so I'm not sure what you mean when you say "you guys", but if Charleston turned the lights out on Hector (I'm assuming in '98?) then that's a new one on me, I hadn't heard that before. It's kinda funny and I could see that happening. Charleston doesn't get beat at home much so I could see that being true. I have the advantage of being the third party on this one so its interesting to get both points of view. Are you from Hector? So did Nance miss the field goal or not, it's 10 years later, its time for the truth to come out! lol! I played against both Hector and Charleston in 98 and 99, I think Hector was the better team both years.

2003 was a strange season. The Tigers started out as the consensus No 1 ranked team in AA They started out the regular season looking great but ended it with some questions. The close wins near the end of the season against Elkins and Pea Ridge had everyone wondering if they were worthy. The magazine we can not name and the AP keep the Tigers at No 1 until they lost in the semi's to Barton. Mike Bond –  founder and owner of Fearless Friday at that time – dropped them near the end of the season and ranked Junction City as No 1. Junction City had one of the best teams to ever come out of A/AA football and proved Bond correct when they demolished Barton in the championship game.

The Tigers had some very good talent returning from the 2002 team but would need a quarterback and Soph Matt Stewart won the job. There were some good sophs along with Matt that would get playing time and one of those sophs was kicker Eduardo "Eddie" Carmona and another was Daniel Meador the second of three Meador brothers to play for the Tigers.

The Tigers had an open date for week five and when Decatur canceled their season it left us needing two home games. We were not successful in finding home games and finally ended up going to Gurdon and Stamps – Stamps had merged with Lewisville after the 2002 season and changed their name to Lafayette County. The Tigers looked good at Gurdon but much less impressive at Lafayette County. The Lafayette County game was played on Saturday and Coach Carpenter and some of the Junction City kids were at the game. I was told – I didn't see it – that Coach Carpenter left before the games end and was licking his chops.

In the playoff game with Barton, the Tigers drove into the red zone twice early but had to settle for two field goals and had an early 6-0 lead. It was short lived however as Barton scored to take the lead and never looked back. Barton dominated the game.

Josiah Moore (OT/DT) was selected to play in the All-Star game.

After back-to-back 12-1 seasons and with a lot of experience coming back 2004 looked to be as good or perhaps better.

Coach Story resigned after the 2003 season to become the High School Principal with a record of 117-28-1 and that ain't too shabby....Ex-Tiger Stephen Wood was hired as head coach and the Tigers really lucked out when ex-Tiger Doug Loughridge decided he wanted to return home and left Russellville to become the Tiger defensive coordinator. This was probably the best defense in Tiger history as they pitched 11 shutouts – 4 in the playoffs. Only three teams scored on the Tigers. Lavaca scored 35 in a Tiger win, Greenland 12 in a Tiger win, and Rison 30 in the championship game that the Tigers lost.

After an opening game tie with Ozark – a game the Tigers could have and should have won – they got a real scare at Lavaca in week four. The Tigers jumped out to a big lead but Lavaca came back and actually took the lead late in the game. The Tigers then drove almost the length of the field where Eddie kicked a 40 yard plus field goal to win the game. That kick had to be a very satisfying for Eddie because in the Ozark game he had missed one of about the same distance at the close of the first half and another that was a mere chip shot and not much more than a PAT with seconds left in the game.

I was so sure the Tigers were going to finally get that state championship I had already arranged for a state championship party. I had talked to two different [so-called] experts that had seen both teams play and both assured me the Tigers would have no trouble. One even went so far as to say Rison would have no answer for the Tigers firepower and it wouldn't even be close – never trust a so-called expert! Well it wasn't close as Rison dominated the second half and won going away. Once again that coveted state title had escaped the Tigers and I was seriously thinking it was just not meant to be and it would never happen.

Drew Hill surpassed Heath Kleck for 2nd place as the all time Tiger rushing leader but came up 27 yards short of Travis Prescott for the all time record.

I have no information on who was selected to play in the All-Star game after 2003.

FINALLY!!!!!FINALLY!!!!!FINALLY!!!!!FINALLY!!!!!

Going into the 2005 season there was never a question about the defense. The Tigers were returning a good nucleus of defensive experience and talent from the previous year's excellent defensive unit. The offense was another matter. Most of the firepower had graduated and it would have to be rebuilt. The one thing the offense had going for it was that three year starter Matt Stewart would be at the quarterback position. Most – myself included – thought there were too many questions on offense for this team to be able to compete for a title and this team didn't have the raw offensive talent of some of the previous teams. What we didn't take into account was the heart and determination of this group of kids even after a huge disappointment.

The loss to Lavaca came after it appeared the Tigers had the game in hand. With the Tigers leading 7-3 and with the ball they were in the process of running out the clock and needed one first down to complete the process. Matt Stewart ran a keeper off right tackle and had the first down but the helmet of the tackler hit the ball just right (or wrong in our case) and it popped out and Lavaca covered. Matt was a furious competitor and I can still see him on his knees pounding the turf with his fist after the fumble.... Ok, no problem.... The ball is still about 40 yards from the goal and all the defense has to do is hold them two or three plays and the games over. I can't remember for sure but it may have been the first play after the fumble that the Lavaca kid broke it and scored. It was the first conference loss since the opening game of the 1999 season (48 games).

After a disappointing loss like that it would be easy for a team to get down but to this teams credit they used that loss to make themselves better and become even more determined to achieve the goal that lay ahead.

The defense played so well in the Championship game that in my opinion the outcome was never in doubt. Coach Bennett of Dierks realized very quickly that trying to run on the Tiger defense was useless and went strictly too a passing game. The Dierks quarterback was the best passing quarterback I saw all year and he had some good receivers so he did have some success. The defense put a tremendous amount of pressure on him and had numerous sacks. Too the kid's credit he completed several passes under a huge amount of pressure. He was kind of like my old Timex watch—he took a licking but keep on ticking. Eddie kept them backed up all day with his high booming punts. A receiver that usually caught everything he could touch dropped two touchdown passes in the endzone. Eddie salvaged both to an extent by successfully booting field goals.

If there was the slightest doubt in my mind it was quickly erased when Matt broke a long run for a touchdown in the 3rd quarter. Matt probably should not even been playing in this game. He had sustained a severe deep thigh bruise early in the playoffs and had just been gutting it out. It was questionable all week whether Matt would play to everyone except Matt. Most would have been on crutches but Matt was determined to play and received medical treatment all week. I did not see his leg but one who did told me that they had never seen anything like it. They said it was swollen and purple and yellow and would almost make you sick to your stomach.

Late in the game Dierks was driving and had gotten into Tiger territory. It would have taken a miracle for them to win the game but it had happened in the Lavaca game earlier in the season so I'm sure some of the faithful were somewhat worried. When the Tigers made an interception—I think it was Rustin Bates but can't for sure be certain—the celebration begun.

I won't go into the feelings I had as I sat there in War Memorial Stadium and realized the Tigers had just won that state title that had eluded them for so long. As I was returning to Charleston I thought, what a difference a year makes. Last year this was such a long hard drive and this year it's so easy.

I remember sitting in the stands with the likes of Bryan Hewitt(89-91), Rob May(91-93), Jeff Dillard(86-88), Jeff Stubblefield (75-77) and other Tiger faithful who were rooting on Charleston. I can remember seeing Doug and Steve, thinking, they should have had a ring as a player and now as a coach. Even though I was an opposing coach during the regular season, I was pulling for Charleston after we(Cedarville) were eliminated in round 1. I remember the following Monday placing a phone call to the Charleston Field House congratulating the Tigers. Probably one of the best well rounded teams to ever step on Alumni Field.

2006 saw two classifications added to Arkansas football. The Tigers were moved up to AAA and the competition was going to get tougher. The Tigers would need a quarterback to replace three year starter Matt Stewart and they had one in senior Colt Rainwater who had been playing wingback and D-back just waiting for his chance. With several talented backs and receivers retuning that part of the team looked solid. It was the line that had the faithful worried because they would be young and for the most part inexperienced.

The 2006 team had the worse record during the 2000 decade but 9-3 ain't too shabby, especially when we look at the three loses. The first loss was to Jessieville who went on to win the AA State Championship. For the 2nd straight year they lost to Lavaca in the closing seconds after it appeared the game was well in hand, and then in the playoffs to Bauxite who was the 2nd best team in AAA behind Shiloh.

There was a group of talented sophs on this team that were destined to make a name for themselves later.

The faithful was excited for the prospects of a very good 2007 season. There was a good group of returning starters coming back from a good 2006 team. Among those returning was arguably the best two linebackers in Tiger history in Erick Stewart and Jordan Ackers. Stewart had been selected to the all-state team in 2006 as a soph. They would have to replace Colt Rainwater who was the heart and soul of the 2006 team at quarterback and again they had one in senior Jonathan Tedford who had been playing defensive end and other positions waiting his turn at quarterback. With Andy McDonald and Seth Christenberry retuning in the backfield and Evan Potts at wide receiver the skilled positions looked good. There was experience on the line on both sides of the ball.

The Tigers breezed through the regular season and really only tested once—their annual homecoming slow start—against Pottsville but pulled away late. The Tigers had one glaring weakness and during the playoffs Mountainburg had some success exploiting that weakness. Glen Rose had much more success exploiting that same weakness and when the Tigers tried to adjust it just opened up other parts of the game for Glen Rose. The Tigers became frustrated and the situation just got worse—much like the Barton game of 90. Both those Tiger teams were very good teams but were just playing teams that were better. Glen Rose showed how good they were when they defeated Shiloh the next week in a game I personally gave them very little chance of winning—shows what I know!

After a great previous season that ended in disappointing fashion and the graduation of ten seniors that had carried much of the load there was some negativism by the faithful going into the 2008 season. Again for the third season in a row they would have to find a quarterback and again there was a senior who had been playing D-back and part-time wide-out just waiting for his chance in Jordan Shelby. Some of the faithful worried if Shelby would be able to handle the job because he had had very little meaningful experience and had been limited mostly to mop-up duty where he was only allowed to run basic handoffs to the running backs and milk the clock. Another worry of some was the size of the line. Most of the size had graduated the previous year leaving the smallest line I could ever remember of a Tiger team. It was obvious they would be outweighed badly by almost every team on the schedule and most certainly by teams they would face in the playoffs.

On the positive side it appeared the secondary would be improved and the Tigers would have the best group of linebackers ever and perhaps the best in the state. Both Erick Stewart and Jordan Akers were returning and would be joined by Kolby Holmes who had done a great job when he got his chance filling in because of an injury in the previous season. I've never seen a group that good at Charleston and I probably never will again.

By the third game of the year it had become obvious that Jordan could indeed handle the job and was destined to take his place among the better quarterbacks in Tiger history. Although the line was small they were playing lights out and using their quickness, intelligence, determination, and just pure guts to more than hold their own against those much larger lines. Optimism was spreading like wildfire among the faithful.

The Greenland game turned out to be a nail-biter. After building a huge lead fortunes turned for the Tigers and they had to hold on for the three point victory. The Mayflower team was the toughest team the Tigers saw and the game was in doubt until almost the end. That game was truly a David and Goliath contest. Mayflower was huge and to see the two teams on the field it appeared to be a 7A high school against a 4A Jr. high. Sophmore fullback Ryan McDonald had one of the most amazing runs I've seen in this game. I thought he was going down three times in the first ten yard but when he broke into the open he had the speed to outrun an extremely fast Mayflower secondary. The Lamar game appeared by the score to be close but really it wasn't and the game was in hand all the way. The Tigers played very conservative, running just basic plays and never open up the offense. It was the most pure vanilla offensive game plan of the year. I was somewhat puzzled why Coach Kendrick did that but I saw why the very next week.

In the championship game the Tigers opened up the play book and threw everything they had at them. The Tigers did the same thing to Fountain Lake that Glen Rose had done to them the year before. They attacked their weaknesses and when adjustments were made it opened up other areas they exploited. The Tigers played very well and dominated ever phase of the game and turned what some thought would be an easy game for Fountain Lake to a convincing Tiger win. Unlike the win in 2005 I never got a comfortable feeling in this game until the forth quarter. Fountain Lake was an explosive team and could score points in bundles.

The 2005 team will always be special to me because they were the first. This team will as well because of what they accomplished. They moved into Tigers history by being the first to win a state title and to go undefeated.

The 2008 state championship team had five players who had brothers that played on the 2005 state championship team. Michael Meador/ Daniel Meador, Ryan McDonald/Andy McDonald, Jonathan Nguyen/Jeremy Nguyen, Bill Oldenbroek/Joey Oldenbroek, and Erick Stewart/Matt Stewart.

Many of the faithful—myself included—thought there was a good chance for a repeat state championship for this 2009 team. Gone were three All-State players and another that should have been. For the fourth year in a row they would have to find a quarterback and for the fourth year in a row there was a senior (Derek Haney) who had been playing other positions waiting for his turn. With the return of Ryan McDonald, Michael Meador, Kolby Holmes, and Eric Johnsey the backfield and receiver positions were in good hands. Although there would be some new starters on the line it looked strong on both sides of the ball. The only concern was more would have to go both ways.

The team was only challenged once before their quarterfinal loss to Fountain Lake—Mansfield actually led at half (14-13) until the Tigers pulled away for a convincing win.

The seniors on this team accomplished something that will be extremely hard to duplicate in the future. During their three year career they never lost a regular season game (30-0). They played in three quarter finals, two semi finals, a championship game, and won a state title. Their overall record was 37-2. Both the teams they lost too went on to win the state championship.

The decade of the 90's had been the best in history for the Tigers accumulating 9.3 wins per season. The decade of 2000 surpassed that with 11.7 wins per season. For the entire 22 year period (88-09) they averaged 10.3 wins per season.

That concludes the 22 year period in which the information in this thread was intended. As we all know the Tigers have now qualified for their 23rd consecutive year. Up until 95 it really meant something to make the playoffs. Starting in 95 it was much easier therefore less impressive. Now it has turned into a joke and really means nothing. The Tigers never went into the playoffs with less than a three seed and only twice in this period did they go as a three, six times they went as a two, and fourteen times as a one.

Many players were named in these post and we always seem to name the so-called stars of the team. In reality that center that does his job, that guard and tackle that does their job makes a team just as successful. They don't get their names called often but without their tremendous accomplishments those quarterbacks, running backs, and receivers would never become team stars.

I tried to pre-type these post at least three days in advance and reread them before posting. I will tell you that in many of them a lot of information and also some details concerning individual games were deleted out before they were posted. In a society where so-called political correctness takes preference over honesty, truth, and justice it's not always wise to state all the facts you know. Many people that read this board can't handle truth and especially if it interferes with the way they like to perceive things in their own minds.

I hope you Tiger fans have enjoyed reading about these Tiger teams. I have certainly enjoyed reliving the success of those teams over the years as I typed out the information to the best of my memory and with some help from other sources. I sincerely hope there are no errors in what I have written—I did find an error in the 2003 season where I left out a game in the playoffs. I have gone back and corrected that error.

For the third time the Tigers fielded a team in 2002 that was as good as any in the state, but being as good as any in the state does not guarantee a state championship and again the Tigers would fall short of their goal.

With a good core of experience returning from the previous year's team and with the influx of arguably the strongest group of sophs during this time frame most of the faithful was looking forward to another strong season. Several of these sophs had the talent to make the step from Jr. high to Sr. high and start, and some did. With super sophs Blake Bates and Drew Hill joining returning senior quarterback Doc Crowley and with several other talented backs the backfield looked to be excellent. The line was strong on both sides of the ball. Again the Tigers had an outstanding defensive team that the starters actually gave up less points that the previous years defense.

The final playoff game was a game that in my opinion the Tigers should have won. After building a good lead in the first half they got away from their offensive game plan by going conservative and playing not to lose instead of playing to win. It didn't work. Harding went on to win the championship. A 12-1 season was a great season but yet again the goal of a state championship escaped the Tigers.

Doc Crowley was selected to play in the all-star game.

For those who think you can judge how good a team will be by the way they played in Jr. high, I think this was the team that when the seniors were freshman and the juniors were 8th graders they won about three games and just got hammered in several.

I was at that Harding Academy game. That was the pass interference game. I'm too young to remember specifics, but I know there was a pass interference call/no call late in the game

A little bit of irony: My current roommate was a water boy for Dierks that year.

Any way you could catch this up at some point? I'd offer, but you do such a better job than I would. This is such a good resource, and I don't want to forget recent seasons

HorseFeathers

It looks like my old friend bcnu, Yakima canutt, or iofthatiger as he goes by now has gone inactive...

I'll try to catch this up at some point then. Maybe Painted Fan could help me

Maybe painted fan or someone knows the old timer in person?

Newport's streak is over this year. This will be the 27th consecutive year that the Tigers will qualify which will tie Newport's streak and also give us the longest active streak.

RTF

wow this thread is sad. Please tell me you have a life? please...

Crazy in all those years not once did they play Ozark

You obviously didn't read the details and schedules of 2004 thru 2009...

Legend

Im talking about before that. I know when the feud started back!

Charleston seems to have really benefitted from the watering down of the classifications. (going from 4 classifications to 7)

Charleston became one of only 2000 schools nationwide to be named a "Super Bowl High School Honor Roll School". The NFL created the honor roll to showcase the hometown schools of Super Bowl participants. Our own Steve Cox was honored today and he matched the donation of $5000 by the NFL. It was an honor to be able to attend.

I would have thought Lucas or Speilberg.....
They're in collaboration with Howard, but he's spearheading the project.

So... I'm thinking Channing Tatum playing ALL the qb's
McConnahey as all the head coaches.

I was thinking Quentin Tarentino because they be killin peeps!

While I appreciate your humor, I wish you wouldn't have made a mockery my post on this thread... I was really just hoping that people who are interested in information about our program could find some neat facts without having to wade through the typical FF BS....

Clara Allen

Oh my goodness.  No mockery was intended.  If you go back and read a little I am complementary of the program. It is a huge deal to put up those kind of numbers year in and year out.  I put my big girl panties on a while back and am able to take a hit.  I suggest you do the same.  Geez lighten up!

7 posts about who is going to produce the movie is a bit of a mockery. I'm not mad...lol. Just wish people who want to read about the facts didn't have to wade through irrelevant banter to do it. I like the banter on other threads...just not this one. No biggie...

ChucktownTiger

This is FF....better get use to the irrelevant post. I think warrior was just having a little fun with ole lineman. They do make great suggestions.

Clara Allen

Thank you.  What's wrong with a little irrelevant banter.   I thrive on it most days.

I get it!! Lol... I love the banter too...on most threads... but I concede!! Point taken...my original post will stay buried for a few to see... I vote Tarantino....

GB you know if this was about Glen Rose GOML that everyone including you would make a mockery of it and it would be deleted.
