Just heard the Smackover boys job was open. Anyone got any info on this?
Haven't heard anything on this one yet personally. What do they have coming up from junior high and what's that sophomore and junior class look like
There isn't a lot to work with based on what they had 7-12th this year. Maybe they had talent walking the halls that could help.
Probably need someone that's going to stay awhile and develop kids
Probably need someone that likes a little mustard on their biscuits. Mhmmm.
Hahahaha

Most of the kids that were going to be good... Quit the team. Not going to put any names out there. But, that's just how it goes. Started the season with about 11-13 players. Ended the season with 7. With only three making any solid contributions.
Why did they quit?
There are some kids that will put in some work. There aren't many that don't play football. With the combined conference thing now you start conference games while football season is still going so you have even less time to get basketball players ready after football is over. You use to get some time before starting conference.
The whole season ends up coming down to one game in the end to make the regionals. Anyone heard any names being thrown in for this one yet. There has been some really good athletes come out of smackover over the years
What's the timeline on this thing looking like?
Any candidates?
About 15 applicants so far. Not doing interviews yet. I don't know who the applicants are by name. I just know how many have applied.
Nice amount there. Would think there will be some interest.
What's the timeline looking like. I'm sure they will want someone hired before school is out
What is the timeline for this job? I would think interviews would take place this week or next. Any front runners?
Not a lot of buzz around this job? What are we hearing?
Interviews next week. Someone told me they are interviewing young coaches from the area.
Well that's probably what Smackover needs.
Would probably be good to get someone that's going to stay and build a program. Any names floating around?
Maybe someone from El Dorado. They have a great staff.
Who from el dorado would be interested in leaving? What other young coaches are in that area?
I said maybe. I don't know if any of the assistants would be interested. Gary Simmons usually has some top notch guys on staff. They made the finals in 6A this year. Maybe Smackover went after one. I asked some friends and they said the Caddo Hills coach applied for it and got an interview. Anyone know him?

I am pretty sure he was an assistant at El Dorado before Caddo Hills. He has only been at Caddo Hills for a year.
Wonder why he is applying after one year. Hmm.
Supposedly he applied for the Spring Hill job too. Idk
I heard they ran off a long time coach last year. Makes me think they are doing it again.
This tied to football or a spring sport?

No...
All Coaches are one sport coaches now at Smackover..
We made it a point two years ago to keep everyone separate and to stick to one thing.
Only other Coach that does two-sports is Coach Steele.
He does Softball/Defense for football.
We hired BJ Greene for baseball two years ago almost to get Strickland away from baseball/football.
Coach Preston was the defensive guy for football during the championship game, but after that season he got moved to just basketball.
That's a plus for candidates!

Seems to be working great for the last 2 years.

Well......
The basketball team had 2 seniors last year.
Baseball team has 5 seniors.
Football team actually did a lot better than what people expected after losing 21 seniors.
Softball team has 3 seniors and they are 24-2.
It takes time to adjust to all this.
Coach Preston just finished his masters degree. He wasn't fired. He's just exploring his options.
Preston is a good guy. Going to do good things wherever he's headed
The only problem with limiting coaches to one sport is that they only get paid for one sport. A lot of coaches out there like coaching 2 sports because it means they make a little bit more money.
Did Smackover raise stipends when they went to one sport for their coaches?
I'm not 100% if they did or not.

Another problem could be coaches trying to get kids to play their sport only.
You can't have that at small schools
So bad info being put out here. All the male coaches coach multiple sports at Smackover. And their softball team has 10 seniors not just 3. Coach Preston did not get ran off.

Let me rephrase that.
Three seniors that start...
Never said coach Preston got ran off. I said HE is exploring his options. It was his choice.
Tell me which head coach at Smackover coaches multiple sports?
Steele coaches defense and coaches softball. (The only one that coaches multiple sports that I am aware of.)
Strickland was head coach of senior high football And got away from baseball.
Preston was head basketball coach and was no longer the defensive coach.
BJ Greene was hired to get Strickland away from baseball.
No idea who the track coach is... So, that could be one of them.
My information is far from bad. I know several board members. As a matter of fact, I'm very close to the president of the school board.
Now last year. I knew Strickland was on the baseball staff to assist Coach Greene. But, he was not the head coach..
Cranford coaches football and baseball
Greene coaches football and baseball
Osborne coaches football and track
Preston coaches basketball and track
Steele coaches football and softball
Rowton coaches basketball and softball
Bishop coaches basketball, track and football
Stegall coaches football and basketball
Strickland coaches football and baseball
This is based on this years paid stipends.

Did Stegall not go back to JC? I'm pretty sure he got hired there as a PE coach.
Dang it PB. Yes he is leaving to go to JC. Did you read the whole post? As per this years stipends.
I read it all. I was just asking if he left or not.
All I know is, I was told that Smackover was trying to get away from having Coaches with multiple head coach positions so that we could have individual coaches for each sport.
I really didn't know all the Coaches who assisted in each sport. M
Maybe they just don't want a head coach being a head coach of another sport. Maybe you are both right.
We are both right. I thought PB meant that no one was coaching multiple sports. If what you were saying was head coaching then you are 100% correct. Which it makes sense.
How long of a contract?
Looks like 215.

That is exactly what he said. Not sure what he meant.
Oldman he said no coaches coach multiple sports in his first post. I told you that you are suppose to be my source from now on since you knew about the head football coach hire before anyone else. It is true that no coach is the head coach of multiple sports, I was pointing out that all of them do coach multiple sports.
He knew about it because I told him. Lol.

The first guy was the other applicant. I did get the wrong name the first time. But, I did correct it once I figured out I had given the wrong one. LOL.
I get all my real info from the paper, website, and talking to a few locals.
not really heard any big names applying for this job. Hopefully we got a home run coach like we landed with the football position.
Who has applied?
PB or oldman have to answer that. I have no leads on it yet.
Are they starting interviews tomorrow or later in the week?
I was told they started some interviews Friday. Not done yet.
Heard they interviewed some good ones today???? "Heard"
Is that a question or comment???
Looks like both
It's an I don't know what I'm talking about and was hoping you Smackovaries could confirm lol
Anyone heard anything yet
Still nothing. I'll update but I'm not the greatest source of info. You need old man or PB for the best info.
I have and don't want any sources on Smorplet basketball or their state championship cheerleading squad.
I heard the cheer squad is prepped for another run at state.
Coach Long does a very good job with those girls!!
PB have you heard anything about interviews?
Interviewed a potential candidate that they really like. He's a younger guy and they really like him for the job. They haven't decided yet.
Where from?
He was mentioned earlier in the thread.
Wonder when they would offer their candidate.
Word on the street is basketballcoach15 is the front runner. Haha. I would figure they will try to lock up who they want pretty quick since another basketball job just came open in union county.
The coach is from Missouri?
They will definitely be competing with parkers chapel for the best candidate
You think so?
Why wouldn't they?
The same candidates don't always apply for the same jobs. Parkers Chapel is not the same type of job Smackover is. I've heard most of the applicants are young guys without any HC experience.

You have heard that about Parkers Chapel?
Don't always but more times than not being that close together I figure they will have a lot of the same applicants
I heard. Nothing for sure.
I heard some guy from Camden interviewed and was pretty impressive.
I had heard that also but thought my source may have gotten it backwards with the guy from caddo hills since they big start with a c
Caddo Hills coach interviewed the other day.
I believe a Camden coach interviewed as well.
A source told me that the job has been offered to a current assistant coach on the El Dorado staff. Anyone?
I figured they would be offering sometime this week but I haven't heard anything
I heard this morning that they maybe going to bring a few in for second interviews? Can anyone confirm?
I think they might be at a stand still because of state softball/baseball.

As far as I know. They are still doing interviews. So, Yeah. You're correct.
I was also told by someone else that they have possibly offered the job to a coach from el dorado.
Rumor has it the position has been filled..
Who got it?
I'm not sure if it's finalized but a very reliable source says the guy that is actually an assistant at eldorado not the one that played one on tv at the espn game season before last.
Dark headed guy or the light headed guy? I only saw a few games of theirs this past season so I'm not sure which one it could be
He's dark! Believe goes by the name of Turner
That would be a good hire for Smackover. Has any heard that it is official yet?
Nope haven't heard anything. They might keep lips sealed until school board approves.
School board has to approve to the hire first. I haven't heard anything on when the timeline is.
School board meeting is the 22 I think
Coach Turner from Eldorado was introduced to the boys yesterday.
Was also told he would have to be an assistant football coach. Not sure how that would work. I'd pass that own to the caddo hills guru! Hard to build a program coaching two sports at the same time.

Being a head coach and an assistant is a common thing.
Strickland was head football and head baseball at one point before we brought in Coach Greene.
Keep in mind. We just hired a brand new football coach and he is going the staff changes. He brought in one guy with him from Texas. We also are losing Coach Strickland. Also, Segall left to go back to JC.
That's two positions opened that needed to be filled.
Coach Greene does the JR high boys. Segall also helped with JR high.

At the 3A level most of your players are playing football anyways.

Yeah, exactly. Smackover had 8 still playing football when basketball started last season.
I'm sure it is hard to head coach a sport while assisting in a sport right before it. Basketball falls in the middle so heading football and baseball wouldn't be to bad but assisting in football and heading basketball might be a little tougher.
Not being able to get the football players until the end of season is one thing. But having football responsibilities and then having to have basketball practice all in the fall and during the time that they overlap being in 2 places at once and/or having 3-5 nights a week being at a game, I can't see that as a golden opportunity. And won't be able to have a good program this way. Just my opinion
I cannot wait to see what Turner can do this year. He will also be helping with football this season as well.
Not sure he is helping with football.

I have been told he is going to assist with football. It may have changed from then and nOw though.
Idk the talent situation but I think this guy will get it rolling
Didn't win games but competed pretty well with a limited number of kids last week in Eldo. A long time before the season to get kids into playing shape.
Who all did they play down there and what were the scores?
Played Eldo and texarkana.
Where there any other teams that participated? How did cats and backs look?

How many does he have right now?
There were 6 at camp. Not many football players were there.
How are things going for the new coach this off season?
Do they not have the roundballs locked up until after football season is over?
I guess things are going well. Hard to tell since I haven't had the chance to see them play. The word is that he is working them pretty good though.

That's good news then. I'm going to try to make a couple of their games this year so I can check them out.
