Yep.  Right.  Not happening against the shorter height Goblins. ;)

Going out on a limb here, but I'm guessing she's related somehow to former Vilonia star Stephanie McNespey.  If so, she's got good basketball genes.  Also, let me be the first to welcome you to Maumelle Tuesday night.

I know it is really early in conference play until playoffs, but in boys:
Maumelle, Morrilton and Harrison have had a great start with 2 wins each with Maumelle and Morrilton tied for 20 important points dif.  Harrison trailing by 8.  These points should be a factor for seeding this year as usually in previous years West play.  Ask our old West rival Siloam Springs about that. ;)  But like I said earlier, still a lot of games to go.  Good Luck West teams!

Doggone

Speaking of point diff. Morrilton girls got 12 last night, not 10.

OK. Didn't know that. I was thinking you could get 13. Is it 13 in football?

trackster, I like what you're doing here.  Maybe you should start your own 5A West thread on "My predictions for the 5A week".

Anyway last week's game for the GOBS/Lady GOBS was very exciting.
Lady Goblins took control in the 2nd half.
Goblins/DDogs were very even steven in the first half.  DDogs took control of the 3rd period by 12 pts.  Goblins came back in the 4th period.  Losing by 3 in the final seconds,  7+ sec left in the game, Huskey's three pointer shot just missed to go into OT.  Foul gave DDogs one more point to win by 4.  Good West game as you have seen over the years.
Anyway, Lady Goblins need this win.  I have watched the Lady Panthers over the years (no pun intended) and they are a very good team.
Goblins need this win to keep up with Morrilton and Maumelle.  (Maumelle/Harrison games, to come, should be exciting.)

seven, hackerhog text me and said that Lady Goblins points diff should be 26 not 16.  I checked and it should be 26.

Chief_Osceola™

Things could get REEEEALLY interesting these next 3 games.  There could be a lot of movement in the 4-8 spots depending on how the games play out.

Go Postal

Harrison needs to quit playing these edge-of-your-seat games for the rest of the West conference season.  Though very entertaining, they need to get the points diff for seeding in case of a tie.

bobcat81

Seven, I always like to look at how the home vs away switches in the second half - who played more at home this first half and so who will be on the road more in the second half, and vice versa.  Many times results in some interesting movement.  I was noticing an inconsistency in the boys and girls home and away - half of the teams should have had four games at home and half should have had three.  In the boys maybe check L.R. Christian and Greenbrier.  I think one loss for LRC and two for Greenbrier should be moved from away to home.  And check Morrilton girls as I think one loss should move from away to home.  I just identified these teams by quickly comparing the boys to the girls for each school in terms of number of home vs away games.  But again I did it quickly so may have missed something.

Thanks again for doing this!  I don't know how you keep up with it.

Bobcat81,

Thanks for catching those errors - you were indeed correct.  (Hopefully) everything is now correct at the half way point in the season.

As an aside, while I've kept the standings for a few years now, it is a manual process.  I've wanted to find a way to 'progamatically' keep the standings so mistakes like this don't occur but I haven't had the time to develop anything for this purpose.  The thing to keep in mind though is posting errors can (and do) occur so please let me know if you  see any.

The second half of the 5A West season looks to be non eventful on the girls side in terms of determining which four teams will make the post season (as Vilonia, Farmington, Harrison and Greenbrier have separated themselves from the pack).  On the other hand, the jostling for seeding though is likely to be very interesting.

In a bit of an oddity, Farmington, Harrison and Greenbrier all played 3 home games and 4 road games in the first half of the season so all of them will have 4 home games and 3 road games in the second half of the season.  No real advantage there.

Harrison travels to Farmington in round 9 (2/10)
Farmington travels to Greenbrier in round 10 (2/13)
Greenbrier travels to Harrison in round 12 (2/20)

This is NOT to award the title to Vilonia at this point because even with a 2 game lead at the mid way point, the Lady Eagles still have to visit all three teams (Farmington, Harrison and Greenbrier) in pursuit.

On the boys side, it is hard to imagine anyone catching Maumelle since they already posses a road win over their closest pursuer (Morrilton) and have maxed out the point differential in all (save one) of their first half games.

While Morrilton, Harrison and Vilonia currently hold the next 3 spots, each of these teams have at least one game result in the first half that causes one to scratch their head.

Morrilton losing at home to Vilonia should be considered a bit of an upset, but then Vilonia drops a game at LR Christian - thus removing a bit of the luster from the win at Morrilton.   Harrison's loss at Clarksville is also a head scratcher.

Second half matchups between Morrilton, Harrison and Vilonia:
Morrilton: Harrison (round 11, 2/17), @ Vilonia (round 12, 2/20)
Harrison: Vilonia (round 8, 2/6), @ Morrilton (round 11, 2/17)
Vilonia: @ Harrison (round 8, 2/6), Morrilton (round 12, 2/20)

I can see a small disadvantage for Morrilton here in that they play two tough games back to back but Morrilton has played well on the road this year.

One thing is for sure - it will be interesting to the end.

bobcat81

Thanks for the updates.  I'm an accountant by background so when the debits don't seem to equal the credits, I get a little anal.   ;D

Nice analysis. I had noticed as well that 2-4 in the girls all had more on the road in the first half and will have more at home in the second half.  But as you note they have created some separation so it may just be seeding at stake.  Normally there's one or two in spots 2-4 four that have to go on the road more in the second half, or one in the 5th spot that has more at home in the second half.

On the boys I have the sense that there's more opportunity for upsets by the teams in the lower half than with the girls, especially when one of the top four have to go on the road.  Although I'm not sure that makes it any more likely for one of the bottom four to overtake one of the top four, so as you note with the girls it may just impact seeding.

One final thought - I'm not sure I'm seeing the home vs away differential in performance like we may have seen in the past.  It's just a feeling and sense, not based on any real stats.  But it will all be settled in less than four weeks.

Thanks again for the updates!!!

5A West upset shockers tonight:
Clarksville Panthers. 78
LR Christian Warriors 75
Boys final

Boys Farmington 59
Maumelle 56
Final

Harrison Lady Goblins 49
Vilonia Lady Eagles 42
Final in OT

Though I haven't seen the Morrilton boys score or the Farmington girls score yet...
Boys/Girls barnburner games tonight goes to the Vilonia/Harrison boys/girls game at the "Spook House".  Both were so close that either team could have won.

Now, I could say something about that the Goblins had the other Humphrey twin out with a injury.  Or say something about the Goblins were in foul trouble with their starters, but I won't.  Still a great Basketball game!  Congrats Eagles!   On the Ladies game, Tate finally got hot on points, Sophomore Due made them points, too bad that our 2nd best shooter didn't get any points, but if she did, OMG!  Congrats to the Lady Goblins!

Still looking for them Devil Dogs and Lady Cardinal's score, as of this post.

I just want to let everyone see after 8 games of the possiblities that every West team can make happen in the West going for seedings in the playoffs. I highlighted upsets so far of a lower seed team beating a higher seed team including the double H2H's ties which means an upset between the higher and lower seed team at the time that they played for two games.

#1. Maumelle 7-1 tied H2H with (6.) Farmington but owns 1st round H2H with everyone else so far.  Has 68 pts dif.

#2. Vilonia 5-3 owns 1st round H2H with (8.) Greenbrier, (3.) Morrilton, (7.) Clarksville, (6.) Farmington and tied H2H with (4.) Harrison.  Has 28 pts dif.

#3. Morrilton 5-3 owns 1st round H2H with (7.) Clarksville, (4.) Harrison, (6.) Farmington, (5.) LRCA and tied H2H with (8.) Greenbrier.  Has 36 pts dif.

#4. Harrison 4-4 owns 1st round H2H with (6.) Farmington, (5.) LRCA, (8.) Greenbrier and tied H2H with (2.) Vilonia.  Has 22 pts dif.

#5. LRCA 3-5 owns 1st round H2H with (6.) Farmington, (2.) Vilonia and tied H2H with (7.) Clarksville.  Has 17 pts dif.

#6. Farmington 3-5 owns 1st round H2H with (8.) Greenbrier, (7.) Clarksville and tied H2H with (1.) Maumelle.  Has 13 pts dif.

#7. Clarksville 3-5 owns 1st round H2H with (8.) Greenbrier, (4.) Harrison and tied H2H with (5.) LRCA.  Has 10 pts dif.

#8. Greenbrier 2-6 owns 1st round H2H with (5.) LRCA and tied H2H with (3.) Morrilton.  Has 20 points dif.

Many of the last 8 games were very close, it could of gone either way on who won the game.

So people in other conferences might think that this is a screwed up conference and that the West is weak with so-so teams.  I don't think so.  They have said that every year, but the West has made a good run in playoffs every year.  One reason that I have always loved the West Conference in ANY sport is how close each West team are equal with talent.  Knock down, drag out getting for seeding to the playoffs.

Looking from a Goblin perspective on the next game against Farmington.
Goblins own the 1st round H2H.  The Cardinals beat the #1 Hornets last game in a close game, the Goblins lost in a close game to the #2 Eagles.
Lady Cardinals own the 1st round H2H against the Lady Goblins.  The Lady Goblins beat the #1 Lady Eagles by 7 in a close game, the Lady Cardinals won also by a lot against the #8.
Both boys/girls teams are wanting to move up.

This game will be at Farmington.

I thought I would make a chart on how the West games are very competitive with games played so far and yet 5 games still to go.
One thing is that a lot of teams wins and especially losses were by a few points.  In other words, it came down to the wire.  Great competitive play.
2/0 means that team beat the other team by two games.  0/2 means that team lost two games to the other team.  But what gets me is the 1/1 win and loss or even the 1/P before the n/a win against a higher seed.  On how a lower seed could beat a upper seed on any night and move up.  For instance, look how Greenbrier moved from the #8 cellar to the #5 first floor in a couple of games or how #1 Maumelle moved from the top floor penthouse to a lower executive suite losing to #7 Farmington and #2 Vilonia in two games.  So top 4 seeds, anything is still possible.  Nothing is still set in stone.  The Jeffersons are moving on up!  Love this conference.  Every game night is exciting for me to just at least hear the scores on who beat who.
v > = higher seed to lower seed.
n/a = same team.
#/# = win/loss
P = Pending upcoming game.

v >  Mau  Vil  Mor  Har  Gre  LRC  Far  Cla

I know Chief and the "old West" fans know how competitive this conference can be.  My question to seven, Elvis and even Almatrackster, have you guys ever seen this much competitiveness during a season spread across the board with 5 games yet to go?  I know that we have seen many seasons of who can beat who to get to the playoffs, but I think this is unreal on the spread in a conference season of who can beat who in conference play putting aside playoff seedings.  I feel for the West teams that do not make it to the playoffs because I know that you did the best that you could do.
Other conferences might think that they have a few better teams and athletes, that's fine and could be true.  We will see when playoffs began....
But this conference is so equal in athleticism for each team that each game is great.  You cheer for your team, but have appreciation for the other teams as well on their competitiveness.

off my soapbox for now...

Postal,

As always, interesting stuff.

Something I am noticing is both the boys and girls races have a pack of four that has pulled away from the bottom half and that each race has a two game gap between the top and bottom groups.  Two games (or more) up with five to play is a pretty strong position for all of those teams.  But as Postal is saying, the breaks have went the same way for some of these teams throughout the first half - will the law of averages catch up?

As an aside, while I've kept the standings for a few years now, it is a manual process.  I've wanted to find a way to 'progamatically' keep the standings so mistakes like this don't occur but I haven't had the time to develop anything for this purpose.

seven, I got you on this - I have some free time at work, so I'm working on developing something to help you out.  I need to keep my function-creating ability sharp.

Ponca

Harrison controls their own destiny now. Win out and worst they can do is tie for first in 5A West

The must watch game of round 11 is the Harrison at Morrilton matchup.  That will be huge.

That is so true, Chief.  Here's another way to look at it.  LOL!

From the score thread - it may have been hard to see since it was in an edited post - Clarksville boys beat Farmington 66-57.
