Lester was pitching pretty well, then all of a sudden in the 5th he had to leave the game with an arm injury (we will revisit this). My bullpen has several guys that are pretty low on energy, so I really had no choice but to bring in new callup Clay Buchholz and hope he does well. This is his first appearance in the majors this season. Well, he was awesome. I couldn't ask for more than that. 4 1/3 innings and only giving up 1 run. He kept us in the game and allowed me to not burn my entire pen. Heck, I wish I had called the kid up sooner. He is nasty.

Anyway, I was down 1-0 in the 7th. Bedard got taken out (I was really working his PC) and they brought in Corcoran, a righty, to face Baldelli. I had Rocco subbed in for Drew this game to give him the night off to regain some energy (plus I knew we were facing a tough lefty in Bedard). On the FIRST PITCH that JD sees he deposits it deep into the RF bleachers. 2-1 Sox. We eventually were tied 2-2 in the top of the 11th and Drew came up with the bases loaded and 2 outs. They brought in a lefty reliever to face him, and he hits a freaking bases clearing triple to put us up 5-2 and we held on for the win. That's right, JD Drew, who initially had the night off and didn't play until the 7th, had a HR, 3B, and all 5 RBIs.

As for Lester's injury, it's a fractured forearm (yikes) and he's out 1-2 months. Good thing I called up Buchholz as he's going to take his spot in the rotation. I also called up Billy Traber (LHP) to the Sox bullpen after I DL'd Lester.

Some major wheelin' and dealin' going down:

Boston Red Sox receive: Merkin Mahoney, SS (AAA)

Info: 5'11'', 207 lbs, B/T: S/R, 18 years old, Salary: $385 K

Stats (AAA): .351 AVG, 1 HR, 15 RBI, 10 SB

Chicago White Sox receive: Julio Lugo, SS

Info: 6'1'', 175 lbs, B/T: R/R, 33 years old, Salary: $5M

Stats: .218 AVG, 0 HR, 5 RBI, 1 SB

Money saved: $4.6M

Boston Red Sox receive: Chris Davis, 1B; Taylor Teagarden, C; CJ Wilson, RP

Davis stats: .252 AVG, .316 OBP, 3 HR, 16 RBI (6'4'', 235 lbs, 22 years old, Salary: $400 K)

Teagarden stats: .309 AVG, .350 OBP, 6 HR, 19 RBI (6'1'', 200 lbs, 25 years old, Salary: $400 K)

Wilson stats: 10 G, 1-0, 3.95 ERA, 13 K, 1.39 WHIP (6'1'', 210 lbs, 28 years old, Salary: $590 K)

Texas Rangers receive: David Ortiz, DH; George Kottaras, C; Takashi Saito, RP

Ortiz stats: .207 AVG, .255 OBP, 7 HR, 16 RBI (6'4'', 230 lbs, 33 years old, Salary: $12.8M)

Kottaras stats: 2/19, 0 HR, 0 RBI (6'0'', 185 lbs, 25 years old, Salary: $400 K)

Saito stats: 10 G, 1-2, 8.74 ERA, 8 K, 1.94 WHIP (6'2'', 214 lbs, 39 years old, Salary: $1.6M)

Money saved: $13.5M

That's right, I upgraded at DH/1B with Chris Davis (22) over David Ortiz (33), got a HUGE upgrade at C with Teagarden (who's probably going to start) over Kottaras, and upgraded at RP with Wilson (28) over Saito (39). And in all of that, I saved $18.1M! My budget, AKA the salary room you have to spend on free agents, is now sitting at $82M. Not too long ago before I made the Wakefield trade and now these it was around $50M. I'm also really pumped about getting the stud prospect Merkin Mahoney (I repeat, 18 years old) for freakin Lugo. I promoted Mahoney immediately to the Red Sox, but I'm going to take it slow and have him as my backup INF for now unless he just starts tearing the cover off the ball. Lowrie back to starting at SS now. Love these trades.

AB™

What in the world has Chris Davis been doing in Texas?  .252, 3 HR, 16 RBI??  Hopefully he'll hit for you and you saved a lot of money and got 11 years younger at 1B/DH.  Tegarden is a very good young C on my game as well so that's a good move on your part.  You had zilch at catcher.

Yeah, I'm surprised Davis wasn't putting up bigger numbers either but I think I'll be able to turn him around. He's only 22. It's not like Papi was doing anything either. He was hitting like .215.

Varitek was doing ok for a while but he's hit a wall as of late and his AVG has dropped to .240. I plan on putting Teagarden in as the starting C and Varitek serving mainly as a pretty good backup.

It's also nice having another good lefty in the pen with CJ Wilson on the team now. Saito was horrible for us anyway - 8.74 ERA. Great deal all around.

You straight up FLEECED the Rangers.

And the White Sox.

Hard to believe they would give up an 18 year old SS hitting .351 in AAA straight up for Lugo, but they did. I'm really excited to see how some of these prospects I have develop, especially the two AA pitchers I got in the Wakefield trade and now Mahoney at SS. I will post a minor league update later.

msubulldogs21

I'm also going to do my best to trade Smoltz. He's been doing well for me, but 40+ year old SP's don't tend to stick around too much longer. (I'm thinking in terms of him probably retiring after the season is over and if that happens I get nothing for him) I think I'll be able to get a nice return on him too. Plus, on the game his salary is $20M and it will be nice to get rid of that contract and give myself a bigger budget to work with. I should have a nice amount of cash to spend in the off-season.

AB™

Trade him for a minor leaguer that's putting up good numbers and move someone else into the rotation.

msubulldogs21

Boston Red Sox receive: Zack Greinke, SP

Stats: 2-3, 5.57 ERA, 46 Ks

Kansas City Royals receive: John Smoltz, SP

Stats: 3-2, 3.49 ERA, 35 Ks

What an awesome deal. Straight up. I guess the KC management soured on Greinke as he's really struggled so far this season. I'm thrilled to get him for Smoltz. He's had a bad year, but it's still early and I think I can turn him around. Plus, Greinke is under contract for the next 3 years at $6M per and Smoltz was making $18M.

When Lester comes back from his injury (out 1-2 months) I will have a rotation of:

Beckett
Lester
Dice-K
Greinke
Buchholz

Right now I have Brad Penny as my #5 but when Lester returns I can move him to the bullpen as a long man/setup guy.

AB™

What a fair trade.  And you have fair trades turned on right?

Yes.

But just think to yourself - when you can get a guy that's over 40 years old, for an up and coming young stud, straight up, you gotta do it.

This was an epic comeback. I was being shut down til I grabbed 3 in the 8th. Then, in the bottom of the 9th, Mr. Clutch, JD Drew, hit a walk off 3 run bomb! What a game.

Season high 4 game win streak.

Mahoney is the 18 year old SS I traded for recently from the White Sox. This was his major league debut. Pretty nice job. Got a double in his first MLB at bat followed by a HR over the monster. I'm going to be playing him a lot. Probably will just stick with him and watch him develop as he's only 18.

Like a freaking idiot I was trying to get the CG with Dice when he was obviously tired, and he gave up a 3 run bomb to Cuddyer with 2 outs in the 9th. Ugh. Still came back to win in extras though and complete the 4 game sweep. Nice start to the 10 game roadie.

Wow that sucks about Dice-K.  At least you won it though.

Looks like you are starting to heat up. Is interleague as lame on the game as it is in reality?

Made a trade before this game.

Boston Red Sox receive: Brenden Harris, SS; Emmanuel Cavazos, CF (AAA)

Minnesota Twins receive: Mark Kotsay, 1B; Brad Wilkerson, 1B (AAA)

Nice to get a pretty solid SS in Harris. He will probably be my regular SS considering I've gotten nothing there all season long. Cavazos is a pretty good prospect too so I'm happy to have him at Pawtucket.

Cavazos (AAA): 24 years old, bats left, throws right

.301 AVG, 9 HR, 37 RBI, .353 OBP

Nice trade flipping Kotsay and Brad Wilkerson, lol.

Thank you, thank you. What can I say, I'm the Billy Beane of video games.

I've tried to trade away most of my old guys (Smoltz, Ortiz, Kotsay, Saito, etc) for good young players. It's saved a lot of money for me too as I was able to shed quite a few big salaries. Heck, in real life Brad Wilkerson is retired. lol

Just made a minor trade, although a good one.

Boston Red Sox receive: Jarvis Bruntlett, C (AA)

LA Angels receive: Devern Hansack, SP (AA)

Jarvis Bruntlett: 6'1'', 175, 22 years old, bats left, throws right

.446 AVG, 5 HR, 42 RBI, .500 OBP, 4 SB

And I got this really nice catching prospect for Devern Hansack, who is a 31 year old sack of crap at AA. He was a good AA pitcher but terrible everywhere else. LA must've been happy to have him though, as he was immediately promoted to AAA Salt Lake and called up to LA the next day after they put Jeff Francis on the DL.

What a game. Sabathia dominated, but they took him out after the 8th and in the bottom of the 9th Mike Lowell hit a walk off 2 run bomb to dead center. Dice-K was great but wasn't able to get the W.

Oh, and yall will love this. After seeing A-Rod not in the lineup again and not having yet faced him this season I decided to see what's up. I figured he had suffered an injury and that he might be out for the season or something. Well, that wasn't the case. I found him on the Scranton/Wilkes Barre roster (Yankees AAA team) and they've had him there the ENTIRE season! He's batting .304 with 20 HR and 54 RBI. Instead of having A-Rod at 3rd, the Yankees have opted to go with prospect Doug Bernier in his place. Hahahahaha.

The lineup isn't much and has no pop, but the rotation is pretty young and exciting. I'm especially excited about my #1 and #2 guys, Manning and Ozuna. They could be real good. I've got some nice prospects in the 'pen too.

Obviously I'm going to call up Brunlett soon. He's the catcher I just traded for a few days ago. Snider at 3B is also a pretty good prospect.

RHS

That's freakin epic about A-Rod.

I love the 29 year olds in AA ball.

I'm going to try and trade some of those older guys. Obviously they're going nowhere.

Update time!

@ Philly - W 6-1, L 18-3, L 6-1
vs Florida - L 11-6, L 8-7, W 7-0
vs Atlanta - L 2-0, W 5-3, L 6-4

@ Atlanta - W 5-3, L 4-3, L 3-2
@ Baltimore - L 2-1, W 5-0, W 10-1

So yeah, I've been struggling. I went 11-15 in June.

Overall I'm sitting at 43-35 right now, 5 1/2 back of the division leading Rays and 1 up in the Wild Card over the Yankees.

msubulldogs21

Just lost 2 of 3 to Seattle to start a 10 game homestand, but the last game was pretty good.

I was down 3-2 in the 8th with 2 out, and Mike Lowell hit a 2 run HR to put me up 4-3 which ended up being the final score.

Getting ready to start my next series vs the A's. I think it's worth noting that Dana Eveland is their scheduled starter. He is 0-10 with a 7.48 ERA. And still in the rotation. Yep.

dc24

Hopefully your A's series goes better than mine, haha.

Good thing I came back to take the series. Oakland is the worst team in the AL and the Rays are playing well so I'm going to have a tough time catching them.
