Dardanelle @ Charleston (4)
The Sand Lizards realized how different things felt without last year's key players, but being able to pull away in the 2nd half seems encouraging. If they start slow against the Tigers, however, it could get ugly in a hurry. This is one of two games involving the 4A-4 where both teams played in Week 0.

Dover @ Atkins (6)
The Rivals Cup has proven rather vexing to the Red Devils of late. Despite having more success overall the past two years, the Pirates simply got the better of Atkis both times they met, itself part of a rare, if not unprecedented, four-game Dover streak in the series. This will be a good gauge on the effects of playing in Week 0.

Elkins (21) @ Greenland
Looking over the other picks, it's becoming clear to me that many of you haven't been paying attention to what's been going on in Elk Country in the offseason, and the few who have should know better. Even with a roster smaller than Hector's, the few they do have is capable of playing with nearly anyone, and key move-ins over the summer mean that Elkins has been trending up in the months leading to kickoff. While the Pirates should be the toughest OOC team, Quinn McClain will be quick to remind them why he was named Newcomer of the year by local media.

Mena @ Prescott (14)
Both teams in this game also played last week. It can be argued who had the better win between them, but the Curley Wolves seem a obvious favorite in this one. How the Bearcats fare might be indicative of this season's prospects.

Booneville (14) @ Ozark
There's a now-or-never vibe leading up to this game; The Bearcat seniors have never lost to Ozark, while the Hillbilly sophomores have never lost to Booneville. Even with both teams dealing with key injuries (the latest being Brandon Ulmer going the way of Jaden Hill), I don't expect the impact to be as great as could be feared. This is the best shot the Hillbilly seniors have to get that elusive win, but the Bearcats are the toughest team they'll face this year.

Newport (21) @ Pottsville
Let's give Bryan Rust a little bit of credit: he expects good things to come from his Apaches regardless of prospects. Even with a backfield that seems capable, however, losing your QB, top RB, and center in the offseason will prove a major hurdle to overcome. And this is before that suspect defense comes into play. Expect the speedy offense of the Greyhounds to take advantage.

Subiaco (6) @ Lavaca
I watched who were supposed to be two of the better teams in the 2A-4 last week, and they both struggled against high-class competition. The impression I got after both games: The 4A-4 would eat them alive. That's when I started to speculate how well the Trojans would fare against these teams. (We'll get an idea this season, as Subi's JH team will be playing most of the 4A-2 this cycle.) The Arrows...are not expected to be in the top 3, but they'll nonetheless be a good gauge for my hypothesis.

Waldron @ Mansfield (3)
This is the hardest game to predict this week. Much has been spoken of the turnover in both roster and staff by the Bulldogs this season, but the taste of success by the younger players won't wash out that easily. Mansfield, meanwhile, struggled to put away the one-man show at Hackett a week back. This could give us an idea on whether Waldron has a shot at the postseason in 2018.
