Ah another fan of the dreaded hedge hogs.
Those guys say the most awful things to teenagers. lol But, I can remember hearing some bad things coming from the cable guys at home in Gillett too. Neither fan base was G rated from the sidelines when we played each other

Well i dont hate rison anymore but back in school I couldnt say the same. I didnt like playing there and it had nothing to do with the field, it was always in perfect condition. It was those darn hedge dwellers that could be intimidating. Lol

LOL, cuckoo, I was one of the OHD's, the 'Original Hedge Dwellers'.  Still have 2 of the Hedge Dweller jerseys.
For the most part, our goal was to make the north end zone a tough spot, either offensively or defensively for the opposing team, and help pull our team into the endzone on offense.
We got loud, and yes, a couple of the more lubricated might get a little bit crude (but that wasn't encouraged).
Believe me though, we heard and saw quite a bit of foul talk and gestures from the opposing team as well.

cuckoobird

I bet. Last time i played there was 90 and both teams came in undefeated. You guys broke the "streak " on barton that year and our only losses were to the wildcats and bears

big E

We played at Rison my tenth grade year and I can remember a man shaking a cow bell in my face and saying your in Rison boy I just looked at him and laughed and said you must be a geography major.Thought that was the coolest thing I had ever seen to that point.

Lions84

Altheimer Red Devils and Brinkley had the Worse fans especially when they were Losing. We had stuff thrown at us and drinks spewed on us some games.

Oh man, playing at Altheimer was a circus, you usually had to beat them AND the refs.  Literally!
I don't know how they arranged it, but it was obvious the refs were VERY pro Red Devils.

I don't remember him carrying a cowbell, but that sounds just like something 'Pete' (one of the OHG's) would say during pregame, when the visiting team would be getting ready to run on the field, unfortunately for them, near the north end zone.  No man's land for the visitors.

Lions84

Doug had to wear an eye patch for 4 days after playing those Red Devils his 10th grade year;  They scratched his eyeball.  I got bit 2 years later at Home by them.  Uncle Rudy taped us up real good for those boys. Linemen got there hands taped like a boxer cause it was that ruff. I remember Dr.Pupsta telling mom I would be alright cause I was up to date on my tetanus shot.  Beating them was always the best.  Brinkley played pretty clean by  the sideline fans were the worse.

Hawg that gym dressing room smelled like pee.

Yeah, visiting teams usually couldn't win at Rison so they had a bad habit of pissing on everything before they left.  Showed us, didn't they?

Ahhh, memories ...
I was at the Barton-Gillett playoff game in 1990, the last Barton win before Rison ended the Bears' win streak at 65 games.
But there was another game between these two schools at Barton, and I can't seem to recall what year it was right now (1991 or 1992). The game ended the regular season and it was moved to Thursday night. It began snowing right before the game started, and there was about 2 inches of snow on the ground before the game ended. I remember Barton winning 30-0, but the conditions. It was fantastic!

cuckoobird

We played barton twice in 1990 and both times was stabding room only

SouthpawSensation

Anybody ever have any of those experiences of going to DeSoto or Marvell Academy games during the late 1980s or early 1990s.
Ahhh, Mississippi Private School Association football ... it was ... well ... different.

big E

I went to one of those in about 95 or so it was like watchin cold oil drip out of a bottle slow.

loyal fan

Tell a couple bug/mosquito stories.

big E

Elaine's skeeters had longer stingers they went all the way to the bone.

SouthpawSensation

It's a slightly bigger school, but I did go to Dumas once for a game, and somebody held up a sign saying "If we don't beat you, the mosquitoes will."

Yes they were nicer I had cousins at MA in the 1980's.

Lions84

Well it starts again tonite and I am pulling for a 6AA folks to get some wins this week.
I also hope folks will get out the skeeter dope , their seats and go to the games. It is still the cheapest night out in the Delta.
As for the 80's I remember hot buses cause back then  we had NO AC on them like so many do today.

LCC

At Gillett, when we left for games...several times it was "go down the levee". That's how we got to some games from Gillett. That's small town USA.
Elaine was not a nice place to play. My brother almost had to fight a BIG woman to get out of Elaine, after a game, one night.

LCC I bet those were some good times cruising the levees to friday night football game!

LCC

Those memories are the best of my life. Dirt roads, the bell ringing every time we scored, but most of all the community.

big E

I had a run in with a big women at Elaine  it was 1990 shE was mouthing us in front of our dressing room with her big bag of popcorn.Wonder if it was the same woman?

cuckoobird

Probably. Our clothes were watered down and a couple of wallets stolen in 90 as well

big E

They chunked rocks at our bus on the way out.

cuckoobird

Ours too. Must be the thing to do in elain on friday night

LCC

This was 1994, so it could have been the same woman. Her son was probably one of those 22 year old seniors.
This woman opened her door and hit his car. He didn't say anything that time. Then she didn't it again and he said something. Then she did it 2 times on purpose and that's all it took. Lol

cuckoobird

I remember dad telling me about that

Brinkley rocked our buses on the way out and I remember needing a police escort out of Holly Grove...ahh the good ole days  :)

Cheek

When we played Altheimer, we would get dressed out  prior to leaving England, except for our helmets and shoulder pads. We parked the bus behind the visitors bleachers and did not go to any locker room.  When the game was over, we would load the bus fully dressed. We would remain that way until we left town.   Yes, the good old days

cuckoobird

We did the same with helmets on of course

big E

I kinda got the feeling that the main occupation in Altheimer was of a pharmaceutical nature with all those cadillacs and suv's runnin around.

RiverEagle079

My dad told me about the des arc mccroy fight back in the 80's it got bad to the point that the band got involved

big E

When the band gets involved thats a fight.

Pick_DA_EAGLES

It was definitely  a fight, both teams, both bands and some fans.

My first and only time going to a game in Altheimer. Parked my vehicle and walked toward the stadium and just inside the fence, stepped in a hole and about twisted my ankle. I hope the field wasn't in that bad of shape.

Field wasnt bad at altheimer.
[/quot

I do not remember the field being that bad, but the markings were terrible.  I do not think there was a straight line on the field.
It must have been lime or chalk , because it was not paint.  The only good thing about playing in Altheimer was the announcer.  I can still hear him saying " That play was sout  up by Willie Davis."

cuckoobird

Willie davis played a long time because i remember him saying that too for 6 years

I believe it was a set of boys all named Willie Davis (cousins, brothers father and son etc) cause they had a Willie Davis back in the early 1980's
