Title: It's True... Coach Woods to Conway
Post by: ARDA2 on November 26, 2008, 09:22:24 am

What everyone needs to realize is the person or superintendant that is going to be the one that hires the next coach is DR. Murray who came from Springdale High School. He has a passion for football and for winning. He knows the success of the 7A west very well and knows those coaches very well. His first coach that he will go after is Chris Wood from Har-Ber. YOu can all say what you want, but Dr. Murray and Chris have a great relationship and Chris has been very successful every where he has been. He is a winner and Dr5. Murray likes that. Don't be surprised if that is who he goes after. In my opinion, Conway is one of the best coaching jobs in the state.

hoops22 apparently was right on the money.  Several sources around the state are confirming Woods plans to announce this Saturday regardless of the outcome of the Har-Ber@Southside game.  One of the coaches on Har-Ber has been leaking some of the info.

Anyway, very interesting backdrop to the upcoming semi-final.

Is he going to drag his big time coaching staff with him?

If so 479BoyZ will have a COW!

I doubt he leaves, but if he does... Hahahahahaha....

Play this up! Cause a distraction for their players!

Actually, Earl PMed me with some info in regards to this on Monday night.......I don't want to misquote him so, hopefully, he can jump in and, if he chooses, release the info that he was told Monday day.......

If this is true the timing, by both Conway and Woods, is at best, unfortunate......those kids deserve a head coach that is not job hunting in the middle of the playoffs........

I agree , but it might explain the new offense Coach Woods has been practicing all week.

The " Wimpy Wildcat, Jump Ship, Bail Out, Stage Left " Formation.

Hopefully Earl will be willing to share some of the info that he is privy to.......this deal could get VERY ugly.........and on several different fronts....... :-\ :-\

Again, if this is true, and you know that I am not a HarBer fan,.......the kids there are going to be the victims of some incredibly poorly timed adult decisions at the absolute worst time.......

If this deal needed to happen....why could it not have waited until HarBers season was over??..??

Conway should have never asked and, certainly, Wood should have never allowed himself to be distracted while his team was still in the playoffs.......his players and the folks who are currently paying his salary deserve more.....

Although, if this is true, it would certainly validate all of the rumors about Wood's arrogance and lack of class.........

Looks like Woods is going to pull a Rich Rodriguez...deny...deny...bolt.  Har-Ber might go after him like West Virginia went after Rodriquez.

Two things yesterday I saw and heard that made me think it was true:

1) The AAA office was all a buzz about something. I was down there yesterday tending to some officiating business for the upcoming season, and something had stirred up a hornet's nest. I got there and was told our meeting was cancelled due to a rather "urgent" issue. While I was there, I heard three names that rang a bell - Woods, Scoggins, and Rollins. What was strange was they kept saying the "Conway situation".

2) My wife and I ran into an old friend at dinner last night that happens to be very close to the Har-Ber coaching staff. He was visibly stressed, and said he had to get back they had some big meeting. He didn't come out and say what exactly, but said there were big changes on the way. We were kidding him about some new "secret weapon" for the playoffs, and he said "no, this is about coaches".

After that, the pieces kind of fell together in my head. Of course, I came home and posted this last night...

Har-Ber Coach leaves for Conway as their new football head coach and makes more money then Bentonville Coach does.

That's not the first time I heard this today. I think this story has some legs to it.

I figured Woods was going, and it sounded to me like the Springdale Administration was not happy with how it was going down!

I don't know if the Springdale admin. are going to offer a perfidious coach more dough.  It will be hard to trust him after this.  I am sure he is already denying it.

May be more talk on here than around the school and the kids.  They may be worried about football.   Anyway, if the man does take another job isn't that his business and isn't it first of all about what is in his and his families best interest?   I doubt he had control over when Conway, if Conway, called to ask if he was interested.  He could say, I can't talk about that now, but than is an individual thing and perhaps they didn't want to wait two weeks for him to call back.  Who knows, but I don't see it as that big a deal as long as he is doing his job and getting his team ready for Friday night.

Seriously, 479, I give you a hard time, but I thought you were smarter than that!

Calling a High School kid during playoffs and asking him if he's heard anything about his coach?

Man, that should take, oh, 2 minutes to make the rounds. If they are already out for Thanksgiving it may take a little longer.

IF, it's true, good for Conway but I would be surprised if many Har-Ber coaches left to follow.  I would think they were settled and attached to NWA with their families.  NwA always seems to be where people want to move too, not from.

Does anyone know any reporters in Cabot or Springdale who can confirm or deny this story?  Maybe a few inquiries to certain parties over the next couple of days might resolve this.  If this is true, I have doubts coach Wood will admit to any of until after the Friday night game.  But maybe one of the assistant coaches can say something off the record.

sigh...there are times that playing in the 7A is like playing SEC football.  This just feels like college...know what I mean?
And, for the record I am no fan of Har-Bers, mostly because of the way some of their coaches act but for the kids I am sorry.  All of this is poor timing and you have to wonder if it is even true.  WHY would this not wait until  the playoffs are over in 8 days???????

Seriously though, if he thinks it's best for him that's great.

479, that has got to be the dumbest thing I have seen or heard done in quite some time.

I was just looking at the AAA site, and I don't see anything that addresses coaches contracts and tampering. Does anyone remember a similar situation where one school (potentially) accuses another school of tampering?

Not saying that it has happened, but it sure sounded a lot like that's where Springdale was headed with this.

Maybe he is going to meet with them to discuss the transition and interim coach. In the end, stepping down may be less of a distraction to the team.

Whether he leaves or not.  At least he did not do the same things the basbeall coach was accused of to cause his leaving.  How did that situation ever come out?

I'm just trying to rationalize this in my mind. Why would Woods go to Conway?

1) More money - the obvious reason
2) Facilities - Conway seems willing to invest in facilities. On the other hand, Har-Ber has to play in the Red Dog's stadium, and from what I have seen, don't have the best football practice facilities at their school.
3) One Team Town - for what ever reason, this seems to matter to coaches. They don't like to share the talent and like the focus to be on the team. Look at Lunney moving to Bentonville. I understand that was his main reason for leaving SS.

Am I missing anything?

Another point would be the good relationship coach Woods and Dr Murray, the super. @ Conway.  I understand coach Wood has said there are problems with the AD and or Superintendent at Har-Ber.

479 part of me wants to believe you.  Now if coach Wood is strongly denying this story there are several possibilities to consider:
1. Coach Wood is telling the truth and never did have intentions of moving.  This still does not explain why someone on the coaching staff leaked this story.
2. Coach Wood is going to Conway and he is probable very irritated the story was released while he is in the playoffs.  Again who leaked the story?  Why would he go given the quality of the program?  Something smells in Denmark.
3. Coach Wood intially agreed in principle to a deal with Conway, but is now backing out for some unknown reason(s). Again who leaked?  What reason(s) have lead him to back out.

Baitshop, this is consistent with a PM I recieved.  I wonder if he had made deal, then he either told one of the other coaches or another coach put 2 and 2 together, and Wood's move was prematurely leaked.  Woods subsequently learned of the new alignment plans putting Southside and Northside squarely in his percieved easy path to a championship.  They are now scrambling to contain the fallout.

I think this has gotten to the point the coach Wood and his assistants each need to individually address the team regarding the Conway situation.  I think it would also behoove coach Wood to hold a press conference to dispel this state wide "rumor".

Alabama lured Saban from the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday, ending five weeks of denials and two days of deliberation. Saban, who two weeks ago declared "I'm not going to be the Alabama coach," accepted the Tide's job offer and abandoned his attempt to rebuild the Dolphins after only two seasons.

I've been away for a while and it took a call from 479 for me to even find out about this.

After talking to some select people in the district, coaches and administrators, it seems the "Conway Situation" was regarding Conway's tampering with Springdale and Har-Ber coaches during the season, constantly contacting them about the job, even before their former coach had been fired.

From what I have heard and what I know, I do not believe Wood will leave the program. Granted, football coaches are extremely fickle.

Seems as some people have let their hatred towards Har-Ber go far beyond a healthy level, creating vicious rumors in order to try and undermine their whole program.

It is obvious a few people are jealous of Har-Ber's success and how fast they have risen to the top of 7A. A win tomorrow night would put them in the state championship for the second time in their third year of varsity football. Quite an accomplishment, no matter how any individual tries to spin it.

As I have said many times across many threads, you can not control what others perceive for themselves.   Starting with their very first basketball season until just now there has been a substantial amount of bragging, self-promotion, taunts and basically general crap from an entire line of posters that have come and gone along with those that have changed their names but repeated the same.

Add to that the two head coaches of their two major sports have done things like treat their starters differently than other players and running up the score on smaller schools. An a complete lack of humbleness or humility be the majority.

They push that image.  You can pretend it's 'jealousy', but as was immediately pointed out to you it's far from that.  People see what they see and think what they think.  What's so significant is this overwhelming urge to 'disprove' others peoples own perceptions.  You can't do that.  They come by it honestly and each time you cry about it, it only reinforces it.

Of course that's what you think.  But jealousy implies you have something others don't have or desire.  Which is false.

A solid case can be made for those that think others are 'jealous', to typically be snobs that think they're better than others.  They go hand in hand.

I know you were exaggerating for effect, but the only real reason that Holt was that interested in a couple of jobs was because his mother & sister lived there.  I believe they now live in Russellville and he's pretty happy.  He has a pretty good gig there--will be AD someday and the town seems to really love him.

Far from unique.

Har-Ber has the nicer school, a more traditional student body, and has been extremely successful in everything is has done in its short four years of existence.

There lies your basis for the contempt.

The animosity has very little to do with how many games they've won.
Tell us why people are upset. I would like to hear it from someone who is and was not involved at the school on a daily basis.

Without mentioning race or the economic status of the majority of students at Har-Ber.

Good luck.

When has Har-Ber been the prohibitive favorite in anything other than basketball Sanchez's senior season? Certainly not last year, nor this season. Their volleyball team may be the favorite to win state NEXT year with Bain, Hesseltine, and the other stud juniors coming back, but that is assuming quite a bit.

As I told Baitshop, people in the RV do not hear the talk that goes on in NWA on a daily basis. People have a misconstrued vision of what Har-Ber is; a lot of times, they see the school and automatically think they are snobbish and arrogant (Smithian, disregard what I told you the other day).

I think you may be right on the volleyball team next year though, Harber may finally break through there.

I personally love Harbers school and never think of them being arrogant or snobbish because of that fact alone. The self promotion is what gets me.

NWA ADG
Woods said..."Southside held Har-Ber to its second-lowest point total of the regular season, and Wood calls the Rebels' defense "without a doubt one of the top three we play all year."

One of the top three? What a spos coach Wood is.  I am sure he said more in dissing Southside's defense.  A defense which held you to the second lowest point total of the season after second string was in place in the 4th quarter in a prevent defense and you got a couple of cheap scores?

http://www.nwarktimes.com/adg/Sports/244873/ (http://www.nwarktimes.com/adg/Sports/244873/)

NWA Times

"...That offensive balance is what will have to carry Har-Ber against Southside. The Rebels are fundamentally sound and flaws on defense are few...."

This looks like more Wood sposspeak.  Damning with faint praise. I am sure the the reporter had to paraphrase coach Wood.

http://www.nwarktimes.com/nwat/Sports/71558/ (http://www.nwarktimes.com/nwat/Sports/71558/)

Anyway, Southside defense take note..coach Wood has little respect for you.  Kinda reminds me of the trash talking Wood did before our last game.  I can't wait to hear what he said off the record.

Also of interest in these articles is what was not said.  Also checking the Conway Log Cabin, other NWA papers, Times Record....nothing about coach Wood leaving to Conway.  I understand, in deference to Har-Ber players,  no article about the Conway situation will be published during the playoffs.  I also understand coach wood has asked players and coaching staff to stop reading FF.  Some players with inside information do not need to read FF and think "Coach Wood stinks and I don't want to play for him anymore."

Title: Re: It's True... Coach Woods to Conway
Post by: wampuscatblue on November 28, 2008, 11:14:32 am
Maybe Wood is not the coach that is being considered for Conway.  THREE months ago I was told the next head coach of the wampus Cats was an assistant coach on the Harber staff---it won't be hard to figure out which one has a tie to  both Murry and the community.

Sad thing is why would anyone want the job?  The money is probably not even in the top 12-15 in the state--most current head coaches would take a pay cut to take the job.  Of course, it will be until 2013-2015 before Conway is even close to splitting, so maybe that is a draw.  The thing is that participation in all Conway athletics is down, not just football.  This has become a town where kids find other things to do than participate in athletics.  However, back to football.

One of the 8th grade teams this year either won one or went winless -cant remember.  the other did decent.  The two 9th grade teams both stunk--neither had any offense at all.  Both struggled to win games and the white team had around 30 players total.

The senior high team didn't have a single playmaker on the offensive side of the ball--had only one quarterback 10-12, and the offensive line was the worst I have ever seen.  There was only one kid on the team bigger than 260 pounds.  Two kids on the team could bench press close to or more than 300.  Most couldn't even squat 300.

Yes, the Cox kid will probably be on the super sophomore team for the Dem Gaz, but that is a result of Kenny hyping him up and giving the ball to him 30 times a game.  I still say that this was the only year in the past 15 that he would have even been a starter but that is because the talent level is so far down.  He's a good player, but not a big time playmaker.

Also, I know someone on the search committee (interview panel, whatever you want to call it) and there has been no interviews conducted and no job offer given.  One thing to understand is that in Conway every process will be followed step by step---If a teacher at one school wants to move to another school he/she must first resign their old job and reinterview for the new school.  They don't even shift staff from one school to another without an interview, so I doubt very highly that wood or anyone else has been given the job.  It's just not how the system in Conway works.  Dianne Allen wouldn't go for it.

Title: Re: It's True... Coach Woods to Conway
Post by: wampuscatblue on November 28, 2008, 11:23:05 am
Another interesting thing will be what happens with the assistants.  I talked to someone two days ago and he said that none of them have been told if they will be kept or retained.  Sound slike the new coach can reassign his staff or bring in people to his choosing.  Sad thing is this will affect a lot of families---some of whom were brought in here by Kenny Smith.  I think Coach Hughes moved his family here from Springdale or Fort Smith and has children.  Coach Sessions moved his family here from West Memphis.  It would be sad for their families if either of them were told they had to move on, especially since both were recruited by Conway to move here to work.  It was long rumored that Coach Scwartz was brough back here to be the next head coach.  Of course, that was under a different supe.  Coach Kennedy is a great guy and everyone says he's an excellent coach.  I figure Coach ross will probably be close to being done anyway, especially now that Kenny was asked to resign.  The kids all like Coach Bing and say he works hard.  It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.  I wish them the best and thank them for their service to our kids.

A lot of that is solid stuff, but we all know when it comes to football hiring their are all kinds of shenanigans that go on.

I bet you will soon discover that two things are not outwardly known.

1)  The salary will be creatively raised by some bit.

2)  They have it down to a few targeted coaches.  Just the manner in which they deliver that info to them plus including the committee is left to be handled.

As far as Wood goes.............

no, I understand all that. that's why if you go back and look at my earlier posts a week ago you will see that I mentioned a teacher raise that was suddenly put together as something that will maybe smooth a new coaches salary over with the teachers. But, the driving factor on this job is the facilities upgrade.  Citizens have pledged to raise millions to be able to build a new fieldhouse, new turf field, weight room, coaches offices, etc.  This is the selling point the district is using, not salary.

every teacher is getting a raise of 1.9% of their contracted salary sometime in December.  News of this came out a week after Kenny Smith resigned.

Golf Course rumor is that a group of citizens (Doctor's, rich people, etc..) went to Murry a week before Kenny resigned and said that if Kenny was gone they would "help" renovate and build new facilities.  Not sure if that is true, but I do know there is talk of a new fieldhouse, new wieght room, coaches offices, turf field, and more.  Multi Million dollar facility upgrades.

Hey ARDA2 - I broke that rumor on the 17th.. ;D

Who's Chris Wood's?  Someone told me this guy has expressed interest in becoming a Wampus Cat!

Bentonville has not printed shirts, planned a parade, read a secret thread or came close to seeing their coach leave.

Time to go to your playbook and find a new angle.  ;)

Besides....we have never let the facts get in the way of a good thread anyway......

I bet that if Bentonville merged with that certain "private school" that you would become a Van Buren fan before rooting for that unholy combination........

On the other hand.......you and J. Walter could become pen pals.......and sit with each other at EVERY game.....

You guys remember the state troopers in the state championship game in 2006 moving from one side to the other as we traded scores at the end? I wonder if that will happen next week with Barry leaving at halftime to come back home? He would make one heck of an assistant coach.
