Title: 2016-17 NBA Season
Post by: MDXPHD on October 26, 2016, 08:34:35 am
Started last night. Warriors got blown out at home against the Spurs. Leonard with 35. A lot of interesting story lines to follow this season. Cavs looked great last night too.

Think the cavs repeat? Or do the Warriors redeem themselves? I think the Spurs will be solid all season too. Is there any team in the East that can challenge the Cavs?

I agree the addition of Jeff Teague and Al Jefferson made the Pacers a very nice team. I would think they are only team with the tiniest chance to beat the Cavs in the playoffs.

I hope the Thunder beat the Warriors in the playoffs. The Warriors will implode after the season. Curry isn't even going to re sign with the Warriors IMO...

Westbrook is the closest thing to Kobe back in the day. I think the Thunder are filled with a scrappy defensive minded roster and I wouldn't count them out of taking down the Spurs or Warriors.

Not too far into the season and Cleveland is 6-0..looking like they won't be touched in the East. Warriros have already lost two. It seems like OKC, Clippers, SA, and GS are all going to be competitive this season in the West.

Pacers lose again!😡 This is not acceptable! I know Paul was out with a bad knee but still some one else has to step up in that situation. McMillen you need to step it up... Are get to stepping one of the two. We're to good to be at the bottom of the central.

The Western Conference is LOCKED for matchups in the 1st round with 2 games remaining in the regular season....

(1)Warriors
(8)Blazers

(4) or (5) Jazz/Clippers- these two teams will be playing but can still flip to either 4 or 5 seed

(2)Spurs
(7)Grizzlies

(3)Rockets
(6)Thunder

-Rockets and Thunder is a 1st round match up of that quality we do not see often
-Spurs and Grizzlies will be hard fought and defensively minded

I'm hoping the Grizzlies can pull one out of their butt and win this series. Probably won't happen. But besides Leonard, I'm not too overly impressed by the Spurs. I honestly don't know how they've won 60+ games, but I guess that is the Pop magic at work.

I have tickets to game 4  ;D I'm hoping that isn't the closeout game!

I think that's exactly what makes them impressive. They aren't flashy, they play good defense, and they make opponents defend everyone. Kawhi Leonard may be the most complete player in the league.

I know, but Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili aren't near the players they used to be. I don't think this Spurs team is near as good as years past, even though they won 60+games.

Side note, if the Grizzlies even had a semi-elite guard that could defend the perimeter, Memphis would be winning this series. How many times are Troy Daniels and Andrew Harrison going to float to the middle of the lane to help off (when you already have a 7 footer for a rim protector) and leave Patty Mills (or any of their other guards) wide open on the 3pt line? I realize some of these kids are young. But with a bit more discipline out on the perimeter, the Grizz could easily be winning this series.

wouldn't that be something to see. I don't know if they can continue to shoot 50% from 3. I am pulling for the cavs but the warriors have looked like the better overall team so far. Except of course for the historic exlplosion of points in game 4.

If they rain in threes with that type of proficiency they are unbeatable. But the Warriors really need to chop the head off soon or we could experience history again. Momentum is a strange animal......and so is the human psyche.

Paul George was just traded to the OKC Thunder... Chris Paul went to the Rockets a few days ago. The arms race is on in the West. If OKC gets a lights out 3 point shooter to compliment Paul George and Westbrook they can challenge the Warriors in a 7 game series I think. Maybe not win it but that would be fun to see.

Title: Re: 2016-17 NBA Season
Post by: beach bum on July 01, 2017, 07:15:29 pm
The JJ Redick deal was smart for both sides... No big name guys want to go to the 76er's and that is the team that can give Redick a huge deal cause they have so much cap space with so many players on rookie deals still. Sign him a one year deal and if the trajectory looks as it is then he can re sign for a longer deal at a lower yearly price if he wants next year or leave again to another team. The East looks so bad that the 76er's may be able to jump up to a 6 or 7 seed next season. They paid him double what he is probably worth in the open NBA market but the 76er's have so much cap space they just threw it at him. He can be a piece if the young guys stay healthy that I can see getting to about 45 wins in a weak Eastern Conference.

The big name still being waited on is certainly Gordon Hayward.... At first I thought he would for sure stay in Utah a couple weeks ago. They love him out there in Salt Lake City. But now that Paul went to the Rockets, Butler to the Timberwolves, and George to OKC then I see Hayward splitting to Miami or Boston. I bet he will want in the East for sure now. The Jazz are the best defensive team in the league and still might only be able to muster a 5 or 6 seed as a pretty dang good team playing in the new look West if he stayed. He can go to Boston and be the 1 or 2 seed or Miami and bring them automatically way up in the East. Miami went 31-10 in their last 41 games last season after starting 10-31 in the first half. Look out for them if they land Hayward. Paul Millsap could also add a lot to a team at a high level for another 2 or 3 years definitely as the other big name.

Pg 13 will do big things in okc. But I'm glad we moved on he didn't want to be a pacer anymore this was best for both sides! Im excited about having victor oladipo...this guy has a major upside! The future is looking good in Indianapolis! Go Blue Go!

Hopefully sabonis can be a good addition as well!

With Pg 13 going west the rich just got richer! Lebron and the cavs will cruise through the east yet again. Don't see my pacers doing to much this upcoming season but man oh man is this young group promising in the future!

This will be the look of the league in my opinion next year in the REGULAR SEASON....

West
1.Warriors
2.Thunder
3.Rockets
4.Spurs (the 2 through 4 seed will come down to the final days of the season they will be so close in record)
5.Nuggets
6.Timberwolves
7.Grizzlies
8.Blazers

9.Pelicans
10.Jazz
11.Clippers ( I think the 5-11 seeds here will be fairly close in record with a few solid teams missing the playoffs)
12.Kings
13.Lakers
14.Mavericks (I think everyone except the Suns would make the playoffs in the East)
15.Suns

East
1.Celtics
2.Cavs
3.Wizards
4.Bucks
5.Raptors
6.Heat
7.Sixers (what a 2 year jump from their 10-72 record two seasons ago)
8.Pistons

9.Hornets
10.Knicks
11.Magic (I think anyone up to here can get one of the last playoff spots)
12.Hawks
13.Bulls
14.Pacers
15.Nets (I think the bottom 4 in the East will be really bad because they are all rebuilding for the future)

I like it.  But elaborate a little bit on how the Thunder make this giant leap.  I still have the Spurs and Rockets well above them. But these are predictions so I would like to read your rationale on OKC.

I guess I am banking on the Thunder getting another three point shooter. Paul George will help that, but they need another one cause they were really bad at three's last year. One of the worst in the NBA if not the worst. Then I think losing some of those role players in Houston even with the addition of Paul will hurt them in the regular season. I do think they are built better for the postseason now though. Then with the Spurs Leonard is the man, but I think those players around him will be another year older and I think Pop will rest them throughout the year some and drop some games in the regular season. However, I think it will be very close between those three teams all sitting in the ball park of 53-56 wins and will all fluctuate between the 2 and 4 seed all year.

Sound reasoning.  My biggest question is Aldridge with the Spurs. Will he be the Aldridge from previous years, last year's playoff Aldridge, worse, or replaced?  The center position for the Spurs is a big question mark.  I agree with Houston being built well for a playoff run.  I will sit back and see how the Thunder gel.  Pop has quietly added Leonard, Mills, and Simmons for youth and energy but for sure will rest Parker*, Ginobili*, and the older gents.

The West is so tough.

Terrible product? Is it terrible because you think the games aren't entertaining, or because you don't like the lack of parity? The NBA produces great basketball on a nightly basis

Yes & yes.  The games aren't entertaining because the league is watered down with a lack of good basketball players.  Elite athletes, yes, but not necessarily good basketball.  On your last point, I'd counter that outside of about 20% of the league, there is not 'great basketball.'  Decent entertainment, but not great basketball.

I have seen enough NBA in person now to say the talent is not down.... NBA is the hardest sport to make it pro out of the major sports in the sense that only first round picks are guaranteed to make a roster spot. With only 13 roster spots for 30 teams your odds to make it to the NBA are slim to none. Even garbage teams like the Suns have a guy like Devin Booker who can throw up 70 points in a game. Compared to college very very few teams have a guy that is capable of taking a game over himself. I say this as a person that loves the college basketball atmosphere when a big crowd shows up. The only thing that matches that is postseason NBA games when it comes to the atmosphere.

I am a huge NBA fan.  I think that athleticism in the league is as great as it has ever been.  I think rule changes have allowed for many with lesser skills of ball handling, passing, and shooting to be able to exist as long as they are athletic enough to do what is needed for that team.  As far as star power, the league is in a good place with Lebron, KD, Curry, Westbrook, Harden, etc.    There are some exceptionally skilled players in the league now.  But the evolution of the game and the rule changes allow lesser skilled players to flourish anyway; of course that has always existed to some degree (Wilt and Shaq couldn't shoot free shots; all the stars of the 80s walked without it getting called. I am also a believer that the league rules allowed for more physicality in the 80s and 90s - not that that was necessarily better but players who had the ball a lot had to know how to dribble and pass well and shooters had to be good even with much contact.)   I do believe it is at a time when comparisons to past is fun but very difficult to do.  Shooting:  Curry/KD vs Bird or Miller;  Driving:  Harden/Westbrook vs MJ; Finishing:  Leonard/Lebron vs. Dr. J;  Defense:  Leonard vs. Cooper or Pippen.  It is a lot of fun; there are some greats; but it is hard to tell since it has evolved so much.   Just some ramblings from a lifelong basketball fan.

Very good points by rattler... I definitely agree on all the above. One thing that has changed now is the simple mathematics of putting points on the board in a different more efficient way. Shooting 33% from the three point line is the same as shooting 50% from two's. A team like the Warriors that have 4 or 5 guys that can shoot that high of a percentage from the three point line changed the game forever. The Rockets were so successful in the regular season because they bombed three's away like no other. Look how good the Cavs can look when they are splashing three's. Just imagine if the Cavs don't blow game 3 in the finals. I imagine the Warriors still win, but I think we see a 6 game or probably 7 game series.

We see it through the same lens.

More ramblings:  I still believe Bird and Curry (no offense to other great shooters) are the greatest shooters I've witnessed.  But it is next to impossible to choose who is better due to the game and rules.  Rules led to dominant big men in Bird's day so he took fewer outside shots than today's great shooters.  Bird could hit shots with defenders hanging onto him, shoving him, etc due to allowance of more physicality.
Would Bird put up tons of threes if he played in today's NBA?  Could Curry hit these high percentages if physicality were still allowed?   Either way, both are incredible and I enjoy watching them and their respective games.

It will definitely be interesting if Lebron does actually leave.... Cleveland got that pick which was originally was the Nets. They better thank the Nets for that trade where they sent Boston all those picks a couple years back. The Eastern Conference finals sure did take a plot twist for next May. There won't be a lot of love between the two teams for sure.
