I know Trackster is going to add the bulk of quality info in a couple months when indoor starts, but I wanted to have this thread already started for when it gets rolling and with today being the last day of XC for the Hogs...

Speaking of XC our women seemed to lay a bit of an egg on their result. They were listed as a top 5 or 6 are team all year and our freshmen from Australia, I feel quite bad for her. She has to be disappointed cause she ran by far her worst race today at nationals. The men's race is still to come, but our women got a disappointing 14th for them. That's about where I see the men finishing, but expected better from the women's team.

beach bum

Arkansas men equally as disappointing... I could only see the men's results down to 22 and we weren't even on the list  :o

beach bum

Just saw men's full results.... Poor Boit had a horrible race. Griffith did his part and beat Boit by 30 seconds when it has been Boit ahead of Griffith for us all year. I know the course was covered in snow in the morning before hand. I don't know how many times that young man has ever even ran in the snow being from Kenya. I hope that was not his first time ever cause that's the only thing I can think of is the weather negatively impacted his performance more than it would other runners who are well adapted to it.

RATTLER43

I believe it is the worst places by both teams I've seen in my life.  Truly disappointed.  Either recruiting or preparation/training must improve.    Hoping indoor is much better.   I believe it will be.

You literally just answered the question I was about to ask... I thought this may be the worst combined showing we have ever had. I think we'll be ok in indoor cause some people just had bad showings at the wrong time at nationals when they had been performing better all year.

RATTLER43

We are the Razorbacks.  My expectations are sky high every year.  Indoor must be better to get this bitter taste out of my mouth.

A lot of nice young distance runners, the Weeks twins as seniors, Payton, Kelsey Herman is back...Janeek should be better. Looking forward to it.

I posted this on the high school thread by accident:

.... Kelsey Herman is listed!  Hoping for a breakout season for her to go along with Payton, Lexi, and Tori ...

Also see Freier listed!    This could be a great year!

I have read this post many times since cross country season and typed a response then deleted it each time.  It applies to cross country and track and field.   But, I posted it this time.
Seems like the John McDonnell groups never "ALL or almost ALL had bad showings at the same time at the championship season during any of the seasons".  His athletes tended to rise to the occasion and I believe that some of it had to do with his approach in training and/or in his psychological approach to his athletes.   My opinion.    We have been stellar, great, and good under Bucknam but not consistently top 5.  Much of that has to do with great coaching and recruiting at Oregon, A&M, Florida, and all the distance schools.   Coach Mac spoiled us bad.

AT

I agree, Rattler, but I don't always agree with Coach Buck's team building. He gets a ton of good athletes in very strange areas of competition, but doesn't seem to stick to a few strong events. It seems like we build a team for a good dual meet. Also, injuries have plagued his teams, which brings concerns to training also.

AT

Just a few examples of what I'm talking about:

We went all in on decathletes a few years back and had some great ones, but then suddenly we sort of recruit it and not near enough of a level to score at nationals.

Our distance is very mediocre. Seems like we rely on transfers from community colleges and hardly ever develop from freshman up. Sprints have been outstanding, though.

Field events, we are so inconsistent. Pole Vault with Irwin must have just been because he's a home grown product, because we haven't really tried since. We have throwers who can't score at conference (I'm not bashing these guys, just stating the facts). Our long jump and triple jump has had some good years, but then some really down years.

Relays have been a good area, too. Steeplechase...not much outside of Stanley.

It just seems he is very hit or miss. Sprints, very recently, and relays have been our only constant.

I did see today where our women opened up as indoor preseason #1.... Let's hope they can live up to the hype!

RATTLER43

If we stay healthy, we will be awesome.  We are loaded.   This is the year...again.   A great group graduates.

I will begin by saying we set the bar as high as it can be set.  We expect NCAA championships every year (or nearly).   But, what you say has so much evidence.   We had McCorkle then Irwin, then ....
We had the incredible multi-athletes, then ....
We had the incredible javelin thrower (who got injured), then ....
We had the incredible high jumpers forever, then we drifted back down to a top 20 high jump school ....
We had great 800m runners, then ....
We had great distance runners, then whatever happened  happened ... and now...

AT

Sam Kempka throws the shot 16.87m to finish 2nd in the shot put. Jeff Rogers throws 16.64m to finish 3rd.

Gabe Moore, a multi eventer just working on his shot put for the heptathlon, finished 8th with a PR throw of 14.57m. Derek Jacobus is doing the same thing as Gabe and threw 12.84m to finish 13th.

Not a bad start for these guys.

AT

J'Alyiea Smith jumped 1.75m to finish 1st in the women's high jump, which is a great first jump of the year. Could be a great newcomer for us. Maybe an unexpected national scorer? Will be tough, but should contend at conference.

AT

Alexis Jacobus (Weeks) and Victoria Hoggard (Weeks) have been known to start slow and peak at championships before, but doesn't seem that way this year. Alexis vaulted 4.49m for the win and Victoria vaulted 4.44m for runner up. Good starts for these two. We expect them to be national scorers. Desiree Freier vaults 4.34m which is a great start for her. She could help us win a national title, too. Bailee McCorkle vaults 3.84m as a Razorback debut for her for 5th and Rylee Robinson vaults 3.84m for 6th.

Paris Kitto, Genna Potter, and Olivia Groeber finish 9th, 10th, and 11. Kitto vaults 3.69m.

Maggie Turner finishes 14th by vaulting 3.29m. Morgan Hartsell was a scratch.

AT

In the women's long jump, Kelsey Herman returns with a bang! She jumps an outstanding 6.13m. This isn't a PR for her because she is an outstanding long jumper, but it is close! She could score nationally in this with that kind of jumping. Oh yeah, and she did win the event.

I watched the last hour and a half of the meet today after getting a rain soaked run myself in before hand to see Cameron Griffith DNF.... On SEC Network Plus I did not see the moment he stepped off the track. Last I remember he was looking strong about 800m in and then at the end it says DNF. I was so caught up in the unattached guy running a blazing time I lost track of Griffith. I am hoping he didn't get injured. My hope is he just felt off kilter and dropped being smart knowing its so early in the year and to not take a risk. Cause if he is injured what a blow to the men  :(

That is great to hear... I figured he was playing it safe so early in the year 2 weeks ago when he DNF....

AT

Some interesting races and performances I'm ready to see or at least see the results of. I want to see how Payton does in the hurdles and 200 most of all probably.

beach bum

Taylor Werner just obliterated the 3K women's field ... There were some decent women in that field too. I recognized that one gal from Iowa State who won the Big 12 XC title and Taylor did not have anyone near her. She has had so many obstacles that if she just stays healthy in the next couple years she is one to look out for nationally

RATTLER43

Yes!   If she has that kind of seaso and our others stay healthy we have a great shot!

AT

The girls look amazing. Payton looks fantastic.

Kiara Parker...oh my word. Field events outside of pole vault is a weakness, but you don't need to be good at everything. Will be interesting to see if we put Kelsey or J'Alyeia in a jumping event outside of their multi event. Hard to ask at the championship level.

What do you think, Rattler?

AT

The guys had some solid performances, too. Cameron Griffith in the mile and Gabe in the Heptathlon are just some, but the ladies stole the show.

Conditioning would have to be incredible.  Multievents take so much out of you and to score in jumps would require an incredible leap.  Payton  found out her freshmen year.  I'd try it at conference.  Then only have her do jumps if it came after multi events. Multi is where she has most scoring potential based on the past.

AT

Yes, it's true. Ladies won outdoor title in part to Taliyah coming back in the long jump and making an incredible jump for 2nd? Takes amazing strength and concentration.

Kelsey Herman just won the pentathlon

All the other women are doing their jobs getting to the finals who we thought would

Kieran Taylor advances to the 800m final

Cameron Griffith advances to the mile final running a real easy 4:12 which he needed also doing the DMR and 3K

RATTLER43

Taylor Werner with another 10 points for the women in the 5k .... Absolutely crushed the field.

beach bum

Men get 15 points in the 5K with Boit winning at the tape by a slight lean, what a race.

We picked up 6th and 7th to add the 5 points to get to 15 total in the event

Finishing the running off tonight with 8 points for the men in the DMR .... Great day

AT

Disappointments from Day 1:

For the women...nothing. They exceeded expectations everywhere. I wish Smith had scored the pentathlon and Baylark had qualified in the 200, but that is asking for a lot, especially the latter. This team should win this title going away.

On the men's side, they did most everything you could ask for. They didn't qualify anyone, including Ejiakuekwu in the 60 meter dash, which is a disappointment. Gilbert didn't finish in the 60 meter hurdles, which means we don't know if he would have qualified in the 60 hurdles. Honestly, that's about it.
