Title: 2019 Arkansas Razorback Indoor/Outdoor Track & Field
Post by: beach bum on November 17, 2018, 11:46:23 am
I know Trackster is going to add the bulk of quality info in a couple months when indoor starts, but I wanted to have this thread already started for when it gets rolling and with today being the last day of XC for the Hogs...

Speaking of XC our women seemed to lay a bit of an egg on their result. They were listed as a top 5 or 6 are team all year and our freshmen from Australia, I feel quite bad for her. She has to be disappointed cause she ran by far her worst race today at nationals. The men's race is still to come, but our women got a disappointing 14th for them. That's about where I see the men finishing, but expected better from the women's team.

Arkansas men equally as disappointing... I could only see the men's results down to 22 and we weren't even on the list  :o

Just saw men's full results.... Poor Boit had a horrible race. Griffith did his part and beat Boit by 30 seconds when it has been Boit ahead of Griffith for us all year. I know the course was covered in snow in the morning before hand. I don't know how many times that young man has ever even ran in the snow being from Kenya. I hope that was not his first time ever cause that's the only thing I can think of is the weather negatively impacted his performance more than it would other runners who are well adapted to it.

I believe it is the worst places by both teams I've seen in my life.  Truly disappointed.  Either recruiting or preparation/training must improve.    Hoping indoor is much better.   I believe it will be.

You literally just answered the question I was about to ask... I thought this may be the worst combined showing we have ever had. I think we'll be ok in indoor cause some people just had bad showings at the wrong time at nationals when they had been performing better all year.

We are the Razorbacks.  My expectations are sky high every year.  Indoor must be better to get this bitter taste out of my mouth.

A lot of nice young distance runners, the Weeks twins as seniors, Payton, Kelsey Herman is back...Janeek should be better. Looking forward to it.

.... Kelsey Herman is listed!  Hoping for a breakout season for her to go along with Payton, Lexi, and Tori ...

Also see Freier listed!    This could be a great year!

I have read this post many times since cross country season and typed a response then deleted it each time.  It applies to cross country and track and field.   But, I posted it this time.
Seems like the John McDonnell groups never "ALL or almost ALL had bad showings at the same time at the championship season during any of the seasons".  His athletes tended to rise to the occasion and I believe that some of it had to do with his approach in training and/or in his psychological approach to his athletes.   My opinion.    We have been stellar, great, and good under Bucknam but not consistently top 5.  Much of that has to do with great coaching and recruiting at Oregon, A&M, Florida, and all the distance schools.   Coach Mac spoiled us bad.

I agree, Rattler, but I don't always agree with Coach Buck's team building. He gets a ton of good athletes in very strange areas of competition, but doesn't seem to stick to a few strong events. It seems like we build a team for a good dual meet. Also, injuries have plagued his teams, which brings concerns to training also.

Just a few examples of what I'm talking about:

We went all in on decathletes a few years back and had some great ones, but then suddenly we sort of recruit it and not near enough of a level to score at nationals.

Our distance is very mediocre. Seems like we rely on transfers from community colleges and hardly ever develop from freshman up. Sprints have been outstanding, though.

Field events, we are so inconsistent. Pole Vault with Irwin must have just been because he's a home grown product, because we haven't really tried since. We have throwers who can't score at conference (I'm not bashing these guys, just stating the facts). Our long jump and triple jump has had some good years, but then some really down years.

Relays have been a good area, too. Steeplechase...not much outside of Stanley.

It just seems he is very hit or miss. Sprints, very recently, and relays have been our only constant.

I will begin by saying we set the bar as high as it can be set.  We expect NCAA championships every year (or nearly).   But, what you say has so much evidence.   We had McCorkle then Irwin, then ....
We had the incredible multi-athletes, then ....
We had the incredible javelin thrower (who got injured), then ....
We had the incredible high jumpers forever, then we drifted back down to a top 20 high jump school ....
We had great 800m runners, then ....
We had great distance runners, then whatever happened  happened ... and now...

Sam Kempka throws the shot 16.87m to finish 2nd in the shot put. Jeff Rogers throws 16.64m to finish 3rd.

Gabe Moore, a multi eventer just working on his shot put for the heptathlon, finished 8th with a PR throw of 14.57m. Derek Jacobus is doing the same thing as Gabe and threw 12.84m to finish 13th.

Not a bad start for these guys.

J'Alyiea Smith jumped 1.75m to finish 1st in the women's high jump, which is a great first jump of the year. Could be a great newcomer for us. Maybe an unexpected national scorer? Will be tough, but should contend at conference.

Alexis Jacobus (Weeks) and Victoria Hoggard (Weeks) have been known to start slow and peak at championships before, but doesn't seem that way this year. Alexis vaulted 4.49m for the win and Victoria vaulted 4.44m for runner up. Good starts for these two. We expect them to be national scorers. Desiree Freier vaults 4.34m which is a great start for her. She could help us win a national title, too. Bailee McCorkle vaults 3.84m as a Razorback debut for her for 5th and Rylee Robinson vaults 3.84m for 6th.

Paris Kitto, Genna Potter, and Olivia Groeber finish 9th, 10th, and 11. Kitto vaults 3.69m.

Maggie Turner finishes 14th by vaulting 3.29m. Morgan Hartsell was a scratch.

In the women's long jump, Kelsey Herman returns with a bang! She jumps an outstanding 6.13m. This isn't a PR for her because she is an outstanding long jumper, but it is close! She could score nationally in this with that kind of jumping. Oh yeah, and she did win the event.

I watched the last hour and a half of the meet today after getting a rain soaked run myself in before hand to see Cameron Griffith DNF.... On SEC Network Plus I did not see the moment he stepped off the track. Last I remember he was looking strong about 800m in and then at the end it says DNF. I was so caught up in the unattached guy running a blazing time I lost track of Griffith. I am hoping he didn't get injured. My hope is he just felt off kilter and dropped being smart knowing its so early in the year and to not take a risk. Cause if he is injured what a blow to the men  :(

Taylor Werner just obliterated the 3K women's field ... There were some decent women in that field too. I recognized that one gal from Iowa State who won the Big 12 XC title and Taylor did not have anyone near her. She has had so many obstacles that if she just stays healthy in the next couple years she is one to look out for nationally

The girls look amazing. Payton looks fantastic.

Kiara Parker...oh my word. Field events outside of pole vault is a weakness, but you don't need to be good at everything. Will be interesting to see if we put Kelsey or J'Alyeia in a jumping event outside of their multi event. Hard to ask at the championship level.

What do you think, Rattler?

Conditioning would have to be incredible.  Multievents take so much out of you and to score in jumps would require an incredible leap.  Payton  found out her freshmen year.  I'd try it at conference.  Then only have her do jumps if it came after multi events. Multi is where she has most scoring potential based on the past.

Kelsey Herman just won the pentathlon

All the other women are doing their jobs getting to the finals who we thought would

Kieran Taylor advances to the 800m final

Cameron Griffith advances to the mile final running a real easy 4:12 which he needed also doing the DMR and 3K

Men get 15 points in the 5K with Boit winning at the tape by a slight lean, what a race.

We picked up 6th and 7th to add the 5 points to get to 15 total in the event

Disappointments from Day 1:

For the women...nothing. They exceeded expectations everywhere. I wish Smith had scored the pentathlon and Baylark had qualified in the 200, but that is asking for a lot, especially the latter. This team should win this title going away.

On the men's side, they did most everything you could ask for. They didn't qualify anyone, including Ejiakuekwu in the 60 meter dash, which is a disappointment. Gilbert didn't finish in the 60 meter hurdles, which means we don't know if he would have qualified in the 60 hurdles. Honestly, that's about it.

I have the women winning going away. Maybe breaking records with how many points they score.

The men will have a shot at 1st or 2nd, but most likely 2nd. They will have to chip points away to get 1st and hope Florida has some letdowns.

It sure Rattler. Payton runs it along with Campbell and Magee. Didn't Kiara ran the other leg? I feel Kiara has been in that spot all year

Uncertain.  I've watched Payton run it and she is great.  Just thought Hammit's time in individual race might be better than Kiara's time in the relay. Could be mistaken.

Kelsey just hit 38' in shot put.  May have crushed her hopes of winning.  Hoping she can hang on and score any points now.  Needed a 40'+

Gabe has been killing it.  Just cleared 6'6"

Both ladies through in the 60 hurdles.... Sheesh that second heat was wild. They restart twice cause of apparent timing issues cause no one got a DQ and finally it went through clean on the third time. That sucks to have that happen in the hurdles as an athlete

Lauren Gregory was gassed in the last 300 meters or so cause she ran out in lane 2 for the first 6 laps... Not a very well planned race.

Carina gets 5th to salvage some points.... It would have been nice to get 3 or 4 points from that mile.

What a race from Werner to get 2nd.... She just dropped so many ladies who are the who's who of women's distance running including Ostrander, Kelati, Kergat, and Monson. I feel bad for Monson cause she was the favorite and must have had a bad day cause she did not even score any points.

Even Lauren snagged a couple vital points for us

Werner could not have ran a better race and you could tell that was all heart trying to stay up there the whole race until Hull got her at the end

56 to 48 right now.... It's literally coming down to the 4 X 400

If our women get at least 6th in it we win it all no matter what USC does

I hope they can do that cause if we don't then we are leaving it up to USC and let's not do that

What a great meet. Our women's team is so good, they can have a sub part meet and still win nationals by 11.

The men actually outperformed. I'm not content with where we are at right now, but I'm glad to see the progression the men had this year when I didn't think we would have anything.

Just to reflect on the indoor season even thought it ended a bit back:

The men actually exceeded expectations. I thought they might be top 5 SEC just barely and they finished 2nd at the SEC meet.

Here are the SEC scorers for the men:

200 Meter Dash
Roy Ejiakuekwu - 7th Place

400 Meter Dash
Hunter Woodhall - 7th Place
Jalen Brown - 8th Place

800 Meter Run
Kieran Taylor - 6th Place

1 Mile Run
Cameron Griffith - 2nd Place
Ethan Moehn - 7th Place

3000 Meter Run
Cameron Griffith - 1st Place
Gilbert Boit - 4th Place
Austen Dalquist - 7th Place

5000 Meter Run
Gilbert Boit - 1st Place
Austen Dalquist - 6th Place
Matt Young - 7th Place

60 Meter Hurdles
Carl Elliot III - 7th Place

4x400 Meter Relay
Travean Caldwell, Roy Ejiakuekwu, Hunter Woodhall, John Winn - 3rd Place

DMR
Ethan Moehn, James Milholen, Chase Pareti, Cameron Griffith - 2nd Place

Long Jump
Laquan Nairn - 6th Place

Triple Jump
Laquan Nairn - 3rd Place

Heptathlon
Gabe Moore - 2nd Place
Derek Jacobus - 4th Place

At the conference meet, I was very impressed by our distance runners. I thought they did a great job. Our sprinters weren't as strong as recent years, but we are mostly young there. Our field events were almost non existent other than Nairn in the jumps and Moore and Jacobus in the multis.

At the national meet:

4x400 Meter Relay
Travean Caldwell, Jalen Brown, John Winn, Hunter Woodhall - 4th Place

Distance Medley Relay
Gilbert Boit, Hunter Woodhall, Kieran Taylor, Cameron Griffith - 6th Place

Heptathlon
Gabe Moore - 2nd Place

I was so impressed with our men compared to what they were expected to do going into the national meet. Nairn and Jacobus both finished 9th in their respective events and were one place away from at least two extra points at the national meet. The men finished 13th place and that was about 15 spots above the projected finish.

What I'd like to see next indoor season:

Improved sprints, build upon the distance and get some individual runners to the NCAAs, relays stay as good as always, and field events make a comeback even if it is small progress.

I agree with your summary. Had no idea the men were going to come out of nowhere and be competitive.  Yes, something we can build upon.
Women:  Awesome!

Rattler's reflection on the women is enough, but I'll still write my thoughts.

The women had perhaps their best team ever, even better than the DomScott/Heymsfield teams, and perhaps one of the best teams in women indoor history.

Here are the SEC scorers for the women:

60 Meter Dash
Kiara Parker - 4th Place
Janeek Brown - 5th Place
Jada Baylark - 6th Place

200 Meter Dash
Payton Chadwick - 2nd Place
Kiara Parker - 7th Place

400 Meter Dash
Kethlin Campbell - 5th Place
Morgan Burks Magee - 6th Place
Sydney Hammit - 8th Place

800 Meter Run
Alexandra Byrnes - 5th Place

1 Mile Run
Lauren Gregory - 1st Place
Carina Viljoen - 2nd Place
Maddy Reed - 3rd Place

3000 Meter Run
Taylor Werner - 1st Place
Devin Clark - 3rd Place
Maddy Reed - 7th Place

5000 Meter Run
Taylor Werner - 1st Place

60 Meter Hurdles
Payton Chadwick - 1st Place
Janeek Brown - 2nd Place

4x400 Meter Relay
Kiara Parker, Morgan Burks Magee, Payton Chadwick, Kethlin Campbell - 4th Place

DMR
Devin Clark, Paris Peoples, Meghan Underwood, Carina Viljoen - 1st Place

Pole Vault
Alexis Jacobus - 1st Place
Victoria Hoggard - 2nd Place
Desiree Freier - 5th Place

Pentathlon
Kelsey Herman - 1st Place

Our conference meet went about as well as could be expected. The ladies dominated and never had to sweat the team title. Our field events are all in our multis and pole vaults, but they are excellent, and our running events are amazing.

At the national meet:

60 Meter Dash
Kiara Parker - 8th Place

200 Meter Dash
Payton Chadwick - 3rd Place

1 Mile Run
Carina Viljoen - 5th Place

3000 Meter Run
Taylor Werner - 2nd Place
Lauren Gregory - 7th Place

60 Meter Hurdles
Payton Chadwick - 3rd Place
Janeek Brown - 5th Place

4x400 Meter Relay
Morgan Burks Magee, Kiara Parker, Kethlin Campbell, Payton Chadwick - 3rd Place

Distance Medley Relay
Devin Clark, Morgan Burks Magee, Alexandra Byrnes, Taylor Werner - 5th Place

Pole Vault
Alexis Jacobus - 1st Place
Victoria Hoggard - 3rd Place
Desiree Freier - 4th Place

It is crazy to see this balance at a national meet. We were represented so well on the track. Our field relied on our pole vault and Kelsey in the pentathlon, but you don't need a large field event contingent when your running events are that good. The field events just provide the little extra push over the hump.

What I'd like to see next indoor season:

We lose Kiara and Payton, so it would be nice to see Jada, Janeek, Kethlin, Morgan, and others to pick up the sprinting mantle as they seem poised to do. We don't lose much in distance, if anything? I hope we dominate distance next year. Relays should still stay very solid. Field events take a shot. We don't have much already and we lose all of our scoring vaulters and Kelsey. Perhaps we can find another multi, bring on a new PVer and progress our own. Maybe we can also progress or find a jumper. I don't expect another national championship, but I'd like to see another SEC championship and competing on the national stage.

The whole Duplantis family was causing damage in Fayetteville today with his brother cranking the game winning home run... what a family

How brutal are the distance events going to be in the NCAA Championships? I'd hate to have to go 5K or 10K in Austin in the summer. I have seen Boit  running in a light jacket a couple times this month when it is obviously too hot for that. I immediately wondered if he is running once or twice a week in  the jacket or something like that to prep for Austin.

The Fayetteville distance runner is possibly the standout performer of the year.  The Bentonville thrower, the LH and TC vaulters, the Fayetteville prodigy, and the RussVegas high jumper had incredible performances on the boys' side. The NLR sprinter is also great.
Was a great year for T&F.

Payton Chadwick!!!!!  I've watched it ten times now.  Her move from 6th place and avoiding the carnage during that jostling between bama and USC was spectacular.  Kethlin Campbell (49 second split), Kiara Parker, and Paris Peoples were great, but Payton- wow.

I have now watched it over 25 times.  Payton avoided catastrophe.  But, that 'bama gal ....     I watched it in slow motion and just wow.   Looked like a hammer.  Not that USC would have caught Payton or Kethlin (I believe USC takes 3rd one place behind Arkansas if the baton isn't dropped.), but wow, what a race.   WPS!  NCAA champs again.

As much magic as USC had last year the opposite happened and an utter calamity ensued last weekend.

Taylor Werner continues to impress me over and over.... In championship races she always sits on the leader all race and just holds her place. If she stays healthy she will eventually win a 5K or 10K title in the next 2 years.

Janeek Brown is a talent like no other in the hurdles.

So true.  I loved Werner leaving the post 5K interview to cheer the mile relay team at the 200m mark then uncontrollable crying tears of joy afterward.  Janeek jumping on Payton in celebration was great also.  Great team. One of my favorite teams ever!!

Lexi Jacobus was named the 2019 Women's Indoor Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year while Tori Hoggard was named the Women's Outdoor Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The Razorbacks received 16 Individual All-Academic honorees, and the women's track & field team was named the Indoor and Outdoor Scholar-Team of the Year.

The Razorbacks received USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors in recognition of their cumulative team grade-point average of 3.423. This is the fifth time that Arkansas has been named Women's Indoor Scholar Team of the Year, compared to just the second time outdoors. The Razorbacks have been named Scholar Team of the Year for track & field more times than any other women's program in award history.

Cross country update:  Arkansas Takes Seventh-Straight Conference Title
The top-ranked Arkansas women's cross country team had five runners finish in the top-10, with four in the top-five, at the Southeastern Conference Cross Country Championships en route to its seventh-consecutive SEC Cross Country title Friday morning.  Izzo and Werner dominated!

I think one of Harter's few "weak areas" or perhaps better put, a mountain he hasn't overcome, is getting his ladies to perform at XC nationals. I've always thought our ladies outperform expectations at national track meets, but cross country has been a different story. Not that I would trade Lance Harter for anyone.

Anyone else see that Fayetteville grad Camren Fischer won the Mid Atlantic regional and got an individual bid to nationals for Princeton. I can't believe he won a regional as a true freshman. I knew he would be good, but he has a ton of potential. Great to see a local kid doing so well so early.

The men were on flotrack about a month ago, but on youtube they uploaded a "workout wednesday" on flotrack for the women's team today doing 5 X 1K and finishing with 1 hard mile after the 5 X 1K. Judging by the foilage/warmth it looks like the workout was filmed back in mid September? I like Taylor Werner's interview. She has a really good spirit about her. GO HOGS!

I finally have seen the final stretch footage at the finish line and as Trackster said above this sport is about the team effort... This was won by that narrow margin by our 3, 4, and 5 spots. Izzo and Werner cruised into the 3rd and 4th overall spot with a little space before the next spots. Devin at our 3 spot seems to nip in just in time before a few runners. Carina looks like she is bankrupt but holds on just strong enough to hold off 4 or 5 runners closing fast on her. If that race is 50m longer she probably loses 5 or 6 spots. Then Lauren moves up 8 in the last 2K. Our final 3 spots literally held off just enough runners to get the job done.

Congrats to Harter and the Lady Razorbacks! Great effort in less than ideal conditions. I was there and the conditions were pretty miserable. Update on my guy: Unfortunately, Fischer did not participate in the meet after learning only several days beforehand of a likely stress fracture in his femur. Fischer refrained from competing "in hopes of recovering sooner." It was tough luck but he was happy to have qualified for Nationals in his freshman campaign.

Harter named National Cross Country Coach of the Year!   Werner and Izzo in the running for outstanding athlete.

We lost so much from our track national title teams, I wonder how we will fare this year.  I don't know how many people realize that Harter's roots are actually distance/cross country.  The fact that he built great track teams is amazing.  He may have to rely on old-style distance points to be in the running in track this coming season.

Hoping we make another push.   WPS!!

I need to look up to see if Izzo has any track eligibility left since she was a grad transfer. If she does I could see us still getting top 5 in track with the distance core running well at nationals as long as we just get anything from field events and sprints we could maybe even go top 3 for one more year.

I like this from the article I read today:  The vaulters will be the first to compete, jumping on Friday afternoon at the Bob Timmons Challenge in Lawrence, Kansas. Nastassja Campbell and Lauren Martinez will make their Arkansas debuts alongside Genna Potter and Bailee McCorkle beginning at 1 p.m. inside the Anschutz Pavilion.

Campbell will make her Arkansas debut after a stellar indoor/outdoor freshman campaign at Stephen F. Austin last year, earning first-team All-America status indoors with a seventh place finish and second-team All-America honor outdoors finishing 16th. Martinez will jump for the Razorbacks for the first time after joining the squad from Cal. She earned second-team All-America honors in 2018 during indoor and outdoor season, finishing 10th indoors and 11th outdoors, respectively.

Thanks for the info!! I really like our chances then especially to be in the top 3 in both indoor and outdoor track this season. Throw in Lauren Gregory should be completely back by May and June to an elite level. I can't believe she got 52nd at nationals with essentially no speed work and restricted mileage. That makes our distance crew so deep knowing Izzo has some track left.

One wonders why Werner ran unattached. Harter is known for redshirting athletes to try and line up their senior years with more likely seasons for national championships (it is actually very strategic and I've seen it work a few times in our favor).

I wonder if he is thinking we will have a tough time winning the NC this year, so he's thinking about redshirting her, or if she had a minor injury, so he didn't run her attached, have her limp off the track, and waste a year of indoor eligibility.

I am unsure and that may well be his plan. But, Werner, Izzo, and Carina are ready to lead us to a podium finish.  Add in more distance greatness, some vault (not at the level of their predecessors), Paris Peoples, Jada Baylark, Kethlin Campbell, Morgan Burks-Magee, and the young hurdlers come on and we might be in the hunt already.   Really excited even with the loss of so many all-time greats.

"Arkansas (Lady Razorbacks) totaled a nation-leading 17 All-America honors for the 2019-20 NCAA Indoor track and field season among the recognition presented by United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The Razorbacks had 11 athletes collect a leading total of 17 All-America honors based on who qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships, which were scheduled to be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in March. However, the NCAA canceled the meet a day prior to its start date due to concerns with the spread of the coronavirus.

Combined, the Razorback men and women totaled 31 honors, producing the leading total over LSU (29), Oregon (25), Florida (22), Kentucky (20) and Texas A&M (20)....

A pair of Razorbacks – Katie Izzo and Carina Viljoen – earned three All-America honors each for the 2020 indoor season. Izzo received the honors for qualifying in the 3,000m, 5,000m and distance medley relay while Viljoen earned the honor for qualifying in the 1,500m, 3,000m and distance medley relay.
Receiving a pair of honors each were Morgan Burks-Magee (4×400, distance medley) and Krissy Gear (1,500m, distance medley).
Individual All-America honors were awarded to Devin Clark (5,000m), G'Auna Edwards (long jump), Rosey Effiong (4×400), Lauren Martinez (pole vault), Bailee McCorkle (pole vault), Paris Peoples (4×400), and Tiana Wilson (4×400)."
