See last page of Junction City thread.
It was in the paper this morning that Strickland resigned his coaching duties.
Will this be good for Smorphlet or bite them in the butt?
I can't see how it's ever a good thing to run a successful coach out of a job.... but who knows... there may be more to the story than is being told.

FWIW, here's how it was worded in the EDNT:
"Strickland resigns as coach at Smackover
SMACKOVER - The Smackover School Board accepted a partial resignation from head football coach Brian Strickland on Monday.
Strickland will remain with the school district as a teacher."
Surely there is more to this story?
Resign or be reassigned...I'm sure the choice was his.

So what happened at Smackover with the coach?
So does Stegall get the HC nod, giving the 8 and Union County two head coaches that are both graduates and former players of Junction City?
They would give it to cranford before they would stegall
I hope they choose a good guy, good coach. I'm just curious why the other coach is out? Does nobody know?
Lets be real....... he got reassigned because everyone thought they should win a state championship and they didnt so they blame the coach. Smackover problem is they hire superintendents but dont let them run the school. The community runs that school. Not board members. aka...........POLITICS
Smackover will be taking applications for the job outside of the school. There won't be any promotions from within as far as I know.

To paraphrase ol' Slick Willie, it depends on what the definition of hire is.
If operating as designed, the only school position a school board chooses is that of Superintendent.
The board does have the responsibility to review and vote on the school administration's choices for filing vacancies in other school positions.

I agree. A Board should put a great deal of weight in any coaching hire recommendation that came from a committee consisting of the Superintendent, the AD and possibly a principal.
Super should make the recommendation and the board approves.
I wondering why the other coach is gone.

Coach Steele is defensive coordinator. Osborn is the OC.
I thought the board could only approve or reject the recommendation of a superintendent. Thus the only one they can hire or fire is the super.

Doesn't matter how many candidates there are, if they're selecting the one recommended by the committee.....as they should, otherwise there's not reason for a committee.....especially when those on the committee have more knowledge about the game and ability than the entire school board combined.
I don't think that matters, the committee doesn't hire or fire and I doubt they or at least most of them work for the district. The committee like the board can recommend or vote to approve a recommendation but the super will have to formally recommend to the board and they will have to approve. If they make some show of a committee recommendation it still hinges on the super, who runs the school. School rules are not random.

An AD Head Football coach is an entirely different subject when you talk about hiring. It's not just everyone and their grandmother on the committee when it comes to that stuff. You can bet on the superintendent and the school board having a major say in that hire.
Why is this not an AD/HFC job?
I'm with you Pat, this should be an AD/HFC job. Especially with the low pay scale that Smackover has. Gives them a chance to go get someone good.

Underachieved in most people's eyes.
Three years ago he had a QB who is playing at Arkansas baptist.
A WR who is now playing for the Hogs.
A RB/LB who is now playing for SAU.
Several other seniors who had been together since peewee and had only lost 3 games since they were together.
2012. Smackover was up 14-0 over eventual Champion Harding. Lost 21-14 and was the only team to give Harding a scare that year. Smackover was the 5th seed that year.
2013. Got to the semi-finals with a loaded sophmore group. I believe they shared the conference that year. Ended up getting mercy ruled by Glen Rose in Benton harmony grove field. 54-21. I believe.
2014. Mercy ruled almost everyone they played. Got to the championship game. Where they lost a very hard fought game to charleston.
2015. Got to the semi finals again and looked to make it into the championship game for the second year in a row. Loaded senior high team. There was 12 seniors that year. Changed the game from Smackover field; claims were made that the field was "unsafe", to el dorado highschool field and ended up losing to Runner-up Rivercrest by 2 points.
2016. Lots of sophmores and Juniors. Throughout the year. Lost a lot of games we shouldn't have. We knew it was going to be a down year. Got to the first round of the playoffs as a 3 seed. Ended up losing to charleston 8-0. The only team to hold charleston to that low of a score until Prescott put a beat down on them in the finals.
Loss to charleston 8-0 played them better than anyone did all year except Prescott and underachieved? Not sure where that logic comes from. When smack lost to charleston in the championship game it came down to a couple of plays. Luck was involved and it was not on smacks side that night.

The rivercrest game is the only one in question but that wouldn't be the case if the players would've listened to their coaches screaming when they left a guy wide open on a fake PAT and not turned the ball over 3 times all things the coaches can't control but that happens when egos get out of control
Turnovers and don't forget the perfectly defended pass for a touchdown in that game that was luckily caught off the tip. If only those kids would have been coached to play that better... come on. The first touchdown was a blown coverage that I'm sure the coaches never practiced. Y'all can blame whoever you want. The truth is THE COACH CAN ONLY PREPARE THE KIDS. He can't go play it for them. A team that wasn't prepared would have got blown out against charleston in the championship, charleston this year, and river crest last year. They were prepared.
Agreed
Boy that's some tough accusations. Sounds like they were doing pretty well, just didn't win a championship and so some people got mad.
Now, let's make this clear. I am NOT the one saying he underachieved. I actually liked Coach. I put down all the reasons of what people have said and complained as to why he supposedly "underachieved." Someone asked why he was let go of his duties. So I complied a list of all the reasons people believe he should be removed of his duties to be the Coach.
And I didn't mean Arkansas Baptist. I meant UCA. Thanks for that correction.
From what I have read on here I would say it seems like more than he just didn't win enough. I'm not sure how many years Strickland has been at Smackover but his record is pretty darn good. No he didn't win a championship but if you fire all the coaches in Arkansas that didn't win a championship there will not be many coaches left. Even if you fire the ones who didn't win when they were expected too, there will be some coaches without jobs.
Problem is that people don't really know sometimes. I bet the coach made the wrong guy mad and that's where the problem started. Just seems to be more than losing.
Technically, he wasn't fired. He resigned as the head coach. I liked Strickland. He was good with the kids. I've heard his speeches to the kids and he treated every single one of them fairly. He held the kids accountable for their own mistakes and choices. There was plenty of times a kid done something wrong and he could have made the situation worse. But, he took care of it professionally. The kids were always first over a win in his eyes.
I hope we get a home run hire that does the same thing.

That's not surprisng for a school that has had recent deep playoff runs (and maybe even those that haven't). I'd guess an applicant over/under at 30 or so with maybe 30%-40% from adjacent states and 10%-20% from out of the Arkansas/adjacent-state area.
The committee's trick will be to determine how many of those are viable applicants. How many might stay for more than just a few seasons? How many will like the area and adapt to the culture? How many will be willing to take on the additional duties usually required of a small school head coach?

Depends on what you mean by rank. Talent is still here. A lot of success the last 4-5 years. Haven't won the big one. If you are judging off of talent, then it is pretty high. Off of wins in the last few years pretty high. Off of championships then not to high.

Not undefeated throughout peewee or junior high. They are just a very good group that work together as a team. Everyone will see for theirselves. Just got to find the right man for the job.

Wow. That's an awfully low number. Must be why coaches from Texas and Oklahoma are applying for the position. 🙄
Are they head coaches now in Texas and Oklahoma? One has to wonder why they would move to South Arkansas?
refer to Lake Hamilton and Fayeteville when hiring coaches from Texas and Ok.

It's simple... I've been asked to not say anything about whom the hire is because it's not made public. Take that however you may. It's really not that hard to comprehend. You'll know Monday night who the new coach is.

It would probably be more efficient if you "quote" the person you are actually responding to. Rather than just post a comment. Maybe then I would have been able to realize who you were talking to, ''moron."

From what I've read he was not the head coach.
Took long enough to announce it. Old man he might not have been the head coach there but he is one now. We will see what he can do now with the buckaroos.
I would have thought Smorphlet was a good enough program to hire a proven head coach.

Time will tell if he can match the record of the guy y'all fired.
He wasn't fired, he resigned. Since he stayed in Smackover for over 5 years I doubt the new guy matches his record. Losing someone that is loyal to the program and had a pretty good track record might be tougher than some people realize.

I don't believe he will match his record no matter how good he is because the talent Strickland had will probably never come through Smackover again.

Forced resignment is the same thing as being fired. Of course the newspaper isn't going to put in there that kind of information.
He's still at the school teaching. He is searching for further employment as a coach else where for the time being.
Not gonna make a move until his wife can get a position at the same school
Since the new coach is from Liberty eylou. I guess that makes kojack look like he knew what he was talking about with that liberty statement earlier.

As of yesterday, he was still sedated so they could try to reduce the swelling in his skull. He does have a skull fracture but it's not compressed.

I was asking about a baseball player who was in a single vehicle accident leaving a ball game earlier this week.
This was on Facebook:
"Smackover Baseball
April 3 at 9:29pm ยท
Our baseball family needs serious prayers right now! We had one of our own in a wreck after the game tonight."This was in a church prayer request email I received 4/4/17 @ 12:38 PM :
"Brayden McKinnon was in a bad car wreck last night. He is a high school baseball player in Smackover. He is 17 years old and his birthday was yesterday. He is at Children's Hospital. He doesn't appear to have any internal injuries but they are concerned about the head injury. He has been unconscious since it happened. They are keeping him heavily sedated and on a ventilator for at least 5 days to help his brain heal and to hopefully keep his brain from swelling.
He needs lots and lots of prayers."
Prayers.
Prayers for that young man.
Prayers for him and his family.
Prayers up
Prayers from 4dyce
We appreciate all the prayers. I will keep updates on the situation as I can.
Not football related but we need more prayers for smackover.
Freshman Baylor was hit in the face last night with a ball and shattered his nose and cheek bone.
