The New Normal  is come in to towns under 2,000 , get tax breaks run Mom and Pop out of business,  Close store get a tax writeoff and now they will have drive 10-30 miles to get what they need.

What tax breaks? They typically have to jump through more hoops than most.

Worlds largest retailer comes to town with a big song & dance, I believe the biggest hoop to jump through is finding someone to give up the property. After that it's "we'll give you whatever you want."  It's hard to find a corporation these days that cares about people, it's all about the bottom dollar. I know it's a business & your in business to make money, but corporate America is notorious for spelling "team" with an "I".

I find it interesting most of the walmart stores that are closing were in the northwest part of the state.

Could be the first the of process for Walmart HQ to head to Texas.

You do troll hard, lol. I think the fact that they have one every 1 1/2 up there is the reasoning behind it. As long as there is a Walton child alive, they won't be moving the HQ, and you can take that to the bank!!

Oh, I agree, I'm not saying they don't get tax breaks, but no more than any other large company.

No doubt, lots of corporations get tax breaks. If you don't believe it, read yesterday's and today's ADG with the list of companies that received over $3m up to $125m. Some weren't required to produce any additional jobs.

Greenwood is 9 miles or so away from Fort Smith...they are keeping their doors open. There is a Mom and Pop (CVs Grocery Store) in Greenwood as well that competes very well with Wal-Mart.

We've got 4 in Jonesboro, two Supercenters and two Neighborhood Markets. There isn't 5 miles between the Supers, and the NM's are within 2-2 1/2 miles from the Supers.

I had one of those. Actually, I never had a bag phone, but had the same phone that had a floor mount. When Verizon looks up my contract date and notices I've been with them since 1990, they ask why, haha. The carrier has changed 3 times, bought out, but with them that long.

I used to get all of my groceries online. Steaks/pork/chicken from the butcher in Publix, vegetables, all of it.
We had Publix coming into Memphis a few years ago and some how Kroger kept it from happening. Publix is the bomb.

Publix is the best chain I have ever come across. I loved that place when I lived in Florida.

Corporate greed at its finest. I was informed about 8 this morning, it doesn't make much sense to me. It seemed to me the 5 stores around this area were doing quite well.

No. The liberal agenda at its finest. Just had to have the minimum wage increases to a rate that a corporation will have trouble paying people for. And this is the result.

I agree and disagree with both of you. This has nothing to do with minimum wage. Wal-Mart ran what they wanted out of business and they're happy now. Why would they be expanding in other areas of the company if that was it? All that said people need to quit complaining and either move to a larger town or drive 10 miles which is nothing. It isn't Wal-Mart's job to pamper to every little town in the nation. Ultimately people made the decision for the little mom and pops when they decided to shop at Wal-Mart instead. Don't hate the player. Hate the game. Wal-Mart is doing what any corporation would do with the chance in the system we live in.

You'll have to excuse me if I don't believe a word you type, just like you aren't "Delta" on HV, lol. The property tax abatements would have had to be voted on by either the city or county governments, it's public record, so it would have been in the local paper. So, you like to walk or ride a bike to your nearest Wal-Mart. =)

I also don't like standing in line for 30 min. to get checked out.

Half the 30 WMT stores in NWA will have this by Monday.

It's a pain for vendors that deliver and stock food.

About 6 stores started it last December.  They've all done so well they are expanding.

The NBH MKT on Crossover in Fay(close to me) is the #1 small format store and ranks 10th overall in online order volume.  It's become a big deal.

Wasn't a grocery chain, but a deal like Meal on the Fly, that I used to have pick up, and deliver my groceries in Tampa. Cost like $10 on top of the cost of the groceries.

That was super nice when events were going on in town, and it was a major pain to get out and do anything.

No on delivery at this point.

But there are so many WMTs in NWA now that it would boggle the mind.

I could see this being the case for a short time (while adjusting to new / different sales levels) but after a period of adjustment, I would expect these vendors to adjust as well.  Is it a traffic problem?
