I am starting a new thread for people to post about trips they have recently been on or future/past ones. It can be as simple as a new town in Arkansas you are going through or going to another country..... as well as obviously new states and new cities you visited. I enjoy hearing about other people's experiences of seeing something new.
I guess I will get it started.... this last 6 months have been the most probably in a long time as far as traveling for me. And all in a car I might had. I am an old school road trip guy ( I sleep in a tent or my car 80% of the time. IT SAVES MONEY GALORE). In February, I went up to Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota. The far west of south Dakota is truly a gem. The Badlands, Black Hills, and Rapid City are a real treat. Montana and Wyoming are incredible. I absolutely love seeing all that free and untouched land out there. When I came back in May for a visit I made my way all the way down to Tampa/Saint Pete. Clearwater Beach truly is great. On the way back I came through SE Arkansas. I always love that drive through Lake Village on Hwy 65. I spent my first winter living in Colorado. I was really nervous about winter here but ended up loving it. I won't lie. The three blasts we had of -10 degrees were horrible but all in all I loved the winter.
.....Anybody else see some new places recently or have a trip planned coming up?

Didn't do hardly any traveling growing up....So trying to spoil my kids to it...
Anyway, went to the st Louis zoo in May....best zoo of the five I've been to, and it's FREE! Took the long way up 67....And Lord I don't think I could live in east arkansas....
Spent last weekend in tulsa...the kids loved the aquarium, which made the 60 bucks I spent to get in sting a little bit less
I want to go to the Saint Louis Zoo so bad. My girlfriend told me its so big its hard to get through the whole thing in one lump. And I almost didn't believe her when she told me it was free. If I ever have kids I am definitely going to have to invest in one of those "Friends of the Zoo" passes wherever I live for a yearly pass. When I swung through the state I wanted to see the new Bass Pro in Memphis. I have seen pictures of friends that went and it looks incredible. That thing is going to be a mad house before this years hunting season.

Fifteen bucks to park in their lot...but forrest park is close by and had lots of free parking.... we were there for 8 hours and didn't see everything.. I've been to ft worth, tulsa, Springfield mo, and littke tick zoos...st louis is by far the best.
Spent 30 days in Greece and 15 days in Florida this summer.

The bass pro shop in Memphis hit a million visitors 3 weeks back. Crazy......... They sold $250,000 worth of fudge after 3 weeks of being open.
Went to Indy for MotoGP a couple weekends ago. It was awesome as usual. Going down to Austin fot Formula 1 in a couple months. Next month is the Distinguished Gentleman's ride. It's a worldwide thing, but doing Lauderdale this year. It's a prostate cancer fundraiser. Everybody gets dressed to the nines. Bowties, fancy everything, and goes for a cruise. Big 100,000+ people vintage motorcycle festival in Oct in Birmingham. And somewhere in there, a trip to Vegas.
I went to Gatlinburg stayed at the top of the smokey mountains overlooking pigeon forge good views and ole smokey moonshine is the best imo
Good stuff guys... I have been to all these cities/states you guys have so far talked about but never been to Greece obviously! It must have been a little strange being there this summer under the political circumstances.
I forgot I went to Dallas-Fort Worth for the second time ever this summer. I figured I would have been there more in my life growing up in Arkansas. I really liked visiting but its too much of a sprawl there to ever think about living. Denver really won me over. Its a big place but not exploding. You can get around pretty easy. DFW is too much at peak times for me.
It was a little weird. We were out before everything fell apart, but we definitely saw some of the effects. There were wings of certain museums that weren't open because the museum couldn't afford to pay security guards
I haven't been to Denver in ages. Girl I am seeing was stationed there back in 08. We've been talking about making a trip out soon. I have some friends on the Rockies, she has military friends there. Would make a good trip.
I have immensely enjoyed my two trips to Pagosa Springs Colorado (the hiking and scenery were relaxing and inspiring). I'd move, relocate, retire there tomorrow if I could. I would like to see other areas of the west too.
When I was young, all of our trips were always to see relatives and I remember how I hated that. Since we had kids, we've always tried to vacation to new places and see new things.

Pagosa Springs really is amazing. I got to visit my buddy in Durango and go through Pagosa this last winter and see the 4 corners area. In Arkansas, I want to go to Murfreesboro for the diamonds and trek back up 27 or 7 to then go to the Buffalo between Ponca and Jasper and see Whitaker Point in that area. I grew up so close and never went. When I came back this summer I will say one thing, the mountains are so amazing out west but when I got back to the Ozarks I absolutely have to say I miss the green so much. I never realized how much I took the lush green of the Ozark National Forest for granted and the late October/early November mass color change.

If you go to murfreesboro, drive down 27 it's a nice drive through the ouachitas and as you know brings you right into dardanelle, conveniently on highway 7...
The diamond mine was pretty cool. But..Whitaker point, I know the name but can't picture it right now...
My family always vacationed growing up and I've set several travel goals
Short-term:
Visit all 50 states (42 complete)
Visit parks for all 30 MLB teams (21 complete)
Visit all 408 national park units (151 complete)
Long-term:
Visit all 196 countries (4 complete)
Visit all 1058 World Heritage Sites (27 complete)
I understand that the long-term goals may not be as easily attainable, but hey you have to have goals. I'm only 20, so I'll have a chance
No sense in setting easy to obtain goals, for any aspect of life.
On the topic, I'm off to Davenport, Iowa tonight for a bike show, then to Springfield, IL Sunday for a AMA flat track race at the Springfield Mile. Motorcycles doing 160+mph on dirt. I've been thinking about getting in to AHRMA racing, but flat track looks like a lot more fun.

Seven, I'm seriously thinking about hanging out on a ranch near Pagosa next summer. A friend leases a cabin and house, for 12 weeks, takes their horses up for the summer. The deck of that cabin hangs over one of those trout creeks. They post a lot of great pics riding the horses up in the mountains.
During the summer of 2014, my wife (then fiance) and I took a trip out West. Went through Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico (stopped at Walter White's* house in Albuquerque), Arizona (Grand Canyon), and finally, Las Vegas, Nevada.
Stayed in Vegas for a few days, then drove back through Utah and the Rockies in Colorado. Then kept going through Kansas before returning home.
This past summer (2015), my wife and I went East. Through Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida (went down to Miami, then visited the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando). Came back through Georgia and visited the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
Loved both of the trips. I love driving over flying by a long shot. I love being able to see the scenic views from the car rather than from above. The only downside to both trips were paying the tolls on the Kansas Turnpike and the Ronald Reagan Turnpike (in Florida).

I absolutely love the Rockies, been all over them from Canada to New Mexico. However I've seen mountains I can't hardly describe. Rockies on steroids. Wrangles, Kenai's, Talkeetna's, Chugach's, Brook's, & Alaskan Range. Flying is the only way to travel. lol
Rockies are awesome. But, Alaska's where it's at. I remember the first time I flew close to Denali (formerly Mt. McKinley). It was about 1 a.m., still daylight, kind of hazy. Just amazing.
Alaska is one of the states I'm missing. I'll need to be fairly wealthy before I go there because several of the national parks there require a fly-in on a bush plane
Yeah, that gets pricey. I was fortunate my host family up there owned one. I could have never afforded that back then. Your first water landing, it's terrifying.

I envy you if you can make this happen, Valley. What an excellent way to spend a summer - the San Juan River is heaven. Best of luck to you on this endeavor, and if it occurs, please share some photos!
If we go back to Colorado next summer, we are thinking of staying in another part of the start just to experience something new. It looks like all of Colorado is an outdoor paradise but it will be hard to beat Pagosa Springs.

I used to live in Lino Lakes, MN and one of the major seaplane bases for Canadian fly in vacations is located there. They make the take offs and landings look so easy - even if they are not.
My first sighting of a water strip was at the Fairbanks airport. They have a water strip at a major airport. It looked cool, until I did it.

Not sure which, but one of those will happen.

Went home to Clarendon this summer but with my kids summer schedule we were only there 3 days. picked up some pickled okra and enjoyed sitting on the new Porch dad build last year. He got 4 ceiling fans installed to keep the skeeters at bay.
Drove from DFW to Clarendon to see the parents for Christmas the 28-30th Saw on cop on the way there and only 3 on the way back . One thing for sure with it being a 7 hour + drive and a 950 mile round trip I am getting too old to do this much anymore. Buc'ees is a great place to stop on I -20 in Terrell Texas it just opened after Thanksgiving 2015.
First time I've come across this thread. I don't get to travel nearly as much as I would like but have been a few places that I thought were really cool.
Honolulu, Hawaii (Played some baseball there one summer. If you ever get a chance to go to Hawaii, do it but don't stay for long. Started to feel really claustrophobic realizing I was surrounded by thousands of miles of ocean in every direction)
Dillon, Colorado (Family vacation this past summer. Colorado is a gorgeous place)
St. Augustine, Florida (Wife and I went on our honeymoon there)
Phoenix & Show Low Arizona (The drive from northeast Arkansas to Arizona is pretty cool. Go from the green of Arkansas to the flat dust of Texas then the sands of New Mexico and Arizona. The painted desert is awesome. You see a lot of changes in scenery along the way. Show Low lake is on top of a mountain in Arizona. Had to wear a coat every night and get a fire going)
Ah, new year, new travel itinerary. Starting off this month with Daytona and Miami. Next month is OKC and North Carolina, the following month, Dallas, and Daytona again for Bike Week. Then Chicago, Dallas, Milwaukee, Elkhart Lake, Austin, Bonneville, Hilton Head, Birmingham, Indianapolis, Miami again, Durham, and quite a few others I can't think of for the year. And the typical few trips to FL that are non work related.
Looking forward this spring to making a route66 road trip. Leaving Texarkana and driving to Claremore, Okla then heading West. Going to stop in Oklahoma City and go back to the National WesternHeritageMuseum. Thats one awesome place. Leaving there heading west on I40/66 stopping at a few Route 66 museums and planning on spending the night in Amarillo and eating at the Big Texan Steakhouse. Heading toward Raton the next morning and then head West ending up in Chama, NM and ridingthe steam train to Antonito, Co and bus back to Chama. Heading towards Albuquerque the next day. Plan stopping in Taos and Santa Fe on the way. Going to see Old Town in Albuquerque and then head home. Then plan for a fall vacation towards the East coast. Probably going to need to hit the lottery somewhere in between

. When you go to Smoky Mountain NP be sure and take the 11 mile loop called Cades Cove. A really beautiful one way drive at a slow pace. Get here at daybreak and you will see a lot of Deer, Turkeys, an occasional Eagle and possibly see a Black Bear. Just spent a week in Memphis on a mission trip, but I did a couple things in town. I started at the Liberty Bowl before meeting with my group, and that was fun. I met up with my group and we went to work. In between we went to the National Civil Rights Museum as well as Central BBQ. I went and had coffee with a couple friends at City & State which was wonderful. I also went to brunch with friends at a place called Brother Juniper's
My dad lives about 30 minutes from Clemson, SC. I ended up going to stay a week with him this fall and got to catch the FSU/Clemson game, it was the loudest football game I have ever experienced live, hands down. I spent the rest of the time driving around in the Blue Ridge Mountains, some really pretty scenery in those parts.

I love that area where Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, and South Carolina all generally come together. The Ozarks and Ouachitas are great but that area has north Arkansas beat. Central North Carolina where Raleigh, Durham, Winston-Salem, and Chapel Hill are would be a cool place to live. In the summer after your work week you pick your weekend getaway. Head west to the mountains or east to the outer banks on the coast for the beach.

This isn't really a "travel" post, but I figured I could ask it here and get some pretty good responses.
My grandparents have a 2005 Ford King Ranch (I think F-350). Only about 41,000 miles, dual-wheels on the rear, and they used it for mainly vacations and pulling their RV. They've since sold their RV and want to (eventually) give me their truck.
That being said, I have been in the market for a truck, but I am not too keen on that particular truck. I might come around to it, but if I don't what should I look for as a trade-in option or something along those lines? I am not brand specific, but I would like something with four doors, plenty of bed room for loading, and reasonable gas mileage.

Dodge has a new 1500 out with a diesel. That'said going to be tough to beat. F-150 EcoBoost. I love my Tacoma, hate how small the bed is.

I traveled with my family to Kansas and Nebraska over spring break. Saw 5 national park units in Kansas, 1 national park unit in Nebraska, 2 state capitols, 4 college campuses, and a Frank Lloyd Wright building.

The 6.0 in that truck, is the worst engine Ford ever made. Notoriously bad.
I've seen those trucks, lots of which were forestry company owners, drive and use those things for many many years. It may be bad, but it still has some longevity.
My RAM has some power. IF I buy another truck, I'm thinking about a Tundra.

Enjoy it! May is actually the best time to head to Florida. The rainy season hasn't quite started and the water is just starting to get warm enough for the average person to really enjoy it. Plus its 85-90 and not 90-95 blistering heat! Great choice right now!! The trip is so reasonable from LR or southern Arkansas.

we made a trip to pigeon forge a few weeks back and on the way back stopped in Kentucky at the race track and went on to Indiana it was a good trip its some beautiful country

Those all look incredible and a wonderful, happy family too. This will be the first time I step out of the U.S. but your trips here sound right up my alley. I am all about seeing the National Parks too! I did that southwest trip almost exactly park for park!

My dad was all about adventure. We spent summers traveling Arkansas. He would pull an old jeep behind us. Many times he would stop on a shoulder. We would pile into the jeep and go offroading (would be illegal today). He passed that trait to me!

If you ever get the chance to go to Igaucu Falls in Brazil it is worth it because it puts even Niagra Falls below its feet. It could easily be toured in about 2 to 3 hours, but we stayed all 9 hours the park was open because it was that amazing. I spent time in four countries in total and had the time of my life and got engaged to the woman I have been with for 7 years. I don't know how many of you have been on mission trips or something of that nature to nations with much less we are born into( I am mainly speaking of my 5 days in Paraguay), but I feel so lucky to live in this wonderful nation. I had a blast however and plan on going back next year to visit my friend again who lives down there. That was a special trip that changed my life I believe.

I was hoping those showed up. It is crazy but I had never heard of Iguacu Falls until my buddy moved down there. Four of the pictures are from there. One is from Asuncion and another of Ciudad del Este in Paraguay. The stadium is "Estadio Defensores del Chaco" where Paraguay plays its home games in national team games. And those little creatures are called coati. They are relentless and everywhere at that park and rummaged through many peoples' lunches they had packed and carrying around. I guess they went for the low dangling fruit.

The Mrs & I went there a few years back for our anniversary. I wasn't impressed with anything there, I'd say the only thing to do is drive through, but that would mean you got lost going somewhere else.

I have even wanted to see the Passion Play as arts and theater have always been an interest for me. I think its an Arkansas must do and people all around the country have heard about it. If you go you will have to let us know how good it was.

I just found this thread and figured I'd share a little. Went to the beach just a couple of weeks ago. Nothing crazy happened there, got a jellyfish tentacle wrapped around my wrist and then proceeded to rub it off on my face right beside my eye (wonderful beach trip, right?). This Christmas break, I'm taking a trip to Italy to see someone special. Really hoping that trip works out. And next summer I should be hitting Germany for about a week and then the beach. Lots of cool stuff brewing in the life of B&G. I'll post pictures if you guys want me to (of Italy and Germany).

I would do anything to live near the beach again.... Not even right on the coast, but just even a few hours so I could make a trip 2 or 3 times a year for a three day weekend or something like that.
I will be in Dallas for a few days in the beginning of August. Talk about a terrible time to head down there. I imagine it will be between 100-103 degrees those days if it is typical Dallas dog days of summer weather. The DFW metroplex has slowly grown on me through the years though.

we usually make 2 or 3 trips a year to the beach

With work I haven't been able to travel this summer, so I went up to STL last weekend and caught a couple Cardinals games. I also saw the Cardinals Museum on Saturday

Went to Eureka Springs last weekend.....the usual walk through the old downtown, the passion play(go see it, even with the canned lines and music Id give it a 8 out of 10, imo)...and a morning walk at blue springs heritage center..

That's a lot of 4-roll.
The little red is always ice cold. Last year it was moving too fast to jump in. The drive to Eureka is scenic.
I have been mostly in the Plano and Frisco areas of Dallas the last two days and those two areas are so nice. The heat has been cranking up, but not as bad as it is sometimes in early August. I got up at 6:10 the last two mornings for a run that went by a high school and their athletic facilities are unreal for high school. We all already knew that about Texas.

I randomly have been through the northern panhandle of Texas quite a bit even though there isn't anything out there but oil country. I enjoy taking that way the times I have gone back and forth from Colorado and Arkansas. It's not as fast at all to go back to NWA but I prefer going through the panhandle to northern New Mexico at the Raton Pass on the Colorado border. It's better to the eyes than driving through Kansas on I-70 which sucks. I have become familiar with those towns north of Amarillo like Dumas and Dalhart. I always hit Amarillo and head north/northwest. I like that panhandle because you start seeing the geography transition slowly.

When we were broke and would go skiing in Aspen for a couple of weeks fresh out of college, we would occasionally go that way because we had already counted the 8 trees crossing Kansas. It was a change of scenery, but was pretty boring from Amarillo to NEA on I-40.

we did a 3200+ mile road trip a couple of weeks ago. went up through nebraska and iowa to south dakota. went to DeSmet to the laura ingalls wilder homestead, to crazy horse, to deadwood, to mount rushmore, to cheyenne, wyoming, to golden, colorado, to santa fe, nm, then home. wonderful trip and great weather. however, just out of amarillo, we came across a feed lot for cattle. more cows in one place than i have ever seen in my life. thousands. stuck like nobody's business. nasty. and just fyi....texas is boring to drive across. saw license plates from 48 different states, canadian provinces and mexico. great trip and didn't want to come home.

I had never heard of it, but just looked at some photos online and that looks amazing. It has a very similar look to Zion in Utah as far as the color of the landscape. Also, the map shows its pretty easy to get to off the interstate. Not too far south of I-40 and right off I-27 even closer. I am definitely going to go next time there because that is so unique to the rest of the area. This is the reason I made this topic. We all might become aware of things we had never heard of and it makes for great ideas for everyone on here.

You always on vacation like me haha? Well I kind of like to lump mine close together like that too with my vacations from work. Some employers aren't a fan of that but mine doesn't care and that is what I prefer. Did you by chance do the ferry from Fort Morgan to Dauphin Island or run into anybody there that was? I always wanted to do that when in the Pensacola area for a day trip but never got around to it. If anyone is ever in the Biloxi/Gulfport area in Mississippi for vacation and a history guy then you can hit the ferry to Ship Island which was an old prison they used in multiple wars throughout our history.

Ha. We take two vacations a year.
1. The Mrs and I go on an anniversary trip.
2. A family trip with my family at the condo in fort Morgan.
We drove down the day we got down here while waiting on my folks. It was a neat place. But we didn't stop and we didn't do the ferry. I think it would be neat.
I love vacations if you haven't noticed haha

I didn't get a chance to hike, but we watched the musical that's put on in the canyon, looked like a beautiful place to spend a weekend....about 15 minutes off the interstate to boot.
Just went to Cancun for the first time this summer. Incredible experience. Stayed at Moon Palace Resort, which was all inclusive. Great food, great service, and good rooms. Got to play golf 4 or 5 times on two beautiful golf courses on the resort, desgined by Jack Nicklaus. Also went on a big ziplining course, rode ATV's through their "jungle" course, and went scuba diving around a barrier reef. Highly recommend anyone going at least once. Had an absolute blast

When I flew back from South America in early July we flew over Cancun and my mouth dropped staring at the water beneath me..... nothing but crystal clear water for hundreds of yards offshore. We could see the schools of fish from 30,000 feet the water was so clear. When I saw that sight I looked at my fiancé and said we will be going there one day. We are contemplating going in December when she is on Christmas Break. However, to do so means we will be roughing it. We plan on staying in a cheap hostel, and I have seen flights for dirt cheap there so I am going to make it a cheap trip or I will have to wait a while to go. After seeing that sight from the plane my mind wants to go there ASAP. I know why everyone wants to go there now.
If you get the chance hit the GB Jr Museum in Dallas on the SMU Campus. Just clean out your tools they are Airport like on knifes etc.

The water was crystal clear, you're right about that. The visibility under water was unbelievable. Will definitely be going back in the near future.
Just returned from my two week AT (also happened to be Phase III of OCS - ready to pin on that butter bar now) at JBLM in Washington state. It was my first time to the PAC NW. I was sold. Great weather, wonderful trees, and a great shot of Mt. Rainier.
I was born in the South and will die in the South. But if anyone is looking for a place to travel, Washington state was beautiful.
All of the Pacific Northwest is that way. Oregon, Washington, Northern Cali, etc. Gorgeous up there. Gives Appalachia a run for its money for sure.
Just got back for a short three day visit at Pensacola.the beach was beautiful not to crowded just peaceful and as AW would say enjoyed those adult beverages

I would even get in the water when I lived in Pensacola on warm days until the second week of December.... then I couldn't get in the water again until the last week of March. Most people its mid April to late October is all they can handle then the water is too cold for them there. I'll swim in the water until it dips below 67 or 68 degrees. The shock of when you first get in is something else though when its that cold.

Going for some high altitude training this weekend over Christmas in Winter Park, Colorado..... Hope I make it out alive. Hills are terrible when you haven't adjusted to that high of altitude.
Looks like I'll be taking my first trip to Washington DC next Summer.

For once, we are building in plenty of free time. We'll watch the Braves Tue, Wed and Thur but will be there for days before and after if all goes well.

I'm wanting to plan a vacation for my wife and I as a graduation present. She graduates in May with her Master's degree and has mentioned several times that she wants to get away for a few days when she's done.
She likes the beach and shopping and I am more into the history of a place. We went to St. Augustine Florida on our honeymoon and it was a perfect mix of both. Are there any other places that offer the same kind of atmosphere?

You are in eastern AR right? Cause if you are this trip could be just a reasonable drive and might be just a little too far if in western Arkansas cause a place I found fascinating was when I went to Assateague Island National Seashore about 6 years ago which is where the shoreline of Maryland and Virginia meet so it's kind of a little hidden gem out there cause it is even a couple hours east of Washington D.C. and a little south across Chesapeake Bay. But that leads to D.C. which I imagine you may have already been and if you have probably are looking for something new if you have. I loved all the museum's and the historical sights in D.C. and without saying a woman can find any shopping in an metropolitan area like D.C. ... My fiance particularly loved Assateague Island NS because wild horses live there in the protected area and it was just such a rare sight to see. One concern is if you are looking for a May trip the water will still have quite a bit of chill at the beaches that far north unlike Florida. I went in August and it was perfect. The downside of going in August was my goodness was it hot walking around DC.That would be a negative if you went in May with the water temperature as well as probably 30 hours round trip of driving even from east AR. That traffic was brutal too in Washington DC

Sounds like a super cool place. I will definitely look into it. We are in Northeast Arkansas (Jonesboro). I have been to DC once but it was only for a day and I've wanted to go back ever since. I had thought about doing a DC trip but it's not really her cup of tea. Lol

Oh I definitely understand that. Being in east Arkansas will definitely give you more options being closer to the beaches than us NWA folks. Only good thing about NWA is I easily go to Colorado in one day(if I leave at 6am I am there by 4:30pm with the time change aid). I have always been jealous of the east and south AR people has you all can go to the Gulf/Florida so easily. Hope you two find a good trip.

I appreciate it. Ever been to Charleston, SC? It keeps popping up in any searches I do. Looks like a pretty cool place but I've never been.

I have never been but that is funny you say that cause I have heard good things about there and Savannah, GA from any friends who have been and you are right would have some history aspects too. Both it and Charleston would be more quiet too. I always see those two on lists of "best places to live in the South"... so they have to be good to visit.
We are looking at going to New Orleans sometime this year if we can work it out.
Going to DC for sure.
Already hacked before I go as we booked out the direct flight we wanted from NWA to DC and a month later we get a flight change notice to connecting flight on the next day.

Question, what are some cool things to do in New Orleans besides the whole Bourbon street experience? Went for the New Orleans bowl last year (ASU) and had a blast but didn't get outside of Bourbon too often. Walked the French Quarter a couple times but definitely didn't get to see everything.
Anyone on here ever been to Iceland? I am taking time off for 2 weeks in June and I know I am going somewhere in Europe. The other plan is Spain/Morocco to get the continent's of Europe and Africa knocked off the list in one trip. I plan on booking the tickets in the next 2 weeks and am leaning to Iceland.

I do get a pretty good tan come June usually so I might not. Iceland wouldn't be a bad place to be stranded.... Morocco not so much. I will literally go there for one day only just to say I stept on the African continent if that is the route I so choose to go. Now that would not be as exciting to be stranded there.
The Bride having some more issues so we are staying home for Spring Break this year. We might take a day trip but that all up in the air right now.
So it is official.... Iceland here I come on May 28th. I am road tripping to Boston and flying from there. A buddy lives up there and I got an insanely cheap ticket out of Boston to Iceland. In early June I will be seeing 21 hours of sunlight a day in Iceland. That will mess with the perception of time for sure.

Haha, alright. I promise I will. I am pretty nervous about this trip cause last trip I did last summer I had someone with me at all times who spoke Spanish with me in Paraguay, Argentina, and Uruguay. I have never felt so lost in my life when we crossed the border in Brazil. We thought even though they speak Portuguese that plenty of people would know Spanish too in Brazil has a second language. We were so wrong there! I am nervous hoping a good amount of the young generation in Iceland knows English cause I listened to Icelandic today online and it just made me laugh it sounded so crazy!
Just got back from Fort Pickens beach for a few days of rest and relaxation. I believe I could pack up and live there so peaceful

I used to go fishing and swimming there so many times. That place is a gem and so nice. That would be a nice place to retire down there cause the cost of living is so reasonable. You can now own a home down there for cheaper than NW Arkansas. If I don't one day permanently move to the Western US one day then that Gulf area would be next in line. Such a good bargain for the beauty and still a very quiet life once you get north of Pensacola in some of those small towns.
We will be leaving tomorrow night for spring break to the Grand Canyon South Rim for a couple of days.We plan on visiting Hoover darn along with a few other stops before heading to Vegas for three days

A grear trip there and enjoy... I always love stopping in Flagstaff when in those parts.

They just should never get Paris France and Paris, AR mixed up. Two totally different experience there for the flight goers.

Just a few from Costa Rica..... I recommend it to everyone. We had Spanish speakers in our group, but you can get by speaking zero Spanish because it is so set up for tourists and I could not believe how much of their population spoke some English too and would start talking to us when they heard us speaking English. This was even the times we got away from the so called "touristy spots" too.

In a sense this is travel, but I am no longer an Arkansas resident, so that's kinda fun.
Just got in last night from a short trip from Pensacola most people I've ever seen there.
I have been in Iceland for the last two days.... if you can handle it 45 degrees and raining this time of year it brings unbelievable views here I will never see anywhere else. It never got completely dark last night so it has been hard to sleep much.

yea we really enjoyed the water it was really nice even though it was a short stay.
I am back from Iceland and it was even greater than expected.... What great people there and stunning nature. The bottom picture is when we flew over the ice sheet over Greenland as it transitioned to the coastal mountains as we came home. It took my breath away.

Absolutely beautiful places.... The panhandle beaches in Florida along with Alabama are tough to beat.

I spent 16 days traveling to the northeast. Saw 21 national park sites, 9 state capitols, and 6 baseball games (Pawtucket Red Sox, Boston Red Sox, Hyannis Harbor Hawks of the Cape Cod League, Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers, and Evansville Otters of the Frontier League).
Sounds like you had a great time. I did a 16-day northeast with wife and kids a few years back. No ball games but parks and such. Was awesome. Hope to go back. Which parks did you visit?

I enjoyed following your picture updates online and the almost same route you took as me on my trip 2 months prior.... Great family you have. Cape Cod is amazing up there. Hope you got plenty of chowder, clams, and more of the typical northeast cuisine like I did too along with everything else you did.

My favorite part of the northeast I saw in late May/early June was the Delaware Gap Recreational Area where PA, NJ, and upstate NY all come together. If I lived on the east coast megalopolis ever I could see myself using that place as a weekend getaway from the city all the time. My buddy in Boston also just goes up to VT, NH, or ME to get away from the city on the weekends all the time.
Agreed. Also, parts north and west of New York city are spectacular. The parks were awesome. My family loved coastal beaches as well (kids' favorites up there were in Maine and Connecticut).
I cannot get my pics to load. Kids had a blast collecting various creatures from the waters in beaches in Maine (we threw everything back!). Crabbing was a blast. Water was a bit colder than we were used to but we adjusted fine (just played in knee deep instead of swimming). My wife enjoyed the lighthouses and some intense rocky coastlines plus the homes on the beaches were absolutely spectacular.

I was the same with the water on the Cape... It was only early June so it was still freezing. I knew I wouldn't see the ocean for a while so I got in anyway knowing it may be forever until I see the ocean again. And yes some of those light houses in the northeast are stunning with the scenario around.
Thinking about it makes me want to go back.
Had a wonderful time at the coast. Great weather. Water temp was perfect.
Ended on a sad note though. Last night, two brothers ages 12 and 19 were lost in the current. Third child was found safe but the orange Beach PD, fire/rescue and other agencies including the coast guard out of New Orleans were called in to search. They went missing around 730 right after they checked in from Baton Rouge around 5pm. The helecopters flew over the ocean until about 130am while we were on the deck. Sonar etc. This morning they recovered the body of the 12 year old east of where they went missing and the coast guard dive team located the 19 year old near the same area on the ocean floor. Absolute tragedy. My heart hurt for the family. You cannot take the surf for granted. It was high risk tides yesterday. I made my daughter and dad get out because of it.

I just booked a flight to be spending Christmas on..... Miami Beach. I have been to every where in Florida except far South Florida. I have been to Pensacola, Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Tampa, and Orlando but needed to get Miami of the list. The water at Miami Beach looks to be just warm enough in the winter to enjoy it.

Speaking of Miami, I hate the heat and humidity but a few years ago we had the opportunity to visit Miami
in July and I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised at the climate there. Yes, it was hot but the ocean breezes made things tolerable. I know you're visiting in December and weather won't be a problem, but I did want to tell you the beaches were pretty nice all along the coast. There was a bit of seaweed rolling in but it wasn't too bad and the sand extended pretty far out so a person could wade out a good bit if they wanted to. We went with kids last time so we did a lot of things revolving around them, but I would look forward to a return trip to Miami to see more adult-oriented things.

Thank you for the info cause I have only been to the gulf side beaches in Florida when on the panhandle and in Saint Pete and not the Atlantic side beaches. I am pretty excited to see their beaches and the cruise down Hwy 1 through some of the Keys a little bit.

Might have some pics up in the next day or two as I just got back now and hope all of you had safe travels for those who were and still are on the road driving right now traveling.... I do have to say I know most of you have all probably been to Florida in the summer time, but I suggest a winter time trip as well. The best part of my trip was canoeing the Saint John's river north of Orlando because virtually crystal clear water springs branch off of the river and that is where the highest concentration of manatees are and they are more prominent in the winter when they hover near the surface all day unlike when they stay along river floor beds in the summer to stay cool. We got to see manatees up and close. They literally will follow you to the point where they use your canoe as a belly scratcher and want your attention. You aren't supposed to touch them, but those manatees would chase you down and want human attention.
Also, I have to say I was expecting a bad experience from Allegiant Air from the stories I have heard, but the flight there and back left on time if not a few minutes early. They really were well planned everywhere for the holiday travel.
As for the water on the beaches, it was not bad at all and nearly 75 degrees once you got down into the south Florida area. There were a lot of travelers from England there all joking with us that the water was warmer than in the summer on the south coast of England so we couldn't complain about the chilly winter water.
Orlando keeps growing on me as a city and my favorite out of the big 3 in Florida we went in Orlando, Tampa, and Miami. Great multicultural city with all the Disney money around to help improve the city as a whole. Really enjoyed the huge Brazilian population down in Orlando since I am a soccer fan. That city really loves its soccer team down there. I love Florida in the sense you can bounce from the 3 major cities so quickly when the traffic isn't a head ache. Traffic was great and just fine by Florida standards.

Anyone here ever did the hike to the Whitaker Point overlook just south of Ponca near the Buffalo River? I am thinking that is a must do soon being an Arkansas native. I get every other weekend off so I am thinking the first weekend I am off and I see the temperatures in the 80's I may head out that way and hike that plus spend some time at the Buffalo. That has to be one of the prettiest parts of Arkansas definitely.

It's worth the trip, parking is limited though

Lawrenceburg, KY- toured Wild Turkey distillery. Really cool.
Lexington, KY- Night racing at Churchill Downs. Loved it.
Memorial Day we did a quick hit to Boston and saw Braves play at Fenway. First time for me to Boston. While there the Eastern Conf finals Game 7 Cavs vs Celtics occurred and we splurged and overpaid for 2 rafter tickets. Well worth it.

Atlanta and Nashville are great cities..... And Lexington has a uniqueness to it that I enjoy the times I have traveled through. And the Boston part sounds like a sports lovers dream.

The beach sounds good right about now. I spent some time in Aspen about 2 weeks ago all the way down to northern New Mexico in the mountains. Lots of fires spread through out when I went. People are going wild in NW Arkansas about them finally putting a direct and cheap flight from XNA in Bentonville to Destin. I know some people who have already taken advantage.
Headed to Albuquerque and Santa Fe, NM from Sunday through Friday of the coming week..... Hope all the rest of you fearless folks have safe travels and a great Christmas with family and friends.
spending spring break in Destin.It was cool yesterday hi was only 53 and rain so the water was cold but better today the Hi is65 and the sun is shining.Hope everyone has a good spring break.

Nothing like the old Emerald Coast.... Will never get tired of going there myself.
Just got back from a week at Disney in Orlando it was fun but going to a different park every day gave me out. It was fun but with my MS the walking was tough on me but we had a great time with grand kids.

Took my kids there and did every park plus Universal way back when (9 days in Orlando area was great!). Just waiting on the grandkids to get older so we can return.

I know this is a quote from an older post, but, because of our experience this summer, I want to share. We hiked that trail this summer along with a few others in the area. The point is great but the waterfalls before it are spectacular if you time your hike after a good rain. Loved each of the hikes. Beautiful scenery once you reach it. Mostly just wooded areas for the first large percentage of the hikes. If it is open, Lost Valley Trail is nice too. Flooding in the past two years caused lots of damage so they were working on it this summer. So many trails in that area. Glory Hole is not too far away. Just pick a few each spring, fall, or summer and enjoy. But, be careful. When we arrived at Whitaker Point (Hawksbill Crag) parking area, a life flight helicopter was arriving to haul out a man about my age who had fallen from one of the waterfall bluffs. BE CAREFUL!!!!!!
Lost Valley is open...been there twice this summer. Along with Glory Hole and a few other waterfall hikes. Haven't been to Hawksbill this year...but been there before, and I was a nervous wreck with my kids .
I didn't know for sure. They had a sign across part of the road and dump trucks were going in and out the two days I drove the area. We just went to other trails instead those days. Glad it is good to go. One of my top 25 trails in Arkansas. It just seems to build as you go. After a nice rain is great in the spring. And, yes, I understand the nervous part. I taught my kids to respect but not fear such. Then they made me nervous when they just followed what I had taught them!!

We hiked two down in the Mena area. Can't remember the names.
Not sure if I hit 25 on this list or if they are all my top 25, but enjoyed each. Very scenic.

I've been blessed and lucky. My dad loved hiking and adventure (off reading in jeeps back in the day). My wife loves most everything about hiking and the outdoors. My daughters chose hiking and camping over most forms of recreation. Made for marvelous times for this "trailblazer "!

Paralleling the creek hauling a 5-year-old on your back is rough. Carrying them out while climbing the "big hill" could be tough indeed.
Hawksbill is a must in the winter after a good snow has fallen. It gives it an entirely different perspective.

I got lucky when we caught it. Freak snow storm the night before right over that area wasn't forecasted. I know the one trail hugs the cliff but another group came in on a different trail. It looked to cute straight to the Craig through the woods from the parking area. It would depend on how well your kids listen, on how far away I would let them get from you, on the Craig or cliffs if you go that way. The drop off in some parts is a yard or less off the path. The hike it self was pretty level. We went to the glory hole the same day and it was all iced over. Good times

Anyone ever been to Lake Superior? I am headed to the Minnesota north shore area a little north of Duluth, Minnesota. I had to cancel my trip up to the New York City area that I booked back in December as I am not allowed to travel there because of my job. I figured camping along the Minnesota north shore on Lake Superior would be a nice way of staying away from outside human contact during this time all while seeing some great views and some nice cool weather this time of year. There are some pretty spectacular cliffside views along Lake Superior I am looking forward to seeing for the first time and getting some great pictures of. Taking my tent and inexpensive gas will make for a quite cheap vacation.

we go somewhere new every year to watch the Braves. This would be our first trip to LA. We went to SD 6 years ago. That's my only trip to CAL.
Just remembered that this thread existed. Much like some of you, my wife and I had to cancel our plans this year. We were going to make a Pacific Northwest/southern British Columbia, Canada visit in July. We already has Airbnb's rented in Seattle, Vancouver, and Portland, along with plane tickets to get there, and train/bus tickets to travel between the cities.
We had all the restaurants picked out, and other things to enjoy. We were going to spend three days in Seattle, two in Vancouver (including seeing the Seattle Sounders vs. Vancouver Whitecaps, AW will appreciate that), and then three in Portland.
Of course, Seattle was the first hotspot when all this started.
Luckily, we got refunds on mostly everything. We paid for the plane tickets with credit card points, so we are out $45 for taxes and fees unless we use them by December of this year. The way things are going, it looks like we will be out that $45...
