I'm just hoping we come out of the Oregon game healthy and play them respectable.  Maybe their new starting QB will struggle, but it'll still be a tough task.  I'm excited though!

Praying that NO ONE gets hurt.

Cause Gus is not playing!   Proud that he's not putting up with players that won't obey the rules.

I think we go 10-2 again this season. Bold prediction, but I think we will win one of the two big non-conference game (Oregon, Nebraska), and then drop one in the Sunbelt. We will see! Can't wait!

To be overtly optimistic, the Red Wolves do have a history of sneaking up and challenging big schools in money games.  Even beat an SEC team in '08.

Hmm, Big XII team back then, a 4-8 one

Like pig said, Big XII but nonetheless look at other examples.
'07 - #15 Texas - 8 point loss, questionable call on onside kick that could have affected the outcome
'07 - Tennessee - Battled to the end of the fourth quarter before losing by a small margin.
'09 - #15 Iowa - 3 point loss. Missed 22 yard field goal in the the 3rd ended up being the difference in the game.

Oregon is the best team offensively we've ever played, even better than Cam Newton and Auburn a couple of years ago.  That was amazing watching them.  I'm satisfied though, we settled down and we played very well against their 2's I thought.  The last TD drive we even had our 2's in other than Aplin and ran right at them.  Biggest thing is that we didn't get any major injuries though and hopefully we will be ready to play Memphis next week.

Destroyed is not even the right word.  I really feel sorry for the players.

It was a money game that I hear Malzahn did not want to play.

Memphis is next week.  I'll be there.

Guess what, he might not want to play Nebraska either, but ASU will need the $$$ from that game too. And I walk at Joe Mac, prefer the layout better.

Memphica .... I have never heard that one before. Oh and I have never heard West Memphica either.

I was planning on being at this game... really looking forward to it but it might not be possible for me to attend. This is a hige game for both programs. Memphis needs this win as bad as ASU does. Should be a good game.

Correct, Freeze wanted to schedule this game because he wanted to watch Oregon in person and learn from them for his offense.  Obviously he assumed he would be here this year and he wasn't.

Good news though is that we had 500 yards of total offense and 40% was against their 1st team defense.  I'll take that.  We've also only given up more than 38 points 3 times since 2007.  Tennessee did it 3 or 4 years ago, and they finished ranked 12th.  Auburn beat us 52-26 the year they won the national championship and now Oregon this year and I assume they'll finish highly ranked again.

Bad news, was we had 6 penalties for 57 yards, all in the first quarter.  Also, Oregon could have scored 100 I believe.  They did have a couple of 4th down conversions in the first half though.

I think we'll do fine against Memphis.  It's important that we keep our heads up and not get down.  Talent wise, Memphis doesn't compare to us, but it is a rivalry game and anything can happen, especially if we get our heads down about this game.  Not worried about Nebraska yet, but I think we'll play them much closer.  Oregon was just amazing on offense.  They've got speed, size, and a QB that didn't play like a RS freshman.  I don't know if there will be a defense in the country to match their speed on offense, but I think their defense will be vulnerable.  We had a few long drives against them and at least one, maybe two of them, resulted in no points because of a missed FG and interception.

On to Memphis though.

Oregon, in my honest opinion, will win the National Championship. They have so many weapons on offense...Barner, Thomas, Mariota, Kelley, and Lowe just to name a few. I think this is an offense that would score points on those SEC defenses. Plus their defense looks better than it has in years past.

But I think StAte will come out and destroy Memphis. We will see. Go Red Wolves!

Bama's defense shuts the ducks down. Only way the Ducks win a NC is if the NC does not have an SEC team in it.

I disagree. Oregon put up 28 on one of the best defenses in the nation in LSU. Oregon's defense last year was young too.

I think their defense still has alot to prove.  With what Alabama did to Michigan, I just don't know if anyone will top them, and Oregon has to get through USC too.

FWIW, Sports Center said Oregon was the the most impressive team this weekend. I too believe Oregon will handle USC. I don't think USC can stop their run game. Maybe noboby can. They DO have SEC speed that is refered to as lacking so often in other conferences.

Oregon has a fast defense that is very small. Bama would run the ball down their throat. Their offense wouldnt be on the field enough to do much. They would score but not over 30, which I would think they would have to have to beat Bama or LSU.

Oregon's RB hits that open hole as quick as anyone I've ever seen. And when he gets behind you He's gone.  The hype machine is all in on USC. But Oregon will win the PAC-10/12, ever how many it is now. IMO, the Ducks will be one of the NCG participants.

Oregon has a fast defense that is very small. Bama would run the ball down their throat. Their offense wouldnt be on the field enough to do much. They would score but not over 30, which I would think they would have to have to beat Bama or LSU.
DE 6'6 292, DT 6'4 301, DT 6'3 295, DE 6'7 243
MLB 6'4 234, WLB 5'11 222, SLB 6'3 233

I'd say Oregon has plenty of size. Don't just talk to talk, research what you say.

You even left out the exceptional freshman DE from Sacremento. He is 6-8 280
All I know is what I saw with my eyes on tv. That might have been the second string but they didn't look like a defensive line from the sec. I'm talkin to talk I know what I saw.

Well then you didn't look very hard. They were huge. Just as big as an SEC D-Line.

Crowd was great!  Got to give Memphis credit.  Didn't think they'd be in this one after they lost to FCS UTM last week, but they played hard and had some talent.  Defense really got off their blocks.  ASU had 619 yards of total offense and defense played well!  Special teams has got to improve, gave them 14 points off of mistakes.

You're right, special teams killed us. The defense looked a lot better than last week, but there is a lot of room to improve in stopping the run game. They were consistently getting 3-5 every time. Secondary looked good for the most part. That was an ugly win for the Red Wolves but I'll take it. I think we will play much better at Nebraska next week, maybe we can upset them. Go stAte!

Still going with this prediction?   Gus is finding out it is tougher when you play better talent.   He's a good coach but not a miracle worker.  ASU is not an elite D1.

Do you realize Petrino went 5-7 in his first year? Malzahn will have a decent year this year. Our offense just played really bad yesterday. So far we have played probably one of the best teams in the nation, and then a decent big 10 team. We will be OK lol

Oregon's RB hits that open hole as quick as anyone I've ever seen. And when he gets behind you He's gone.  The hype machine is all in on USC. But Oregon will win the PAC-10/12, ever how many it is now. IMO, the Ducks will be one of the NCG participants.
I would like to add too my post above of Sept.5.  ASU played the 2013 National Champion this year. Not only will the Ducks blast USC, they will meet and beat Bama in the NCG.

We have improved each week. We looked a lot better last night (I know Alcorn was terrible) but Aplin hit every open reciever right on the money, the secondary looked a lot better, and our special teams mistakes have been reduced.

Huge game next week vs. Western Kentucky. They just hammered Southern Miss last night and then beat Kentucky the week before. Big big game, couldn't stress that enough. Go stAte!

Arizona was suppose to be able to hang with Oregon a little better. They, like Oregon, recruit California players with a lot of speed but they were way over matched. I see them and Bama sailing right into the title game without much trouble. LSU is no match for Bama. USC got a better shot at beating Oregon. Anyway ASU played the biggest of all the big boys this season. Something to talk about anyway, I don't think anybody figured Oregon to be THAT good at the time.

Well to be fair, Arizona got to the red zone about 6 times and scored 0 points.  Part of it was Oregon's defense stepping up, but they couldn't kick a FG and their execution wasn't there.  I think their starting QB got hurt too.  It should have been a much closer game!

I think we've lost too much talent on defense on the line.  We don't get near the pressure on the QB that we did last year.  That's what makes our secondary look so bad.

Aplin just seems "off" too.  He is missing open receivers and throwing into double coverage too much.

WKU is very good, but they could lose a game or two.  This thing isn't over yet.

I Knew another 10 win season was unrealistic with the kids learning a new system but I still thought 8 wins was possible. I am leaning more towards 6 now. But expect things to start picking up next year to get to 8-9 wins year in and year out an competing for conference on a yearly basis. The state of ASU football is still where we have to play money games, so you can chalk up a loss or two tree with every so often sneaking up on someone. This yea the conference seems to be better than it has ever. I can't think of a year where te sunbelt has had this many games that raised this much national attention.

Still haven't seen what freeze did other than install and call an offense while at stAte. An offense he installed during Roberts last year. It was also a year with little to no injuries, something that plagued several seasons while Roberts was there. I knew another 10 win season was on the wishful thinking list, but an 8-4 I thought could be possible, leaning more towards 6-7 now. The kids have to learn a new system, if Freeze was so much better than Gus, why did they not win 10 games 2 years ago when freeze first came in. Sorry but stAte upgraded and got a guy who grabbed players with offers to Arkansas, didn't see that kind of recruits with Freeze. State also got a guy who has had the highest offensive production on multiple years in his short time in the college ranks.

Gus is a good coach, but the fact is that he is coaching average talent and not Auburn national title caliber talent.  However, Freeze coached that same group to 10 wins. This is the first time in a long while that Gus is having to coach with talent not obviously better than what he is playing against, it's tougher to do.   ASU doesn't see the same degree of talent as a typical SEC school.

You are so wrong.  The core of the OFFENSE is back, and even then they lost the leading receiver from last year and a couple of OL.  The defense lost alot and our defense was pretty dang good last year.  That's the biggest difference.  I don't think we'd have a better record right now with Freeze at the helm.

Good lord. Please research a little bit before posting. The Arkansas State defense lost a lot of key players from last season. Including Sun Belt conference defensive player of the year, Brandon Joiner. A few others are Demario Davis (3rd round draft pick), Kelcie McCray (Miami Dolphins), Nigel Byrd, and a couple of DT.

The offense lost the best receiver they have had in Dwayne Frampton. We also lost 3 of our starting lineman from last season.

A-State will be fine. Just extremely young this year

This season has been about what every sane person thought it would be. The kids had to learn a new system, it takes time. Freeze was the OC before taking over as the head coach. He had an additional year to install his system. These things take time to learn. I thought 8-4 would be a good season, but looking at 7-5 ain't so bad. Not sure stAte will get to the point of expecting 10 wins a season for a while when we still have to play money games. 8-4 and 9-3 maybe, but sorry I can't jump off the wagon yet. I feel like we have a better situation than we have had in a long time. I think Roberts made great strides while at stAte taking the team from the cellar dweller to a team that competed, freeze was opportunistic and jumped ship, and malzahn is yet to be determined. Roberts did a good job of upping the talent level on campus and was plagued with injuries. Freeze used Roberts athletes to win conference and jumped. He still hasn't convinced me that he can recruit and do it on a consistent basis. I wish him all the luck in the world, but not going to dwell on him not being at stAte. Malzahn is here, he is working the kids, offensive production is up, our defense still has some growingto do.

It does explain the story a bit. But with any rivalry game, all bets are off and anybody can win.

Either way there is a 3-way tie for first between ASU, MTSU, and ULM. ASU plays both at home in the next 4 weeks.

Half

ASU 17
ULM 10

But we are shooting ourselves in the foot.

Looks like not moving the score board at the end of the half might come back to haunt ASU.

Crowd looks good from what they are showing on TV.  Have they announced an attendance number yet?

The Indians Red Wolves are looking good right now.  Keep up the good work so the state has at least one program going bowling.

I thought capacity was 30,700.  Good crowd but it didn't look full.

The Warhawks backup is holding his own but they are missing Browning.  NLULM isn't the same team without KB.  I was at the UAF and Baylor games and he was a big reason why they beat the Hawgs and hung with the Bears.  (To be honest though, the 'backs could have won if they would have been able to run effectively or complete passes in the fourth quarter.)

It isn't, less people on the west side than the east(camera). Still  it's a big crowd for a Thursday night in J'boro. They must have included the 10,000 tickets given to area companies im the 30,000.

Not sure if Browning wouldve made much of a difference. The ULM line was getting dominated. The back up made all the throws he could. Starson and Stone were in the backfield all night. Plus ULM was NOT stopping Aplin and the stAte offense. ULM might've scored one or two more times, but ASU had that game in hand.

Appreciate the confidence, but here's the best I can do.  It goes back to 1992 since that was when it looked like ASU moved to D-I.  The number in the last column is what they call a "Simple Rating System" and the way it is calculated on their site has UAF slightly ahead of ASU at this point of 2012.  Of course none of this takes into consideration mid-season ratings.

They're definitely playing their best football right now. If ASU gets passed them, I can see them knocking off MTSU to get bowl eligible next week.

ASU  41
Troy  34
Title: Re: 2012 Arkansas State University Red Wolves

Standings:
1. ASU   8-3 (6-1)
2. MTSU 7-3 (5-1)
3. ULM   7-5 (5-2)
4. ULL    6-4 (4-2)
5. WKU  6-5 (3-4)
6. Troy   5-6 (3-4)
7. UNT   4-7 (3-4)
8. FIU    3-8 (2-5)
9. FAU   3-8 (2-5)
10. USA 2-9 (1-6)

Notable games remaining:

Troy @ MTSU next week. Troy looks for bowl eligibility while MTSU playing for conference title show down against ASU Dec. 1.

MTSU @ ASU December 1. If MTSU beats Troy, the winner of the ASU vs. MTSU game will be the conference champion.

If MTSU loses to Troy and wins @ ASU, things get really hairy with a potential of 4 Co-champions.

Tennessee is pushing to get Gus as their next head coach. I guess we will see if he intends to stay at ASU or not.

I know for a fact they have offered Gus the job.

I know for a fact that they do not want anything to do with BP.

If I was Gus I would probably take the Vol job..... Hope he stays a Red Wolf.

I think they're more likely to get Gruden.  Gus knows he needs to spend a few years as a head coach before he takes on an SEC program, or else he'd be the HC at Kentucky or Vandy right now.

Sorry Seven.  I feel sorry for the Hogs but not for the Hog fans.

No, no actually I take that back.  I even feel sorry for the most obnoxious Hog fan out there.  It's been a brutal year.  Petrino.  People everywhere making fun of him and his girlfriend.  That was by far the favorite costume for Halloween this year.  And then the absolutely worst season for the Hogs I have ever seen.

They could always come to watch the other Arkansas team.  :)

I am proud of those  Red Wolves kids.   I know a few of them.  They deserve a pat on the back for a great season.

Go Red Wolves!!!

Bad move for Malzahn and stAte.  He could have stayed at stAte as long as he cared to and been a legend on the level of Broyles at Arkansas.  Now he goes to a program that has a tendency of firing coaches who win double digit games.  He'll be there a few years, have quite a bit of success, and then get fired on a down year.

Hate it for y'all, I'm a stAte fan as much as I'm an Arkansas fan (maybe more since my mom and aunt are stAte alumni), and I was really thinking he would take stAte to the next level.

A-State should keep hiring these one-and-dones if it means winning the Sun Belt every year.

Back to Auburn, that should be interesting.  Down program, on the edge of NCAA penalties.  Wonder how long they will give him to win.

Going back to Mobile!   A lot of fans are griping but I say to them "I know of many teams that would LOVE to be going to a bowl at all!!"

I would rather go there than than Shreveport.  Yuck!!

Liberty Bowl would have been better for the fan base but oh well!

Playing Kent State.

Congrats to ASU !   Shreveport yuck ? Casinos & Entertainment are right there. Indy Bowl is a much better stadium than Ladd Stadium. 45 minute ride to the Mississippi casinos. Mobile does have better bars & restaurants. Enjoy Mobile though , Go ASU !!!

I have been to Shreveport many times.  The last time I was on the boardwalk, someone was abducted and murdered while I was there.  I know that can happen anywhere but that has kinda stuck with me when I think of Shreveport.  Remember Hoghead, even Memphis doesn't scare me.  I am street smart but that was just plain scary and I haven't been back.  This way in Mobile, I could put a few days on the beach too.  :)

4 coaches in 4 years is why ASU will NEVER be an elite program...

Arkansas may have been down for a year, but we will be back...

I hope all you ASU fans had fun kicking us Hog fans in a down year...because the Freezes and the Malzahns are not just gonna keep coming down the pike... ;)

Another way to look at it is that ASU could become very attractive to young talented coaches because of these coaches making their way into the SEC via ASU.

Both fan bases have become very adept at that. The inconvenient truth is that in the big picture both schools are nothing more than also rans in college football.

Maybe, maybe not...but ASU will never have any continuity until they keep a head coach longer than a year...

Arkansas is one year removed from being ranked #5 in the nation...Petrino screwed up, JLS was GAWD awful...I guess if that's an also ran, oh well...Arkansas will be back...they are in better shape than ASU...

Ohio State, of course depending on which poll you rely on...lol...doesn't matter though...ASU will always be second tier while the Hogs play in the premier conference in America...ASU can have their best season ever and won't hit the top twenty five...

Abducted on the Boardwalk  and murdered ?  When and what year ? The Boardwalk is one of the safest spots in Bossier City. It's loaded down with police and security. This must have happened at a Casino parking lot. There's no Casinos on the Boardwalk.
As for Mobile(I use to live there too) It's a little seedy there as well. Ladd Stadium isn't in the best side of town. Heading to the Beach in January in Alabama isn't a good thing. It's gonna be COLD !!

Mr. Negative.   I don't care what time of year it is, I love the beach.  I just don't like Shreveport that much.  Been there when the Hogs have played there.  I would rather drive down to Orange Beach after the game.   2007 was the last time I was in Shreveport.  No place is safe anymore.
