Tommy Cody at Atkins has been at West Fork, Sheridan, and Woodlawn....and maybe others...

I'm putting this here for future reference for Tommy Cody. Pinning down his years and where he was at when will be tough.

Seems I remember Josh Harrison at Two Rivers had an earlier head coaching stint at Ola before leaving and then returning to Two Rivers this year. I think he has a twin brother so I may be confused about this but I don't think so.

It is Bryan Hutson's second stint at Paris.

IIRC, he also coached at NLR before said stints.

Harrison was HC at two rivers the last time they made the playoffs, but left for 2-3 years before coming back..

Chris Norton at Rose Bud has three more wins from last season coaching at Lake Village. He's also coached at West Memphis Christian, but not sure if those would count since they were in a private school association.

I have to amend my last footnote about Coach Kramer. I believe I doubled up on his wins after receiving information that some radio personalities said he won his 50th game as a head coach. I don't see how this can be correct from what I've read, so I put him back at 26 wins, which I think is correct.

One of my favorite small features of FF that has developed over the recent years is the information on the team pages that shows the coaching record of head coaches on the team profile page.

I have compiled the list with the info that FF has gathered and put the coaches in descending order based on # of wins. This list should reflect week 1 results.

A few things that I noticed while doing this is of course not all of them are accurate. That would be a near impossible task. But I thought we could help make these records more accurate. I just have him at 1 win until someone can let me know how many wins he actually has as a head coach. The more you can corroborate your information, the better, but I'll try to find resources if you tell me what you know.

Here's the list:

A few things:

1. I've updated the win totals to the best of my ability through Week 8 of the 2017 Football Season.

bobnweaven, I was able to find articles (two of them) that said Coach Wells of Harrison had 162 wins in Missouri before coming to Harrison, but not 172. I went with 162 for now.

Longfellow, I do see that Coach Harrison was the coach at Two Rivers in 2012-2013 and that's the only years I've been able to corrobate online. Was he Two River's first football coach when they started the program in 2009? Was he the Ola coach before that in 2008?

He took over for David Minnie, whom I believe stepped down in either in 2008 or 2009...and he left for morrilton after 2013

Thanks, HF. I figured it had to be 08 or 09 he took over. If you find out a firm year then let me know. Longfellow is pretty sure it was 2008. So was that 2008 for Ola? Two Rivers wasn't until 2009 correct?

I'm thinking he took over in 2009. Longfellow would know better than me, but I can confirm Coach Minnie thru 2008.

I believe Bishop at Green Forest was once the HC at Berryville for a few years. Not sure of any years or win totals.

He was at Berryville twice, ....Was hired at East Newton county Missouri around 2010 as HC too. And spent time at Huntsville (unsure if HC or not) in between there and Green Forest.
Maxpreps has him at East Newton 09-12
And at Berryville from 06-09

Fastest that each coach could reach a new "win club"

Malham - Cabot - Could reach 300 win club Week 3 vs. Benton.

Jones - Greenwood - Could reach 300 win club Week 5 vs. El Dorado

Adams - Farmington - Could reach 200 win club Week 4 vs. Clarksville

Mitchell - North Little Rock - Could reach 200 win club Week 6 vs. Fort Smith Southside

Totty - Rison - Could reach 200 win club in the 2nd round of playoffs.

Abshier - Prairie Grove - Could reach 200 win club in the 1st round of playoffs.

Bolding - Pine Bluff - Could reach 200 win club in the 2nd round of playoffs.

Reed - El Dorado - Could reach 150 win club Week 10 vs. Little Rock Hall

Larkan - Greenland - Could reach 100 win club Week 3 vs. Gentry

Pratt - Bentonville West - Could reach 100 win club Week 2 vs. Bryant

I knew he started young. It all depends on what circumstances he stays in, but he could be a 300+ win coach easily. Maybe break all time records depending on how far Rick Jones goes.

How about adding State Championship appearances and wins to the list? Then you would have a better judge of the level of coaching...

Exactly...be nice to see. Some conferences are just weak, so coaches can pile up on the wins, but it's what you do in the playoffs that matters.

What do we think happens, he get to 200 wins or 50 career losses first.  I'm going with the wins.  Depending on the season, he could add anywhere from 13-15 more wins this season alone.  Pretty solid stat to win 4 out of every 5 ball games you play.

I think the lone blemish has been those title game losses.  Every single one of the losses has had some interesting circumstances surrounding them.  All have been out of Bo's control as well, but never-the-less, it's been tough to lose three title games by a combined, what, 4 points I think? The stat I like the MOST though, 7-0 in semi-final games.  You get Bo to the semi's, he'll get you into the title game.  Very impressive, especially when you look at who Warren has had to be in the semi-finals those years to make it to the title game.

Clay Totty of Rison is now at 206 wins. He reached 200 with the win over Palestine-Wheatly. They had a celebration for it after the game and Rison has won 6 games since including the win over LR McClellan JV that appears as OPEN on our schedule this season. The game counted because we played up in classification.

Does anyone know if Mark Guthrie was the head coach at North Pulaski and if so what years?

EDIT: Just realized one of my mistakes was that his name is Mike, not Mark.

This is the best I can get for him:

Coached at Lincoln 2002-2006.

Coached at Cedarville 2007-2009

Coached at Bauxite 2014

Coached at Haskell HG 2018-Present

Hard to pin this down for sure, but it is the best I have.

I have changed this up a bit. I have decided to only count coach wins in Arkansas. It is easier to track that way and a bit more main stream. It came to how do I differentiate wins in a Private School only league from one state and another state's non chartered football school? Coaches from out of Arkansas come from so many of those backgrounds that I decided to limit it like this.

I also only used FF as a last resort for my source. I used online resources outside of FF first.

Please let me know any mistakes or oversights I've made.

That makes sense.  Cohu at LRCA was 130 wins or so short by my count.

Good job you undertook in 2017. I was wondering about Coach Hutson at Paris at that time and noted the 21 wins in OK at Colcord were not included and see your clarification here recently. Understand the complexity of the private school issue. But seems like coming from a regular school out of state (not a private school etc) might should be counted perhaps as a "sidebar (xxx)" note. LOL
Anyway, interesting and admire your efforts to do this.

I understand the difficulty in tallying wins from outside the state, but I guess I fail to see the reasoning behind not counting out of state wins - public or private.  An example, there are four Arkansas schools who play in a Mississippi private school league (MAIS).  That league is an NFHS affiliate member and is recognized just as any other state association by the NFHS.  A school from that league - MRA - made a run in the Shootout of the South this summer at PA.  While depth in that association isn't what it was even 5-6 years ago, its still recognized football.  Using that league as an example as several coaches have spent time there.  You beat who is on the schedule.

Figured I'd add a little update to this topic.  With David Carpenter coming out of retirement to lead the Junction City Dragons this fall, he becomes the winningest active head coach in Arkansas High School football currently.

Carpenter's 242-93-1 record puts him comfortably ahead of the other 3 coaches at the top of the rankings.  He also brings with him 6 state titles--which is the most in active head coaches.

Currently, your top four active head coaches in the win category are as follows:
1. Carpenter 242-93-1
2. Paschal 234-62
3. Totty 228-64-1
4. Hembree 227-56-1

There's a bit of a falloff after Hembree as Bobby Bolding retired from White Hall after the season with a record of 220-78-3.  The next closest is Danny Abshier at Prairie Grove with a 218-120-2 overall record.  I don't anticipate Abshier winning enough this coming season to catch any of the coaches in front of him.

I also suspect that Hembree should finally pass up Totty this season in overall wins.  Paschal and Carpenter should both win a lot of games as well as Wynne and Junction City look to have some good football teams heading into the Fall.  It will be interesting to see how long Carpenter decides to stick around in this 2nd stint at Junction City.  Will he be like Billy Dawson, who returned to the reigns at Nashville for a 2nd stint late in his career but ultimately couldn't recapture the magic of the first go-around?  Or could he step in and immediately help guide the Dragons back to Little Rock where they haven't played since 2019.

Either way, Carpenter's return is certainly a shake-up in the coaching ranks.  It'll be interesting to see how long he sticks around as he will have the program to continue to rack up wins during his time there.

Happy to provide an update on my post from last year for you @Coach9586.  Things have definitely changed quite a bit as there was some considerable shake-up with the coaches listed.

Currently, your top three active head coaches in the win category are as follows (this includes 2023 results through Week 7):
1. Hembree 245-58-1 (80.5% winning percentage)
2. Paschal 243-66 (78.6%)
3. Totty 241-70-1 (77%)

Carpenter, who was the leader in active wins, retired following the 2022 season.  He retired for the 2nd time leaving behind a career coaching record of 246-99-1, which would've kept him one up on Hembree but Bo is closing fast.  Never-the-less, his departure and Hembree's 7-0 start to the season at Warren has catapulted him from 4th this time last season into the top spot and in all likelihood, he'll continue to separate from Paschal and Totty as the season progresses.  Not only is he the current leader in career wins amongst active head coaches, his 245 wins place him at #10 all-time in Arkansas high school coaching ranks. He also has the highest winning % (80%) behind only Frank McClellan (85%).

He has also lost less games than any of the coaches ahead of him on the all-time list. Bo has lost just 58 games in his 23.5 seasons, the next closest on the all-time list is Frank McClellan with 60 and then Barry Linney with 90.

Hembree and Warren should not only make the play-offs, but should make a pretty deep run.  The Lumberjacks appear to have the luxury of a pretty favorable draw this year as opposed to previous seasons, so there's the potential to see Bo add another 6 or 7 wins to his total for the season already, pushing him well over the 250 win mark.

Paschal has Heber Springs pointed in the right direction and their showdown this Friday with Stuttgart could really jumpstart things in Panther land placing them in a tie for 1st in the 2-4A with Harding Academy, who they play next week.  Paschal will end up in the play-offs this season and should win a few games.

Unfortunately, the one who will really begin to fall back will be Totty as he inherited an impossible situation at Wynne this year.  Between the tornado and then departures of some very talented players over the summer, it's been a very rough first season for him with the Yellowjackets. His chances aren't at 0% that he'll make the play-offs, but it will take some small miracles--mainly, winning out the remainder of the season.  They do close out with 2 of the worst teams in the 5A-East making their Week 10 match-up with Nettleton a must win.

As I suspected, it really will come down to who can outlasts who on the sidelines.  In Bo's case, I think there are at least 5 more seasons guaranteed for him in Warren as his youngest son is playing 7th grade football this season and one would imagine he would want to coach him through his senior season.  Beyond that, it's anyone's guess.  Paschal isn't a spring chicken and I imagine Heber Springs might be his last stop unless a pretty enticing offer comes along.  Still, at his age, I can't imagine he has too many more seasons on the horizon.  Totty is in a similar boat.  He's older than Bo, not quite as old as Paschal I don't believe but one has to wonder what this season has done for him as far as wear and tear mentally.  Totty isn't used to 2-win seasons, and as of now, that's what he has.  Plus the stress that comes with literally rebuilding a football stadium/facility and honestly, a team after all the departures.  I'll be interested to see how things go for him in Wynne.  Another sub .500 campaign and things start to get warm I would imagine.

All things considered, I think at this point, Bo is on to maintain the active wins lead for the foreseeable future.  I have no clue what his future plans are, but one has to imagine he's got 300 wins in his sights, and I know he wants a few more trophies in the trophy case.  Can he ever catch Frank at 346 wins--that I don't know.  But if he coaches 10 more seasons, he's going to give that record a good scare for sure.

Thanks for the update! I ran out of stuff to read so I started down the coach wins rabbit hole from the 6A board and the Rison topic on the 3A board! I knew of the almanac but it hadn't been updated since 2021. I figured Paschal and Totty were the lone 2 at the top.
