Feature in the Monday EDNT about the 2009 football team:  CLICK HERE

Congratulations to Jacob on receiving the Burlsworth award.

As noted in the feature, "According to the official website, "Each year every high school football program in Arkansas nominates one player from their team to receive the Brandon Burlsworth award. This player should be of good moral character and demonstrate a desire to excel in the class room. This award recognizes the student athlete who puts their team first and is not looking to just draw attention to themselves. ..."

As I understand it, some schools give out Burlsworth awards each year as part of their awards program.  Junction City does not participate in this award.  The particular award Jacob won was was different from the "every school" award.

The award given in the championship game is voted on by a group of invited coaches and others in the press box who were on hand to watch the championship game.  The Burlsworth site was recently updated.  The older site better defined the two award types and said this about the particular award given in the championship game:  "The award is based on performance during the game, character and a willingness to put the team first.  The award is given to a player from each team."  This can still be seen if you click on the year links on the page below.  The previous site also had pictures of recipients from the championship games.

Previous winners from Junction City were:

2008 - Byran Jones
2006 - Shay Barnette
2003 - Charlie Honza

Congratulations to all JC recipients and others who have been so recognized in their school's title game(s).

great read on the young man, good luck to him. i hope he wins the award.

I don't think he will have to worry about being red-shirted. He will be playing if not starting somewhere next fall. Hopefully he'll get to replace Malcolm Shepard next season!

By TONY BURNS
Sports Editor
Junction City football coach David Carpenter sat with Alan Turner last week, looking at game-film from the Dragons' championship season. Turner was putting together a highlight film to send to college coaches. Looking back at some of his past games brought back pleasant memories of plays long-since forgotten.
"Yeah, some plays I didn't remember until I saw them," said Turner with a smile. "It looked all right."
As great as some of his exploits were, it's still understandable how they could be forgotten. With his speed, they happened so fast, they were often over before you realized what happened.
"You really forget through the year how many 65 (yard) plus runs the young man has had until you start watching," said Carpenter.
A blur on the field, perhaps a slow-motion or rewind button is the only way to appreciate what Turner did this season. His numbers alone certainly don't provide a true measure of his accomplishments.
The senior rushed for 1,059 yards and 12 touchdowns - pedestrian numbers for a back drawing interest from the likes of Auburn and Ole Miss. But, the bulk of his statistics were compiled during the first half of games where the Dragons outscored their opponents 305-26.
"When we blow teams out, I knew I wasn't going to get to carry the ball that much anyway but as long as we're winning, I don't care," said Turner, who said he doesn't bother explaining his statistics to others. "Most of them know that we have blowouts and I usually don't play that much."
Turner averaged an eye-popping 10.28 yards per carry and an incredible 48.1 yards per kick return. Overall, he averaged 12.8 yards every time he touched the football.
"He's definitely one of the good running backs that's come through here," said Carpenter. "He hasn't had as many yards as a lot of our other running backs, but in the regular season he didn't have but 55 carries the whole 9-game season. You break down 55 totes in nine games, that's not many carries. In one ball game, he had three touchdowns and never carried the ball one time on offense. He had a kickoff return, an interception return and a punt return and he didn't even go out on offense."
In addition to Turner's 12 rushing touchdowns, he returned both kickoffs he touched for touchdowns and one of his four punt returns for another score.
Not bad considering his best position might be defense. As a run-stuffing strong safety, he recorded 67.5 tackles with seven interceptions. He returned two of the interceptions for touchdowns.
"A lot of (colleges) are looking at him as the strong safety," said Carpenter. "We sent game films to Auburn and Ole Miss and they want some highlight films to look at to get a quick overview. Of course Ouachita, SAU, Arkansas Tech and (Arkansas State) are all looking. I won't know exactly until next week."
Turner feels comfortable on either side of the ball at both running back or safety.
"It really don't matter, I like both of them. Wherever they put me, I'll play," said Turner, who then added, "I like strong safety. I like to hit."
Also a standout in basketball and track and field, Turner has moved from sport-to-sport-to-sport throughout his career. After Junction City won the state football championship on Saturday, he was on the basketball court before his football gear was even put away.
"They gave me the weekend off and then Monday I started practicing basketball," said Turner, who said the thought of focusing on one sport did enter his mind.
"I did when I was younger but it doesn't really matter because you're still going to lift," he said. "I just like playing sports. I always knew football was my number-one sport. I just like playing all of them."
Turner is the two-time defending 2A state champion in the 200 meters and was third in state in the 100. He is the conference champion in both the 100 and 200. The physicality is what drove him to football.
"I like contact. When we were younger, we would always play tackle football when we were in like the second and third grade," he said.
Turner's speed might be his most talked-about attribute, however. His coach said he's also shown leadership, especially as a senior.
"Very talented young man - he enjoys not just playing the game but trying to learn the game, which makes a difference because when we were trying to get different coverages going on back there, he would definitely get to understand where everybody was. He would make sure he had his area covered," said Carpenter.
"He was very valuable on both sides. He's one of those guys, when he graduates you're losing about five people because of all the different things he did for us."
Although soft-spoken, Turner carries himself with an air of confidence. When a photographer showed up in Junction City, it was Turner who found an assistant coach to open up the fieldhouse and get the jerseys. It was Turner who called teammate Byran Jones to the fieldhouse for the photo session. It was Turner who did all of this while in the middle of basketball practice.
"One of the other things about him is the classroom. He's a good student," said Carpenter. "He's eligible to go right on into college. He's got over a three-point G.P.A. He works just as hard in the classroom if not harder than he does in his athletics. Right now, we finished up football the other night and now he's over in basketball. As soon as we get through with that he goes into track. To do all that and still maintain the high grade point average he does is super."
Turner is turning his attention to recruiting. He plans to visit Ole Miss, Auburn and OBU with more visits pending.
"I want to look at the surroundings and how the coaches treat you," he said.
He's also focused on the upcoming basketball season, which tips off soon for the Dragons. He still managed a quick second to pause and reflect on Junction City's back-to-back state championships in football.
"After the first one we won, all the juniors who were becoming seniors talked about 'we gotta win next year'," said Turner. "If we didn't win, it was going to be a failure to the season because of what we did the year before. I thought last year would be sweeter but I believe this year was, just because we had a little setback earlier during the season. Then to come back and win in the state championship and to go back-to-back, it was pretty special."

Anybody out there see the January 1 front page of the EDNT sport section?

Somebody named Carter Bryant, who was identified as a "former standout in football and soccer at El Dorado High School," wrote a piece titled "Murphy deserves News-Times Player of the Year."

The thing went beyond the examples that have been referenced already in this thread about Jones and Turner.  The other nominees (Murphy, Landsdell and Midyett) have already recieved features like Jones and Turner had.  Bryant's feature read like it should have been in the Letters to the Editor section.  Anybody know if the other nominees for the award will receive "hugger" recommendations?

Don't think that will happen dog hope I'm wrong. If not it sure is a bias. Another front page article in the sport section isn't fair unless there going to feature all of the players. Jones winning MVP in the WMS, and playing both ways really says it all......................... 8)

Murphy had a banner year, but even as an El Do fan it's hard to argue with Jones' performance.

He single-handedly took over the title game against Bearden in the 4th quarter....

Just to make sure nobody gets the wrong impression, my earlier post was in no way meant to insinuate Murphy is not a deserving candidate for the award.  I was just questioning the extra press he appears at this point to be receiving.

Hey GCF, I started a thread in General Sports about the 2009 Landers award.  Don't know if you opened it or not, but Murphy is a candidate for that award also.  KATV is asking for votes from the public on their site and the link in the thread will take you there.

I saw it....completely forgot about it actually.....

While I think Murphy can stake a large claim to the award, I believe Byran Jones is the state's best player. Period.

from what i was told there was a debate as to whether the piece about murphy should run as a letter or in sports. they went with it in sports. Let's see:

1)  3 time all-state selection,
2)  2 time state championship MVP,
3)  Burlsworth Award winner in 2008 championship game,
4)  State Farm 2A defensive player of the year,
5)  Two way position player (Has also kicked),
6)  Second highest rated college prospect in the state of Arkansas,
7)  Could be the most recruited football player to ever come out of Union County (not sure about that one but thought I'd take a chance ;D ).

Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino used his one allowed visit to meet with Jones, according to Dragons' head coach and athletic director David Carpenter. Head coaches are allowed just one visit at a high school while assistant coaches can visit recruits more often.

Joining Petrino in Junction Wednesday were recruiter and assistant coach Tim Horton, defensive tackles coach Bobby Allen and newly hired assistant Steve Caldwell......"

Actually, it was Bob Petrino, Tim Horton,Bobby Allen, and Steve Caldwell. They came to see Byran and Allen. They both had just got back from Auburn. Arkansas has better get after it if they want Byran, his visit to the campus must be successful or they want have a chance, also he would like to go with Allan along. That would be a + for Arkansas as he would benefit them either way OFF. OR DEF...........

If he is smart he tries to get all three of those kids.   He is supposed to be going back to that wide open offense that sent people like Rattay, McCown and Troy Edwards to the NFL.   I think with that offense he will be able to snag a few skill players that otherwise wouldnt give Tech the time of day.
