For quite some time, my friends have tried to stump me by giving me the name of a high school in Arkansas and asking me to name the mascot. Just to settle all doubters, I sat down with my buddy Taylor and with his help, named all 208 from memory. Enjoy!

Western Yell County Wolverines
Osceola Seminoles
McGehee Owls
Fort Smith Northside Grizzlies
Warren Lumberjacks
Pine Bluff Zebras
Fordyce Redbugs

Name all the ones from schools that have closed and the original mascots of schools that have changed theirs and I'll be really impressed.

They are still a school. Hackett school district has just taken over some of the financial issues and if any Hartford student wishes to play football they play at Hackett. I believe we had 3 players from Hartford this season. Hartford still has their own basketball team.

Yes cotton plant was also called the scrappers...but devalls bluff "scrappers" were in reference to a fighting rooster and cotton plant "scrappers" were in reference to a fighting bulldog.

Norman was Cardinals
Caddo Gap was Wildcats
When they consolidated they became the Indians

BLUEBLOOD

Amity Rams (consolidated with Glenwood to form CenterPoint)

One of the coolest has to be Dardanelle Sand Lizards

I appreciate everyone mentioning (and naming) all these mascots. It's really cool to remember the history of high schools (and their athletic programs) here in Arkansas. Any others we've missed?

How far back are we talking?

The schools that consolidated to form the Rivercrest (formerly South Mississippi County) school district in 1970 all had high schools at one point.

Wilson Bulldogs
Keiser Yellowjackets
Dyess Eagles
Shawnee Indians

And as someone mentioned earlier the Luxora Panthers.

MR#1

New Edinburg Eagles (basketball)
Kingsland Greyhounds (basketball)
Banks  ??? (basketball)
Jefferson Prep Patriots (I think?)
Chapel Academy ???

I thought Fort Smith Southside mascot was Rebels.

bwapmikeyslap

Thanks for the Rivercrest schools breakdown! My dad pastored a small church in Mississippi County in the late 60's and the kids from his church were some of the first to attend the "new" Rivercrest School District.

Fort Smith Southside just changed to Mavericks this past season. Rebels was deemed culturally inappropriate and they made the change to Mavericks.

BO_KNOWS

The Bank Barn Owls I believe
And the jersey panthers
And the Harrell outlaws
And the woodberry woodpeckers
And the locust falcons
All these are now at Hampton

4real

Havana Demons,  colors were royal blue and white, but would use red trim. Had an evil looking demon head logo on the shorts that were styled after the bulls uniforms. It was wicked for its time in the 80's

Bellville Rockets. Were black and gold.

Student body from both schools were allowed to vote on the new colors and mascots and wolverines with maroon and silver was the winner.

Carden Bottoms and Havana boys had one the highest scoring boys games back in the 60's or earlier where both teams scored over 100 points.

Ola Mustangs
Plainview Panthers
Fourche Valley Indians
Perry and Casa originally had their own schools
Plumberville
Paron
NLR Old Main Wildcats
NLR Northeast Chargers
They added the two mascots upon reuniting into charging wildcats

bwapmikeyslap

stuck in between

Stephens Roadrunners. They played football up to the early 90's. Thought that was an unique mascot.

Just curious, but did any of these schools mentioned that have closed, win a state football championship? (If no football titles, mention other sports.)  If so, who and when?

Stamps had very good football teams.  Not sure of state titles.

This list may not be all inclusive but should give you an idea of champs over the past 50 years.

I remember when the Stamps Yellow Jackets were a team to be reckoned with on Friday nights!

I also remember the Wheatley Pirates. What was Palestine known as before they merged with Wheatley to become the Patriots?

Stephens Roadrunners was an awesome mascot. I remember the Glover twins in basketball. They were phenomenal!

I know the larger schools receive most of the press and coverage, but honestly I would much rather be at a Class AA game somewhere on a Friday night. There is nothing like a Fordyce - Rison game in Rison. Or how about some of the past yearly battles between Bearden and Junction City?

I doubt there are many other Wampus Cats, Sand Lizards, Little Johns, Go Devils, or Redbugs throughout the United States. Arkansas has some unique mascots! Also, how about the college level? Mule Riders. Wonder Boys. Boll Weevils. Reddies. I love it!

I think they had championships in track...not real sure. Coach Baker at Nashville used to be there then, if any Nashville folks can confirm.

Everybody should attend a Fordyce-Rison game in Rison at least once in their life. It's a great atmosphere, usually a good game, and the fans are fantastic. By the way, here is a link to the story about Redbug Field in Fordyce.
