I would definitely call as well.  Unless you know someone there already, just sending in a resume/application isn't enough most of the time.

You should also attend the coaches clinic. NETWORKING is the name of the game.

There's is also nothing wrong with an old fashion letter - via the US Mail.

Call and follow up with another call sometime later.  Always send your resume before or right after you call.  When you do send it, you might need to fax and email.  Some coaches are still not great with technology.  Plus a fax puts it in their hand.
