The Dragons won the Arkansas High School Weightlifting Competition Saturday in Alma, lifting 5,260 pounds to claim both the Overall championship and the 2A championship.

El Dorado placed second in the 7A-6A Division and was third in the Overall with 5,035 pounds. Benton, the 7A-6A champion, totaled 5,065 pounds to finish second in the Overall.

There were 55 teams and more than 500 athletes competing.

Junction City has won the 2A weightlifting title eight times and the Overall crown on four occasions.

"We had a very good day today. We're real pleased with the guys," said Junction City coach David Carpenter. "We have a lot of young ones on the team this year. They performed great. Had a good mix of seniors and underclassmen on there. The seniors did a real good job of leading the young guys and showing them what to do. It was a great day."

Freshman Fred Daniels won the 148-pound division with a total of 510 pounds. He set the state record in that division with a 295-pound bench press.

C.J. Johnson finished second in the 132-pound division. Taylor Mason was third in the heavyweight division.

Other competitors for the Dragons were: Davarion Nelson in the 123-pound division, Dez Brown (165-pounds), Daquan Ford (181-pounds), JaQwis Dancy (198-pounds), Corey Kemp (220-pounds), Marquez Singleton (259-pounds) and Matthew Freeman (242-pounds).
