I know it's early but I'm curious to read what you guys think of the new season. Will it be more of the same? Or will there be any surprises we are in store for?
PA Girls will likely be better than last year. Lost two senior starters, but several new players coming into high school this year who will add depth. At least a couple of the girls who started last year wouldn't have started most years for PA. They would have played a lot, but normally would have come off the bench as freshmen. Those girls will be better this year because of the experience, and the new players will ensure we can sub two or three during big games without as much drop-off.

So do you think they can win the conference title this year? I know LRCA will have something to say about that.

PA will have the talent to win, but LRCA was the best team we played last year. We split in the regular season and lost to them in PKs (8 shots deep) in the 5A Central finals. The games between these two teams could go either way.
5A Boys
DeQueen (My pick to win. Best players last year were sophomores.)
Hot Springs (A lot of talent coming back even with Eric graduating)
Maumelle
Valley View
Lakeside
So yes, more of the same.
The south will continue its dominance again. Dequeen and Hot Springs will show up big this year and you can always count on Lakeside to make a statement. With Hope you never really know about them until the season kicks off. White Hall got a new coach who is young but very smart about the game. He will have them disciplined and ready to build the program.
Here's my early pre-season top 10:
Hot Springs (South)
Valley View (East)
Dequeen (South)
Lakeside (South)
Maumelle (West)
LRCA (Central)
Clarksville (West)
PA (Central)
Sylvan Hills (Central)
Nettleton (East)
Teams I have looking in:
White Hall, Greenbrier, Batesville
You can't really tell much until the season kicks off, but I just thought it would be interesting to get a pre-season top 10 going.
Top 15 Pre-season Rankings:
1. Hot Springs
2. Dequeen
3. Valley View
4. Maumelle

8. LRCA
9. Batesville
10. Harrison
11. PA
12. Sylvan Hills
13. Hope
14. Greenbrier
15. White Hall

Is this official? I just think it's a good list, that's why I was wondering. But LRCA has talent coming up. I put them at 6 in my top 10, but I feel like I will be surprised.
5a Girls Top 10
1. Harrison - 5a champs
2. LRCA - rough outing last season, will come back stronger
3. Pulaski Academy - solid team with solid coaching
4. Valley View - a strong team with talent
5. Maumelle - runner up, will be a competitive team
6. Greenbrier - will make noise in the west
7. Dequeen - represents the south
8. Batesville - a very competitive team from the east
9. Vilonia - a team that is continuously improving
10. Sylvan Hills - has players coming back, should be a good team
Need to specify boys or girls.
Batesville Girls have a new coach. It will be interesting to see how the girls respond to him. This considering thei relative success of the team under Coach Rowe, who while not that knowledgeable, was quite a motivator and who had a great rapport with the girls.

I understand. I feel like the west will be a fight between Harrison, Clarksville, Maumelle and possibly Greenbrier. The south will be a shoot-out between Hot Springs, Dequeen and Lakeside. The central is probably going to be dominated by LRCA but I think Sylvan Hills is up and coming. I'm questioning PA right now. The east will be all Valley View but Nettleton alongside Batesville will battle it out for #2 seed.

I agree with your questions about the PA boys right now. They not only had a terrible end to a pretty decent season last spring, but they also lost some big names in their squad as well. Their top goalscorer, and top 3 centre-backs all graduated leaving a huge void in a PA team that relied heavily on defense and quick, one-way goals. On top of that, their transfer student from Ireland that started at CDM moved back last summer as well. So, the question will be how well they can react to these cons, and bounce back with a decent team again this season.

It honestly shouldn't have been such a game, but McClellan never gave up like we thought during the game. Of course there were issues in the lineup at the start of the match, as our top goalscorer received a controversial red card against Fair the game before. So, we ended up putting our star CB up at striker (he can play anywhere really) and that left a hole in our defense. It was 1-1 at half time, so our coach pulled him back to defense to solidify what we had, and hoped someone else could find the back of the net. Yet, nobody seemed confident in front of goal that game. We got more and more nervous, as it got closer to penalties, and McClellan held out. We went to penalties and choked, and that's how one of the biggest 5A upsets happened.
Hate to hear that frotator..

I usually play either striker or CAM for PA and my Bluebirds club team. Team's very questionable right now, our tryouts are going to be held next week, so I've been trying to find and recruit as many people as I can. In my opinion, PA's offense has the potential to be somewhat of a threat as we've kept a lot of our attacking force. The only problem I see is our defense (something PA relies heavily on). I talked with my coach earlier in the year, and he said our team would be much more physical than last year since I've heard rumors of a lot of the football seniors joining the team. But again, until after tryouts I won't really know, but I'll be sure to give my opinion to y'all after the tryouts.
Good luck man! PA always seems to put together a good bunch of kids. I'm sure your coaches will get yall going.

I think VV won the 4a State Championship about 4 or 5 years ago.
You were right. The boys won one year and the girls the next year. Thanks.
Updated Harrison, PA & LRCA too.
LRCA boys lost a lot offense last year. They are moving folks around and have a couple freshmen coming up. It might be rough early and will depend how people adjust to new positions.

They were very talented last year.
Does anyone know who will be playing in the boys side of the LRCA tournament March 3?
As of right now I only know of White Hall
PA tryouts just finished and here's my opinion on the team:
There's 29 players this year, a lot more boys tried out this year. The number is a big step up from the team of 21 from last year. The coach has more options on the bench and said he would be conditioning the team much more than last year due to the fear of injuries going away with a larger number of people at his disposal. The team is a very interesting mix of physical seniors and juniors, and technically skilled sophomores and freshman. Just by playing an 11 a side game at tryouts, you can tell that PA are going to be much more of a passing and calm unit than last year's team. Again, it is probably too early to say anything, but PA look like they are actually going to be coming back as a stronger threat, even with the losses of some crucial players from last year. All I can say is that it's going to be interesting fight for first in central this year.

I'm glad to hear that PA will have numbers this season. Personally, I think the south and central conferences are the most exciting to watch because the soccer is so exciting and the games are unpredictable for the most part. I will be ready to hear about the games between PA and LRCA. Whoever wins the central will most certainly deserve it.
I recently heard rumors that the Valley View Boys soccer program is in a bit of a flux. 1) There were contributing players who decided not to return and play this year. 2) Coach Teat cut players (juniors & sophomores) who had been on the team and played since their freshman season. 3) Interestingly, all 9 incoming freshman from tryouts made the team. VV could have had good numbers with experienced players. Not sure what to think of it, but I am sure Coach Teat has a plan.
Whats yalls thoughts on teams making the playoffs this year?
My predictions:
5A west:
1. Maumelle
2. Clarksville
3. Harrison
4. Greenbrier
5A east:

2. Batesville
3. Nettleton

5A central:

3. Hall

There is a large group of 2002 and 2003 players across the state that play classic soccer, so many high schools will have some very good, well-trained freshmen this spring.
In the case of VV, at least five of the freshmen played classic and two of those five were in ODP.

5a West: Hmm. I don't know much about the West this year. I think my top 4 would be Maumelle, Clarksville, Greenbrier, Harrison.
5a East: Valley View, Nettleton, Batesville, Greene County Tech
5a South: Dequeen, Lakeside, Hot Springs, White Hall
5a Central: LRCA, PA, Sylvan Hills, Parkview
Too 4 from 6a East: Hall, Jonesboro, Mountain Home, Searcy
Top 4 from 6a West: Siloam Springs, Russellville, Benton, El Do.
Now that we are three weeks into the season, how would y'all rank the 5A boys and girls?
I can give my thoughts on the boys side:
5a Central: I think a very crucial game was played thursday between PA and LRCA. Both teams are great and it looked like PA made an early statement for conference. What i'm curious to see is how LRCA will respond when they play again. As for other teams, I think Beebe and Sylvan Hills will make some noise. Beebe is in a district that will lend them to good competition. McClellan and Parkview are teams I like to consider "sneaky." You can't count those teams out just yet. Lastly, Mills has definitely improved since last year. I don't know if they can make an impact on the conference but they are definitely making steps in their program.
Ranking as of now: PA, LRCA, Beebe, Sylvan Hills, Parkview, McClellan, Mills, and Fair.
5a East: Despite it being early, I can say that Valley View will be the favorites in the east. Batesville and Nettleton will probably be fighting it out for the 2nd spot later down the road. Greene County Tech looks like they have a decent team that could look for that 4th spot in state. I'm not counting out Wynne or Paragould because anything can happen this season.
But as of now: Valley View, Batesville, Nettleton, Greene County Tech, Paragould, and Wynne.
5a South: There are three teams who are hard to decide between: Hot Springs, Dequeen, and Lakeside are all good and could easily be ranked as the #1 team in the south. Hot Springs got a win over Lakeside, but I think Lakeside could return the favor in the second game. Dequeen has looked very impressive with solid wins. Hope looks to be a threat as well. White Hall has had a shaky start and 3/5 of their losses have been from comebacks. They are good but need to play 80 minutes.
For now: Dequeen, Hot Springs, Lakeside, Hope, and White Hall.
5a West: Maumelle looks solid right now as well as Clarksville. This conference has quality and excitement for sure. Harrison is a team you can't blink on. Greenbrier is the same way. As from what I can see Vilonia has played some tough teams. That could work in their favor come post season.
For Now: Maumelle, Clarksville, Harrison, Greenbrier, Vilonia, and Morrilton.
5a Boys Top 10:
1. Dequeen
2. Hot Springs
3. Maumelle
4. Valley View
5. PA
6. Clarksville
7. Lakeside
8. LRCA
9. Batesville
10. Beebe
I wasn't going to post this, but hey, gotta keep it real. So here is my analysis of the PA-LRCA boys game based on attending the game and watching the game film.
LRCA, for the most part, played possession ball out of the back. PA, at least for this game, did not. I could count on one hand the number of times PA connected more that two passes together. Any time a PA back or midfielder touched the ball, they would "hit it" as hard as they could down the field. No attempts at ball control, only a prayer that a forward could get on the ball and take a shot.
Offensively, in the first half PA had three shots on goal with only one on frame. LRCA had four shots with two on frame. LRCA had 65% possession. Second half was all LRCA, 85% possession with 13 shots, five on frame versus two off-frame shots by PA.
So IMO, LRCA is technically the better 5A Central team, but with their young group of forwards, finishing is their Achilles heel.
I would like to think that PA parked-the-bus only for this game to stymie LRCA's possession style (to good effect, true) and normally play better soccer as they do have some talented players. Maybe someone who has seen other PA games this season could verify this?

I heard the same sort of thing happened when Lakeside played PA. I heard the possession fell in the favor of Lakeside but the game ended in a 1-1 draw. I was really surprised as well. Now that you bring it up, i'm curious too.

I haven't seen them play, but you are right. Their only losses are to FS Northside and Fayetteville and they're mowing down the conference slate. I can't speak for the level of competition they're facing, but they get the benefit of the doubt from me.

Assuming that you're talking about the boys, they lost to Hot Springs in kicks from the mark last night 2(11)-2(10).
The first round match ups between the West and the South boys are going to be awesome this year. I think you could easily argue that 7 of the top 8 teams come from those two conferences.

1. Maumelle
2. DeQueen
3. Hot Springs
4. Clarksville
5. Harrison
6. Lakeside
So 6 of the top 7 then. Valley View would fall somewhere in that group. Who else would you put in above those 7?
Apparently Harrison should not be on the list.......
How did Mills get into the state tournament on the boys side? In the bracket it says they are a 4 seed. I thought Beebe was the 4 seed?

I think its probably just a mistake because I'm pretty sure Beebe should be there instead

See I thought it was a mistake too, but Mills has a next game in maxpreps vs. Valley View. Maybe there is just a misunderstanding...

It must have been a mistake. It is fixed now.
