First post and I figured I give a little background about myself. I am looking to make the move to Arkansas to continue my coaching career. I have been fortunate in my career to this point and have been able to learn under some very talented coaches at the college and high school levels through Texas and I am currently a college women's assistant in Kansas. I grew up in the East Texas area and have always been impressed with the state of Arkansas high school basketball. I did want to hear from a few locals on your thoughts and if you knew of anyone else who made a similar change?
I am certified in Texas to Teach Technology courses as well as in Physical Education.
Gonna be hard finding a job right now
Yes just meant moving forward into the spring and summer.
Leadhill girls basketball coach was a asst boys coach in the kjccc for about a decade i think and made the move to leadhill about 3 years ago. Seems to be making the transition good.
Literally in the same boat. Currently coaching in the Dallas metroplex, but looking to make the move this summer after the school year ends. Glad to find this page as an extra resource of potential job openings.

This will be a great job for someone looking to take a team and establish themselves. I'm hearing all sorts of possibilities. Old, new, familiar. Look for them to take their time and get this right

With all the changes in the last few years, what would you suggest they do MUSTANG? Any names that you think can right the ship and stay clear of craziness?
I could think of a couple but I'm not going to put in on here. I have notified them of the opening.
I think we need an established Coach at this time. Someone that has a few years under their belt.
I think this could be a great job to have after the initial year in the program. Being a basketball school, it would allow a coach time to get their system in and make some noise after awhile if the players are there. Would love to see the list of who gets an interview when it is all said and done. This could be a job that leads to many openings.

Max Preps shows Two Rivers went 5-20 before last year. If he was there two years, he won 17 in year one. If you go from 17 to 4 there is clearly a talent issue. He must not be that bad if he took a 5 win team to 17 in one year..

In 15-16 the team went 18-10, then had the 5 win season the following year.
In 17-18 the team won the 17 games, then this year had a 4 win season.
The last box score of that 17 win season in 17-18, shows only two seniors playing. Both were the bulk of that team's scoring. Also had a freshman contribute, who would have been a sophomore this year.
All of this according to Maxpreps.
It's also worth noting the football team went 0-10 this past season. It could very well be just a down cycle of talent throughout the whole high school on the boys side.

The down cycle of talent is probably true.....I also hear that there is still a lot of hard feelings amongst the citizens of that school district coming from the 4 schools that were closed to form two Rivers...

Did they dribble into 5 consecutive live-ball turnovers before he said that? You may have seen them play once, but I've seen them play 20 times. They just weren't good at dribbling. Dribbling into two or three defenders with your head down and turning the ball over isn't helping your team ever

I'm not sure of his plans. I was told by multiple people that he wouldn't be back coaching the team next year. Tim's a good guy, so I'm sure he could land somewhere, if that's something he wanted to do.

I heard that the admin needed to make a change. Coach had many, many players walk away from the program in the past four to five years and several wishing not to return next year.
First of all that's a tough job cause you can't get the girls to play basketball that play volleyball. That wld immediately make them better so I'm sure he's battled that. It wouldn't surprise me if he wasn't interested in the BIC girls job I mean there is kind of a connection with Taylor.

That's not true. Soccer gets girls to play, and their season is in the middle of JO volleyball season. Trey Harding, the coach before Tim, had a great relationship with Margie, the volleyball coach, and didn't have a problem getting the volleyball girls out. If you are going to coach girls basketball at Valley View you better have a great relationship with Margie, which I've heard Tim does not. They finished the season with less than 10 players on the team and some of the best athletes walking the halls because of who the coach was, that's not my opinion thats facts related to me from other coaches in the district. Tim's not a bad coach and he's a good guy, so he's going to land somewhere. BIC May be perfect for him as he wouldn't have to deal with volleyball. Could be a refreshing start for him.

There a LOT more to it than that. Verifiable fact: 75% of that attrition occurs in junior high, before those kids ever make it to a senior high practice. hard to blame that on the senior high coaching staff.

Dead serious. The implication here being that maybe that attrition doesn't have anything to do with the basketball coaching staff. You indicated that you were giving facts. In reality, you were regurgitating what you heard.
Nobody (and I mean NOBODY) is any happier about who we assume will be the next head coach than I am, but to be fair to the former, the vast bulk of the kids that quit did so for reasons that didn't have anything to do with the coaching staff or with basketball in general.
I've had a front row seat for the whole affair for the last 5 years. I have a daughter that's a senior. I have another that's a freshman. FWIW, the freshman class is moving up 11 kids, all of whom were on their way and perfectly happy before any change in coaching staff. Coincidentally, only one of those 11 plays volleyball. I can give you a list of names of every kid that dropped out over the last 4 seasons, and at least 75% of those had exactly one thing in common. I'll also go out on a limb and say that those 75% were among the best female athletes on campus.
I can tell you without hesitation that with the exception of a couple personality conflicts over the last 4 years, the kids that have quit have quit for reasons that didn't involve the basketball coach. I personally know the kids. Heck, one of em was my oldest daughter - and her reasons for quitting didn't relate in any way to the coach.
Hawkins certainly has character flaws - kids quitting in the 8th grade to specialize in a different sport isn't one of em.

This job will be a "fun" one. The top two teams in that conference just played for state, with Melbourne returning everyone practically for the next two seasons. Riverside will have everyone back next year, as will Marmaduke. This conference is talented at the 9th-10th grade level, and that's where the this job falls. Has a healthy group coming up form jr high, just play in a rough conference where two good teams could be left at home come regionals. The wave is coming and they just need someone to ride out the storms. Not sure how big the field will be for this job, but I can think of a few people that could be interested.

To your first point...
I will take what I hear as fact, from people who work with these kids all day, before I take what an anonymous parent, on a message board says as fact.
The facts are...
Volleyball wins.
Softball wins.
Girls soccer wins.
Girls basketball won when Trey Harding was there.
Girls basketball won when Jason Smith was there.
*edit (The above isn't to insinuate that Hawkins hasn't won at Valley View, because he has had some success there)
I keep re-reading this and I'm not sure what your argument is...
I think it's been stated more than once in this thread that girls are quitting basketball to focus on another sport. Whether they do or they don't the fact remains that the best athletes, that can help the girls basketball team, aren't playing basketball.
Do you not agree that the head girls senior high basketball coach is hired to oversee the program 7-12? I doubt you disagree with that. Tim probably isn't to blame, but when you finish the season with 8-10 girls on a 4A/5A team, you are going to get the blame.
To your point of who his successor will be...I can agree with you. If she takes it, it will be great for Valley View senior high girls basketball.

I've hardly tried to remain anonymous. I clearly indicated that I have a senior daughter that played on that team and a freshman daughter that will play on it next season. I'm unique among parents of players on those teams in that regard. Granted, I'm not going to post my SSN on a public forum, but I don't have any reason to conceal my identity. has won there. He didn't have a winning season
this time around, but his record speaks for itself and will certainly hold up against those you mentioned above.
Quote from: Former, Coach Jacobs on March 12, 2019, 11:25:10 am
I keep re-reading this and I'm not sure what your argument is...
I think it's been stated more than once in this thread that girls are quitting basketball to focus on another sport. Whether they do or they don't the fact remains that the best athletes, that can help the girls basketball team, aren't playing basketball.
Glad you asked. What you said was: "
They finished the season with less than 10 players on the team and some of the best athletes walking the halls because of who the coach was, that's not my opinion thats facts related to me from other coaches in the district." I simply responded that there was more to it than that and that, in my opinion (based on what the kids, many of whom I've been close to, told me), the attrition didn't have anything to do with the basketball coaching staff. The fact that a kid chooses to specialize in the 8th grade doesn't mean that they quit because of "who the [senior high] coach was."
Quote from: Former, Coach Jacobs on March 12, 2019, 11:25:10 am
Do you not agree that the head girls senior high basketball coach is hired to oversee the program 7-12? I doubt you disagree with that. Tim probably isn't to blame, but when you finish the season with 8-10 girls on a 4A/5A team, you are going to get the blame.
Of course I agree, on both points. But I love this game, I love the kids that play it, and I genuinely care about the coaches that take their time to make a difference in these kid's lives. To that point, Coach Hawkins is no longer the head coach. That decision is final, and whether it was him, or the junior high coach, or the assistant coaches, or the boys coaches, I feel a sense of loyalty to anybody that has worked to help my kids. With that in mind, reading the text of a post that says, in essence, that those kids that quit did so because of who the head coach was, I feel compelled to disagree. He had a great record at Valley View, and succeeded many times when he should've failed. He's been a good coach and has been fair to my kids. That's what his legacy should be, and I think it only right to defend that legacy for a guy who had a great record and is no longer the head coach at the school.
Quote from: Former, Coach Jacobs on March 12, 2019, 11:25:10 am
To your point of who his successor will be...I can agree with you. If she takes it, it will be great for Valley View senior high girls basketball.
She's a rock star whom I trust implicitly. She's been a phenomenal mentor to my child, and I'd take a bullet for her, anytime, anywhere.

Heck, I dunno. I would think moving schools in the 10th grade would be a something I'd have to at least think over if I were a 16 year old youngster. Either way, he's an exceptional kid, athletics notwithstanding, so we'll certainly miss him.
He is enrolled at BIC and will be a huge addition for the next 2 years!! Should be some good talent coming up for the program and Coach Kinard!!!

Heard Elvis Middleton linked to a target for this job during state week.....Not sure if the interest is mutual though. And as small as those 3 schools are, it's coming for St Joe/Bruno-Pyatt/Western Grove....they'd be a mid-level 2a school the first cycle and probably drop back to 1a after all the angry parents move their kids to yellville, valley, and Marshall

I've heard from multiple people that Hoxie has reassigned head girls coach Mike Chipman to the boy's side, with the current boys coach getting into admin. Chip's assistant Scott Brown will be taking over the girl's program. Hoxie boy's could open up if Chipman decides to move on, which if I was him I would. 2 years removed from winning a state title. Most ridiculous thing I've heard this off-season.

She's retiring and going to spend more time with family. I'd like to see her return to coaching 4-5 years down the road 😜. She's one of the best.
Per Fearless Friday user B.G. On the 6A Basketball Board Kyle Adams at Fayetteville is retiring.
Brad Stamps should slide over into the head coaches chair. This should open up a Sr. Boys assistant job at Fayetteville.
Fayetteville will fill the assistant job from within. They have several good coaches in their system.

Anybody heard anything about the boys jobs that have been open for a little while like Jasper, Two Rivers, Foreman and South Side?
Foreman has filled their position. Heard Bee Branch has been turned down. Jasper and Two Rivers are interviewing this week.
Saw where Magnolia hired head coach for AD. Magnolia boys is now open i am guessing.
Two Rivers girls is now open. He went and took Batesville-Southside job.

I heard as of last week, they plan to keep all three high schools open, for now at least. However this makes it risky, because the new coach hired at Grove could possibly be RIF'd if they consolidated the high schools soon. Usually last one in is first one out. That will play a factor I would think in finding a coach. Yes they would be a 2A school but on the low end, and yes probably move quickly back down to 1A. Yellville already has busses going to Bruno and Pyatt.

That is a good hire IMO.
Coach Goers turned the boys' program around twice here. Now he gets to try it with the girls.
He will have a veteran team with four starters returning including three two-year starters and a pretty decent junior high group coming up.
Business is about to pick up.

Jessieville hired Todd Huff for the Sr. Girls Assistant job. He has volunteered with the Jessieville boy's program for two years, and was Golf and Asst. Baseball at Jessieville.
I imagine that BIC, Manila, Paragould, and Jonesboro might all fill their openings by the end of next week if not sooner. Gosnell and Armorel can be added to that list as well. NEA always seems to be a domino effect. Hearing that Harrisburg has a Boys Assistants job open. Didnt fill the position this last year, but are looking to this year.

I expect this to be the norm soon for most of the smallest schools.
It's going to be crunch time for a lot of small schools, with the new salary requirements. The state is funding some but not all of this.

BIC has not announced a coach at this time. They do have a meeting Thursday & then it will be announced.
I see Sean Caldwell's name listed. I do know he was interviewed. Someone must have some inside info.
Caldwell was in football this year at Cedar Ridge. He was at Arkansas Christian Academy a few years ago. Won the State Title in boys there. Didn't know he wanted back into basketball though. I don't think that school Caldwell won at is AAA sanctioned. I think its in that Private/Christian league. But he won it in Boy's basketball, if I'm not mistaken.

There are a lot of good young coaches in the state that are in situations that aren't ideal. If people took more chances on these guys and stopped going after "the names," those coaches would have a chance to show how talented they are. Good luck to Coach Caldwell!

So are you still confirming BIC hired Caldwell as Sr Girls Coach? Everyone I talk to around the school says a decision won't be made until at the end of the week at the earliest.
LR Central has an opening for Sr. Boys Assistant.
Surprised it is taking Wonderview so long to fill vacancy. It has been open for quite a while now. Although they won't be as dominant as they have been the last eight years, they should still be somewhat competitive.

Surprised it is taking Wonderview so long to fill vacancy. It has been open for quite a while now. Although they won't be as dominant as they have been the last eight years, they should still be somewhat competitive.
The way they treat coaches over there is sketchy at best.

BIC Sr Girls? Confirmed hire or not????
Chill out and don't get in a bunch. It isn't confirmed because they don't have a board meeting until Thursday of this week. At that point, he will be recommended. It is basically a sure thing.
Then you'll have another coach you can run off with your unrealistic expectations. Isn't this like the 8th coaching change in 3-4 years over all sports?
Dude your the one that needs to chill out!! Wow it's just a question and apparently no one wants to answer it but just make assumptions. If he's the coach then great but again just trying to see if it's confirmed or a rumor? As far as the expectations I don't have any idea what your talking about. It's not hard to see that our program has been down lately and we don't expect a State run but just want facts.
I have an inside source that confirmed it last week. It could change. If it does, I will make the change.
That's all I was asking for

I agree,
Though it's not the best of times in Tiger Land, lame duck supt. Some disagreements among the board. A declining enrollment is also beginning to take its toll on finances.
Both Junior High teams were unimpressive this year

Word has it the Supt. wanted a coach that was willing to go in the classroom. That limits your pool of choices.
I think all coaches should have to teach, they did in my day!
I agree papa but it is my understanding that he did a much better job than his predecessor.
What quality coach would even consider Wonder View the way they have treated coaches lately? Also, what's up with Earle? They've had some turnover lately for a place that wins so much recently.

I think they both did a good job. Sometimes it's hard to win in those loaded conferences. But then sometimes there are coaches that are loaded in weaker conferences for years that just can't win meaningful games

Interesting. I know for a fact that a coach with multiple state championships, a state championship in basketball and two state championship in another sport applied and was told he was a finalist. He's won pretty much every where he's been. He doesn't fit in either of those two categories you mentioned. Sounds like he's dodging a bullet if he isn't hired in that district

He's the son of the newly retired AD. He is from there. He's a good coach, stuck in a brutal conference, in a county where the best basketball players want to play at Tech. He knows what he is doing. They will still compete for the state title.
He is a very good coach.
If Paragould was smart they would look to NWA for their new coach and bring home a former Paragouldian. Who knows if he would consider it but he might to get back closer to his family.

Have you actually done research on him? You don't want a coach who took a job in high school and competed with the players he had? One the also coached at the collegiate level in the SEC? One that has been around guys that have made it to the NBA? That experience can speak for itself? Did you see the dudes he had at Paragould? Did you know how many games he competed in? Have you coached high school basketball? You said you're tired of hearing he's a "good coach" or someone did, but what more do you want out of a resume? You take what talent you have? Was he going to beat Jonesboro(state champs twice in his time), Marion(state champs), West Memphis (State Runner-up)? I'm just interested in knowing what more you or anyone else could want and who applied that was a better candidate?
The facts behind most of these hires won't be seen for 2-3 years, by then it's too late. It's interesting when most of these coaches leave their current school it's almost always perceived as a loss for them and a gain for the new employer. Sometimes you have to dig a little deeper to see the whole picture. Do the boosters, administration, parents or players try to convince them to stay? What is the current status of their programs? Look beyond the wins/losses because that can be misleading.
I can't help but think of Houston Nutt to Ole Miss....we all tried to tell them but they wouldn't listen. All they had to do was look a little closer, but they didn't and found out the hard way. ;)

Dude the guy just got hired on the team that will be favored to win state for 3 years in a row and he is coming off of a 0-14 conference record. Forgive me if I'm a little skeptical. That is gonna be strange for anybody from the outside looking in. Then you throw in that he's the AD's son.
As long as he doesn't have Ford playing high post like they did some last year he will be ok. That was a head scratcher
Digging deeper you will find he was the head manager at Missouri in charge of film coordination and such. Not sure what roll if any he actually had in practice or games. Yes he was "AROUND" kids that went on to play at the next level. How much did he contribute. While at Clinton his record was mediocre. He then went to Paragould and ended his career with record of just barely above .500. Keep digging.
Some of these jobs have been open for a long time. Wonder what the deal is?

Y'all are nuts. Did you see the kids he had and the games he played in it? If you ask any coach (not a fearless poster) but any coach in the state, they will tell you this is a great hire regardless of who his dad is. I am wanting to know who would have been a better hire? Did you see the talent he had? No knock on those kids, but if he has nothing to work with, he has to find a way to be competitive and he did just that. He was very respected in that conference. The only ones that don't know are the people that aren't an actual coach in high school. You tell me, if you had the talent he did, would you have went 1-13? I don't know his role in an entirety at Missouri, but yes it does make a difference watching practices EVERY SINGLE DAY and learning from coaches. Yes he walked into a gold mine, but I'd bet he would've taken that job had they went 0-14 and will still be there after those guys are gone. Recruiting wise, those kids should be excited and thankful because Coach Lindsey knows the game of recruiting and will help those young men out tremendously.

Yea blame it on the kids for sucking. Heard this a lot over the years. Part of being a great coach is developing the players you have.
Haha! Way to make me sound like a rude person. No, but the kids he had didn't have near the talent. Don't try to sound super smart by saying it like I'm blaming the kids.

Never heard of him. Was he at Fayetteville this past season?
Head coach of Fayetteville White(9th grade), Sr girls assistant. Was at Brinkley from approx 2014-2016. And was an assistant at Shiloh Christian when they won state in 2011...Per his bio on Fayetteville web site
He coached at Fayetteville this season? I do not see him listed under their coaches on their website.
He was out of coaching this past season. Prior few years he had been an asst girls varsity coach and one of the two 9th grade coaches at FHS.

That's a big move. McCord is a great man, just hasn't been able to reach Nettleton's expectations. I'm ready to see if Deaton can translate that junior high success at the next level.

Lake village hired their assistant Darius Green for boys HC
Hearing that up in NEA, Harrisburg has Assistant Boys Basketball/Assistant Football open. Teaching area either PE or ALE
I am hearing Paragould has narrowed it down to 2 TITANS of Arkansas Hi School Basketball, should be very interesting.
Heard Wonderview hired Alaina Riley. Have not been able to confirm. Kind of a head scratcher.
Why is it a head scratchier?
Why leave Mayflower for Wonderview? I know it's going from assistant to head coach but it's more than likely a big pay decrease and having to coach 3 teams. On Wonderview's side of it why settle on an inexperienced coach considering some of the names that put in for the job. I'm sure she will do fine, whoever gets the job will be ok. They will still be competitive for a couple of more years just not dominant.
Also, like I said I haven't been able to confirm yet so it may not matter.

Hazen named their defensive coordinator - Vincent - head boys basketball...sure sign program cares about basketball ::).
He is leaving, from what I understand, so they are trying to fill that. No idea on girls coach.

Do y'all think Kim Jenkins could be an option for the boys job at Har Ber? It would be out of the box but I have sources in the central office that says one of the Deputy Superintendents is floating the idea and trying to gain support.
The leading names for that are off the radar a bit.
One name is known statewide and the other more local.
Zimmerman and Deffenbaugh. Everyone knows that. Kimberly jumping over to the boys is real. The AD wants to hire Zim but Assistant Superintendent is trying to get Rollins to make a big splash and move over to the boys. I'm kin to her but I don't know about this move.
They inquired about other coaches but got rebuffed. Lots in play there for that hiring.
I've not heard your inputted info, of course her son is on the boys varsity.
I will add that many schools are loathe to laterally move their girls coach to their boys team as it implies it's a better job. Many do not want that perception.
I don't know if it's a better gig or not. I know that the Har Ber admin sees themselves as progressive and not bound by labels/ traditions. Jared Cleveland is looking to move into Mr. Rollins chair when he retires and this would be his signature power play AND Kimberly wants to coach her son.
Cleveland has back channeled with the BIG BIG money crowd that support Har Ber and they have given him permission to proceed without fear of retribution from Mr. Rollins.
It's not going to be her.
