Even though I'm a diehard Cardinals fan, Ernie Banks was a great ambassador for baseball. Rest in peace, Mr. Cub. They're playing two in heaven

I loved the 30 for 30 "Unguarded"... it showed him at Fresno State when Chris Herren played there.

Minnie Minoso, 89.  White Sox legend, one of only two players to appear in a MLB game in five different decades (40s-80s).  Should be in the HOF.

RIP

Good ball player and definitely a Chicago legend but, for the younger folks on FF, the four decade thing is a little misleading.  He played in 1,830 games between '49 and '64.  Nine of those games were in '49.  His regular playing career ended in '64 at 38.  Came back in '76 and had 8 plate appearances in 3 games at 50.  Came back in '80 and had 2 plate appearances in 2 games at 54.

Here're his HOF ballot results:

1969 BBWAA ( 1.8%)
1986 BBWAA (20.9%)
1987 BBWAA (19.9%)
1988 BBWAA (21.1%)
1989 BBWAA (13.2%)
1990 BBWAA (11.5%)
1991 BBWAA ( 8.6%)
1992 BBWAA (16.0%)
1993 BBWAA (15.8%)
1994 BBWAA ( 9.9%)
1995 BBWAA (14.3%)
1996 BBWAA (13.2%)
1997 BBWAA (17.8%)
1998 BBWAA (16.1%)
1999 BBWAA (14.7%)

Who is the other 5 decade guy?

Many other 4 decade guys, notably Nolan Ryan.  The only other 5 decade player was Nick Altrock, a pitcher for Louisville (which was a major league team on his debut), the Red Sox, White Sox and Senators from 1898-1933.

Admittedly, the 70s and 80s appearances for Minoso were publicity vehicles initiated by then White Sox owner Bill Veeck.  But getting a hit when in his 50s, still impressive.

Thanks, I typed 4 in error but meant the question as a followup to your reference to 5.  No question getting a hit over 50 is an accomplishment and MM is in an exclusive club.

Tough Week for the Sports world for sure.  We lost that kid from Fla also.

The death of former UF football player Chris Johnson has been ruled a suicide.  22 is way to young to commit suicide.

The Astros trivia tweet today was Ryan and longevity related.  Thought you might like it:

Father/son combos struck out by Nolan Ryan - Bonds, Griffey, Alomar, Francona, Wills, Schofield, McRae.
