Inside Look:
Kickoff, 7:00 p.m. at Blakemore Field
Records, Van Buren 0-0; Alma 0-0
FearlessFriday.Com Rankings, Alma is ranked 7th in Class 5A, Van Buren is unranked
Last Meeting, Alma won 47-21 in 2012

The Crawford County Rivals will open up the 2013 season at Blakemore Field on September 6th at 7:00 p.m. as a new head coach will be initiated into the storied Crawford County Rivalry between Van Buren and Alma.

New Airedale Head Coach Doug Loughridge will look to stop the trend of first-year coaches losing the opening game of the season. The last first-year coach to win the series was Van Buren's Dennis Pendergrass whose only victory (1-9) was a 14-13 upset of the eventual Class AAA Champion Airedales. Former Alma Coach Todd Dilbeck experienced the first year jinx in a 16-14 loss at Van Buren during the 2007 season.

The great thing about Coach Loughridge is that his record has prepared him for this transition with an impressive 68-9 Record at Charleston with Five League Titles (2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012) as well as Two State Championships (2008, 2011). He does not need to sell the fans of Alma anything. As with former Airedale and Legendary Coach Frank Vines, hard-nosed football wins. Fancy football helps, but hard-nosed football on both offense and defense still will produce victories. It is a physical brand of power offensive football with a run-oriented scheme that will be dictated by controlling the line of scrimmage. It is old school, "old man football" that will replace the fast-paced Spread that fuels many local schools today.

Old Man Football works because it is first and foremost, ball control. The Airedales will attempt to keep the ball longer than the Pointers. It is not rocket science. If you keep the ball longer than the other team, you have a better chance to secure the win. Coach Loughridge is a punishing style that doesn't dive too deep with finesse and deception. It is foolhardy to argue with the results.

The Airedales will be bringing it back in a sense that they will make opponents not just feel them on Friday Nights, but also on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. The game of football is often decided by who is more mentally and physically tougher. The way the Airedales will be playing will be to put a body on a body and drive off the ball. That style can and will wear down opponents, especially late in the season where the Airedales have struggled the most. Coach Loughridge's team are stout in the season's last full month were his Tigers were 19-5.

Since arriving in Van Buren in 2011, Coach Brooks Coatney has been trying to establish the magic of former Coach Mike Lee's 2010 season in which the Pointers notched seven victories, including their first home playoff victory since winning State in 1996. Beating the Airedales was huge in setting up that momentum and tone for the rest of the season as the Pointers vaulted out of the gate at 4-0 and had secured a spot in the playoffs by October. Unfortunately for Van Buren, last season only procured one win. Coatney mastered the Spread Offense playing for early innovator Coach Ronnie Peacock while at Greenwood. Everything is simple, but it must be executed well. Coatney passed for 500 yards in a 1998 playoff semifinal game against Osceola and was the first Arkansas QB with 600 career completions. Coatney is a big believer in consistency and will continue to build upon that with the Pointers.

Paw-Paw, I know we are reverting back to our smash mouth defense under Coach Loughridge, but our offense is still being controlled by Coach Gunter correct? He had some really great games last year using his offense. Are we returning to a smash mouth offense, or expect to see the same type of offense we did last year? The offense against Camden Fairview was amazing, and if we can execute like that, I'm all for it.

7AFBFAN

I noticed in RPS ranking Charleston is quite a bit ahead of Alma. That was surprising.

cat14

Battle for Bone will be a good game. Alma should be favorite with really good players, but anything, and I mean anything can happen in this Game!

Chip

I wonder if there is extra incentive for Loughridge since he was bypassed for the Van Buren job that went to Coatney.

Also, is it true one of the assistant coaches at VB has a son that plays for Alma?  If it's true, I find that interesting.

Good luck to both teams on the upcoming season.

Good article Paw-Paw. Alma is my pick in this one.

P.F.G.

Talked to some players and it looks like it will be the same style of play on O from last year. Little more emphasis on D and larger emphasis on getting stronger in the off season.

Alma takes this Years Bone. Just too much for Pointers. Both will improve in the coming years and the Rivalry will remain a Good One. Both Teams have improved significantly with off season hiring of proven Defense oriented Coaches.

NO CONTEST in this one.... Just like years past, Alma will once again be the pointers doormat...please pick up your trash on the way out.

You seem to be well-liked on here.

Is Steve Perry in jail or did he finally realize that he contributes nothing to FF?

Go Postal

Steve once told me a story on when he was in Bangkok.  He showed them on how to slap the Gooch properly.  So I guess it is worldwide on "Slapping the Gooch".

Paw-Paw

I smell "trash" and it's consistent with the backwash of Greenwood fans, but with the ignorant allure of a nobody...I know!

Tonight's weather made me realize just how close it is to football. I am so ready!

I have had so many various things occur over the last six months, only a few posters know what those issues are, I am ready for a new semester of beginnings. It was a tough go shortly after Easter, but I have found new passion and purpose within my sphere of influence and I wouldn't change a thing looking back.

Here is to another season of new beginnings!

Greenwood is concerned this year. Greenwood knows that they are hobbled a bit and if they don't beat Alma this year, the streak is going to run the other way.  Y'all are toast and you know it.

Alma ends the streak.

I'm glad scrimmages are not indicative to how a season will be played out. If so, SS should go 3-7. Thinks that's going to happen.....what I thought. Let me correct you on one thing...it might as well be Satan's house cause VB always did look like a hell-hole.

+1 on the jail comment.

When all's said and done, it will be like year's past. Alma spanking the shit out of VB.

I realize after your recent incarceration that spanking fills up a large part of your day but this friday night the only spanking given  out will be by the pointers. And you can only sprinkle sugar on top of the pressbox for so long. You still play in a dump. No way in heck alma wins in 1st two weeks.

How many games has VB won in the last five years. I can count them on one hand. Only thing good about VB is that they have an Alma boy on staff. He's the only class they have.

Your meaningless dribble is getting old.

Why don't you just save everyone some time and delete your account.

And your post are as irrelevant as your sports programs are. What in the heck has Alma done in that weak arse league? Yes its nice to see that at least one of your ex employees is smart enough to get out before he retires. You bring nothing but pure ignorance to this board. Put up or shut up big mouth.

Wow.....it sure is quite over here for it to be game day.

But Meh....Alma is playing VanBuren.   Game week starts next week.   This must be warmup.

Alma wins.

GrizzlyBaseball

VB-Alma has become a rivalry in name only. Nobody in VB actually thinks they can win the game any more.  Alma is turning its attention to Greenwood as it's primary rival.  Seems to be personal with Loughridge.

P.F.G.

Van buren hasn't mattered to the last 10 classes that have come through Alma. It's been built up some because after months of going against your own team, you want to just hit someone else. Alma has been ahead of VB in coaching and players for this amount of time.

As I read that it got me that this is how GW feels about alma. At least we kept it competitive a couple years:)

Maybe moving into a conference battle with VB will return it but since Vines left it hasn't been as meaningful. Believe me, coach Vines loved this week and really hated that school 11 miles away.

That was the MAIN rival for the 'Dales back in the day. It'll be nice to get out and have fun on the sidelines again! Can't wait to break out the camera and phone to post stuff for AN!

That fair catch interference call in the 3rd quarter was a terrible call.  Was a game changer, too.  Really swung momentum and Van Buren bounced back to make it a game after falling behind by two TDs.  Alma should've been starting a drive around Van Buren's 30 yard line, and instead VB retained possession and turned it into a TD.  There were three or four other calls along the Van Buren sideline that I thought were really iffy too.  And that little stretch in the 3rd quarter where we got called for a penalty on what felt like every play, ending with the terrible fair catch interference, was really bad.

Other than that, can't complain since we won.  It was a sloppy game, but that's to be expceted in the first game of the year.  Thought we adjusted and executed on offense better as the game progressed.

I love the Airedales!   But check out the Goblin's thread in week one! ;)

FINAL: Alma 35, Van Buren 27

Alma seemed to be very reserved this week from what I was apparently seeing/hearing during spring, summer, as well as early fall drills.

Alma's attitude is reflecting the leadership of the staff and the enthusiasm that Coach L has brought with him from Alma. The kids were having fun and on BOTH SIDES of the ball, they are hitting H-A-R-D! Another key aspect of the conditioning? The kids were not running to the water coolers as much as they did the last 5 seasons.

Greenwood is already building up. Home opener, breaking the streak(s), and continue on to improve to be 2-0. The 'Dales are ready. The staff is ready. The fans are ready.

39-1 this time next week you slobbering blabber mutts.

1st drive was great. The rest of the half was a little rough offensively, as to be expected. Credit to VB's defense for holding our running game down in the 1st half. Defensively, after the 1st drive, we did great in the 1st half.

3rd quarter was very, very sloppy and very, very long. I thought there were some bogus calls, but doesn't every fan think that? The fair catch interference call still baffles me. 4th quarter was much better offensively. The Airedale defense made great adjustments in the 2nd half to VB's run game. Their passing game was shutout pretty well too, but they kept getting big plays which led to their scores. The defense can really only be credited with giving up three touchdowns. The other one was off a special teams mistake which gave VB the ball inside the 5.

VB was solid, but will still be a bottom feeder in the incredibly tough 7A West. Good sized QB with a good arm. Talented running back. Defense wasn't bad, but nothing outstanding.

Things I hope to see Alma improve on:
The snap from center to QB
Punt returns in general
Defense not giving up big pass plays

Things I was pleasantly surprised with:
E. Burris's passing game was excellent
Curtis Lloyd is a beast
Jake Folkerts is playing football and is a beast

I put a slow motion clip PawPaw shot over on the Nation's Facebook Page. I know, we won move on,  but there's no excuse for missing a call when we can see the play through a camera view port that's only 2" square.

Garbage. The team took out the trash at Blakemore Field, just glad that penalty and TD didn't decide this game.
