QuoteI'm starting to see discussions of this subject elsewhere, so...why not start now?

What I expect:

Title Contenders: Dardanelle, Ozark--It'll be the Duke Walker show in Hillbilly Country this season, with establishing the supporting roles being the biggest question. Expect the Lizards to be the toughest challenger in conference play.

On the Fence: Pottsville, Waldron--These were the top two teams in 7G play last year, and how quickly those players on both sides develop as 8G'ers will be a factor this season.

Playing Spoiler: Mena--I'm only putting them here because I don't know that much about them, but stepping in for last year's freshmen will be a tough act to follow.

Looking to Surprise: Dover--I haven't seen enough from the Pirates to inspire confidence, but you may never know.

Missing in Action: Elkins, Subiaco--In a mix of convenience and prescience, the Elks have decided to caucus with the 4A-1 in JH play the next two seasons. The Trojans, meanwhile, are trying to poach Decatur's 2A-4 schedule.

I think u nailed it man. It will come down to Ozark and Dardanelle. Both were missing several starters in that 1st team camp and still looked levels above the rest I've seen. I thought Ozark would finish undefeated last year. Will Sanders play much of a role this year on Sr. High X? That young man was very impressive!

Gray lizard

I went to watch a team camp where Dardanelle and Pottsville were a part of.  Dardanelle looks to be a solid team.  Pottsville has lost to many players I am afraid.  It may be a long season for them.  Pottsville has a few good players but lack in depth and line play.

The Coach

What would've been pottsvilles best 8th grader to be is now a SandLizard. His older brother will be the starting QB for the Sr High Lizards.

He's mostly trained in the same positions as Graham, but I wouldn't be surprised if the coaches find a way to work him in somewhere.

Yes his dad got a job in the Dardanelle school district ROTC.  He would have contributed but I do not think he would have started as a running back, but most likely would have started on defense.  I do not think he will get as much playing time at Dardanelle as he would have at Pottsville.  He does have potential to be a very good player. I think his brother was already in the Dardanelle school district.

His 2 older brothers and sister are at or have graduated from Dardanelle.

Here are the benefit games I've confirmed so far.

Thursday 8/16
Dardanelle v Booneville @ Russellville, 6:00

Monday 8/20
Ftn. Lake @ Waldron, 5:30 (precedes HS scrimmages)
Alma/Farmington @ Ozark, 6:00
Lamar @ Dover, 6:00

Let's see if we can find anything for the other two...!

Gray lizard

Pottsville @ Clinton 08/23 7 pm I think.

Dardanelle @ Gentry, 5:30 (A second scrimmage? This may count as an actual game now; stay tuned...)

Let's see if we can find anything for the other three...!

Dardanelle @ Gentry is an actual game for Dardanelle at least since they are scrimmaging booneville.

The Coach

Dardanelle and Booneville played a half with Dardanelle winning 14-0

Gray lizard

Yes and Dardanelle looks to have a very good team with a lot of speed.  I expect them to be in the hunt for the 4A conference title this year.

x14113

I just saw on Twitter that Ozark is looking for an opponent to replace Subi.

Will the Trojans even play a JH schedule this year?

(The schedule on Subi's site reflects no changes.)

No they aren't cause Dard is looking for a wk 8 now as well

Sigmund Sauer

So, just when their weather postponed SR. High scrimmage against Paris showed a glimmer (word "glimmer" heavily emphasized) of hope, they shutter the JR. High program? Someone make the Abbey behave........

x14113

So it seems that Subi saw an opportunity when Decatur went 8-man and is working to replace a 4A-4 schedule with a 2A-4 slate.

So that make two teams that are MIA this cycle.

SMH, impeccable timing. Do they even have Summer workouts?

HSfan

They do have summer workouts but only for kids in the area. Coaches never have a finalized JH/SH roster until after the first day of school. That probably also doesn't account for the new 7-9 grade kids that think they want to play and then quit the first week.

I've heard they have 18-19 kids on JH and the majority of those numbers are 7th graders.

Gray lizard

That is just not right.  So teams are now stuck with an open date.  A 5 game conference. I don't think they should be allowed to play at all if they don't play conference games.

x14113

It's looking like Ozark has work to do on D. Too many missed tackles, for one.

The O is capable of moving the ball...unless the snap goes over the QB's head.

Gray lizard

So their QB takes the snap from under center? (8)
From what I have heard and seen Dardanelle has to be a strong favorite for the 4.

x14113

Ozark has filled its week 5 opening.

They'll be going to Hendrix to play Mtn. Home.

As a side effect, the 7G will now play that week.

x14113

With one day left until kickoff:

Week 0 Game

Dardanelle @ Gentry

Let's see how the younger folks adjust to defending the single wing...!

I would think Dardanelle with the speed they have finds a way to get to the ball.  Gentry better stop their runners and passing at the line of scrimmage.

The Coach

Not sure Gentry is running the single wing in junior high.

The Coach

7th grade
Gentry 22 Dardanelle 6

JH
Dardanelle 36 Gentry 14

Gray lizard

Pottsville Jr boys looked ok against Clinton.  They played decent defense, but are small on the line on both offence and defense.  They have trouble maintaining a drive, but have the ability to break a big play with the speed in the back field.

Sigmund Sauer

Any word on Mena Jr. High? Anyone see them in team camps, scrimmage, etc.

Gray lizard

Pottsville is playing Johnson County West Side this week.  I have never seen them play.  What can they expect?  What kind of offence/defense.

x14113

Currently, the Rebels run the spread on offense, and a 3-4 base on defense. They might use something different against the Dead-T, though.

Westside is mediocre at best in its own conference. The Apaches should have little trouble against them.

And with that:

Week 1 Games

Charleston @ Dardanelle
Atkins @ Dover
De Queen @ Mena
Ozark @ Booneville
Pottsville @ Westside
Mansfield @ Waldron

x14113

Ain't no weather delay long enough...!

Ozark 30
Booneville 14

Ozark @ Booneville JH game has been postponed due to lightning. It'll be made up in Week 10.

The Coach

Dardanelle and Charleston cancelled until week 10

Gray lizard

Pottsville 34 (or 38I cant remember for sure) Johnson County WS 18.

Did Booneville jr high win or lose against Clarksville on the 23rd? Their Hudl pages don't agree on the outcome.

My wife said Dover bus was at Clarksville last night.  X shows Atkins anyone know?

Thanks I was questing what she saw.  Good thing I kept my mouth shut.

x14113

Yeah, having VBall games on the same night might get confusing in a few places.

I saw a Lincoln bus parked next to Booneville's gym as I was driving up to park. I would've sworn I saw a Magazine bus drive up, too.

According to Glenn M. Parrish of the Booneville Democrat:

Clarksville 34
Booneville 26

That makes sense. From what I've seen, Clarksville JH is better than last year and Booneville has taken a step back. I'll try not to derail from the 4A track much more.

If the Bearcats are taking a step back in the presence of Randon Ray, that is a major red flag.

Ozark will see first-hand how much the Panthers have improved. The Hillbillies blew them out in 7G play two years back.

Mansfield @ Waldron might not have been played last week.

At last check, they were trying to ride out the storm, but nothing beyond.

In other news:

Mena 20
De Queen 6

Atkins 28
Dover 8

x14113

Gordon could be a major impact this week. Don't be surprised if we get another wave of washouts.

With that:

Week 2 Games

Prairie Grove @ Dardanelle
Dover @ Danville
Russellville @ Mena
Ozark @ Clarksville
Booneville @ Pottsville
Waldron @ Paris
