The Manila vs Harding Academy matchup In the first round will be a good one. A good team will be eliminated quickly! I look for Hoxie to take the girls side of this region fairly easily.

Hoxie girls should win it all this year, they're fundamentally sound💯

I agree. Not even close.

Yeah, this is an extremely tough region on the boys side. 4 great first round games.

Region 3 tournament in Trumann boys matchups

Wednesday. Feb 20th 2019

Rivercrest vs Riverview 5:30
Osceola vs Bald Knob 8:30

Thursday Feb 21st 2019

Trumann vs Tuckerman 8:30
Manila vs Harding Academy 5:30
Winners in bold.

Bald Knob beat Tuckerman and played HA close at home end of January.

After watching the Seminoles on Friday I think they roll over Bald Knob.

I think Crest will win in a very close game.

Tuckerman will get by Trumann in the best game of the 1st round.

Manila vs. HA is a toss up.  Whomever loses this one will be very disappointed not making state tourney.

They've beaten Tuckerman once, and have played Harding Academy close twice. Also, have beaten a good England team.

Riverveiw will beat crest! Tuckerman will win only toss up is Manila and HA! Osceola will win

Fatbackhawgballz

Bald Knob is no push over. #24 creates things for them that wouldn't normally be there. He has a sour attitude though and if you get him rattled he will make mistakes. #23 to me is a very solid player. The rest of the guys seem to go as those two go. They're very capable of beating anyone though.

birddawg1986

Manila or HA will be playing long toss on Friday. It will be a disappointing end to one of these two teams season.

RedWolf275

I'll take
Osceola over Bald Knob
Riverview over Rivercrest
Manila over Harding Academy
Tuckerman over Trumann

But I wouldn't be shocked if I was 0-4.
Great first round matchups

Here's my breakdown of these first-round matchups. It won't be as detailed as my 4A East analysis because I haven't watched as much 3A ball this year, but here goes nothing.

Boys

Game 1: Riverview (1st 2) vs. Rivercrest (4th 3), 5:30 p.m. Wednesday
Riverview better keep its hot streak going because Rivercrest showed last year it can be dangerous in the postseason, especially if Demilon Brown takes over a game like he can. Of course, Riverview made a similarly deep run in the 4A postseason last year, although J.T. Smith isn't walking through that door. The Colts having their best player from last season could be the difference. It's hard to believe the same Riverview team that got destroyed at Westside in their regular-season finale went on to win the district tournament of a good basketball conference. My pick: Rivercrest

Game 2: Osceola (1st 3) vs. Bald Knob (4th 2), 8:30 p.m. Wednesday
The Bulldogs have been up-and-down at times this year, and losing at home in the 3A-2 semifinals was not what they wanted. Their ability to bounce back will be tested by an Osceola team that is better than the sum of its parts. The Seminoles' main threats are their constant defensive pressure, PG Dan Newson running the offense and Zion Spears potentially burning opponents from outside. My pick: Osceola

Game 3: Manila (2nd 3) vs. Harding Academy (3rd 2), 5:30 p.m. Thursday
This is definitely the best opening-round matchup of the 3A regionals, if not all of the regionals. Manila was on top of the 3A-3 for most of the year and Harding Academy didn't lose to anybody lower than 4A during the regular season, but because both stumbled in their district tournaments, one isn't going to the state tournament. The Wildcats feature senior guard Grant Patterson, who might've been the best player on Southside's loaded team a year ago. Manila has three-year starter Brock Birmingham, but the player to watch is junior PG Daley Belew. The Lions have only a six-player rotation on most nights, and HA coach Brad Francis tends to cherish depth on his teams. This game will depend on how tight it is called. My pick: Manila

Game 4: Tuckerman (2nd 2) vs. Trumann (3rd 3), 8:30 p.m. Thursday
These two teams just seem to gravitate to one another, and it's been the Wildcats with the upper hand despite the Bulldogs racking up a ton of wins over the past three years. Tuckerman doesn't hide what it wants to do. It wants to win with the trio of Bo Roberson, Ke Roberson and Ben Keton. Trumann counters with super-athlete Ben Turner, but it will be up to the rest of the Wildcats to provide support. The fact that Trumann is playing the prime-time game at home could give the Wildcats an advantage. My pick: Tuckerman

Girls

Game 1: Harding Academy (1st 2) vs. Corning (4th 3), 4 p.m. Wednesday
Glad to see Corning back in the regional tournament after what happened to that girls basketball program this past calendar year. But this looks like a mismatch on paper. Coach Rusty Garner runs a quality program with the Lady Wildcats, and he's got more talent playing his way this year. They'll be a team no one wants to face next week at state. My pick: Harding Academy

Game 2: Hoxie (1st 3) vs. Bald Knob (4th 2), 7 p.m. Wednesday
The Lady Mustangs are riding a program-best 20-game winning streak and got better with the addition of ninth-grader Jaecie Brown last week. The Lady Mustangs have been without star forward Sydney Gillham since Jan. 31 with a knee injury, but coach Mike Chipman, who led them to the state title two years ago, hasn't ruled her out for the rest of the year. Hoxie will be on high alert for a Bald Knob team that has been rock solid over the years. My pick: Hoxie

Game 3: Trumann (2nd 3) vs. Riverview (3rd 2), 4 p.m. Thursday
The Lady Wildcats go as Mallory Hartley goes. Hartley was part of Bay's run to the Class 1A title two years ago, and she will not want her career to come to an end. Riverview will have to rely on Abbie Jiles and her 22 points per game even if she's been dealing with illness. She missed the 3A-2 semifinal loss to Tuckerman, and the Lady Raiders did not look the same. They will have their hands full at Trumann. My pick: Trumann

Game 4: Tuckerman (2nd 2) vs. Osceola (3rd 3), 7 p.m. Thursday
An intriguing matchup between two teams not many thought would make the state tournament. The Lady Bulldogs will have standout guard Natalie Shelton looking to make one last statement in her career. The Lady Seminoles have experienced a pleasantly surprising turnaround under first-year coach Shane Young, and they will be motivated to be playing hosts of the 3A tourney at Seminole Arena. My pick: Tuckerman

Great job Slawdawg.

One small correction is that Daley Belew is a Junior.  Not being critical just wanted to let everyone know he still has another year.

Thanks. I thought Belew was a junior last year, but I guess I misremembered. It's been fixed now.

Looking at their roster they only have 2 players under 6'0" their 6'6" guard makes creates plays for them.

I'm a former Seminole and love Osceola, but if Manila gets by HA they are taking this regional. They won't have the same foul trouble, as the previous game, in a rematch with the Seminoles. If Manila gets by HA I think they make a deep run in the state tourney. Coach Wimberley is as good as it gets.

What foul trouble Manila had playing Osceola?

I think he was referring to when 2 or 3 of our guys fouled out and those three hurt big time

Or the 4 offensive fouls called on Manila's best player.

That's the excuse you guys bringing up about that game? What about the missed free throws in clutch time situations? They had plenty of chances to win the game. It's a problem when Osceola beats Manila at Manila huh? I guess it was a shocker to most lol

Nah, I don't want to take anything away from the Osceola kids. They made the plays when it mattered most.
