Man, a part of me wonders what effect my banter will have on other threads one night before kickoff.

Well, we're about to find out.

Robinson (15) @ Ozark
On paper, this has one of the biggest angles in the playoffs: The #3 scoring team in 4A travels to the Cabin to face the #1 team in points allowed. However, this game isn't being played in a vacuum: Having two conference mates join you at the gobbles is a much better look than going it alone. If the Hillbillies are to be regarded as one of the better programs in 4A, this is the kind of game that they must win, and even with their track record of keeping good offenses in check, the bottom line is that the senior-laden Senators are the best team they've faced since at least Booneville. Strangely, this isn't the first time Ozark has faced such circumstances: This is virtually a repeat of the leadup to the R1 game against Ashdown two years ago, something its seniors should have no trouble recalling.

Dumas (10) @ Rivercrest
The reigning champion of Class 3A is taking a look around its new surroundings and is finding out quickly why the conference it strengthened through its presence alone hasn't been so highly-regarded. This is on top of the scrappy effort it needed just to reach the gobbles. Just like the above, this is a game the Colts need to win to cement its place as a 4A power. The sprinting Bobcats could make it a tall order, though.

Arkadelphia (15) @ Stuttgart
It wouldn't have surprised most people if a top seed were knocked out in the first two rounds this year. You would've had a field day trying to find anyone who predicted Warren to be the first out the door, though. Yet, not only did the Badgers do just that, but they took it one step further by making it a mercy rule, the Lumberjacks' first in the postseason in 8 years. They may not score as many points on the defense-minded Ricebirds, but considering their own defensive momentum, they may not need to.

Nashville @ Shiloh (10)
Well, it seems the AAA's ploy to limit the most ambitious football program in the state might have bought the rest of us...only eight years. With its reliance on transfers neutered, the Saints simply focused their energies inward and downward, taking a page from some of the more successful small-school programs and developing players on the same system from grade school up. The fruits from that years-long labor are becoming especially bountiful this year, with every level of play clinching a league title of some form. (Ozark fans would view some of that news with a knowing smirk, but that's another story.) All this leads to Friday night, when a Scrapper side reminding the competition of what it's supposed to stand for go over the river and through the mountains to become the latest team to try and stop Shiloh in its tracks. Nashville should be in a better position than Pea Ridge or Mena to make a challenge, but the hosts have no intention of squandering their best opportunity to reclaim a perch at the top.

Hampton @ Hazen (15)
The Bulldogs deserve credit for how they've fared the past two years; Instead of promptly folding back into the depths after falling short of a title in 2016, they've kept reaching the postseason and winning games. This is probably Hampton's biggest game since said final, but the talent-laden Hornets prove a massive hurdle to overcome.

Mt. Ida @ Conway Christian (10)
I hereby propose that the Lions should henceforth be called the Spartans. Considering the general trajectory of their football program of late, the reference to the Battle of Thermopylae should be obvious. (Considering where the town's namesakes are located, additional nods to antiquity wouldn't hurt.) The Valiant 20 once again leave the comforting ruffles of Montgomery County to prove to the rest of Class 2A that Mt. Ida won't go down without a fight. The Eagle side awaiting them, however, have other ideas.

Osceola @ Smackover (15)
I think it's safe to say that the Noles hit the deep ball by bringing in Robert Hooks two seasons ago. Now comes another trip to Union County, this time to face a Buckaroo side that has firmly left the Foreman fiasco in the rear-view mirror. The guests have yet to lose to anyone outside Mississippi Co. this year, but Smack knows how to beat good teams, with its two closest wins over sides still in the playoffs.

Harrison @ Pulaski Academy (10)
I don't know about you, but I do not find it surprising that the Golden Goblins have made it this far. One remarkable factoid that caught my eye: even after playing 12 games, they have yet to allow 100 points overall this year. Naturally, the Bruins will prove the toughest challenge yet for that accomplished defense.

FS Northside @ Bryant (10)
The once-venerable Grizzlies haven't taken their loss to Cabot lying down, winning three straight and making their deepest playoff run in 13 years. Their reward for gaining all this momentum is one of the most unorthodox rematches in HSFB. Their regular-season match was cut short by lightning and was called despite not reaching halftime (much to BG's dismay), and Northside is using this as motivation to show the Hornets what they lucked out from. Bryant, however, has momentum of its own after deflecting Fayetteville, with plans to carry that surge to an even bigger potential rematch.

Benton @ West Memphis (10)
Is this the best chance for the Blue Devils to break through and hoist a trophy next week? The previous two years, they've had the dubious distinction of getting dropped by the eventual champion, but right now, they're repping the 6A-East with pride, especially considering what their conferece mates (especially one outside LR that needs a title just to get back to .500) have done the last two weeks. For now, though, they look to be in excellent position to reach their first final in 13 years against a Panther side with a few questions on D.
