Title: 2017-2018 Cross Country/Track and Field
Post by: RATTLER43 on July 07, 2017, 11:53:31 am
I haven't done one of these in a couple of years.  Now that one of my kids is married and another is a senior in college I will have a little more time to add to these conversations again.  AT, I am hoping you will continue to be the big contributor like you have for a number of years now.

The dead period is about to end and cross country will be close at hand. Who do you have winning, coming close, dark horses?

Class 1A/2A  Since Ouachita had no seniors in its 9 runners at state and are the defending champions, I'll just pick them to repeat;
Quitman girls with Acorn a close runner-up; Willsey always has them in the hunt but that group of girls at Quitman are just so athletic.
Class 3A      Even though GF loses a lot to graduation, they return their top two and some tradition; I will take them in a close one over Genoa.
I will take HA to knock Genoa off in an upset; Genoa loses two key seniors. Should be a great meet. GF will be in the mix.
Class 4A       I never bet against Heber Springs.
In girls, I will take Heber Springs over Berryville and Huntsville; if Pottsville and Dardanelle could get all their great runners all in they could be in the mix.
Class 5A      Maumelle; Harrison has too many great seniors to replace.
LRC girls look to dominate but Vilonia might have something to say about it.
Class 6A      Lake Hamilton, again; but watch for Greenwood who has been steadily climbing for 5 years.
Siloam Springs in a great battle over LH and Russvegas.
Class 7A      Rogers loses so many great seniors yet I will still pick them in a close one over Fayetteville and Bentonville just because they are Rogers.
I am going to pick Fayetteville in an upset over Bentonville and Rogers in the closest 3-team battle at state.

I have not ever asked the question, but are you a runner yourself rattler or ever were in your life? I am and it's my biggest hobby for sure. I still go 5 or 6 days a week for a run besides odd ball weeks when I have an extra amount on my work plate.

Those random schools like Genoa, Heber, and others that are good at track or cross country always intrigue me. Cross country and track there has to be that culture in that community or a program will never be successful AND a coach who wants to win and recruits the athletes from the other sports. I also think as soccer continues to grow it will create a slight bump in cross country participation. Here in Arkansas with soccer being a spring sport I think some more kids that may not have might start going out for cross country in the fall to get that competition in another way and the obvious of staying in peak shape even in offseason of soccer.

I love running.  Ran with my athletes during practice until knee injury.  Ran with my daughter during her high school years but dealt with pain and swelling.  Need to get my knee repaired and get back to it.

Yes; culture for the sport has to be created.  It is an awesome culture once established.

Awesome... I feel you on the injury. I got the dreaded stress fracture for the first time in April and starting back last week finally. No pain yet so I think I rehabbed it well and slowly. I even got mine transitioning to running only on cement about only 10-15% of the time and the rest on grass and trails which stopped me ever having knee swelling but still got the stress fracture doing speed work is what did it. Is Magazine fairly steady with participation? I know Decatur of all schools has been pretty good in the 2A track ranks lately.

Our participation numbers go up and down but we typically have the most participation of any sport at Magazine.  84 kids signed up last year (junior high and senior high boys and girls).   Holland does a great job at Decatur. State champ girls in 1A this year.  Meeks girl is really good.

We don't have any mandatory summer practices but have practice 5 days a week* and average 25-30 kids a day.  6:30 am starts.

Hate that you got the stress fracture.  Keep going forward.  Running is great.  Ease back in....especially any speed work.

We've had a great run at Magazine.  Boys for 25 years and girls for past 10 or so. It's all about the kids and they have really been wonderful.

https://magazinek12.com/athletics/track-field  shows some of our history.  My Magazine Rattler Track and Magazine Rattler cross country pages show so many stories, videos, and pics.  Part of the culture.

We don't have soccer as a school sport yet but our Hmong population love it.  They have been huge parts of our success.

4A Boys: This could be a very interesting race this year. I'm sure I'm off by a few points here and there depending on which schools have full teams and who will be moving up from junior high teams, but this is how I have the 4A meet scored as of today:

Huntsville: 84
Cave City: 88
Heber Springs: 89

Big fan of relays myself!    One of the things I am most proud of from my coaching career is our success in those relays:
State Champions 4x800m:  1999, 2000, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2014
Medaled in 4x800m: 1997, 1998, 2007*, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 (We got passed by Des Arc last year to push us back to 4th to end our medal streak.)
8:32 at Meet of Champs as our school record.  (Class 2A)
Might not stack up with the Rogers, Bentonvilles, Russellvilles, Lake Hamiltons of the world, but I am no less proud of the kids on those teams.

This may be the event in which we have had the most success over the years. It takes so much hard work and dedication by an entire group to be good at this event.
In 1993 Joe Wilks led Claude Franklin, Joe Standridge, and Sam Duvall to a 9th place finish at state. The following year Joe Standridge, Sam Duvall, Jasper Franklin, and Claude Franklin finished 6th at state. Joe Standridge, Monty Dickens, Sam Duvall, and Jesse Hicks finished 5th in 1995. 1997 saw Lowell McDonald, Albert McDonald, Fred Salzer, and Thomas Hyatt run an 8:57 and take a bronze medal at state. The '98 group raised the bar even more running the third fastest time in Class A history at the time 8:47 to take a silver medal behind the speed of Josh Scott, Albert McDonald, Fred Salzer, and Jeff Emmert. The 1999 group of Josh Scott, David Everett, Robert Reed, and Eddie Blueford finally reached the zenith winning gold at the State Championships helping lead the Rattlers to a 3rd place overall finish. The 2000 group of Robert Reed, Isaac Vaughan, Sam Hartman, and David Everett pulled off the repeat for gold at State. Isaac Vaughan, Robert Reed, David Everett, and Patrick Mott took 4th at State in 2001. Isaac Vaughan, Patrick Mott, Charlie Kelm, and Andrew Cameron took 5th at State in 2002 helping the Ratters to a 3rd place overall finish. In 2003 Charlie Kelm, Patrick Mott, Jason Bonner, and Michael Rogers led the relay to a 4th place State finish helping the Rattlers to a 3rd place overall finish. Jason Bonner, Donald Bonner, Richie Shook, and Charlie Kelm led the 2004 group back to the State gold medal at Heber Springs. The following year Jason Bonner led Doyle Wilks, Larry Williams, and Donald Bonner to a repeat at State in Dardanelle in spectacular fashion! Chris McLeod, Larry Williams, Doyle Wilks, and Zach Lemmond completed the trifecta at Jessieville in 2006 then went to the Meet of Champs and missed the Class 2A record by 5 hundreths of a second running an 8:32! Chris ran a 2:00 while Larry and Doyle each ran under 2:08. The 2007 group of Larry Williams, Doyle Wilks, Zach Lemmond, and Kyle Krigbaum won the event at State for an amazing 4th consecutive year!!!! The 2008 group of Zach Lemmond, Travis Williams, Jericho McElroy, and David Ellis took a silver medal at State.* The 2009 group of Travis Williams, Churxa Yang, David Ellis, and Jericho McElroy took another silver at State. The 2010 group of Travis Williams, Holden Chadwick, Joseph Thao, and Ethan Williams took silver at State as well. The 2011 group of Travis Williams, Ron Stafford, Matthew Dobson, and Churxa Yang took bronze at State. That meant that Travis Williams medaled 4 consecutive years! The 2012 group of Ron Stafford, Matthew Dobson, Sonny Moua, and Michael Vasquez qualified for state. Katy Carter, Logan Lyle, Shelby Gordon, and Beth Forst took a fifth place finish in 2011. Then in 2012 in a remarkable race Katy Carter, Brittney Bryan, Shelby Gordon, and Beth Forst dueled Marmaduke and came away with a school record 10:52 for silver at State. The 2013 group of Shelby Gordon, Beth Forst, Kaitlynn Ryan, and Arielle Loyd took silver at State as well. The 2014 race may be the most exciting ever as sophomore Kaitlynn Ryan ran a personal best to keep Magazine close to #1 ranked Marmaduke (who went into state with a 45 second advantage), then freshman Charity Davis ran a PR to continue to keep Magazine within striking distance, Aubrie Davis, also a freshman, ran a PR as well to keep Magazine in 2nd place; Brittney Bryan took the baton 100 yards out of first and ran a PR (2:27) to overtake the Marmaduke anchor and win gold leading the Rattlers to the State Championship by 1.5 points. All four athletes ran a PR that day. It was reminiscent of the boys' from 2005 gold medal race! The 2015 group of Kaitlynn Ryan, Kia Yang, Charity Davis, and Rebekah Dobson ran their best time of the year to overtake #1 Des Arc and pull off a silver medal at State. Then Ryan helped Lauren Ryan, Rebekah Dobson, and Hannah Smith take bronze at State in 2016. Then Lauren Ryan, Marley Littleton, Kia Yang, and Michal-Ann Dobson placed 4th at state in 2017 while the boys team of Jesse Witt, Levi Wright, Jan Halek, and Wang Minghao placed 7th in the boys. The Rattlers have truly excelled at this event.

This may be the premier event at a track meet. The 400m is one of the most difficult events and in this relay you put together four runners each sprinting a quarter of a mile. On top of that it is the final event of the meet and most runners have run numerous events already. Top that off with sometimes the champion of the meet is determined by this event; when that is the case it can be the sweetest thrill of victory or the painful agony of defeat. Our Magazine Rattlers have experienced both sides.
The first heralded group was Brandon Bryan, Rusty Smith, Randy Bryan, and Billy Wallace back in 1983. They established the first school record with each runner in the mid-50s for the quarter. The group of Josh Scott, Lowell McDonald, Jeff Emmert, and Albert McDonald ran a new district and school record 3:39 to take the gold at State in 1997! Josh Scott, Jeff Emmert, Albert McDonald returned with Jasper Franklin in 1998 to take silver at State. Josh Scott, David Everett, Dustin Kellar, and Edward Blueford took silver at State again in 1999. Isaac Vaughan, David Everett, Sam Hartman, and Roy Carey took a third consecutive State silver in 2000. Roy Carey, David Everett, Isaac Vaughan, and Ramone McDonald kept the medal streak at State alive with a bronze in 2001 making it 5 straight years! The 2002 group of Roy Carey, Jason Bonner, Patrick Mott, and Isaac Vaughan finished the season with the #1 time in the State. The 2003 group finished 6th at state. In 2004 Jason Bonner, Donald Bonner, Richie Shook, and Charlie Kelm led the Rattlers back to the medal stand with a bronze at State. The 2006 group placed 8th at State. The 2009 relay included Chang Yang, Jericho McElroy, David Ellis, and Damien Enix who took silver at State in a new school record of 3:36. Chang Yang, Philip Dobson, Jericho McElroy, and Fue Yang took 4th in 2010. The 2011 group of Charly Moua, Jesse Canada, Toto Yang, and Chang Yang placed seventh at the state championships. The 2012 mile relay team entered the event with a season-best time of 3:46. Junction City had the top time in state with a 3:36. The two teams went in knowing that whoever beat the other would win the State Championship for their school. Jack Scott started with a PR side by side with the JC runner; then Cory Chambers turned in a PR to keep pace with JC; freshman Michael Vasquez PRed as well; Ethan Williams got the baton dead even beside Junction's anchor. He led the Rattlers to a new school and district record 3:35 winning the relay and the State title! Charly Moua and Josh Dority had helped the relay state qualify. During this era the Rattlers also ran Long Yang, Travis Williams, Carl Crawford, and Josh Dority on the relays. They medaled at indoor state beating Nashville with Long, Chang, Travis, and Carl beating out Nashville. Each was sub 54! Brittney Bryan, Katy Carter, Arielle Loyd, Shelby Gordon, Dawn Stockman, and Beth Forst, all ran the relay qualifying the Lady Rattlers for State in 2011, 2012, and 2013 setting the school record of 4:38. The 2014 group of Brittney Bryan, Charity Davis, Aubrie Davis, and Danielle Burr entered the event 1.5 points behind defending State champion relay team from Magnet Cove. Whoever beat the other would win the title. Danielle Burr PRed putting the Rattlers in position; Charity Davis PRed keeping the Rattlers in good shape; Aubrie Davis ran an incredible quarter placing the Rattlers in 5th place just a few yards behind Magnet Cove. Brittney Bryan blew by the MC runner along with two others to gain a silver medal and the State Championship! They set the new record in 4:29. In 2017, Aubrie Davis, Marley Littleton, Taryn Leslie, and Hannah Green ran a 4:41 to place 4th at state.

Your 8:32 time for 2A is no joke .... Every single runner pretty much has to be sub 2:10 and that ain't easy to find four runners at a 2A school all capable of that at the same time.

My 9th grade phenom ran a 2:00.22 to open up, then 2:06.64 (Junior), 2:07.92(Junior), and 2:17.24(Sophomore).  The sophomore got down to 2:06 by senior year.
The phenom moved and never ran track again.  Sad day for me when he moved.  I had him for three years.

Sophomore Hannah Green pole vault 3rd with PR.
Freshman Clair Curtis 4th shot put with PR.
Sophomore Caleb Hyatt 7th shot put with PR.
Freshman Tatum Scott 2:15 800m leg and 56 400m.
Javier Aparisi and Josh Cox, both rookies, ran 5:30s to start season.  I know 5:30s doesn't sound like much but for rookies to the sport, I think we can finish strong by May.  Both are underclassmen.

Pretty solid with underclassmen heavy contributions.... How late did that meet go on last night? I had to get up so early I left about half way through the night And the new conference layouts  is kind of confusing in non football sports.... Do you all go back to district with your football conference plus Eureka or are you with the teams more east in the River Valley and where will your conference meet be?

My coaches at Russellville always stressed to us how much of an honor it was to be on the 4x800 team due to the history we've had on the team. I graduated ladt year and we gelled at the end of the season to finish 4th narrowly missing 3rd place in the 6A State Meet lasf year. Ended up having one of the best races in my life with a 25 MPH head wind for most of the racez

Something went through my mind... I am not sure there is enough posters on the track threads to figure this out but I want to compile as much of a list as possible of schools in Arkansas we know have a track capable of hosting track meets. I'm going to start with the ones that I know....

1-4A
1.Gravette
2.Gentry
3.Pea Ridge(I believe it is just turf painted as a track)

4-3A
1.Paris
2.Mansfield( I really like their track)

2-4A
1.Eureka Springs (always enjoyed meets there)
