Title: NCAA Regional and National Championship Thread (Men and Women)
Post by: AT on May 18, 2016, 11:47:47 pm
This is how college track and field works in the post season:

After the conference meets are finished, all the performances throughout the year in all 21 events are put in descending order lists. If you are in the top 48, you qualify for one of two regionals (West or East regional). The West regional is basically all teams west of the Mississippi River. And the East is all the teams east of the Mississippi River.

So if you are top 48 in your event in your region, you are guaranteed a spot at regional. Just because you have a top 48 performance doesn't mean you have to go to regionals in that event. Perhaps you are an 800 runner who just ran a 400 in the middle of the year for training and you have a top 48 400 team. You can scratch and the 49th best performance will be in the top 48 now and so on.

So 48 athletes go to all 21 events in two different regions. That means, for example, in the high jump there are 48 athletes in the West and 48 athletes in the East competing.

Arkansas is in the West regional. The regional meet is used to qualify athletes for the National Championships. To qualify for the national championship, you must finish top 12 in your region in your event. So 12 from each region will go the nationals, which makes a total of 24 in each of the 21 events.

The only event this is not true for is the decathlon/heptathlon, where the NCAA just takes the top 24 descending decathletes/heptathletes to nationals without making them compete at regionals.

No clue, Rattler. I was hoping he'd score for us in the 10K myself. Maybe Gabe can take care of some of his points.

The women had a good meet. No one missed out really.

The men had a few misses. Strangely in the 800 we qualified Ryan Thomas, who I didn't think had much of a chance to make it, and our stud freshman Carlton Orange didn't make it.

In the 1500, we had 4 guys running and none of them qualified. I thought at least one would.

In the 5K neither of our guys made it.

In the 3K steeple, Cale Wallace ran his worst time of the season and didn't make it, but Tonui did just barely.

In the 10K, obviously Ronoh is a big miss.

Our sprinters did very well and our jumpers did what they needed. I see at best a top 5 finish if the jumpers and sprinters do what they need to. If the sprinters perform way above expectations, we could maybe have a higher finish.

Now the women on the other hand...well I'll just let the projected points do the talking and cross my fingers. They have a very favorable projection though. I don't see them scoring that many points. So they just need people to perform reasonably well.

agree with all.    I still think The Duck women will make some noise.  Our gals need to put them away.  Hogs, Ducks, Gators, and Aggies all have great programs.  Titles can provide that edge in recruiting. WPS!

And today, ladies and gents, the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships start in Eugene, Oregon.

Last year the NCAA decided to change the schedule of the championships. Over a 4 day period, the men would have 2 days to themselves (Wednesday and Friday) and the women would have two days to themselves (Thursday and Saturday). The only time this didn't apply was to the multi events (Decathlon and Heptathlon). This was a success and met with much approval so we have the same format this year. Today is the men's first day. Here is the Razorbacks' schedule for today:

2:30 PM - Brad Culp and Derek Jacobus compete in the 100 meter dash of the Decathlon.

3:10 PM - Brad Culp and Derek Jacobus compete in the Long Jump of the Decathlon.

4:25 PM - Brad Culp and Derek Jacobus compete in the Shot Put of the Decathlon.

5:40 PM - Brad Culp and Derek Jacobus compete in the High Jump of the Decathlon.

6:32 PM - Arkansas's 4 x 100 meter men's relay team competes in the semi-finals.

7:02 PM - Frankline Tonui competes in the 3000 meter steeple chase semi-finals.

7:46 PM - Marqueze Washington, Jarrion Lawson, and Kenzo Cotton compete in the 100 meter dash semi-finals.

8:00 PM - Obi Igbokwe competes in the 400 meter dash semi-finals.

8:00 PM - Jarrion Lawson, Kurt Jenner, and Andreas Trajkovski compete in the Long Jump.

8:14 PM - Ryan Thomas competes in the 800 meter run semi-finals.

8:30 PM - Larry Donald competes in the 400 meter hurdles semi-finals.

8:44 PM - Marqueze Washington, Jarrion Lawson, and Kenzo Cotton compete in the 200 meter dash semi-finals.

8:56 PM - Brad Culp and Derek Jacobus compete in the 400 meter dash of the Decathlon.

9:08 PM - Gabe Gonzalez competes in the 10000 meter run finals.

9:48 PM - Arkansas's 4 x 400 men's relay team competes in the 4 x 400 meter relay semi-finals.

New Projected Men Top Ten

1. LSU - 64
2. Florida - 54.50
3. Oregon - 36.50
4. Arkansas - 36
5. Texas A&M - 33
6. Mississippi State - 25
7. Virginia - 24
8. Tennessee - 23
9. Georgia - 19
10. Virginia Tech - 17
10. Washington - 17

Of note: Arkansas has had a great meet so far. A&M had one of the most disappointing 1st days I've ever seen from a team projected to win. There really have been no disappointments for the Razorbacks. The only disappointment so far has been Andreas Trajkovski sitting in 5th place going into the final 3 long jumps and then getting passed by 4 people and finishing 9th, but he wasn't projected to score in the first place.

We actually, believe it or not, still have a shot at winning this meet even with the projections not being super favorable right now.

How we win this meet:

1. LSU, Oregon, and Florida do not have any major surprises.

2. In the 100 and 200, Jarrion Lawson and Kenzo Cotton score high...hopefully combined for more than 10 points in each.

3. Frankline Tonui needs to score in the 3K steeplechase. Honestly, he wasn't expected to score so if he gets 1 point, he beats expectations, but we probably need him to score something like 4 or 3 points to really help us out.

4. Our 4 x 100 meter relay team needs to finish in the top 3...top 2 preferably, 1st place would be outstanding.

5. Ken LeGassey needs to score in the high jump.

6. Clive Pullen needs to finish top 2 in the triple jump...this one worries me the most. Triple jump is so fickle.

What can we root against?

1. Blake-Mitchell for LSU NOT finishing 1st in the 100 and 200

2. All other LSU sprinters that are in finals (such as the other guy in the 200 and their two 400 runners) not scoring a huge buttload of points.

3. Oregon's 1500 meter runners scoring very little points or none at all.

4. Well it would be nice if Cheserek wouldn't win the 5K, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Perhaps root for the other Oregon 5K runner to not score at all.

5. The Oregon and LSU 110 hurdlers to not be top 2...don't hold your breath too much on that one.

6. Florida's 400 meter hurdlers not scoring a bunch of points together.

7. LSU, Florida dropping a baton in the 4 x 1

8. LSU, Florida having a bad 4 x 4.

Was this a mistake? You have Arkansas with a better time than Florida

No, 12th Man (Fred Bird if you will) it's not.

The way these sprint semi-finals work is you have 3 heats...top 2 from each heat and the next fastest two make 8.

Because of this, you don't always have the 8 fastest qualify.

Florida was 2nd in their heat, so they grabbed an auto qualification spot, even though we ran faster.

For Arkansas to win a national championship:

They need Florida to finish 8th or get DQ'd in the 4x4.

THey can also be co-champs with Florida if Florida is 7th in the 4x4.

It's unlikely. 2nd place is guaranteed.

Do you know what happened with Pullen?   49' is awful for him.

I have no idea with Pullen and it stinks that it happened to him, because we would have won with his regular triple jump.

But if we are to complain about that then of course Texas A&M and LSU could complain about what all went wrong for them.

We would probably be talking about how LSU won this championship if Blake-Mitchell hadn't been injured. (maybe).

Honestly, we had all our guys step up and had some things fall our way. It's just that Florida took advantage of day 2 more than we did.

No complaint here.  I thought we far exceeded expectations!  Jargon was in beast mode.  Kenzo did his thing.  Gabe ran the race of a lifetime....  So many good things!  WPS.
