Gasoline futures up on drop in supplies Associated Press
WASHINGTON - Gasoline futures charged to their highest level in nearly six months on Wednesday after the U.S. government released data showing a large decrease in domestic supplies of unleaded gas.

Last week's decline in commercial gasoline inventories was the fourth in as many weeks, and comes as refiners conduct maintenance on their facilities ahead of the summer driving season, when fuel demand peaks.

Gasoline futures rose 6.97 cents to settle at $1.9542 a gallon on the New York Mercantile Exchange, just six cents shy of the Oct. 4 settlement of $2.0157. Back then, the U.S. fuel market was grappling with the loss of significant refining capacity in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Light sweet crude for May delivery gained 38 cents to close at $66.45 a barrel, the highest close since Feb. 1 and 23 percent above year ago levels.

Heating oil futures rose 2.43 cents to $1.852 a gallon, while natural-gas futures rose 1.9 cent to $7.233 per 1,000 cubic feet.

In its weekly petroleum report, the Energy Department said gasoline inventories fell by 5.4 million barrels last week to 216.2 million barrels, about even with year ago levels. The agency also said that motor gasoline demand averaged 9.1 million barrels a day over the last four weeks, which is 1.3 percent above year-ago levels.

The average retail price of gasoline in the U.S. is $2.50 a gallon, up 34.5 cents from a year ago.

Inventories of distillate fuel, which include heating oil and diesel, slid by 2.5 million barrels to 124.2 million barrels, but that was 15.4 percent higher than last year. U.S. crude inventories rose by 2.1 million barrels to 340.7 million barrels, or 8.2 percent higher than last year.

Barclays Capital said the market would remain particularly sensitive to gasoline inventory levels because of concerns that changes to gasoline specifications could result in further constraints on capacity.

The gasoline additive MTBE, which has been found to contaminate groundwater, is being phased out of gasoline next month by refiners, and many analysts worry that the fledging ethanol industry - to which the U.S. will turn to as an alternative - might not be ready to satisfy the expected summertime jump in demand.

Prices also continue to respond to concerns about supplies from Nigeria and the Middle East.

The outlook on Nigerian oil output remained uncertain. Royal Dutch Shell PLC, the largest foreign oil company operating in the country, has shut in nearly half of its Nigerian production and says it won't resume operations until the country is safe enough for its workers.

Iran, the No. 2 oil producer in OPEC, also remains a potential source of concern. It has been referred to the U.N. Security Council over fears it may want to misuse its nuclear program to make weapons, but the council has been at loggerheads over U.S.-led efforts to ratchet up the pressure on Tehran.

$2.73 in Searcy, makes it hard to enjoy life like we used to!

On CNN last night it said that the gas companies are gouging us like crazy.  It said that the amount of oil in reserves right now is higher than it's been in eight years, yet since 2004 the price of gas has more than doubled. Why aren't the prices going down any time soon when our supply is the highest it's been in almost a decade????

Chief_Osceola™

Because then the execs at the oil companies wouldn't be able to continue to enjoy their record profits.  They realize our 'need' for more and more gasoline, and are taking full advantage of it.  And they will continue to line their pockets until we either lessen our dependance on oil or stricter legislation is passed to regulate the industry.  However, there are problems with both - first, we have conditioned ourselves to think we must rely on gasoline, and second, the oil companies are very wealthy, meaning this wealth is shared with crooked politicians who are receiving under-the-table kickbacks from lobbyists and the rest of the oil companies' ilk.

Everyone is getting hit by the high cost of gas right now for the second time in 2 summers.  How many of us know where our dollars go?  Exxon/Mobil is the largest and their CEO in 13 years has amassed over a Billion Dollars in wealth. But do we really know what is happening?  Below is a list of the major oil companies and who owns them.

Exxon/Mobil – US owned and largest Oil/Gas Company with record profits ever recorded.

Phillips/Conoco – US owned and possibly the second largest oil company.

Unical – US owned.  Was offered by the Chinese to buy it out but congress stepped in to stop it.

Shell and other affiliates – owned by Denmark.

BP/Amoco/Arco – Owned by British Oil.

Murphy – US owned.

Texaco/Chevron – US owned.

Sunoco – US owned.

Total/Fina – Owned by the French.  They got a lot of oil from Saddam with the Oil for Food deal.  They also imported Oil from Libya when we had a boycott of the Libyan stuff in the 80's and 90's.

Citgo/Valero – Owned by Venezuela.  Hugo Chavez runs it as the President of their government.  He is a staunch hater of the US and has vowed to bring us down.  He also says he will sell his countries oil and gas at the rate he sells it in his country – about $.19 a gallon.  I have yet seen a Citgo or any of the other stations selling it there.

I know there is a lot more, but this is a list that I came up with really fast.  First off, I buy zero Oil from Hugo Chavez.  He doesn't need my dollars and I don't need his Socialist ideas and his Saber rattling.  Secondly, I don't buy any French oil.  I don't like how they got it and I don't like them stabbing the US in the back at every chance.  We saved their butt's twice and they have no respect for us so I have no respect for them.  Third, I try to stay away from Exxon/Mobil.  They are the largest company and the ones in the driver's seat.  What they do, others follow.  Of the rest, this is how I spend my dollars:

1.   Phillips/Conoco
2.   Texaco/Chevron
3.   Murphy
4.   Unbranded
5.   Sunoco
6.   The other US brands as I find them
7.   Last the foreign Gas – BP – Shell.

We need the gas, but we control who can have our dollars.  Keep it in the US and let the others know that we are not taking this oil gouging.  I find it ironic that the only countries on the plant paying this much for oil are the western countries.  China can send a ship to the Gulf and take a million barrels and pay $15 for the barrel.  They will haul this oil to China and refine it and sell it at their rate.  If we ask to buy that same oil from China, we have to pay $60-$70 for it.  The same rate we have to pay the OPEC countries.  I have a problem with that and with how we got ourselves here in the first place.

Our Oil and Gas Industry used to be the pride of our country.  It is what kept the Allies alive during WW2.  It propelled the US to economic stability and allowed us to become a modern country.  And now, we despise it.  We tear at it's foundations at every chance.  We blame the whole industry when a single incident happens.  If we would get behind our domestic producers and our independent operators, things will change.  They could change quickly if we demanded our own independent.  We have been a nation of dependency for 50 years now when we could be a nation of resources and stability.  At the rate we were developing in the 40's before the protectionist of our gas and oil passed no export laws, we would have been and very well could have been the largest exporter of oil and gas.

Just a thought.  I don't like what I see and I don't like it when Big Oil does things just because they can.  Oh yeah, don't use the Milk Vs Gas thing.  Do you know how asinine that is?
